The Grey Tops The US Box Office

January 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While many thought The Grey would top the US box office, not that many believed the R-rated thriller would hit $20 million in its first three days, but with the drawing power of Liam Neeson and a fairly clear premise, it’s done just that.

One For The Money, starring Katherine Heigl, beat out modest expectations for a third place finish in its first three days with $11.7 million. There had been hope this adaptation of Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum novels would be the start of a franchise, but it’s going to have to make a fair bit more cash around the world to make that worthwhile.

The only other new entry was Man On A Ledge, which took a soft $8.3 million. Many are blaming this on muddled marketing, as the Sam Worthington flick got decent reviews.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of January 27th-29th.

Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
The Grey $20.0 $20.0
Underworld Awakening $12.5 $42.1
One For The Money $11.7 $11.7
Red Tails $10.4 $33.7
Man On A Ledge $8.3 $8.3
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close $7.1 $21.1
The Descendants $6.5 $58.8
Contraband $6.5 $56.4
Beauty and the Beast $5.3 $41.1
Haywire $4.0 $15.2

Brad Pitt Says He May Break Marriage Equality Pledge

January 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In a show of gay-straight solidarity, several years ago Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie pledged they wouldn’t get married until that right is extended to all couples, irrespective of gender. While the two have so far kept to that, Pitt says it’s getting increasingly difficult to stick to as their children grow up.

The a-list star told THR, “We’d actually like to, and it seems to mean more and more to our kids. We made this declaration some time ago that we weren’t going to do it till everyone can. But I don’t think we’ll be able to hold out.

“It means so much to my kids, and they ask a lot. And it means something to me, too, to make that kind of commitment.”

Pitt refused to be drawn too much on the comment, and so far there’s no sign he and Jolie are actually going to marry, but he did add, “I’m not going to go any further. But to be in love with someone and be raising a family with someone and want to make that commitment and not be able to is ludicrous, just ludicrous.”

Pitt & Jolie aren’t the only Hollywood stars to have made a similar commitment, as Charlize Theron and Stuart Townsend have also said they won’t get hitched until there is marriage equality in the US (despite the fact neither of them is American).

Pitt is a staunch ally of gay rights causes though and has spoken out for same-sex marriage on several occasions. When New York made it legal last year, he issued a statement saying, “It is encouraging that New York has joined the movement to grant equal marriage rights to its citizens,’ Pitt said. ‘But it is each American’s Constitutional right to marry the person they love, no matter what state they inhabit. No state should decide who can marry and who cannot. Thanks to the tireless work of so many, someday soon this discrimination will end and every American will be able to enjoy their equal right to marriage.”

While Brad and Angelina’s show of solidarity is great, there probably won’t be too many people who’d begrudge them getting married. After all, it’s because it’s such a significant show of individual commitment that marriage equality has become a touchstone of the equal rights movement.

The Artist has been charming audiences around the world and the bookies say that the smart money is on the movie to win big at the Oscars. James McAvoy Looks Stylish In First Welcome To The Punch Pic

January 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The pic above is the first we’ve seen from the new Brit thriller, Welcome To the Punch, which follows in the long line of UK-based gangster movies. It’s an action thriller about a London detective (James McAvoy) and an ex-criminal (Mark Strong) who’s forced to return from his Icelandic hideaway. They become unlikely allies in a bid to expose a high-level conspiracy. The cast also includes Andrea Riseborough and Peter Mullan.

The second movie from BAFTA nominated Colin Creevy, Welcome To The Punch is due out on September 7th. If all the film is as stylish as the pic above, it’ll be one to watch out for. On the script Creevy comments, “We wanted to be as ambitious as possible. People are held back by a budget and a concept sometimes, but I knew that if I made it good enough it wouldn’t matter.” And it might well be good as the script placed third on the 2010 Brit List (the UK version of the Black List of the best unproduced screenplays).

The image comes via ScreenDaily which also has an interesting article about the making of the movie, which is worth a read is you’re interested in young filmmakers shooting for the stars.

January 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Five new images from the Avengers have surface via Marvel.com, which if nothing else shows that while the scarring on Nick Fury’s face has been rather underplayed when we’ve seen it before, but it appears it’s going to be much more prominent in The Avenger. Indeed, the spider-webbing scars in the pic above have already led some to wonder if they’re going to play a role in the movie somehow.

Sarah Jessica Parker Replacing Demi Moore In Lovelace

January 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With Demi Moore in rehab (officially due to exhaustion and unofficially due to substance issues that led to a recently released 911 call when she fell into a semi-conscious state), she’s not going to be able to take part in Lovelace, which is currently filming.

Moore was due to play well known feminist and activist Gloria Steinem, and now Variety reports she’ll be replaced by Sarah Jessica Parker, in what is believed to be essentially a cameo. Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (Howl, The Celluloid Closet) will direct, telling the story of porn actress Linda Lovelace, star of the infamous Deep Throat, who later became a noted anti-porn advocate.

Amanda Seyfried will play the title role, with Peter Sarsgaard portraying Lovelace’s husband, Chuck Traynor. Parker joins recently announced cast members Chloe Sevigny, Debi Mazar, Cory Hardrict, Adam Brody, Eric Roberts, Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale, Chris Noth, Robert Patrick, Wes Bentley, Sharon Stone and Juno Temple.

New Survey Paints Mixed Picture For Gay UK Actors

January 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s a perception that while US actors have to stay in the closet, in Britain you can be out and proud and nobody will care. However that’s a perception that’s largely created because of the number of well-known gay British actors there are (Rupert Everett, Alan Cumming, Russell Tovey), rather than any empirical evidence.

To try and get a better insight into being a gay actor in the UK, the performers’ union, Equity, conducted a survey of gay actors to try and find out what life is like for them in 2012. It paints a mixed picture to say the least. While 81% of respondents said they were openly gay in their professional life and 94% were open to performers they are working with, 43% said they wouldn’t be so open talking to their agent. Perhaps most worrying, 35% of respondents said they have experienced direct homophobia in their professional lives.

The last two statistics have been described as ‘troubling’ by Equity equalities officer Max Beckmann, who said “This goes some way to explaining that many respondents say they weigh up whether or not to come out on a job by job basis, and while not hiding their orientation often do not ‘broadcast it’. Comments also suggest that actors remain fearful that coming out will hinder their prospects of being cast in certain roles such as romantic leads.”

On the plus side he notes, “The finding that 81% of survey respondents are out in their professional lives and that 73% found the decision to be out easy is hugely encouraging and suggests an industry in which it is safe to be out.”

It’s particularly interesting that comparatively few actors have come out to their agents. In the US it is agents (and casting directors) who are often blamed for keeping actors in the closet. A fear that it will affect an actor’s career – and therefore the agent’s 10% commission – means it’s believed many will strongly encourage their clients to keep they sexuality hidden. It seems this is incredibly common in America, where young actors have the fear of God drummed into them about staying in the closet if they want to get roles, but it would appears UK professionals feel there may be some truth to it as well.

Actors do seem divided on whether being out and proud will hurt your career. Rupert Everett suggested in a 2009 Observer interview, that despite the fact he came out, “It just doesn’t work and you’re going to hit a brick wall at some point. You’re going to manage to make it roll for a certain amount of time, but at the first sign of failure they’ll cut you right off… Honestly, I would not advise any actor necessarily, if he was really thinking of his career, to come out.”

Others have rejected his interpretation, feeling that he’s merely blaming a lull in his ridiculously successful on being openly gay, when few actors reach and sustain the heights he briefly managed whether they’re gay or not. Ben Daniels reacted to Everett’s comments saying “I would never advise anyone to stay in the closet to further their careers – I’m sure it leads to big fat gay ulcers. There are actors I know who won’t come out, and I can see it crippling them as human beings. It’s a great shame that people can’t be who they are in the 21st century, and people won’t let them be who they are.”

President of Equity, Malcolm Sinclair takes a rather measured view of the survey findings, saying: “I have never felt that being gay has worked against me but the finding in Equity’s own survey that just under half of all gay performers are not out to their agent in the UK is worrying. But then work is scarce and, whether sexuality is a barrier or not, people may just err on the side of caution. They don’t want to test the water to see if it’s all right. I think the great issue today is the nightmare problems facing gay teenagers in coping with vicious bullying in schools.”

Fresh Lockout Trailer Surfaces

January 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For ages there were plans to remake Escape From New York, and while those have fallen through, we’re getting something very similar with Lockout, which stars Guy Pearce as a wrongly convicted criminal who’s offered his freedom if he can rescue the president’s daughter (Maggie Grace) from an outer space prison that’s been taken over by violent inmates. From the evidence of this trailer, Pearce is definitely channelling the spirit of Snake Plissken. The Luc Besson co-written flick is due out April 13th, 2012.

New Mirror Mirror Trailer

January 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When the first trailer for Mirror Mirror arrived online, the main reaction to the OTT farce on display was, ‘What the hell is that?’ It’s fair to say that in the battle of the Snow White movies, the Mirror Mirror teaser was roundly trounced by the entrancing first look at Snow White & the Huntsman. Now a new Mirror Mirror trailer has arrived, which tones things down and makes things look more traditionally fairy tale-esque and palatable.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Mirror Mirror is a spectacular reimagining of the classic fairy tale starring Oscar® winner Julia Roberts as the Queen, Lily Collins (The Blind Side) as Snow White, Armie Hammer (The Social Network) as Prince Alcott, Sean Bean (“The Game of Thrones”, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) as the King and Nathan Lane (The Lion King, The Birdcage) as the Queen’s hapless and bungling servant, Brighton.

‘An evil queen steals control of a kingdom and an exiled princess enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright in a spirited adventure comedy filled with jealousy, romance and betrayal that will capture the imagination of audiences the world over.

‘Visionary director Tarsem Singh (Immortals) rewrites fairy tale history as a wicked enchantress (Roberts) schemes and scrambles for control of a spirited orphan’s (Collins) throne and the attention of a charming prince (Hammer). When Snow White’s beauty wins the heart of the prince that she desperately pursues, the Queen banishes her to the forest, where a ravening man-eating beast hungrily awaits.

‘Rescued by a band of diminutive highway robbers, Snow White grows into an indomitable young woman determined to take back her realm from the treacherous Queen. With the support of her subjects, she roars into action in an epic battle that blends spectacle, magic and contemporary humor in Singh’s signature, jaw-dropping visual style.’ The film is due out March 16th.
