In the past couple of years there’s been a move towards gay-themed films not being about the experience of being gay itself, instead having it as a theme that is intrinsic but not the be-all-and-end-all. However trans-themed film – or at least the ones that seem to get into LGBT festivals – still have a tendency to make being a trans person the main subject. The short film Roxanne (which perhaps surprisingly was partly brought to the screen with the support of Absolut vodka!) doesn’t do this, instead coming at things somewhat more sideways, with a tale of two people who don’t quite fit in. After District 9 there was huge amounts of excitement around director Neill Blomkamp, but Elysium disappointed and while Chappie is a bit of an improvement, it still has some problems.
Set a few years into the future, Johannesburg has become the first city in the world to deploy a robotic police force, with squadrons of humanoid ‘scouts’ keeping the peace and ensuring the criminals don’t get the upper hand. Deon (Dev Patel), who is one of the programmers behind the droids, thinks he’s worked out how to take things further – by giving a robot true human consciousness – but the company he works for aren’t interested. Before Focus went in front of the cameras there was huge amount of interest in it in Hollywood, with the likes of Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Ben Affleck and Kristen Stewart all being attached at one time or another. However, in the end it went to Will Smith and Margot Robbie as the two leads.
After watching it, I kind of wondered why so many people were so keen on it, as while fairly fun and decently entertaining, there’s very little to set it appear from a hundred other con-artist thrillers. [Read more…]
Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 Character Posters Put On Their War Paint
We’ve still got a few months to wait until The Hunger Games movies come to an end with Mockingjay Part 2, but a set of character posters have emerged, with the warriors of District 13 putting on their war paint.
Here’s the synopsis: ‘With the nation of Panem in a full scale war, Katniss confronts President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in the final showdown. Teamed with a group of her closest friends – including Gale (Liam Hemsworth), Finnick (Sam Claflin), and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) – Katniss goes off on a mission with the unit from District 13 as they risk their lives to stage an assassination attempt on President Snow who has become increasingly obsessed with destroying her. The mortal traps, enemies, and moral choices that await Katniss will challenge her more than any arena she faced in The Hunger Games.’
Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 is released in UK cinemas on 19th November 2015.

Actor Matt Dallas Has Married His Boyfriend, Blue Valentine
Ever since Kyle XY, there have been plenty of people all around the world swooning over the handsomeness that is Matt Dallas. However we’re got bad news for all those folks, as he’s off the market.
Matt has revealed on Instagram that he has married his fiance, LA musician Blue Hamilton.
The two have been engaged since Christmas 2012 (it was while mentioning his new fiance on Instagram in January 2013 that Matt casually came out publicly), but it seems they’ve now officially tied the knot, with Matt posting a pic of him and Blue outside the courthouse apparently holding their marriage license, along with the message, ‘Introducing Mr. & Mr. Dallas‘. Blue meanwhile posted the same pic except his message was, ‘Introducing Mr. & Mr. Hamilton‘.
Hopefully that’s not a sign that they already arguing over what surnames they should use (only joking).
They certainly make a cute couple and we wish them huge amounts of luck!
Gay Short Film Showcase: Pink Moon – Into a world where gays are in charge & straights ostracised
We’ve been following Pink Moon for a while, including its February 2014 crowdfunding campaign and the release of the trailer a couple of months ago. Well now, rather than keeping the film under wraps only for those who manage to see it at film festivals or screening, the short movie has been released online for us all to see.
The film, about ‘LGBTQ and Reproductive Rights’, is set ‘In a society where heterosexuals are persecuted and abortion is forbidden, two teens are forced to hide an unplanned pregnancy before their secret romance is exposed.’
Director Sal Bardo has a great history of releasing his shorts online for the world to view, as we’ve previously featured the likes of the excellent Chaser and Sam. You can watch Pink Moon below, which may become a feature-length movie in the near future..
On his latest film, Bardo commented to Interview magazine, “There’s an all-out assault on reproductive rights in this country, and the same thing is happening with LGBT rights. Both of those issues are about personal freedom, and they’re fundamentally connected.”

Stuff Trailer – A lesbian couple struggles to keep their relationship on track
It’s just a few days until one the world’s biggest LGBT film festivals, LA’s Outfest, kicks off, and one of the movies that will be screening this year is Suzanne Guacci’s stuff.
Ahead of that premiere, the trailer has arrived and you can watch it below.
Here’s the synopsis: ‘Stuff stars Yvonne Jung (“Third Watch”), Karen Sillas (What Happened Was…), Traci Dinwiddie (Elena Undone), Phyllis Somerville (“The Big C”) and Kevin Brown (“30 Rock”). Guacci directs her cast through a relatable and heart wrenching story of a couple that has lost sight of each other amid their day to day lives. With honest emotions and no clear villains or answers, Stuff explores how a relationship can get off track and the struggle to navigate the trials that life throws at us.’

New Pics Emerge Of Jeremy Irvine & Co. In Roland Emmerich’s Stonewall Movie
Roland Emmerich normally spends his time destroying as much of the world as possible in the likes of The Day After Tomorrow and 2012 (he’s currently shooting the sequel to Independence Day), but for his next film he’s looking at a conflict that took place on a slightly smaller scale but had massive ramifications in th years afterwards – the 1969 Stonewall riots.
Over the past couple of weeks the film’s Facebook page has released quite a few new images to go with the first one that arrived in March, giving us our best look at the movie yet.
Here’s the synopsis: ‘Less than 50 years ago, in 1969, being gay was considered a mental illness. Gay people could not be employed by the government. It was illegal for gay people to congregate, and police brutality against gays went unchecked.
‘STONEWALL is a drama about a fictional young man caught up during the 1969 Stonewall Riots. Danny Winters (Jeremy Irvine) is forced to leave behind friends and loved ones when he is kicked out of his parent’s home and flees to New York. Alone in Greenwich Village, homeless and destitute, he befriends a group of street kids who soon introduce him to the local watering hole The Stonewall Inn; however, this shady, mafia-run club is far from a safe-haven. As Danny and his friends experience discrimination, endure atrocities and are repeatedly harassed by the police, we see a rage begin to build. This emotion runs through Danny and the entire community of young gays, lesbians and drag queens who populate the Stonewall Inn and erupts in a storm of anger. With the toss of a single brick, a riot ensues and a crusade for equality is born.’
The movie is due in cinemas later this year. You can take a look at the new pics below, which interestingly includes the recreation of the 1970 Christopher Street Gay Liberation march. Christopher Street is the road that the Stonewall Inn was on, and after the riot Christopher Street days and marches began popping up in all sorts of cities, which was the starts of the May/June ‘Pride Season’ that we know today.
Heath Ledger’s Homophobic Gay Uncle Inspired His Brokeback Mountain Character
Heath Ledger is probably best remembered as The Joker in The Dark Knight and as Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain. It’s 10 years since the latter movie debuted, and as part of their marriage equality special, Variety caught up with director Ang Lee and producer/writer James Schamus, to talk about the movie.
Perhaps the most interesting info to come from the chat, is what inspired Ledger’s performance as the quiet, completely closeted Ennis. Ang Lee says, “Heath came in and wanted to do it right away. He told me that he learned from one of his uncles, who is also a very macho, homophobic gay, much like Ennis, and also a rancher.”
Anne Hathaway meanwhile apparently auditioned while in costume for The Princess Diaries 2 – a far cry from the Midwest character she ultimately ended up playing in Brokeback.
Lee also talked about the difficulty he had shooting the sex scenes, saying, “I was pretty shy shooting sex scenes, so I designed a very complicated one-shot deal, with 13 points of focus. I made it technical so that no one would think about anything else except hitting their marks. Once we got past the first take, nobody was shy anymore. We tried to make it as real and compelling as possible, and they were very professional. Getting into the first take was hard, and it was the 13th take that I ended up using, which was the last take.”
It’s well worth reading the whole chat, which includes the fact Lee never thought it would be a big success. He comments, “I also thought it would be an arthouse film with a very small audience. I was nervous about the subject matter hitting the shopping mall, and I was surprised at its success. I think it has something to do with the fact that it’s a poignant love story.”

Although there’s a little more divserdity in gay-themed movies than there used to be, there’s still a predominance of films about young, skinny, pretty boys, most of whom don’t know what body hair is. However for the last few years there’s been BearCity, with the 2010 movie and its 2012 sequel giving space to slightly older, burlier and definitely hairier men living in the bear subculture.
Now BearCity 3 is in the works and to get it made an Indiegogo campaign has been launched which is looking for an ambitious $250,000 to get the film in the can.
There’s not too much info on the plot, but the makers promise, “We have a great script for the third and final installment. Bear nekked camping, a baby on the way… and of course, hot Bears. This will be the most fun, exciting and inspiring of the trilogy. You’ll get to know, respect and love our gang even more than already do. We are pulling out all the stops… but we can’t do it without YOU!”
