New Lincoln International Trailer – Take a look at Spielberg’s film in all its glory

November 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

During its US preview screenings, Spielberg’s Lincoln has been getting pretty good reviews, and while we in the UK have to wait until January 25th, 2013 to see it, a new trailer has arrived giving us a look at the film’s scope and intricate production design. Personally we reckon it’ll be worth watching just for Tommy Le Jones’ lovely wig.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Steven Spielberg directs two-time Academy Award® winner Daniel Day-Lewis in “Lincoln,” a revealing drama that focuses on the 16th President’s tumultuous final months in office. In a nation divided by war and the strong winds of change, Lincoln pursues a course of action designed to end the war, unite the country and abolish slavery. With the moral courage and fierce determination to succeed, his choices during this critical moment will change the fate of generations to come.

‘Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Hal Holbrook and Tommy Lee Jones, “Lincoln” is produced by Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, with a screenplay by Tony Kushner, based in part on the book “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln” by Doris Kearns Goodwin. The DreamWorks Pictures/Twentieth Century Fox film, in association with Participant Media, releases in UK cinemas on January 25th, 2013.’

First World War Z Footage Arrives – The Brad Pitt film promises a massive zombie apocalyse

November 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

World War Z always sounded like a cool movie – Brad Pitt taking on a zombie apocalypse, with a huge budget for special effects – but it’s been a rather troubled production. The studio demanded extensive reshoots, including rewriting and completely overhauling the final thirs of the film. Hopefully they’ve sorted the issues out and the final film will work well. Now we get our first chance to take a look at the film, with some brief footage from ET, showing what appears to be a really big movie. It also promises we should get more on Thursday. It’s due out June 21st 2013.

Peter Mullan & Jane Horrocks Have Sunshine On Leith For Director Dexter Fletcher

November 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dexter Fletcher surprised many with how good his first film as a director, Wild Bill, was. It certainly ensured that many have been keen to hear what he’d do next, and now Variety has brought us that info, as he’s set to helm Sunshine On Leith, and it appears it’ll be a musical.

In fact plans are so far advanced that he’s already started shooting, with Peter Mullan and Jane Horrocks set to star. There’s not too much info on the plot, although Proclaimers fans may now it’s the name of their 1988 album that included the hit ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)’. That’s not a coincidence, as Stephen Greenhorn is adpating the film from his own musical, which has the music of the Scottish brothers threaded through it.

George McKay, Kevin Guthrie, Antonia Thomas and Freya Mavor will also star, with filming taking place over the next six weeks.

First Pics Of Channing Tatum In White House Down Arrive

November 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The battle of the rival movies about the White House being taken over by terrorisst has started, with the first images from White House Down arriving via EW (and scanned by the fine folks at HeyUGuys).

Roland Emmerich directs the film, which is about a young Secret Service agent (Channing Tatum) who gets put to the ultimate test when a paramilitary group invades the White House and takes everyone hostage. Jamie Foxx, James Woods and Maggie Gyllenhaal also star.

The film will be going up against Olympus Has Fallen, which has a broadly similar plot, but has Antoine Fuqua directing, with Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman starring. That movie is trying to get a jump on White House Down, with a spring release, while Emmerich’s movie hits US cinemas in June and is currently scheduled to hit the UK in September.

Max Landis To Direct Me Him Her, About Someone Struggling With Their Sexuality

November 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Thanks to Chronicle, Max Landis is one of the most in-demand screenwriters in Hollywood, having taken on a range of projects from a space movie at Disney to Woogles and a sequel to Chronicle. However now he’s broadening his horizons and following in his father John’s directing footsteps, as Variety reports he’s set to helm Me Him Her, based on his own screenplay.

The project is an indie comedy that Big Beach Films has agreed to fund. There’s precious little info on the plot, other than Landis describing it as ‘Reality Bites on acid.’ That doesn’t really tell us much, but it will apparently explore three young people going through a quarter-life crisis in Los Angeles, looking at love, sex and friendship as one of the trio struggles with their sexuality.

The plan is to shoot next year, although it’s not entirely certain when at the moment. Presumably Landis is waiting to find a gap in amongst all the other projects he’s got going on, which also include a couple of TV pilots.

Is A Casablanca Sequel In The Works, Based On An Idea From The Original Screenwriter?

November 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While little is sacred in Hollywood, you’d have thought that one of the few might be Casablanca, but it appears not, as the New York Post reports that Warner Bros. is considering making a sequel to Casablanca, based on a treatment written more than 30 years ago by screenwriter Howard Koch.

One thing that might give us some reason to hope this won’t be a complete travesty is that Howard Koch wrote the screenplay for the original Casablanca, so at least this started from a good source. Now Howard’s son, Peter Koch, has taken up this treatment, which is about the child of Rick and Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), set 20 years after the original film – so I suppose technically this would be a spin-off, which might avert the ire of film purists.

The producer commented, “After leaving Casablanca for America, Ilsa learned she was pregnant. She gave birth to a boy who grew up in America. The real father of the boy, it turns out, was not Laszlo but Rick. He was conceived the night Ilsa came to Rick’s place to plead for the Letters of Transit [so that settles the did they or didn’t they make love ponderings]. The secret was not kept from Laszlo, but being the kind of man he was and owing so much to Rick, he adopted the child and treated him as his own son. The boy was named Richard, and he grew up to be a handsome, tough-tender young man reminiscent of his father. He had been told the truth about his origin and has a deep desire to find his real father, or at least more about him, since Rick’s heroic at actions in Casablanca have become legendary.”

The movie follows Richard’s journey to Casablanca after his mother and Laszlo pass away. Cass Warner, the granddaughter of Warner Bros. founder Jack L. Warner, will produce. She indicated the studio passed on the project a year and a half ago, but they also expressed interest in revisiting it if she could find a filmmaker the studio wants to work with.

Warner Bros. had originally planned to make a sequel entitled Brazzaville shortly after Casablanca’s release, where it was revealed that Rick (Humphrey Bogart) and Captain Renault (Claude Rains) were actually secret Allied agents. The project never moved forward (thankfully).

Nicolas Cage Confirmed For Expendables 3, With Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes, and Mickey Rourke in Talks

November 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago news emerged that The Expendables 3 was already in the works and producers were trying to line up the likes of Nicolas Cage, Wesley Snipes and Harrison Ford for the movie. Now Sylvester Stalloned has shared his thoughts on his own personal Facebook page, and has confirmed Nicolas Cage will be taking a major role in the next adventure.

He’s also confirmed that the inclusion of Harrison Ford wasn’t a pipe dream, as he, Wesley Snipes and Mickey Rourke may all be up for the movie. There is no mention of Steven Seagal, who’s also been rumoured for the film, and the previously mentioned Clint Eastwood seems to be out of the running as well.

Here’s what Sylvester Stallone had to say, “The Expendables 3: We are preparing the film with the same passion and commitment as the previous two. We have confirmed Nicolas Cage, a master actor who gives a veneer intellectual group. Hopefully we can realize to Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes and Mickey Rourke. That is the great mission of the producer. We will continue with the same narrative scheme, the agility and the frenzy, which are inherent to the saga. What will definitely be the last? I cannot guarantee. In principle it would be two deliveries, but the affection of the people encouraged us to work on a third. I guess as long as we amused ourselves by offering fun and people, we can continue playing The Expendables. For now we are not as expendable as it should and as some critics want. Sly Stallone”

John Woo is currently being eyed to direct this latest installment, with Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham already confirmed to return.

Harrison Ford ‘Open’ To Star Wars VII, And Matthew Vaughn May Direct

November 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

From the moment it was announced a new Star Wars film was coming in 2015, it was clear we were going to be hit with vast amounts of speculation, some more informed that others. Today we’ve got two nuggets, one suggesting Harrison Ford may be up for returning to the franchise and the other saying Matthew Vaughn might direct.

We already knew Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher had been tipped off early about the possibility of more Star Wars. Now EW suggests that not only may Hamill and Fisher be back for further adventures in a galaxy far, far way, but Harrison Ford may return too. EW has what they describe as a ‘highly-placed source’ who says, “Harrison is open to the idea of doing the movie and he’s upbeat about it, all three of them are.”

That’s a long way from saying he’ll actually return – and even if he did it could just be a cameo – but it certainly sounds hopeful. As always with Ford though, he won’t enter negotiations until there is a screenplay and a director in place.

Other rumours, this time via Collider, suggest the director part of that equation may already have been decided, as they say Kick-Ass helmer Matthew Vaughn is in talks to direct Star Wars – Episode VII. It’s difficult to know how firm their sources are, although it would explain why Vaughn dropped out of X-Men: Days Of Future Past just a few months before it was due to shoot.

Many had thought there was something a bit unusual about Vaughn’s departure, as the director had seemed so upbeat about the film. It’s also true that if a director drops out late, it’s usually acrimonious and they have nothing to do with the movie afterwards, but they didn’t seem unhappy with Vaughn in the X-Men camp, as he will still produce the movie.

Both Vaughn and Ford and far from certain yet – nothing will be confirmed until it’s officially announced by Disney – but it’s all certainly intriguing.

Imogen Poots Asks Are We Officially Dating? Opposite Zac Efron

November 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

British actress Imogen Poots got her first big break with 28 Weeks Later, and while she’s popped up in various films since, it’s only in the last few weeks she’s really become flavour of the month in Hollywood. A few days ago she entered talks to play the female lead in Need for Speed, and now Deadline reports that she’s also signed up to star opposite Zac Efron in Are We Officially Dating?

The film is about three male best friends who make a pact to remain single. The plot thickens when each of them meets their perfect partner. Zac Efron and Miles Teller are set to play two of the friends, while Deborah Ann Woll will portray the ex-wife of one of the trio. No details were given for Imogen Poots’ character, but presumably she’ll be the romantic interest for one of them.

Tom Gormican (Movie 43) is set to direct the movie from his own original script, which was featured on the 2010 Black List of the best unproduced screenplays. Shooting will start later this month.

First Star Studded Image From Last Vegas Arrives

November 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last Vegas has been described as the ‘old guys Hangover’, and now we get our first look at the movie, with Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline in their best Rat Pack style togs, standing by the Sin City sign.

The film is due for release on December 20th, 2013, so we’re getting this pic nice and early, just as it starts shooting in Nevada, before it moves on to Atlanta, Georgia. Directed by Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure, While You Were Sleeping) from a screenplay by Dan Fogelman (Crazy Stupid Love, Tangled), TangledS co-stars Oscar-winner Mary Steenburgen (The Help), Jerry Ferrara (Think Like a Man), Romany Malco (Weeds) and Roger Bart (Political Animals).

The ensemble comedy follows four old friends who decide to throw a Las Vegas bachelor party for the only one of them who has remained single.
