George Clooney Says He’ll Never Deny Gay Rumours

March 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

It’s almost a rite of passage in Hollywood that rumours start to circulate that you’re gay. Indeed it’s believed some young stars (or at least their management) foster the rumours in the hope it’ll help their career. Rumours have swirled around George Clooney for years, largely based around the fact that while he’s had a string of beautiful girlfriends, he’s never gotten married.

Ahead of his one night only appearance in a staged reading of Dustin Lance Black’s play 8, (about the attempts to get Prop 8, which banned gay marriage in California, overturned) he’s been talking to The Advocate, and touched on the fact a lot of people want to think he’s gay.

He says, ‘I think it’s funny, but the last thing you’ll ever see me do is jump up and down, saying, “These are lies!” That would be unfair and unkind to my good friends in the gay community. I’m not going to let anyone make it seem like being gay is a bad thing. My private life is private, and I’m very happy in it. Who does it hurt if someone thinks I’m gay? I’ll be long dead and there will still be people who say I was gay. I don’t give a shit.”

He also talks about why he got involved in the fight for marriage equality, saying ‘It’s always been this albatross that stood out to me as the final leg of the civil rights movement. It really came to a head during the 2004 elections, when it was used as a wedge issue, and it was a very effective tool to keep the Republicans in office and to avoid talking about other issues. Well before Prop. 8, I’ve made the point that every time we’ve stood against equality, we’ve been on the wrong side of history. It’s the same kind of argument they made when they didn’t want blacks to serve in the military, or when they didn’t want blacks to marry whites. One day the marriage equality fight will look as archaic as George Wallace standing on the University of Alabama steps keeping James Hood from attending college because he was black. People will be embarrassed to have been on the wrong side. So it’s encouraging to know that this too will seem like such a silly argument to our next generation. There are even a lot of young conservatives today for whom marriage equality isn’t an issue. It always takes government an extra generation to catch up to the people.’

As for his bromance with Brad Pitt, he comments, ‘People think Brad and I hang out all the time, but the truth is that we see each other very rarely, maybe a couple times a year. I’ve had great fun spending time with my friend again over the awards season. Not only do I enjoy him as a person and respect his talent, but I also love what he does in the world. I can’t speak highly enough about how hard he works at making the world better. I’m very proud to call him my friend.

It’s an interesting interview, so take a look.

Neighborhood Watch Teaser Trailer & Poster

March 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The first poster and promo for this summer’s action comedy, Neighborhood Watch, have arrived, and while they don’t tell us much about the plot, they do reveal that perhaps Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade are taking the whole idea of Neighborhood Watch way too seriously. The guy guys set up the group as an excuse to escape their humdrum lives one night a week. But when they accidentally discover that their town has become overrun with aliens posing as ordinary suburbanites, they have no choice but to save their neighborhood – and the world – from total extermination. The movie is due out August 22nd.

The kids trying to enjoy their Spring Break at Lake Victoria didn’t have much fun when a bunch of prehistoric pirahna decided to kill everyone in Pirahna 3D, and now the beasties are moving on to a water park for the sequel. With its tongue shoved even further into its cheek, the movie adds the likes of David Hasselhoff to the mix for more fishy madness! The film’s due out this spring.

Bernie Trailer – Jack Black tries a darker brand of humour

March 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jack Black and director Richard Linklater scored a big hit School Of Rock, and now they’re getting back together for Bernie, which will see Black trying a darker brand of comedy than we’ve had from him before. He plays a small-town Texas mortician who strikes up a friendship with a wealthy widow (Shirley Maclaine). However when he kills her, he goes to great lengths to create the illusion that she’s still alive. Matthew McConaughey co-stars, back with Linklater for the first time since Dazed & Confused. There’s no UK release date set as yet, but it’s out in the US April 27th.

The Town Scribe Peter Craig Writing Top Gun 2

March 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I know many of you out there have been hoping that the entire idea of making a sequel to Top Gun would quietly go off and die somewhere, but Tony Scott is still keen on it, Tom Cruise has agreed to consider returning (depending on the script), and now Variety reports that The Town writer Peter Craig has been hired to write the movie, taking over from X-Men: First Class writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz.

The 1986 original follows students of an elite US Flying school for advanced fighter pilots, who compete to be best in the class, with Tom Cruise’s Maverick romancing the teacher. The sequel is said to be a look at Maverick in his later years, with Scott suggesting he’s interested in the move from fighter jets to remotely piloted vehicles, so Cruise’s character may be dealing with being made obsolete.

It’s not known when Top Gun 2 might start filming.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters Gets Its Fates

March 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Although it feels like they should have already made a Percy Jackson sequel if they were going to, Sea of Monsters is slowly moving forward, with Logan Lerman set to return in the lead role. Now the film has cast the actresses who will play the Fates in the movie, Missi Pyle (The Artist), Yvette Nicole Brown (Community), and Mary Birdsong (The Descendants).

As well as Lerman, Alexandra Daddario and Brandon T. Jackson will both return as Annabeth and Grover. The story for the sequel follows Percy on a journey under the sea, where he must rescue his kidnapped friend and find the mythical Golden Fleece.

Thor Freudenthal is directing from a screenplay by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. It isn’t known exactly when the film will start shooting, but Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters already has a March 27th, 2013 release date set. (Source: Variety)

Downton Helmer Brian Percival Directing The Book Thief

March 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After Dowton Abbey’s huge success in the US, it’s not surprising Hollywood is sniffing around those who’ve directed episodes of the series. Helming Downton certainly seems to have helped Brian Percival, who Deadline reports has now signed on to direct Fox 2000’s movie, The Book Thief, adapted from Marcus Zusak’s novel.

The Book Thief follows Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich who survives World War II by stealing books (you’d have thought food would have been a more sensible thing to steal, but never mind). Aided by her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with neighbours during bombing raids. One of those who benefits from the books is the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.

Michael Petroni adapted the novel for the big screen, with production is expected to begin this summer.

Gerard Butler Wants To Be Brilliant

March 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s getting to the point where Gerard Butler signing on for a project should make us all wary, but the actor has boarded Lakeshore Entertainment’s diamond-heist thriller, Brilliant, taking over a role that was originally set for Eric Bana (but who has since moved on).

The movie reunites the actor with Robert Luketic, after they previously worked together on The Ugly Truth. Gillian Gorfil’s script for Brilliant follows a group of seasoned thieves who recruit a small-time criminal for a specialist job as they prepare for the biggest diamond heist of all time.

The movie is now busy trying to land a female lead before shooting starts this May in Boston.

Napoleon Dynamite Helmer Jared Hess Set For Disney’s The Pet

March 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jared Hess’ career so far hasn’t really lived up to the promise of Napoleon Dynamite, with the director’s last movie, Gentleman Broncos, completely flopping. However he’s now returning and it seems he wants to go a bit more mainstream as Variety reports that producer Scott Rudin and Disney have signed Hess to direct the sci-fi family comedy, The Pet.

The film is based on an original concept from Matt Lieberman, which follows a man who gets abducted by aliens, is taken to their planet and then turned into a family pet. The script was recently rewritten by Timothy Dowling.

It’s certainly a potentially fun premise, and hopefully Hess can do it proud.

Emma Watson On For Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring

March 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Emma Watson’s plans to stop acting for a while and head for university seem to have been well and truly binned as she’s continuing to sign up for new parts, with the latest being Variety reporting that she’s been cast in Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring.

The project is based on the true story of six teenagers who broke into celebrity homes in the Hollywood Hills between October 2008 and August 2009. They made off with more than $3 million in items from the pads of such stars as Paris Hilton, Audrina Patridge, Megan Fox, Rachel Bilson, Orlando Bloom, and Lindsay Lohan. It isn’t known what character Watson will play.

Sofia Coppola is directing The Bling Ring from her own script, with shooting starting later this year.
