Brave is something a little bit different from Pixar – but then, you can say that about pretty much every new movie they make – and now a new poster and a two and a half minute clip from the movie have arrived, featuring some Celtic highland games and young warrior Merida showing what a headstrong woman she can be. Here’s the synopsis: ‘Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In “Brave,” a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts. Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Wise Woman (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.’ It’s out in the UK on August 13th.

Dominic Cooper & Katherine Herfurth Have Passion
For a while now, Brian De Palma has been putting together a movie called Passion, which will be his first film since 2007’s Redacted. Now the cast has grown as Mediabiz (via The Playlist) reports that Dominic Cooper and Karoline Herfurth (The Reader) have signed up to star opposite the already cast Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace.
The film is a remake of Alan Corneau’s French thriller Love Crime, about a young woman who takes revenge on an older female executive who has taken advantage of the protagonist one too many times. In the original, which starred Ludivine Sagnier and Kristen Scott Thomas, the younger woman steals the older one’s ideas, which causes their rivalry to start burning, until it reaches the point of murder! However De Palma has swapped things round so it’s the older woman nicking things from the young hotshot.
There’s no news on exactly who Cooper and Herfurth will play, but shooting is expected to start soon.
Robert Zemeckis Takes On Demonologist
While we’re still waiting for Robert Zemeckis’ first film since he’s come back to the world of live-action filmmaking (it’ll be Flight with Denzel Washington), he’s busy lining up a whole range of projects as both director and producer. Now Deadline reports that Universal Pictures and Zemeckis are teaming up for an adaptation of Andrew Pyper’s upcoming book Demonologist.
The story is about a professor who studies John Milton’s Paradise Lost, and accepts a free trip to Italy. A demon then appears to have killed his daughter, and he must go on an arduous journey to get her back. The book doesn’t even have a publisher as of yet, but Universal made a preemptive deal for the film rights (which should ensure publishers come running).
Robert Zemeckis will produce Demonologist alongside his ImageMovers partners Jack Rapke and Steve Starkey. It’s not known who will direct.
William Fichtner Takes Over Lone Ranger Villain Role
The delay to the shooting schedule of Lone Ranger caused by Disney putting on the brakes while they sorted out the ever-ballooning budget was inevitably going to cause some casting issues. Most of the actors have stayed onboard, but one who was forced to drop out is Dwight Yoakam.
Now Deadline reports William Fichtner has been brought in to replace him, which is good news as the Drive Angry actor is always good value for money. Fichtner will play Butch Cavendish, leader of the Cavendish gang and the pic’s primary villain. Christopher Lloyd played this same character in 1981’s The Legend of the Lone Ranger.
Shooting on The Lone Ranger is due to start soon for release on May 31, 2013, with Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Ruth Wilson, Helena Bonham Carter, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Tom Wilkinson and James Frain all onboard
Jai Courtney Playing John McLane’s Son In A Good Day To Die Hard
There’s been a fair amount of speculation about who would play John McLane’s son in A Good Day To Die Hard, the fifith installment of the Die Hard series. The likes of Liam Hemsworth, Aaron Paul, Ben Foster, Paul Dano, and Milo Ventimiglia are all said to have tested for the part, but now the role has gone to somebody would wasn’t even mentioned in previous rumours about the role, Spartacus: Blood & Sand actor Jai Courtney.
20th Century Fox even released a shot of Courtney during a screen test with Bruce Willis, which you can see above.
A Good Day to Die Hard puts McClane on an international stage – truly a NYC fish out of water in Moscow – and introduces his estranged son Jack, who may even be more of a hardass than his father. Despite their differences, they must work together to keep each other alive – and the world safe for democracy. The film begins production this April, for a February 14, 2013 release.
Last year, Courtney landed a starring role opposite Tom Cruise in One Shot, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, so the Aussie actor’s star is definitely on the rise.
Edgar Wright Directing Johnny Depp In Night Stalker
Edgar Wright is still busy working on Ant Man and a couple weeks ago he released a pic suggesting he and Simon Pegg were finally reuniting for their planned new movie, but now Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World and Shaun Of The Dead director Edgar Wright has added another movie to his plate, signing on to direct The Night Stalker for Disney and producer/star Johnny Depp.
The project was initially set up by Depp last summer and is based on a 1972 TV movie of the same name, which starred Darren McGavin as Carl Kolchak, a journalist who begins tracking a serial killer, only to discover the murderer is actually a vampire. The TV movie spawned the series Kolchak: The Night Stalker, which debuted in 1974. Johnny Depp will play Carl Kolchak, tracking a vampire rather than being one, as he is in this summer’s Dark Shadows.
The Night Stalker doesn’t have a screenwriter in place as of yet, although that will likely change soon with Edgar Wright attached (he may even write it himself). (Source: Deadline)
Ice Age: ‘The ScraTIST’ Featurette
With The Artist expected to clean up at the Oscars this weekend, the guys behind Ice Age have decided to give Scrat and the other prehistoric critters a bit of a silent cinema makeover in this new toon/featurette, ‘The SraTIST’. Ice Age returns later this year with Continental Drift, in which Manny, Diego, and Sid embark upon their greatest adventure, after cataclysm sets an entire continent adrift. Separated from the rest of the herd, they use an iceberg as a makeshift ship, which launches them on an epic seafaring quest. Manny and the gang are challenged like never before to become heroes and do the impossible, as they encounter exotic sea creatures, explore a brave new world, and battle ruthless pirates. Meanwhile Scrat’s reunion with his beloved but cursed acorn catapults him to places no prehistoric squirrel has gone before. That’s out July 6th, but for now enjoy the Artist inspired featurette.
Skyfall Video Blog Released
The makers of James Bond are getting with the 21st Century and have released a video blog, which sees Sam Mendes talking about making the movie, and noting that despite the fact he’s British, this is his seventh film and the first time he’s shot in the UK! There’s also a new pic with Judi Dench on set, so enjoy both that and the vlog. Skyfall hits UK cinemas in October.
Josh Duhamel & Dan Fogler Taking The Scenic Route
Josh Duhamel has spent the last few years flitting around the edge of being a proper movie star, without really making it – after all, most people forget he was even in the Transformers movies, which have been his biggest successes.
Now Deadline reports he’s taking the lead in a new movie he’ll hope will raise his film star status. He’ll appear alongside Dan Fogler in Scenic Route, about two former college buddies who go on a road trip and become stranded in the desert. As they begin to realise they might never be rescued, they begin to have heated fights, both emotionally and physically.
They may sound pretty miserable, but apparently it a comedy, written by The Beaver’s Kyle Killen. There’s no news on when it might shoot.
Michael Fassbender Confirmed For Ridley Scott’s The Counselor
Ridley Scott normally spends month, sometimes years, developing movies, but in the last few weeks The Counselor has come out of nowhere, nabbed Ridley as a director and will start shooting May 1st. There’s a good reason things have come together fast, as that’s because it’s the first script by acclaimed writer Cormac McCarthy.
A couple of weeks ago it was reported Michael Fassbender was circling the movie, and now Deadline reports the actor has been confirmed for the film, which will reunite him with Ridley following this summer’s Prometheus.
Insiders have said The Counselor is “No Country For Old Men on steroids,” about a respected lawyer who thinks he can dip a toe in to the drug business without getting sucked down. It is a bad decision and he tries his best to survive it and get out of a desperate situation.
Now Scott is moving on to finding his very evil bad guy, who Deadline compares to No Country’s Javier Bardem. Names such as Jeremy Renner, Bradley Cooper and Brad Pitt are being bandied about, but there’s nothing certain.
