Disney’s big-budget sci-fi fantasy, John Carter, hits cinemas this Friday and to help prepare us, 10 minutes from the opening of the movie has popped up online, so we can see what happens to American Civil War veteran John before he gets mysteriously transported to Mars. Carter seems to be the very defnition of an angry young man, who isn’t having much fun in the Arizona territory, as while he’s looking for a cave full of gold, he’s got to deal with Bryan Cranston and his lovely blonde wig.

Tina Fey & Owen Wilson May Seek Admission
For a couple of months, Tina Fey has been thinking about starring in Paul Weitz’s movie Admission, which surprised some as the film appears to be a drama rather than her more usual comic territory. Now it appears she may get some company in the movie from another actor stepping outside his comedy safe-zone, as Vulture reports that Owen Wilson is mulling over a role in the film.
Based on Jean Hanff Korelitz’s novel, ‘Fey would play an Ivy League admissions officer named Portia Nathan whose relationship with a 17-year-old recruitment prospect threatens to unravel her personal, romantic, and professional lives. Wilson, we hear, would play a teacher at an alternative high school who falls for Fey.’
Fey is apparently close to signing, while Wilson is currently weighing his options, which likely include other roles that will pay better than this one. However, after the success of Midnight In Paris, he may well be looking for other projects that potentially give him the same critical response as Woody Allen’s flick.
Weitz hopes to shoot the movie in June, once Fey has finished the current season of 30 Rock.
There’s No Good Deed For Idris Elba
Idris Elba feels like he’s on the edge of breaking really big in the US, and hopefully No Good Deed will help him on his way (as will his recently announced role as a young Nelson Mandella in The Long Walk To Freedom), as THR reports he’s signed up for the movie, alongside Taraji P. Henson.
Aimee Lagos’s screenplay is about a former DA-turned-stay-at-home mom and her two small children who are terrorised and kidnapped from their home when she invites a good-looking mysterious stranger in to wait for help after his car ran off the road.
Henson will play the terrified mom, while Elba will be showing his range as the deadly kidnapper. It’ll also reteam Idris with director Sam Miller, who helmed episodes of his detective drama Luther. Shooting will start in April in Georgia
Rufus Sewell And Anne Heche Join The Occult
Rufus Sewell had planned to be in Australia now shooting Paradise Lost, but with that movie pretty much cancelled, he’s now got some free time, and so Variety reports he’s teaming up with Anne Heche and newcomer Alycia Debnam-Carey for Christian E. Christiansen’s (The Roommate) The Occult.
The films is about the members of a commune, who believe that an age-old prophecy about the devil’s daughter coming to Earth is about to come true. When a series of murders happens just as this is about to happen, the community isn’t sure if it is the work of this prophecy, or someone silencing their own members from within.
Shooting is scheduled to begin later this month in North Carolina.
Simon Baker Wants To Give It A Year
While he’s had huge success on TV as The Mentalist, Simon Baker’s film career has been slightly more low key. Indeed it’s easy to forget he was even in The Devil Wears Prada and The Ring 2. However he’ll be hoping he makes a bit more of an impression in the rom-com I Give It A Year, which Variety reports he’s set to star in, opposite the already attached Rafe Spall.
The film is based on an original script by Dan Mazer, who will also direct, about a pair of newlyweds who go through various trials and tribulations during their first year of marriage. It’s a fairly generic set-up, but hopefully Mazer, who cut his teeth on the likes of Da Ali G Show can make it work.
The movie will shoot later this spring, once Baker has wrapped on the current season of The Mentalist.
Emmy Rossum On For Beautiful Creatures
Emmy Rossum has been performing since she was a teen opera star and can currently be seen in the US version of Shameless. Now Variety reports The Day After Tomorrow and Phantom Of The Opera actress has joined the cast of Beautiful Creatures for Warner Bros. and writer-director Richard LaGravenese.
The story centers on two teenage lovers (Jack O’Connell and Alice Englert) who discover dark secrets hidden by their families. Emmy Rossum will play Ridley, the cousin of Alice Englert’s character, who turned into a dark witch on her 16th birthday. Viola Davis and Emma Thompson are also set to star.
Richard LaGravenese will direct from his own screenplay, which is adapted from Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl’s novel. Production is scheduled to begin next month in New Orleans, with a US release already set for February 1st, 2013
The Lorax Break Box Office Records
Universal will be celebrating today after The Lorax didn’t just beat expectations, it absolute annihilated them. Most had thought it was looking at a opening around the $30 million mark, but it ended up with a fantastic $70 million, which is one of the best starts ever for an animated movie. It’s also amongst the best March openings and the top first three days for a film based on a book by Dr. Seuss.
Project X didn’t do too badly either. With no big stars and a ‘found footage’ feel, many were uncertain whether the film would find an audience as there aren’t many films to directly compare it to, but it made a more than respectable $20 million.
They were the only two new entries, although The Artist did get a bit of a post-Oscars bump, re-entering that box office top 10. Overall it was the best weekend of the year so far, which will have Hollywood being cautiously optimistic after a rocky few months.
Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of March 2nd-4th.

New The Hobbit Video Blog
Peter Jackson is a big fan of keeping people in the loop with his movies, releasing behind-the-scenes video blogs covering various aspects of the production. We’ve already had a few for The Hobbit, and now a new one has been released in which Jackson takes us on location to the rural parts of New Zealand where he’s recreating Middle Earth. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is released December 14th, 2012, with The Hobbit: There And Back Again coming a year later.
That’s My Boy Trailer
I’m pretty much immune to the charms of Adam Sandler, but he’s undoubtedly popular, as even his movies that are considered flops generally turn a profit when all is said and done. To my eyes, even the trailer for That’s My Boy is painful to view, but it’ll undoubtedly be a big hit. In the movie Sandler plays an absent father who moves in with his son right before his wedding and soon begins sparring with his daughter-in-law, as well as causing chaos in everyone’s lives. It’s due out in June.
Despicable Me 2 Teaser Trailer
If you’ve been missing the minions you can now get a little fix with this first trailer for Despicable Me 2, which sees the little lozenges return, along with Gru and his adopted family. The film is out summer 2013, but for now enjoy the minions take on the classic tune, ‘Barbara Anne’.
