Anne Hathaway In Talks To Join Chris Hemsworth In Robopocalypse

September 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Now Lincoln is nearing release, Spiellberg is starting to gear up development on his next movie, Robopocalypse. A few weeks ago it was revealed he hoped to sign Chris Hemsworth for the movie, now it appears the Aussie actor in definitely onboard, and THR says Anne Hathaway is in talks to play the female lead in the film.

There’s also a Dreamworks press release about the movie, which is mainly about Tom Rothman signing on as a producer. Rothman is the longtime head of 20th Century Fox film (he’s been with the company for 18 years), who resigned from his position a few days ago. Now he’s turning producer, with Robopocalypse one of his first project.

The current plan is for the movie to begin principal photography in early 2013, with a release date alreadys et of April 25th, 2014 day and date worldwide. Exploring the fate of the human race following a robot uprising, Robopocalypse has been adapted for the screen by Drew Goddard (Cloverfield), based on the novel of the same name by Daniel H. Wilson.

Spielberg commented on Rothman coming onbaord, “When someone like Tom is a free agent, you snatch him up fast. He has proven himself to be a necessity of this industry. At Fox he had already been an enthusiastic partner on ‘Robopocalypse,’ and it is to our advantage that he would come produce this film with me. Tom has been a wonderful friend and colleague over the years and DreamWorks is incredibly lucky to have him on board.”

Director Len Wiseman Takes On The Mummy Reboot

September 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For a few months now, Universal has been actively attempting to start their Mummy franchise all over again with a new take on the classic tale. Now they’ve enlisted Len Wiseman to direct the film, according to Deadline.

Prometheus writer Jon Spaihts signed on to provide the screenplay back in April, with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman producing through their K/O Paper Products company , along with Sean Daniel and James Jacks. Here’s what Len Wiseman had to say about the project, suggesting a scarier take on the classic monster, “When I first heard Universal was relaunching this, that is the image that popped into my head, the period tale, the old monster, but when Bob and Alex pitched it, there was a great new take and approach, and a very different mummy as well. It’s a darker twist on the material, a scarier version.”

Len Wiseman previously worked with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman when he directed the pilot episode of their CBS series Hawaii Five-0. The director recently released Total Recall, but had more success with Underworld and Die Hard 4.0.

Tom Hardy May Scale Everest For Doug Liman

September 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Dark Knight Rises’ star Tom Hardy is in early talks to star in Everest for Sony Pictures and director Doug Liman, according to Deadline. If a deal is finalised, the actor will portray legendary explorer George Mallory.

The story is an adaptation of Jeffrey Archer’s non-fiction book Paths of Glory, which is all about explorer George Mallory’s attempt to get into the record books as the first man to reach the top of Mount Everest. The movie is all about Mallory’s obsession with the mountain, as well as his rivalry with fellow climber George Finch.

Mallory and his climbing partner Sandy Irvine failed in two attempts to scale the mountain in 1921 and 1922. They were spotted near the summit on their third attempt in 1924 but nobody knows if they actually made it to the top, as they died on the mountain. Their remains were discovered in 1999 by Mark Anker.

Sheldon Turner is handling the screenplay. Shooting will begin after Doug Liman wraps on All You Need Is Kill, starring Tom Cruise.

Gina Carano Joins ‘Female Expendables’ Project

September 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Haywire star Gina Carano is attached to an all-female version of The Expendables (well, it’s not an official spin-off, but it does want to bring together a bunch of women for some all-action fun). The movie doesn’t currently have a title though.

Adi Shankar is set to produce and finance the moie through his 1984 Private Defense Contractors company. Here’s what he had to say about bringing the actress on board, “I don’t know how I’m supposed to make a movie that is supposed to be the female version of The Expendables without Gina Carano in it. It would be like making Twix without caramel or Jamba Juice without jamba.”

Little is known about the story, except that it will feature an all-female cast and is inspired by The Expendables franchise. No production schedule was released at this time.

New Poster For Les Miserables Arrives – A fresh take on the classic image of Cosette

September 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ever since the musical version of Les Miserables was first staged, it’s been promoted with an image of the young character Cosette, based on Emile Bayard’s original 19th Century illustration for Victor Hugo’s novel (you can see that below).

Now that the film version of the musical is on its way this Christmas, a new poster has been released which keeps the image of Cosette’s face, but updates it with the actress who plays the child (Isabelle) version of the character, before she grows up into the form of Amanda Seyfried.

It’s a clever way to merge the old and new, and assure fans of the stage version that not everything is being changed for the film.

Here’s the official synopsis: ‘Les Misérables is the motion-picture adaptation of the beloved global stage sensation seen by more than 60 million people in 42 countries and in 21 languages around the globe and still breaking box-office records everywhere in its 27th year. Helmed by The King’s Speech’s Academy Award®-winning director, Tom Hooper, the Working Title/Cameron Mackintosh production stars Hugh Jackman, Oscar® winner Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit, Samantha Barks, with Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen.

‘Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption—a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

‘In December 2012, the world’s longest-running musical brings its power to the big screen in Tom Hooper’s sweeping and spectacular interpretation of Victor Hugo’s epic tale. With international superstars and beloved songs—including “I Dreamed a Dream,” “Bring Him Home,” “One Day More” and “On My Own”—Les Misérables, the show of shows, is now reborn as the cinematic musical experience of a lifetime.’

Hugh Jackman Looks Incredibly Buff In First Official Pic From The Wolverine

September 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It took a lot longer for Fox to get The Wolverine into production than originally planned. But it’s now in front of the camera with James Mangold directing. Now the first official image from the film has been released, via the film’s Twitter account, which you can see above.

Hugh Jackman certainly look impressively ripped for the movie, which takes Wolverine to Japan, and has been described as a standalone tale that doesn’t particularly tie into the previous films. The Wolverine is due ouy July 26th, 2013.

Jobriath A.D. Trailer – A gay rock ‘n’ roll star before his time

September 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I have to admit I’d never heard of Jobriath, but perhaps that’s not that surprising. He was a flash in the pan before my birth, but as the new documentary Jobriath A.D. attempts to show, he was a very important and groundbreaking flash in terms of LGBT history.

Jobriath, born Bruce Wayne Campbell, was the first openly gay artist ever signed to a major record label, which almost amazingly happened back in 1972, when David Geffen (who is himself gay) signed him for the then astronomical $500,000. While he was given huge publicity and his debut album garnered generally positive reviews, the public wasn’t ready for a flamboyant star who actually admitted he was gay. The disc bombed amidst a hard backlash.

As many have commented, he was not the first camp, flamboyant, glam, seemingly ‘gay’ artist – it was, after all, a time when Bowie and Queen rode high in the charts – but actually saying the word publicly made a big difference at the time. Not long afterwards Jobriath’s music career was over, although he left a lasting legacy for acts that came after him, such as Soft Cell, Morrissey and Culture Club.

Tragically he became one of first celebrities to die of AIDS in 1983. Take a look at the trailer for what seems like it’ll be a fascinating documentary above, and find out more at the film’s website.

The Philippines Picks Gay-Themed Movie Bwakaw As Its Oscar Choice

September 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While many Asian nations have a patchy record on gay rights, there have been great strides in recent years in The Philippines. Although gay people still face persecution in that nation, things have certainly been moving in the right direction, to the point where the gay-themed film Bwakaw has been picked as The Philippines official entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar.

It’s particularly good news, as historically there’s been a pattern of countries ignoring LGBT themed movie as their nomination, in favour of potentially less forward-thinking movie. In case you were wondering, the Best Foreign Language Oscar isn’t culled from all non-English movies released that year. Instead a committee in each nation is allowed to put forward a single movie that will be considered for the award.

Bwakaw stars popular Filipino actor Eddie Garcia as Rene, an ill-tempered, lonely 75-year-old gay man with a sensitive side, who only came out when he was 60. He spends much of his solitary existence talking to his dog, Bwakaw, and then decides to visit a former female flame at a nursing home, as well as hanging out with a gay couple who run a hair salon.

Filmmaker Jun Robles Lana, 40, spoke to the Wall Street Journal, telling them the film had the odds stacked against it, as ‘Gay stories don’t sell in the Philippines. And it’s a movie about growing old.’ Despite that, it’s found success on the festival circuit and healthy box office in its home country, partly because it uses humour to ‘break the silences’, says Lana, as he ‘didn’t want the film to be bleak’.

It’s still got a long way to go until it wins the Oscar, but it’s great that Bwakaw is in the race.

End Of Watch & House At The End Of The Street Tie At Top Of US Box office

September 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Normally by Monday morning, we know which movie has topped the chart over the weekend, but not so today, as there are three movies which could end up on top when final figures are released later on. Based on estimates, both End Of Watch and House At The End Of The Street took $13 million, while Trouble With The Curve was close behind with $12.7. There’s a chance any of those movie could end up at number one when final figures are tallied.

None of them can be described as a breakout hit, although End Of Watch and Trouble With The Curve certainly won’t be disappointed, as many had wondered whether they’d struggle more than they have.

Dredd however came to earth with a thud, taking $6 million to place sixth on the chart. While the film has had good reviews, it doesn’t seem to have struck a chord with American audiences, which is a shame.

The Master also made its first appearance in the top 10, after breaking records in extremely limited release last week. The film took $5 million as it expanded from five to 788 screens. With ecstatic reviews, it should continue to play well over the next few weeks.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 (based on estimates) for the weekend of September 21st-23rd.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 End Of Watch $13.0 $13.0
2 House At The End Of The Street $13.0 $13.0
3 Trouble With The Curve $12.7 $12.7
