Eli Roth Reveals Green Inferno Cast, With Shooting Starting Nov. 5th

October 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Eli Roth hasn’t directed a movie since 2007’s Hostel: Part II (he’s produced quite a few films though), but now it’s been announced that principal photography is set to begin November 5th in Peru on his new movie, The Green Inferno.

The horror thriller’s cast has also been announced, which includes Lorenza Izzo (Aftershock), Ariel Levy (Aftershock), Aaron Burns, Daryl Sabara (John Carter, Machete), Kirby Bliss Blanton (Project X), Magda Apanowicz and actress/singer Sky Ferreria. Roth is directing based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Aftershock co-writer, Guillermo Amoedo.

Filming will take place over the next few weeks in Peru before moving to Santiago, Chile. The movie follows a naive group of student activists who head from New York to stage a protest in the jungles of Peru, trying to tackles the evils of deforestation. Sadly for them, they don’t encounter pissed off loggers as much as they fall foul of cannibals (which sounds oddly like the episode of South Park where Kenny and co. go to the rainforest).

Help Screwball Gay Comedy Such Good People, Starring Michael Urie & Randy Harrison, Get Made

October 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Whether crowd-funding movies will work in the long run still isn’t clear, but at the moment it’s a great way for films that would find difficulty getting cash through traditional sources to get made. One such film currently looking for backers is the gay-themed Such Good People, and unlike many others, it already has a cast attached of fairly well-known names attached, representing the good and the gay of US entertainment.

Michael Urie (Ugly Betty, Partners), Randy Harrison (Queer As Folk USA), Lance Bass (N*Sync), Bree Turner (Grimm, The Ugly Truth), Jon Polito (American Gangster, Gangster Squad), Alec Mapa (Marley & Me), Drew Droege (Eating Out: Drama Camp), Mitch Silpa (Bridesmaids, Along Came Polly) and Broadway legend Sandra Bernhard are all set to star. The film is about ‘A young, gay couple discover a secret room filled with cash while house-sitting for wealthy friends… who die while out of the country.’

The makers are looking for $50,000, which is the bare bones of what’s needed to cover production costs, although the more cash they get, the more they’ll have to spend on locations and more time to shoot the film. Stewart Wade (Tru Loved, Coffee Date) is set to direct from a script by David Michael Barrett.

The makers says, ‘Our risks and challenges will be enormous. Even though that is true of every film production, at every budget, the smaller the budget the greater the challenges… We have something else, too: We have passion! And we believe that passion plus experience will equal a great little movie that will, with your help, come together to truly be something special.’

If you’d like to know more or give some cash, head over to Kickstarter.

Gay-Themed Hit Swedish TV Series Never Wipe Tears Without Gloves Set To Become A Movie

October 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It sounds like Never Wipe Tears Without Gloves (Torka aldrig tårar utan handskar) is Swedish TV’s answer to Queer As Folk – a gay-themed show that not only found success with the critics but also with audiences too. Now the ratings hit may be heading to the silver screen, as Swedish channel SVT has a draft of a movie version, and they’re currently looking for international distributors and co-producers.

Variety reports on the move, but it’s not 100% clear if the planned film will be completely new or if it will be a re-edited version of the original three-part mini-series (which is what was done with the Scandinavian Dragon Tattoo films, which were originally two-part TV adaptations, re-edited into movies for international release). The latter seems likely as STV’s Maria Nordenberg commented, “It could be a tough sell in Sweden, since so many have already seen the series, but our principal focus will be the international market, film festivals and channels focused on TV movies.”

The three hour-long episodes of Never Wipe Tears Without Gloves were a ratings smash, getting 1.2 million viewers each, which means that one in eight Swedes saw the show. Directed by Simon Kaijser, the series has been compared to Tony Kushner’s Angels In America, and follows the true story of a group of young gay men in Stockholm in the early 1980s. The series stars up and coming young actors Adam Palsson and Adam Lundgren, alongside more established actors Marie Richardson, Stefan Sauk and Simon J. Berger.

The show’s writer, Jonas Gardell, has already released a novel in Scandinavia based on the same story. And if you’re hoping to see the original mini-series, it may well come to the UK, as the BBC has shown interest in acquiring it.

The Evil Dead Red Band Teaser – First look at the Raimi produced remake

October 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although a lot of people’s knee-jerk reaction to the idea of remaking The Evil Dead has been less than positive, that fact Sam Raimi’s been involved has given many pause to wonder whether it might end up okay. Now the first teaser has arrived, which largely seems designed to show that the elements from the original people loved will still be present, and there’ll still be plenty of blood, guts and gore. It certainly looks a lot shinier than Raimi’s original, but there’s plenty of promise here. Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.’ It’ll hit cinemas next April.

Director Jonathan Demme Eyes Post-Coma Drama Old Fires

October 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although it didn’t do big box office in either the UK or US, it seems Hollywood has taken note of the fact that in the rest of the world the French film Untouchable has taken an enormous $400 million at the box office, and as a result there’s been a definite upswing in interest in making movies about disability.

Hilary Swank is busy putting together a movie in which she’ll be dealing with ALS (Motor Neurone Disease) and now Variety reports Jonathan Demme (The Silence Of The Lambs) is planning to make a movie about a world-renowned architect who’s just woken up after a lengthy coma.

Heather MacGowan’s script follows the man through his rehabiliation – both mental and physical. With the help of his sarcastic therapist, he tries to repair his damaged relationship with his children, and win back the love of his wife.

It’s not clear when Demme might shoot the movie, as he’s also developing a movie based on Stephen King’s 11/22/64 and an animated movie based on David Egger’s Zeitoun.

Bradley Cooper May Join Emma Stone In Cameron Crowe’s Next

October 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While we may not have a title yet, Cameron Crowe is busy putting together his next movie, and already has Emma Stone lined up to star. Now Deadline reports he may be adding Bradley Cooper to the mix, as The Hangover actor has entered talks to join the movie.

Not too much is known about the movie, other than it’s been described as a romantic two-hander, with a tone similar to Almost Famous and Jerry Maguire. Other than that, no details have been revealed about the plot.

Many expect Cooper to get a breakthrough into being taken seriously as an actor with David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook, where he plays a man recently released from a mental institution, where he was placed after a severely violent outburst. He moves back in with his parents and plots how to win back his wife, an idea that everyone but him thinks is delusional. Hopefully the Cameron Crowe film will be a continuation of his good run.

Ewan McGregor & Evan Rachel Wood May Join Prisoner Of Tehran

October 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

While we in the West have vague notions that Iran isn’t exactly the greatest place in the world, it’s fairly rare that we get stories emerging about life in the country. Now Kari Skogland (Fifty Dead Men Walking) is hoping to help remedy that, with a movie based on Marina Nemat’s memoir, Prisoner of Tehran: One Woman’s Story of Survival Inside an Iranian Prison.

In the hope of ensuring some international interest in the tale, the producers are lining up some well known names, with Moviehole reporting that Ewan McGregor and Evan Rachel Wood are in talks for the movie. Neither will be pretending to be middle-eastern, as they’re expected to take supporting roles,

Nemat was a young girl when the Islamic Revolution changed the face of Iran in 1979. During her teenage years she became increasingly interested in the Koran and politics. At her school, Nemat decided to speak out what she though was wrong, and ultimately caused a student walk out.

Her rebellion was taken very seriously by Iranian officials. She was arrested and thrown in the infamous Tehran prison called Evin. Here she was tortured and sentenced to death for her perceived crimes against the state. An unlikely chance at salvation came at the hands of a guard named Ali, who had fallen in love with her.

S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Series Gets Actress Ming-Na

October 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Things are gearing up on the planned S.H.I.E.L.D TV series. A couple of weeks ago we learned that Clark Gregg would return to the Marvel Universe for at least the pilot episode, playing Agent Coulson. Now he’s got some company, as Deadline reports that Ming-Na has signed on to star as Agent Melinda May in the superhero series.

In character breakdowns that were revealed last month, May was known as Agent Althea Rice a.k.a. The Calvary, although it’s not clear why the name has been changed. She is as a pilot, weapons expert, and soldier who often goes far above and beyond the call of duty. She is soft-spoken and slightly damaged from her experiences in combat.

Ming-Na is best known for starring in ER and Stargate Universe, and had an important arc in Eureka. She also voiced the character of Mulan in Disney’s film.

Joss Whedon is writing the pilot script for S.H.I.E.L.D. with Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. He will likely direct the first episode, if his schedule permits.

Rhys Ifans Up For Madame Bovary, Opposite Mia Wasikowska

October 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rhys Ifans is one of those actors you can put in virtually any type of movie and he seems perfectly at home. While he spent this summer turning into a lizard in The Amazing Spider-man, now he’s planning to don some period garb, as he has joined the cast of Madame Bovary for director Sophie Barthes (Cold Souls).

Mia Wasikowska is set to play the title character in this adaptation of Gustave Flaubert’s classic novel, which is about a married woman who tries to enhance her social status by having a number of extramarital affairs. Rhys Ifans will play Monsieur Lheureuse, a shifty merchant who convinces Bovary to buy goods on credit, which leads to her financial downfall. Paul Giamatti and Ezra Miller also star.

Sophie Barthes will direct from a screenplay by Rose Barreneche. The movie is expected to be faithful to the book, while emphasising more youthful and contemporary themes. Filming is expected to begin next spring in Europe. (Source: Variety)

Mass Effect Movie Gets A New Writer

October 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Legendary Pictures, the company behind the likes of the Dark Knight movies and Watchmen, has been busy working on a screen version of the popular Mass Effect game. Now Variety reports that they’ve hired screenwriter Morgan Davis Foehl to write the script, taking over from Mark Protosevich (Thor, I Am Legend), who wrote the first draft.

The video game is set in the year 2183, and follows a space commander who leads an elite team on a mission to destroy a deadly alien race. The mechanised aliens wipe out everything in the galaxy once every 50,000 years. The movie isn’t expected to follow the video game’s exact story, but will be set in that universe.

The latest installment of the video game series, Mass Effect 3, sold over 1.5 million copies in its first week of release back in March, earning more than $200 million since its debut. While videogame to movie adaptations don’t have a great reputation, Legendary is keen to get this one right.

Morgan Davis Foehl previously served as an assistant editor on the FX series Rescue Me and on the Adam Sandler comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. His screenplay Whatever Gets You Through The Night landed on the Black List in 2009.
