Take A Look At The Lesbian Story Cut From Love Actually

November 29, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Love-Actually-anne-reidRichard Curtis’ Love Actually is one of those films that managed to maintain its popularity since it was released. Indeed it is perhaps better thought of now by its legion of fans than it was on its initial release.

Richard Curtis’ film’s ensemble structure, featuring numerous different storylines meant it was almost certain quite a lot of material would get left on the cutting room floor. As the DVD special features show, that included a lesbian storyline featuring Anne Reid as a headmistress with a sick female lover, played by Frances de la Tour.

Curtis comments, “The idea was meant to be that you just casually met this very sort of stern headmistress… Later on in the film … we suddenly fell in with this headmistress and you realize no matter how unlikely it seems, that any character you come across in life has their own complicated tale of love.”

The writer director says he was sorry to lose the storyline, but it appears it was decided it didn’t feel it fitted the final edit. Even though Reid’s character is linked to the other storylines by the fact she runs the school Emma Thompson’s son attends, she wasn’t seen in the movie, let alone her partner.

Take a look at some of the deleted scenes and Curtis’ thoughts on them below. [Read more…]

10 Years After Brokeback Jake Gyllenhaal Thinks It’s Now OK To Be Gay In Hollywood

November 29, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

brokeback-mountainIt’s a decade since Brokeback Mountain became one of the most successful gay-themed movie ever at the box office, so it’s a good time for Jake Gyllenhaal to take a look back and consider whether things have improved for gay actors in Hollywood.

He recently told THR about the changes in gay rights over the last 10 years, “I think it is changing. And it’s pretty amazing how it’s changing. And one of the things that I’m so proud of [about] that movie, was to see, within the past basically 10 years, how much has changed. When the Supreme Court [issued a ruling] just a little while ago, I felt like we had been part, a little part and parcel of that movement. I was proud, you know? To me that’s really a pretty incredible moment. We had to wait a little while for it. But when will it be OK for an actor to be gay? I mean, it’s OK now.”

Of the decision to take the role of Jack Twist in Brokeback, he adds, “It’s one of the most beautiful scripts I’ve ever read and it was Ang Lee, and at the time Heath [Ledger] was a friend of mine — before we even shot the movie — and always sort of alluring to me. Heath was always somebody who I admired.  He was way beyond his years as a human, in a way. I wasn’t quite sure where he came from. I mean, I know he’s from Perth, but I wasn’t really quite sure where he came from and I think that’s the feeling most people got when they were around him and why he was so extraordinary. And when that opportunity came I was a young actor. I was like, “Yeah, I’m in.”  I know a lot has been made of the choice to do it, but it just didn’t seem like something that was scary to me. You know, it was binding, because sometimes a lot of that character is very specifically the more overtly gay character of the two.  The one who’s struggling with it less. And I didn’t really realize that.  And that was an interesting journey for me, giving into that idea. Being the one who tries to push the relationship.  And I think in a very simple way people would say, “Oh the sort of more female character.” I don’t even know what the hell that means, but I’ve been told that many times — you know, the one who wants the relationship or something. That was an interesting thing for me.”

LGBT-Themed Family Friendly Indie Comedy Zilla & Zoe Seeks Post-Production Funding

November 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zilla-and-zoeThe indie comedy Zilla & Zoe is already in the can, but in order get it finished it’s looking for some crowd-funded post-production cash. The movie has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise at least $20,000 (with match funding promised by outside backers).

So what’s it about? According to the Kickstarter, ‘Zoe, age 10, is obsessed with making horror films. A deadline for a big horror contest is coming up and Zoe is determined to win. But when her father, concerned about her increasingly gory activities, orders her to stop making horror films and shoot her sister’s wedding week instead, Zoe has no other choice…. To win the contest of her dreams, she will have to turn her sister’s wedding into a horror film.’

The wedding she’s planning to film is between two women, with the makers noting, ‘We were shocked that even in Portland, we were kicked out of a church and protested by anti-gay marriage activists during the shooting of Zilla And Zoe. This film’s theme of accepting ourselves and others for who we really are – whether that means little girls who want to play with monsters instead of Barbies, or people who want to marry the person they love, regardless of gender – is an important one. We believe that breaking through stereotypes and embracing one another for the differences that make us unique will result in a richer, more vibrant, happier and more creative world.’

Jessica Scalise wrote and directed the movie, which was filmed last summer in Portland, Oregon.

You can take a look at the fundraising video below, and if you’d like to help out, head over to Kickstarter.

Ryan Gosling Sought For Neil Armstrong Biopic, First Man

November 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ryan-goslingHollywood really will make a movie about anything. After all, what did Neil Armstrong ever do, other than be the first man on the moon? Ok, fair enough, maybe that is a good enough reason to make a movie about him.

Whiplash’s Damien Chazelle is planning to helm a movie based on James Hansen’s Armstrong biography First Man: A Life of Neil A. Armstrong, and he wants Ryan Gosling to star. Deadline reports that talks are taking place to the actor, but no deal has been struck yet.

The film would reunite Gosling and Chazelle, who’ve been working together recently on the upcoming La La Land.

Neil Armstrong was a aerospace engineer, naval aviator, test pilot who became NASA’s first civilian astronaut. Then, on his second and last trip into space he became the first man to walk on the moon. Afterwards he lived a far quieter life than he could have done, largely working as an educator and businessman. He died in 2012.

November 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

captain-america-civil-war-poster1-slideIt may have Captain America in the name, but Civil War is almost as much of an Avengers movie as Age Of Ultron. Only Thor and Hulk are missing – but they will both be in Thor: Ragnarok, so they haven’t been forgotten completely.

Now three posters and a first trailer for Captain America: Civil War are here.

Synopsis: ‘Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

‘The movie stars Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Emily VanCamp, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Frank Grillo, Tom Holland, with William Hurt and Daniel Brühl. Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” is directed by Anthony & Joe Russo and produced by Kevin Feige. Eroddity(s) 2 Trailer – The sexy, Twilight Zone style gay short film collection returns

November 24, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

erodditys-2-trailer-slideLast year Steven Vasquez’s collection of horror-flecked LGBT short films, Eroddity(s), was unleashed on the world, gaining a fair few fans who enjoyed its mix of risque eroticism and creepy strangeness.

Now it’s returning with Eroddity(s) 2, which offers another trio of weird and sexy stories.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Welcome back to the world of the odd, the erotic and the supernatural! This brand new sequel to the sensual, nudity-packed 2014 horror hit Eroddity(s) features three more bone-chilling (and boner-incuding) tales of terror! A Texas teen and wannabe actor knock them dead at The Audition. In The Private War of Joseph Sargent, two soldiers are on a secret mission in the jungles of South America. Once captured, their last night together will reveal dark secrets and create sexual tensions that will cause wide spread collateral damage. In The Caretaker of Cook County, a cemetery worker hides his recent disfigurement under the cloak of a sinister hood. Winning Dad Trailer – Can a gay son get the respect of his conservative father in a post-marriage equality world?

November 24, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

winning-dad-slideBack in 2013 we covered the Kickstarter campaign for the movie WInning Dad. Now the film is complete and heading for release very soon in the US exclusively through Vimeo-On-Demand. And to get you ready, we have the trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set in Seattle and its surrounding forests, “Winning Dad” tells the story of Colby, an out gay man whose conservative father only begrudgingly accepts his sexual orientation. This quiet denial of Colby’s lifestyle means his dad doesn’t know about his new serious love, Rusty. Colby is convinced that, given the chance, his father and his boyfriend will get along great. He just needs to find the right way for them to meet and bond…

‘In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to grant marriage rights to same sex couples, the movie explores how the narrative of the LGBT struggle in America is evolving. It tackles the lingering generational gap that divides the country’s attitudes on issues of LGBT equality, and also bridges the cultural divide embodied in today’s partisan politics.

‘The film takes the risk of allowing its audience to empathize with the homophobic father. Says Allen: “My experience on a testosterone-fueled ship made me want to tell a story where the homophobe gets a word in. Not because he is right, but because he has the right to say what he feels; if he doesn’t, he won’t grow out of it, he’ll only simmer quietly. ‘Winning Dad’ works in part because even the homophobic character earns your sympathy.”

‘”Winning Dad” tells a tale of generational misunderstanding in a whole new way: fresh, surprising, and moving, it employs a gentle touch to encourage everyone to embrace their own complexity and the complexity of others.’

Carol & Tangerine Lead LGBT-Themed Independent Spirit Awards Nominations

November 24, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

carol-cate-blanchett-rooney-maraThe Independent Spirit Awards Nominations have been released, and it’s not too surprising that leading the way is Todd Haynes lesbian-themed Carol lead the way with six nods. As many expect the films to make a good showing at the Oscar, it was also bound to do well with the US’s leading Indie gongs.

The movie, which reaches UK cinemas this Friday (November 27th), follows Cate Blanchett’s title character, a married woman who embarks on an affair with younger shop assistant Therese (Rooney Mara). Ever since its Cannes debut the movie has been winning huge amounts of praise, which continues here. You can read our review here.

Carol wasn’t the only LGBT-themed movie that did well, as the micro-budget Tangerine picked up four nomination, for Best Feature, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. It marks the first time a female trans woman has been nominated in the Best Actress category (Harmony Santana was the first trans nominee, in the Best Supporting Actress category in 2012).

Kitana Kiki Rodriguez is the one with the Best Actress nom, while the excellent Mya Taylor is honoured in the Best Supporting Actress category.

While earlier in the year it looked like other indie LGBT movies such as Freeheld and About Ray might get some awards love, lukewarm critical reaction and the fact they’ve been shut out from the Independent Spiritt Awards – the one place they’d get noms even if they were ignored elsewhere – suggests that won’t be happening.

Take a look below for the full list on Independent Spirit Award nominees: [Read more…]

Carol (Cinema Review)

November 24, 2015 By Mike Martin Leave a Comment

Starring: Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler
Director: Todd Haynes
Running Time: 118 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 27th 2015 (UK)

If Far From Heaven was Todd Haynes’ love letter to director Douglas Sirk, this is his tribute to painter Edward Hopper. Whatever the flaws of his film – more of which later – it is probably the best-looking movie of 2015. Meticulously reimagining the New York of the 1950s it has shot after shot of its protagonists exquisitely framed, gorgeously coloured and superbly dressed.

Several moments are worth pausing and gazing at for hours, especially one amazing shot of a grey, drab New York street lifted by the bright red coat and hat of the ethereal Cate Blanchett striding along. The interiors are gloomy, the exteriors washed out and tired-looking. Hopper would be impressed.

It received a standing ovation at Cannes and has been held back to coincide with Oscars season, during which it will probably clean up. However… [Read more…]

Tom Cruise In Talks To Star In The Mummy Reboot

November 24, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tom-cruiseUniversal has big plans for an interconnected monster movie universe, and in order to help kick it off properly it seems they want a big name in the hope it’ll drawn in the crowds. Variety reports that Tom Cruise is the man the studio wants, and it appears he’s interested as he’s not in talks to take the lead role.

If he does sign on, he’s likely to play a role in the projects development, with Jon Spaihts writing the script and Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan producing. The latter are in charge of building the Avengers-style monster universe, so they’ll need to make sure they get this one right.

Not too much is known about the plot, except it will of course involve the titular Mummy and will be set in the present day.

It’s expected in cinemas in 2017.
