Iron Man 3 Co-scribe Drew Pearce Writing Mission: Impossible 5

May 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

drew-pearceMission: Impossible 5 is moving into high gear, with  Tom Cruise recently committing to starring and Jack Ryan helmer Christopher McQuarrie reportedly in talks to direct. Many assumed he would also write the movie, but now THR reports that Iron Man 3 co-writer Drew Pearce is in talks to script M:I 5.

He seems like a good choice, although at the moment there’s no news on the direction he’ll take the plot and what Ethan Hunt will be up to this time around.

Pearce is going to have to work pretty fast though, as Cruise wants to shoot the movie this autumn, giving them a relatively limited time to get the script up to par and all the pre-production sorted – something that can take ages on a movie of this scale.

Mandy Patinkin Joins Zach Braff’s Wish I Was Here

May 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mandy-patinkinAfter his successful (if slightly controversial) Kickstarter campaign, writer-director-star Zach Braff has cast Mandy Patinkin in his indie drama Wish I Was Here. Braff revealed the news himself via Twitter, saying ‘One of my favorite actors of all time joins the cast of “Wish I Was Here”: Mandy Patinkin will play my father’, You can take a look at a pic of them together below.

The film is about 35-year-old Aidan (Zach Braff), an actor who is struggling to provide for his family. When his ailing father (Mandy Patinkin) can no longer afford to pay for his young children’s private school, Aidan reluctantly agrees to home school them, learning a lot about himself in the process.

Zach Braff is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with his brother, Adam J. Braff. The project has met its $2 million Kickstarter goal – indeed it’s now up to $2.6 million in donations, with several days left to donate.

Jake Gyllenhaal & Chris Pine Could Head Into The Woods For A Musical

May 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jake Gyllenhaal

Jake Gyllenhaal

Jake Gyllenhaal and Chris Pine aren’t the first people you’d think of when looking for people who could sing, but it seems they both want to show off their skills, as THR reports they’re in talks for Rob Marshall’s planned movie version of Stephen Sondheim’s musical, Into The Woods.

Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep are already on board, so if Gyllenhaal and Pine sign up, it’s gonna be a pretty starry adaptation.

Into The Woods follows a baker and his wife who try to break a curse placed upon them, which prevents them from having children, by confronting the witch (Streep) who caused their trouble in the first place. Along the way, they encounter fairy tale characters such as Rapunzel, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and many more (Depp will be the big bad wolf).

Pine and Gyllenhaal are up to play the film’s pompous princes, who get a big musical number of their own. The current plan is to shoot Into The Woods this autumn.

Pine’s not only planning to go musical, as TheWrap reports he’s is talks to reunite with Smokin’ Aces director Joe Carnaham on Stretch. Patrick Wilson is already onboard as a limo driver who has the unfortunate responsibility of driving around a mysterious billionaire “who drags him to hell and back.” Pine’s role isn’t mentioned, but there’s a good chance he’ll be the billionaire.

Christoph Waltz Going To The Candy Store With Robert De Niro

May 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

christoph-waltzAfter his Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained double whammy, Christoph Waltz will now have to see if he can win an Oscar for a movie that isn’t directed by Quentin Tarantino. Perhaps The Candy Store will be that film, which he’s just signed up to appear in, according to Variety.

He joins Robert De Niro, Jason Clarke and Omar Sy in the movie, from Academy Award-winning writer and director Stephen Gaghan (Traffic, Syriana).

The Candy Store interweaves several storylines set against the backdrop of the criminal underworld in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. A former covert operative (Jason Clarke) discovers the organisation he was dedicated to fighting is now operating in his new backyard.

When he teams up with a disgraced local cop (Robert De Niro), their investigation leads them to an international sex trade entrepreneur (Omar Sy), a Cold War consigliere posing as a typical American suburbanite (Christoph Waltz), and a beautiful girl wrapped up in an elaborate threat against Manhattan.

Gaghan will direct and produce from a script he co-wrote with Shannon Burke. Shooting kicks off in the next couple of months.

Will Smith Plans Modern Wild Bunch Remake

May 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

will-smithAfter slowing down for a couple of years, Will Smith seems to be back with a vengeance, as in the last couple of months he’s been busy filling his development slate. Now he got a new one, as he is in talks to star in and produce a modern remake of the The Wild Bunch for Warner Bros, according to TheWrap.

Sam Peckinpah directed the original movie, which starred William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, and Edmond O’Brien as a group of aging outlaws who plan one final score on the Texas-Mexico border. The reboot will be set in present day and focus on a crooked DEA agent who puts a team together to go after a Mexican drug lord’s fortune.

Back in January 2011, The Wild Bunch was mentioned as one of several titles Warner Bros. was looking to remake. Tony Scott was attached to direct, before he tragically died. David Ayer had been hired to write the screenplay for that version, but now Warner Bros. is seeking a new writer.

If a deal is finalised, Will Smith will produce alongside Jerry Weintraub, who he previously worked with on the 2010 The Karate Kid remake.

UK Trailer For Behind The Candelabra Concentrates On Matt Damon as Liberace’s Lover

May 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Steven Soderbergh’s Behind The Candelabra will debut on TV in the US (HBO to be precise), in other countries it’s heading for cinemas. In the UK it’ll hit screens on June 7th, and now a trailer for the British release has been released.

Unlike the HBO promos, this one concentrates more of Matt Damon, who plays Scott Thorson in the film, who becomes legendary pianist Liberace’s much younger lover.

Here’s the official UK synopsis: ‘Before Elvis, before Elton John, Madonna and Lady Gaga, there was LIBERACE – infamous pianist, outrageous entertainer and flamboyant star of stage and television. A name synonymous with showmanship and extravagance, he lit up every stage he performed on, as bright as his candelabras and with a unique flair that gained him millions of devoted fans across the globe.

‘In the summer of 1977, handsome young stranger Scott Thorson walked into Liberace’s dressing room and, despite their age difference and seemingly different worlds, the two embarked on a secretive five-year love affair. To the outside world Scott was an employee, at most a friend, but behind closed doors his life with Liberace was an intense rollercoaster of hedonistic fun, flamboyance and excess.

‘Starring Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as Scott Thorson, BEHIND THE CANDELABRA tells the fascinating true story of their glamorous life together and their tempestuous relationship — from the glitz and glamour of the early days in Las Vegas to their very bitter and public break-up.’

Trailer For Sean Hayes’ New Gay Single Dad Sitcom Debuts

May 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Over the weekend, Sean Hayes’ new sitcom, Sean Saves The World, was picked up to air on US TV this autumn. Hayes seems to have spent the last few years trying to escape the shadow of Will & Grace, but now he seems happy to channel his inner Jack, although slight less camp this time around.

Now a trailer and a couple of clips from the sitcom have been released, giving us a look at Hayes as a gay man raising a teenage daughter as a single dad.

To be honest it all looks a little generic, but it could fun. We’ll get to see more later this year.

The Congress Trailer – A fascinating, strange live-action, animation hybrid

May 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

And the award for most nuts looking trailer of the year so far goes too…

The movie is a mix of live-action and animation from Waltz With Bashir director Ari Folman, featuring a great list of actors, including Robin Wright playing herself, along with Kodi Smit-McPhee, Danny Huston, Harvey Keitel and Paul Giamatti.

The film is a loose adaptation of Stanislaw Lem’s The Futurological Congress, a 1971 black humour science fiction detailing the exploits of the hero of a number of his books, Ijon Tichy, as he visits the Eighth World Futurological Congress at the Costa Rica Hilton. However as you can see from the trailer, the film is quite different, with Robin Wright having her career pronounced dead, so she sells her likeness to a company that will use her as a sample – and that’s when things get animated.

The film premieres at Cannes. [Read more…]
