26th BFI London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival Opens Today

March 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Today’s the day the 26th BFI London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival opens, with gala screenings of Cloudburst, starring Oscar-winners Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker.

The festival runs from now until April 1st, and while some of the screenings are already full, tickets are still available for many of the movies and events, so if you’re in London, head over to the festival’s website to find out more.

Over the next couple of weeks we’ll be bringing you a bit of coverage of some of the movies screening at the LLGFF, so keep an eyes out for that!

Highlights of the festival include two centrepiece screenings of powerful, award-winning dramas. Circumstance is an affecting account of a lesbian coming-of-age in contemporary Tehran, which won the Audience Award at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, while Absent is the unpredictable tale of a 16-year-old’s attempt to get close to his teacher, which won the Teddy Award at the 2011 Berlin Film Festival.

Other top films on the programme include The Perfect Family, starring Kathleen Turner as a Catholic woman coming to terms with her daughter’s sexuality, while Gun Hill Road tells the story of an ex-con struggling to accept that his teenage son is transitioning to female, and features a strong performance by young trans actor Harmony Santana (Eating Out: Drama Camp). The festival closes on April 1st with Bavo Defurne’s North Sea Texas, a compelling tale of teenage longing set in a Belgian coastal town.

Hangover Part III Set For May 2013

March 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We knew it was almost certainly coming (Warner put it into development before Part II came out), but now The Hangover Part III has been officially announced and a release date set for May 14th, 2013, which is Memorial Day weekend in the US.

Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis will reprise their roles as Phil, Stu and Alan, aka ‘the Wolfpack’. Director Todd Phillips commented, “I’m so excited to embark on another Hangover film with Bradley, Ed and Zach. We’re going to surprise a lot of people with the final chapter we have planned. It will be a fitting conclusion to our three-part opera of mayhem, despair and bad decisions.”

Phillips is therefore promising this will be the last, although if its even half the success of the previous movie, it’s likely Warner will want to find some way of continuing. Todd is writing the screenplay with Craig Mazin, who also collaborated with him on the screenplay for The Hangover Part II. Production on the film is projected to begin in September 2012.

The Host Teaser Trailer

March 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Stephenie Meyer’s book, The Host, wasn’t as well received as her Twilight novels, it has the potential to make a very intriguing movie. Now the first teaser trailer for the film version of The Host has arrived and tells us that in the future, we’ll all have creepy eyes! In The Host, our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact. Most of humanity has succumbed, including Soarise Ronan’s main character, Melanie Stryder. However while normally the human is completely subdued by their host, in Melanie’s case, her personality flashes through, intriguing her Host, known as The Wanderer, and setting them off on a quest to find the last free humans. The film is due out in the UK March 2013.

Billy Bob Thornton May Come Out Of The Furnace

March 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Crazy Heart helmer Scott Cooper signed up to direct Out Of The Furnace well over a year ago, and even by that point the script had been doing the rounds for quite a while, going through the hands of Ridley Scott and others. However now things are finally coming together, with Cooper busy putting the cast together.

Christian Bale and Zoe Saldana are already attached, and now Deadline reports that Billy Bob Thornton and Forest Whitaker are in talks to join them, playing lowlife characters. The movie is about an ex-con (Bale) who goes on a vengeful rampage right after his release from prison, in order to avenge the murder of his younger brother. Saldana is set to play Bale’s long-suffering girlfriend. Viggo Mortensen was said to be in line for the main villain role, but he’s now apparently passed, as that’s the part Thornton is being lined up for, while Whitaker will be a sleazy bookie.

Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) is directing Out of the Furnace from his own script, which is based on Brad Ingelsby’s screenplay, The Low Dweller. Production is due to start fairly soon, as Bale wants to slot it in before he sets off on a promotional press tour for The Dark Knight Rises, and then goes to work for Terrence Malick on a couple of movies.

Mojave Gets Writer/Director William Monahan

March 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

William Monahan has won much acclaim for his screenplays for the likes of Body of Lies, Edge Of Darkness and The Departed (winning as Oscar for the latter), and didn’t do a bad job with his first directorial venture, London Boulevard. Now he wants to go back behind the camera as Deadline reports he’s set up a deal to write and direct the crime thriller, Mojave.

Plot details for the project are being held under wraps, but producer Will Green commented, “This script is Monahan at his absolute best.”

The film will be a low budget venture, as Atlas Independent, which is producing the movie, specialises in movies with a budget under $10 million. Production is expected to begin in Southern California this summer.

Twilight Helmer Catherine Hardwicke Wants To Make A Diamond

March 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Catherine Hardwicke, director of Twilight, Red Riding Hood and Thirteen, may be getting groovy in 60s London soon, as Screendaily says she’s attached to Diamond. Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, the scriptwriting team behind Frankie And Alice are handling the screenplay.

The plot for Diamond is being kept under wraps, although it is known that it’s a gangster movie set in the swinging 60s in London.

It won’t be Hardwicke’s next movie though, as it appears she wants to reunite with Evan Rachel Wood for erotic thriller Plush first, making Diamond afterwards, with shooting likely to take place next year.

Michael K. Williams To Play Ol’ Dirty Bastard In New Biopic

March 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rap biopics don’t have a great reputation, but Michael K. Williams (The Wire, Boardwalk Empire) is hoping to change all that, as he’s set to star as the late hip-hop artist Ol’ Dirty Bastard (real name: Russell Jones) in the film Dirty White Boy. Joaquin Baca-Asay is making his feature directorial debut with the film, from an original screenplay by Brent Hoff.

Based on a true story, Dirty White Boy chronicles the astounding rise of Jarred Weisfeld, a 22-year-old VH1-intern-turned-manager, and his misadventures with legendary rapper Ol’ Dirty Bastard leading up to the performer’s tragic death in 2004. The film hasthe full support and co-operation of Weisfeld as well as Jones’ mother.

Williams is well known for his role as Omar Little on The Wire, as well as Chalky White on Boardwalk Empire. He also appeared in John Hillcoat’s The Road, Todd Solondz’ Life During Wartime, and Antoine Fuqua’s Brooklyn’s Finest. It isn’t certain when the movie might start shooting.

Cosmopolis Teaser Trailer

March 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There were a lot of raised eyebrowd when David Cronenberg cast Robert Pattinson in Cosmopolis, largely because it seemed such a jump from the world of Twilight. However as this trailer shows, the movie will show a different side to Pattinson and it’s likely to be intense! The film, based on Don DeLillo’s book, sees R-Patz as young billionaire Eric Packer, who starts out just wanting to get a haircut, but as the day progresses and he travel around New York, he must deal with the fallout from the decisions he’s made in his life. Jesus Henry Christ Trailer

March 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jesus Henry Christ seems like it would like to be The Kids At All Right, but a little more quirky and with fewer lesbian mothers! The film stars Toni Collette as the mother of a precociously smart 10-year-old who want to know who his father is, which sends him on a quest to discover more about the man who donated the sperm to make him. The film should be out later this year.
