Director Francis Lawrence Offered Hunger Games Sequel

April 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Once Gary Ross officially confirmed that he wouldn’t direct Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, there’s been a lot of speculation over who would replace him. Lionsgate has been scrambling to find a replacement so that the movie can keep with its plan to shoot this autumn (something that’s vital as Catching Fire needs to wrap by December so Jennifer Lawrence can move on to X-Men: First Class 2).

Now Variety reports that I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence has been chosen by Lionsgate to helm Catching Fire, with a formal offer expected to be issued imminently. Bennett Miller (Moneyball) was the other front runner, and both directors met with the studio yesterday before Lionsgate made their final choice. Other directors being considered included Tomas Alfredson, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Cary Fukunaga, and Duncan Jones.

Hunger Games stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth are all returning for the sequel, which already has a release date set of November 22nd, 2013.

Mark Wahlberg Eyes Avon Man

April 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of years ago, Hugh Jackman was all set to star in Avon Man, with the actor at the time seeing it as a priority. However for various reason he ended up dropping out of the film, and since then it’s pretty much been in stasis. Now though, Deadline reports that Mark Wahlberg is in early talks to star in the 20th Century Fox comedy Avon Man.

The movie is about a group of guys who are laid off from an auto dealership. One of them reluctantly becomes an Avon salesman. While he initially expects this to be emasculating, he relies on his charm and becomes a top seller. He then has to save his town and help his struggling family by recruiting his macho unemployed pals to hawk beauty products so that they can win a regional contest.

There’s no director currently attached, although getting one will be first order of business if Whalberg does sign on.

DiCaprio & Scorsese Confirmed For Wolf Of Wall Street

April 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Martin Scorsese has been flirting with The Wolf of Wall Street for years, with the project often seeming close to being his next movie, before he moves on to something else. However now it appears he’s finally going to make it, as Variety reports Scorsese is now locked in, with Leonardo DiCaprio starring and a plan to start shooting this summer.

Based on Jordan Belfort’s best-selling memoir The Wolf of Wall Street, DiCaprio will play Belfort, looking at his dramatic rise and fall on Wall Street, along with his hard-partying lifestyle and tumultuous personal life, which included drug and alcohol addiction. Terence Winter (The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire) wrote the screenplay.

Production on The Wolf of Wall Street is slated to begin in August in New York. It’ll be Scorsese and DiCaprio’s fifth movie together.

Mickey Rourke & Rosario Dawson Back For Sin City 2

April 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week it was confirmed that the long-awaited Sin City: A Dame to Kill For will finally start shooting this summer, after director Robert Rodriguez wraps on another sequel, Machete Kills. The initial said many of the original cast would return, while stopping short of announcing exactly who.

Rodriguez has now been talking to MTV and confirmed that Mickey Rourke and Rosario Dawson will both be back for the sequel. He says, “We still have to cast. I’m shooting Machete Kills next month, and we go right into Sin City. It might overlap, but we haven’t done any casting yet, except for the people who we know are already in it and returning. A Dame to Kill For, all those people come back. I just had lunch with Mickey [Rourke] this weekend. He’s all excited to come back, but he’s probably the first one. I saw Rosario [Dawson] too. I ran into her for something else, and she’s pumped. They’ve always been excited about doing another one, so that will be fun.”

It has been long rumored that Angelina Jolie may play the title role, although the director revealed he hasn’t reached out to her yet. “I haven’t even gotten to meet with her yet about it or discuss with Frank (Miller) about who we would want to go with or talk to first. That’s a fun process, but that probably won’t happen in the next month.” It’s also true that if the plan is to shoot this summer, Jolie is probably about, as she’s due to start shooting Malifecent in June.

Tony Danza Up For Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Directorial Debut

April 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Joseph Gordon Levitt started out in a sitcom (Third Rock From The Sun) and now for his directorial debut he’s reaching out to a sitcom legend and giving him a rare film role. Variety reports that Tony Danza has joined the cast of the untitled movie, which was formerly known as Don Jon’s Addiction. It’s not actually the first time they’ve worked together, as they both appeared in the 1994 comedy Angels in the Outfield.

As well as directing, Gordon-Levitt will play a womanising porn addict, who goes on a quest to become less selfish. Scarlett Johansson will play his girlfriend and Julianne Moore is portraying a widow who the main character meets at night school. Tony Danza will play the lothario’s father, who is obsessed with sports and doesn’t pay enough attention to his children.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt will direct from his own original screenplay, with production set to commence next month in Los Angeles.

Penelope Cruz Eyes Ridley Scott’s The Counselor

April 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The moment Cormac McCarthy sold his first screenplay, The Counselor, it was clear there was gonna be a lot of high profile interest in it, especially after Ridley Scott signed up to direct. In the last few weeks they’ve been putting together a great cast, with the latest news being that Penelope Cruz is eyeing a key role in the film. THR says that an official offer hasn’t been made yet, although one is expected very soon.

Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, and the Cruz’s husband, Javier Bardem, are already signed up, and while Angelina Jolie may still join them, it’s looking like scheduling issues with Malifecent may prevent it.

The story follows a down and out lawyer (Fassbender) in a Mexican border town, who tries his hand in the drug trade when he has cash flow issues. The attorney teams up with a wealthy acquaintance (Javier Bardem) and a shady businessman (Brad Pitt) to get their cocaine trafficking enterprise off the ground. Cruz would play the lawyer’s love interest.

Virginia Trailer – Dustin Lance Black’s directorial debut

April 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Virginia (or What’s With Virginia? as it was initially titled) debuted with mixed-to-bad reviews at the Toronto Film Festival a few months ago, but Dustin Lance Black’s directorial debut still seems like it’ll be worth a look. It’s out on the US in May and should reach the UK later this year.

Black is, of course, best known as the out and proud screenwriter of Milk and J. Edgar, but here thing are less historical and more satirical. In the film, a sheriff (Ed Harris) sees his state senate bid slide onto the ice when his daughter begins to date the son of a charming but psychologically disturbed woman (Jennifer Connelly) with whom the sheriff has engaged in a two-decades-long affair.

Some have commented that the trailer seems deceptive, as the film they saw plays out more tragic than the comic tone of the promo, However it has been completely re-edited since its TIFF debut, due to some of the severe criticism it came in for. Hopefully Dustin will have sorted things out, as the trailer does make the movie look decent enough.

Turin GLBT Film Festival Ad Has Fun With Taboos

April 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Some people love the gays, some people hate them, but are there some things we can all come together in being prejudiced against? That’s the questions the fun video above asks, which was made to advertise the 27th Turin GLBT Film Festival.

Set to Chopin’s second nocturne, it’s a simple but effective idea, even if you may ultimately disagree that about what it thinks we should shield a child’s eyes from. Click above for a bit of a giggle, and if you do happen to be in Turin between now and April 25th, go see some films at the festival!

Gay Twins Make A Film About Their Love Of Dolly Parton

April 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While the adoration of some gay icons, such as Barbra Streisand, is a bit of a mystery to me, I’m right there when it comes to worshipping the ground that Dolly Parton walks on. Now gay twins Gary and Larry Lane have decided to document their love of the singer with the documentary Hollywood To Dollywood.

The twins, both of whom are gay, left North Carolina over a decade ago to try their hand in Hollywood and have modeled, made commercials, gotten bit parts in movies and TV shows and been on the reality shows Fear Factor and Winter Wipeout, as well as writing scripts. They felt one of their screenplays was perfect for Dolly, but they weren’t sure how to get it to her.

They eventually decided to make a pilgrimage to her theme park, Dollywood, and document the experience of trying to get her the script during the park’s 25th Anniversary celebrations. So Larry, Gary and the latter’s boyfriend Mike, packed up and went on a cross-country road trip in an RV, with John Levin directing the documentary about them, which also looks at the difficulties the twins have faced with their family over their sexuality. They also got to chat with a few LGBT heroes such as Dustin Lance Black, actress Beth Grant and actors Chad Allen and Leslie Jordan along the way.

Dolly must have been impressed with the results as she’s now struck a deal with the twins to license 15 of her songs, including a couple of new ones, for use in the documentary, with the promise that 10% of each Blu-ray and DVD sale of the documentary would go to her Imagination Library, which works to improve literacy.

Hollywood To Dollywood is now available for pre-order in the US, and you can find out more on the movie’s website, where there’s also info on upcoming festival screening. (Source: Gay Star News)

Skyfall – Shanghai Set Video

April 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It wouldn’t be Bond if the production didn’t jet all over the world (although always coming back to its UK base, of course), and Skyfall is doing just that, with a new set video just released from the film’s Shanghai location shoot. The movie will hit cinemas on October 26th, but whet you appetite with the latest behind the scene look.
