Wonderstruck Trailer – Out director Todd Haynes takes us into a Bowie-backed world

July 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of years after gay director Todd Haynes wowed Cannes with the rapturously received Carol, he returned this year with Wonderstruck. The movie also got good notices, for it’s take on two children, born 50 years apart.

Apparently the music of David Bowie infuses the whole thing, as evidenced by the trailer below. Oakes Fegley, Millicent Simmonds, Julianne Moore and Michelle Williams star.

The movie follows two, ‘children from two different eras who secretly wish their lives were different. Ben longs for the father he has never known, while Rose dreams of a mysterious actress whose life she chronicles in a scrapbook. When Ben discovers a puzzling clue in his home and Rose reads an enticing headline in the newspaper, both children set out on quests to find what they are missing that unfold with mesmerizing symmetry.’

The film is due out later this year. [Read more…]

Ready Player One Trailer – The Iron Giant & BTTF DeLorean appear in Steven Spielberg’s reference-heavy world

July 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ready Player One is one of the more intriguing movies of 2018. Ernest Cline’s novel was packed with references to 80s and 90s culture and films, including much of the work of Steven Spielberg. So when the great bearded one announced he was going to direct a movie version, many were intruigued about how they’d incorporate references to films owned by a wide variety of companies – especially as Spielberg said he would be going easy on references to his own films.

Now we’ve got out first look at the movie, and the references are there, including the Back To The Future DeLorean, and The Iron Giant. The last of those Spielberg says is a major part of the movie. It does look pretty cool though, and more ambitious than anything we’ve seen from SPielberg for a while.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From filmmaker Steven Spielberg comes the science fiction action adventure “Ready Player One,” based on Ernest Cline’s bestseller of the same name.

‘Ready Player One is in cinemas March 30, 2018 and stars Tye Sheridan (“X-Men: Apocalypse,” “Mud”), Olivia Cooke (“Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,” “Bates Motel”), Ben Mendelsohn (“Rogue One – A Star Wars Story,” “Bloodline”) and T.J. Miller (“Deadpool,” “Silicon Valley”), with Simon Pegg (the “Star Trek” movies, the “Mission: Impossible” movies) and Oscar winner Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies,” upcoming “Dunkirk”).

‘The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.’ [Read more…]

Justice League Extended Trailer – Batman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg & Flash unite

July 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Following the critical and commercial success of Wonder Woman, many are hoping that the DC universe has taken a turn for the better, and that it will continue with this autumn’s much-anticipated Justice League. It’s certainly noticeable in this extended trailer, that Wonder Woman is pused to the fore.

Of course, there’s also Batman (Ben Affleck), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), Flash (Ezra Miller) and maybe even Superman (Henry Cavill), despite what happened in Batman vs. Superman.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat.  But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.’

The movie will be in cinemas November 17th.  [Read more…]

Bright Trailer – Will Smith takes fantasy characters into a police procedural world

July 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Bright is one of Netflix’s biggest gambits yet – a big-budget, fantasy thriller, with a major star (Will Smith), and now plans to release it in cinemas. Yep, they’ve bought the release rights to the $90 million movie outright, and will be streaming it worldwide at the end of the year.

A new trailer for the film has been released, which suggest it’ll be a strange but potentially pretty good movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set in an alternate present-day, this action-thriller directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad, End of Watch, writer of Training Day) follows two cops from very different backgrounds. Ward, a human (Will Smith), and Jakoby, an orc (Joel Edgerton), embark on a routine night patrol that will alter the future of their world as they know it. Battling both their own personal differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a deadly, thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which in the wrong hands could destroy everything.

‘The Netflix original film stars Will Smith, Joel Edgerton, Noomi Rapace, Lucy Fry, Edgar Ramirez, Ike Barinholtz, Enrique Murciano, Jay Hernandez, Andrea Navedo, Veronica Ngo, Alex Meraz, Margaret Cho, Brad William Henke, Dawn Olivieri, and Kenneth Choi. The film is directed by David Ayer and written by Max Landis. David Ayer, Eric Newman, and Bryan Unkeless serve as producers.’

Bright will be on Netflix from December 22nd. [Read more…]

New Thor: Ragnarok Trailer – (Including a shirtless Chris Hemsworth) Plus an ace new poster for Black Panther

July 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While the first two Thor films were fun, they were sometimes a bit too serious for their own good. It’s something that became more of an issue in the second movie, where it became more difficult not to realise how silly some of it was, when everyone was taking it so seriously.

However, it seems that for Thor: Ragnarok they’re taking a leaf out of the Guardians Of The Galaxy playbook and introducing a lot more humour. Indeed, there will be a bit of a Guardians crossover, as Jeff Goldblum who was seen as the Grandmaster on Guardian Vol. 2, will also be in the third Thor film. From the evidence of the new trailer, while the additional humour changes Thor, it should work, as it looks a lot of fun.

Alongside a new Thor: Ragnarok trailer and poster, to coincide with Marvel’s Comic Con panel, a Black Panther poster has been released, which it has to be said, is pretty cool.

Here’s the Thor: Ragnarok synopsis: ‘In Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok—the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization—at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger—the Incredible Hulk!

‘Thor: Ragnarok is directed by Taika Waititi and returns Chris Hemsworth starring as Thor and Tom Hiddleston reprising his role as Loki. They are joined by Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson and Karl Urban, with Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Hopkins.’

Thor: Ragnarok will be in UK cinemas on October 27th. Black Panther will be released February 2018. [Read more…]

The Lego Ninjago Movie Comic Con Trailer – The Lego film franchise is going martial arts

July 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Lego Movie turned out to be a much better movie and a much bigger hit than anyone expected. As a result Warner Bros. has been looking to other places they could take animated Lego. We’ve already had the very funny The Lego Batman Movie, and a Lego Scooby Doo release is going straight to DVD.

They’ve also got a big screen Lego Ninjago Movie in the works. To tie in to Comic Con, a new trailer has been released, which suggests this could be an awful lot of fun and just as tongue-in-cheek as earlier Lego animated films.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In this big-screen Ninjago adventure, the battle for Ninjago City calls to action young Lloyd (Dave Franco), aka the Green Ninja, along with his friends, who are all secret warriors and LEGO Master Builders.  Led by kung fu master Wu as wise-cracking as he is wise, they must defeat evil warlord Garmadon (Justin Theroux), the Worst Guy Ever, who also happens to be Lloyd’s dad. Pitting mech against mech and father against son, the epic showdown will test this fierce but undisciplined team of modern-day ninjas who must learn to check their egos and pull together to unleash their true power.’

The film will be in UK cinemas in October. [Read more…]

Star Trek: Discovery Trailer – The franchise is coming back to TV, but it’s looking very different

July 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After several delays which have meant it won’t be released until almost a year after it was originally due, Star Trek: Discovery is on its way, starting on September 25th. To tie in with its ppearance at Comic Con, a trailer has been released, which shows this is not like the TV Star Trek we’ve seen before.

It’s big, it’s expensive, it’s explosive and has a much more intense and dangerous feel than earlier incarnations of the franchise. It’s not too surprising, as those behind the show have often spoken of how thye were breaking the mould, such as having an ongoing plot rather than completely separate instalments, and that it would allow major characters to disagree and dislike each other, which rarely happened in earlier shows.

While some purists are likely to be upset, there are a few nods to them, such as the appearance from classic Original Series character Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson), who will be a recurring character in the show. Largely though, it concentrates on Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Green (who will be the central character), Jason Isaacs as Captain Lorca and Michelle Yeoh as Captain Georgiou.

The show will also feature Star Trek’s first regular gay character, an astro-botanist played by Anthony Rapp. However, he doesn’t feature much in the trailer.

The show will begin streaming on CBS All Access in the US, and Netflix in the rest of the world, starting on Spetember 25th. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Michelle Pfeiffer Will Be Janet Van Dyne In Ant-Man And The Wasp

July 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s starting to feel like there’s been a long gap between Ant-Man and its planned sequel, Ant-Man And The Wasp. However, with a July 2018 release planned, they’re now moving into high gear, filling out the cast. That includes the announcement at Comic Con that Michelle Pfeiffer has signed up to play Janet Van Dyne in the movie.

She joins fellow newbies, Walton Goggins as Ghost, Laurence Fishburne as Dr. Bill Foster and Randall Park as Jimmy Woo.

Janet Van Dyne is the mother of Evengeline Lilly’s Hope Van Dyne, who in the film will become The Wasp. It’s potentially major casting news, as in the comics, Janet was the original Wasp and the first wife of the original Ant-Man Dr. Henry Pym (Michael Douglas). She’s also been a member of The Avengers, and was even their chairman for a time. It therefore means there’s potentially space to move Pfeiffer into other Marvel movies.

Harley Quinn Vs. the Joker Movie Being Planned At Warner Bros

July 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A sequel to Suicide Squad is already in the works, currently planned for release in 2019. However, Screen Rant has revealed that Warner Bros. is also planning to expand that part of the DC film universe with Harley Quinn Vs. the Joker.

The current plan is that both Margot Robbie and Jared Leto will return as the title characters. Robbie is also set for another spin-off, Gotham City Sirens, which features a selection of Gotham’s female villains.

It appears it’s early days on the Harley Quinn vs. the Joker movie at the moment, as there’s very little info available, other than that Geoff Johns will produce the movie. It’s not even known when we might get to see the movie, although Warner/DC has announced a couple of release dates for films it hasn’t officially announced yet, so this may be one of those.
