Zachary Quinto To Make Broadway Debut In Tennessee Williams Revival

April 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Zachary QuintoZachary Quinto is busy travelling the world at the moment promoting Star Trek Into Darkness, but he’s booked a great job for when that finishes – making his Broadway debut in a revival of the Tennessee Williams classic, The Glass Menagerie.

Quinto will play Tom Wingfield, the narrator and protagonist of the play, who works hard to support his mother and sister. His mom, Amanda, is a faded southern belle, obsessed with her youth and in finding a suitable match for her daughter, Laura. However Laura is a quiet and timid woman who prefers looking after her collection of glass animals rather than the company of others. Things come to a head when Tom brings home a friend from work, who Amanda assumes is a potential suitor for her daughter.

The character of Tom is often considered a stand-in for tortured gay playwright Williams.

Quinto previously starred in an off-Broadway production of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America in 2010, but this will be his first proper Broadway production. The play is due to open on September 5th, although the theatre it’ll be staged in has yet to be announced.

TWO: The Story of Roman & Nyro – LGBT-themed documentary trailer

April 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

TWO: The Story Of Roman and Nyro documents the 12-year journey of legendary songwriter Desmond Child (Livin’ On A Prayer, Livin’ La Vida Loca, Just Like Jesse James) and his lifelong partner Curtis Shaw, and the extraordinary way they met and connected with Angela Whittaker, the woman who would carry their twin sons, Roman and Nyro, into the world.

From preconception through the boys’ first 10 years, TWO is the personal and powerful story of these unique individuals whose lives become inextricably woven together in magical and unexpected ways. TWO is testament to the universal power and ultimate triumph of love — that it is love that makes a family, affirming modern families may be modern in their making, but timelessly human at their core.

TWO is premiering at the Nashville Film Festival on April 18th and making its World Premiere today (April 20th) at the Miami LGBT Film Festival. [Read more…]

Behind the Candelabra – Invitation To The Set Behind-The Scenes Video

April 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In less than a month, HBO will debut Steven Soderbergh’s Liberace biopic, Behind The Candelabra, before it gets released in cinemas outside the US (it reaches the UK on June 7th). Now HBO has released a short new promo, giving us a look behind-the-scenes on the movie, which stars Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as his younger lover, Scott Thorson.

The film details their relationship, which saw Liberace publicly saying he was straight, while having his toyboy at home. Things went sour when they broke up and Scott sued the glamorous pianist for alimony.

The promo sees screenwriter Richard Lagavenese talking about the movie and what we can expect from the film.

Steven Soderbergh has also recent been addreesing how true the film is to Out.com, telling them that Scott and Liberace tell “completely different stories” about Scott’s plastic surgery. “So somebody is not telling the truth,” Soderbergh said, who has seen the depositions in their court case. “We went with Scott’s version because I love the image of Lee bringing the painting over and saying, ‘I want him to look like this.'”

This Friday, HBO will air The Making of Behind the Candelabra, giving people a closer look at the production, so take a look if you’re interested.

Playwright & AIDS Activist Larry Kramer To Receive Special Tony Award

April 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

larry-kramerTo some Larry Kramer is best known as a playwright who created the likes of The Normal Heart about the early days of the AIDS crisis, to others he’s the author of the controversial novel Faggots, while to many he’s best know for his AIDS activism, helping set up organisations such as the Gay Men’s Health Crisis and ACT UP.

Now the Tony Awards has decided to honour 77-year-old Karmer, offering him the Isabelle Stevenson Award as part of the 2013 ceremony, which takes place on June 9th. The gong, named after a former president of the American Theater Wing, recognises a theatre practitioner who’s made significant contributions to humanitarian or charitable causes.

Kramer was at the forefront of the AIDS battle in the 1980s – few histories of that time fail to mention him – fighting to ensure the US government approved drugs that could help, in the face of bureaucratic apathy and a President who simply didn’t seem to care. Since then he had taken up other gay rights battles and never shied away from a fight he though was worth taking one.

A restaging of The Normal Heart in 2011 won three Tony Awards, including Best Revival, and is now being made into a movie by Glee creator Ryan Murphy, with the likes of Julia Roberts, Taylor Kitsch, Matt Bomer, Mark Ruffalo and Jim Parsons set to star.

Pacific Rim Wonder Con Trailer – Guillermo Del Toro’s film is looking truly epic

April 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Warner Bros and Guillermo Del Toro cut together a new Pacific Rim trailer for Wonder Con, and the original plan was to only show it there. But after a great response, they’ve decided we should all get a look. That would seem a good idea, as this takes the movie to a whole different level thatwhat we’ve seen before – it’s always looked huge, but this is massive!

There’s also plenty of info, such as a brief history of the fact Kaiju (monsters) are being sent through a portal in the Pacific and deliberately aimed at massive population centres. This results in the Jaeger programme, where massive robots are piloted by two humans to battle the creatures. However while it was initially a success, things have gone wrong.

It’s an impressive trailer, which should massive up the excitement for the film. It’s due July 12th in both the US and UK.

First Snowpiercer Footage Online – A behind-the-scenes look at the Chris Evans film suggests a stylish sci-fi flick

April 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

English speaking people tend to think the whole world ought to be tailored for them, so when a video pops up in one language, with subtitles in another, it’s a good reminder that not everyone out there things English is so amazing. That’s what’s happened with the first look at Snowpiercer, which is largely in Korean, but gives us out first look at the movie.

Snowpiercer marks Korean director Joon-ho Bong (The Host, Mother) making his English-language debut. The film is a dystopian sci-fi set on a ravaged Earth where the few human survivors are on the Snowpiercer, a train that travels around the globe. However a revolution is brewing amongst the passengers inside.

The film has a great cast, although as you can see in the new character posters above and below, they’re not always completely recognisable. However the film follows Curtis (Chris Evans), Mason (Tilda Swinton), Gilliam (John Hurt), Wilford (Ed Harris), Namgoong Minsu (Kang-ho Song), Edgar (Jamie Bell), Tanya (Octavia Spencer), Andrew (Ewen Bremner) and Yona (Ah-sung Ko).

From this footage it certainly looks stylish. The film hits US cinemas in May.

James Ponsoldt Plans Young Hillary Clinton Biopic

April 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hillary-clintonWith many expecting Hillary Clinton to make another bid for the White House in 2018, a biopic of her early days seems like a pretty good idea. South Korean writer Young Il Kim has written one, which was ranked fourth on the 2012 Black List  of the best unproduced screenplays.

Now The Wrap reports that James Ponsoldt, the director behind Smashed and The Spectacular Now, has signed up to direct the movie, which is currently called, Rodham. Set during the time of the Watergate scandal, the story follows Hillary when she is the youngest lawyer chosen for the House Judiciary Committee to Impeach Nixon. She has to choose between a career at the White House and her unresolved feelings for former boyfriend Bill Clinton, who is teaching law in Arkansas at the time of the movie.

The Twilight Saga producers Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey are backing the film, and plan to attach an actress to play Hillary before shopping the project to studios. While many top actresses have expressed interest in the role, the movie is still in the early stages of development and nobody has been cast.

Michael Fassbender To Be Macbeth In New Take On The Bard’s Tale

April 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-fassbender-shame(The likes of Orson Welles, Jon Finch and ever Sam Worthington have previously brought Macbeth to the big screen, but Shakespeare’s classic is still perhaps waiting for its definitive movie version. Now Screen Daily suggests Snowtown director Justin Kurtzel is going to give his take of story, and he’s got Michael Fassbender on board for the lead role.

Todd Louiso and Jacob Koskoff have adapted the Bard’s text, which tells the story of a ruthlessly ambitious Scottish lord who seizes the throne with the help of his scheming wife and three witches. The new film will keep the original 11th century setting, with Shakespeare’s original language, but to attract modern attention-span lacking audiences, will also feature visceral battle scenes.

The film will be look for sales at Cannes, with Kurzel planning to start shooting later this year. Fassbender seems a fantastic choice for the lead, so this will be one to look out for.

Jeremy Irvine in Now Is Good

Jeremy Irvine in Now Is Good

The Woman In Black surprised many when it became the biggest horror-thriller ever at the UK box office and found success around the world too. Unsurprising a sequel was soon announced, with Susan Hill, who wrote the original Woman In Black novel, coming up with an idea for it.

Daniel Radcliffe won’t be back, so a new cast is needed. Now it’s been announced that Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) and Phoebe Fox (Switch) have signed up to star in The Woman in Black: Angel of Death.

The film will continue the story four decades after the first film. Seized by the government during World War II, the sudden arrival of a group of evacuated children at Eel Marsh House awakens its darkest inhabitant. There’s no news on exactly who Irvine and Fox will be, although we assume they’ll be busy getting haunted in the movie (although we reckon Jeremy Irvine is too pretty to haunt – ghosts leave him alone!).

Tom Harper will direct from a screenplay by Jon Croker wrote the screenplay. Harper commented, “Jeremy and Phoebe are fantastic actors to continue The Woman in Black’s chilling tale. I’m looking forward to working with them both on the film and can’t wait to start shooting with the pair.”

Interestingly the announcement refers to Angel Of Death as ‘the next installment’, suggesting they may want to make a few more after this one.
