New Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer – Hans Solo and Luke Skywalker are back

April 16, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

star-wars-the-force-awakens-trailer2The first teaser for Star Wars: The Force Awakens very deliberately avoiding showing us any of the classic Star Wars characters, despite the fact he knew the likes of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher would be returning.

However for the new trailer they’ve realised that while it’s nice to see some new characters, fans also want to know things haven’t changed that much, whether it’s the look of the film doing a great job of aping previous instalments, Luke Skywalker’s voice and arm, or the big reveal at the end with Han Solo and Chewbacca.

The new trailer was launched new at today’s The Force Awakens panel at Star Wars Celebration – the Ultimate Star Wars fan experience. Fans in the U.K who were unable to attend Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California attended a live local London event hosted by Star Wars star Warwick Davis at the Empire Cinema in Leicester Square.

Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

GLAAD Reports Little Progress In Hollywood LGBT Representation In Its Annual Survey

April 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tammy-slideWe could almost cut and paste the story we wrote last year about GLAAD’s annual Studio Responsibility Index, as the 2015 edition suggests that despite great strides being made on TV, in Hollywood films LGBT representation has barely changed at all.

Of the 114 film released by the studios and their specialist divisions in 2014, only 20 of them, or 17.5 percent, included characters GLAAD identified as lesbian, gay or bisexual, which was only marginally up from the 16.7% in 2013.

Of the films that did include lesbian, gay or bisexual people, the vast majority were minor characters, with half of them on screen for less than five minutes. They even found that with some of these LGB characters, you’d only know they weren’t straight if you were aware of the sexuality of the person they were based on or read outside reports, as the film itself didn’t mention that fact. They also noted that “most of the inclusive films (65%) featured gay male characters. Less than a third (30%) featured bisexual characters, and about one tenth (10%) featured lesbian characters”.

Once more most of these LGB characters were featured in comedies, with hardly any genre movies (such as action, sci-fi and fantasy movies) being inclusive.

As in 2014, no major movies at all featured transgender characters, although on a vaguely positive note, they noted “fewer overtly defamatory depictions in mainstream film compared to last year, though offensive representations were by no means absent, and were found in films such as Exodus: Gods and Kings and Horrible Bosses 2.”

GLAAD has once more given each studio a grade, and like in 2014 two of them have been judged to be failing. Showing just how little consistency there is, after being given a ‘good’ grade last year, Sony is judged to be failing this year, while Disney, often regarded as one of the more gay-friendly American companies, is also given a failing grade. The House Of Mouse only managed one film that GLAAD (very generously) considered LGBT-inclusive, and that was only because of a blink and you’ll miss it cameo by bisexual star Lady Gaga.

Only Warner Bros. was judged as good, with Fox, Lionsgate, Paramount and Universal all seen as adequate.

The film that was given the most praise by GLAAD was Melissa McCarthy’s Tammy, which was judged to be the only studio film “to feature major characters who are openly and unashamedly depicted as LGBT and cast in a positive light.” The organisation was also keen to pour scorn on Jennifer Aniston’s bisexual character Dr. Julia Harris in Horrible Bosses 2, noting she showed, “some of the worst stereotypes about bisexual people.” Both movies were released by divisions of Warner Brothers, showing just how inconsistent things are, especially considering that was the only studio given a ‘good’ grade.

In GLAAD’s Vito Russo Test, which looks for films with at least one identifiably LGBT character, who is defined by more than just his or her sexual orientation or gender identity, and has a significant role in the plot. Out of the 114 movies of all descriptions, only 11 could manage to fulfil all three of those simple criteria.

GLAAD’s president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis comments, “As television and streaming services continue to produce a remarkable breadth of diverse LGBT representations, we still struggle to find depictions anywhere near as authentic or meaningful in mainstream Hollywood film. The industry continues to look increasingly out of touch by comparison, and still doesn’t represent the full diversity of the American cultural fabric.”

Ellis also notes the complete inconsistency in the studios’ approach, marking that while Warner was given a good grade for its 2014 releases, “They also recently released the comedy Get Hard, one of the most problematic films we have seen in some time. This glaring lack of consistency seems to be common amongst almost every major film studio, showing a need for greater oversight in how their films represent – or don’t represent – significant portions of their audience. Only when they make those changes and catch up to other, more consistently inclusive media portrayals will we be able to say that America’s film industry is a full partner in accelerating acceptance.”

Adam Rodriguez Gets His Shirtless Magic Mike XXL Character Banner

April 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

magic-mike-xxl-adam-rodriguez-character-bannerA couple of days ago Channing Tatum got his dance on in a Magic Mike character banner. Now it seems that was the first of many as today it’s Adam Rodriguez’s turn to show that he’s going back into the world of strippers, as he’s got his own poster too, which you can see above.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘“Magic Mike” stars Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez and Gabriel Iglesias are reuniting for the hotly anticipated sequel “Magic Mike XXL”. Joining the returning cast, in brand new roles, will be Elizabeth Banks (“The Hunger Games” franchise), Donald Glover (“Community”), Amber Heard (“The Rum Diary”), Andie MacDowell (“Footloose”), Jada Pinkett Smith (“Gotham”) and Michael Strahan (“Live with Kelly and Michael”).

‘The new film will be directed and produced by Emmy Award winner Gregory Jacobs (“Behind the Candelabra”), who served as a producer on “Magic Mike,” as well as numerous features in a long-running collaboration with Steven Soderbergh. “Magic Mike XXL” also reunites “Magic Mike” producers Nick Wechsler, Channing Tatum and Reid Carolin, with a screenplay by Carolin. Steven Soderbergh, who directed the first film, will executive produce.

‘Picking up the story three years after Mike bowed out of the stripper life at the top of his game, “Magic Mike XXL” finds the remaining Kings of Tampa likewise ready to throw in the towel. But they want to do it their way: burning down the house in one last blow-out performance in Myrtle Beach, and with legendary headliner Magic Mike sharing the spotlight with them. On the road to their final show, with whistle stops in Jacksonville and Savannah to renew old acquaintances and make new friends, Mike and the guys learn some new moves and shake off the past in surprising ways.’

Magic Mike XXL is due out July 3rd.

Suffragette Teaser Trailer – Carey Mulligan & Meryl Streep want women to vote

April 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

suffragette-pic1With the UK going to the polls for a General Election on May 7th, Pathe Pictures has decided it’s the perfect time to release a teaser for the movie Suffragette. It’s been put out in support of the #votingmatters campaign, which highlights things such as the fact that more than 9 million women failed to vote in the 2010 election, and so there is a major campaign to get women to register to vote before the deadline on 20 April.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The film stars Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Brendan Gleeson, Anne-Marie Duff, Ben Whishaw and Meryl Streep. The film is directed by Sarah Gavron, who reteams with her Brick Lane screenwriter Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady), and is produced by Faye Ward and Alison Owen (Saving Mr Banks).

‘SUFFRAGETTE is an intense drama that tracks the story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement as they fought for the right to vote, women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State. These women were not primarily from the genteel educated classes, they were working women who had seen peaceful protest achieve nothing. Radicalised and turning to violence as the only route to change, they were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality – their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives. The character of Maud, played by Carey Mulligan, is one such foot soldier. The story of her fight for dignity is both heart-breaking and inspirational.’

The movie hits British cinemas on October 30th. [Read more…]

Matthew Vaughn May Helm A New Flash Gordon Movie

April 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matthew-vaughnMatthew Vaughn has been fully immersed in the world of comic books for the past few years with the likes of Kick Ass, Kingsman, and X-Men: First Class. Now he may being staying in that milieu but getting a bit more classic as THR reports he’s in talks to direct a new live-action Flash Gordon movie.

Alex Raymond created Flash in 1934 in response to the success of Buck Rogers. The comic strip follows the eponymous hero who gets stranded on the planet Mongo alongside lady friend Dale Arden due to the actions of Dr. Hans Zarkov. There he gets caught up in the battle against the planet’s ruthless tyrant, Ming The Merciless.

The plan for the new film is to make something fun but less camp than the cult 1980 movie, which mixed a Queen soundtrack with an edge of cheesiness to entertaining but rather bizarre effect. J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay (Star Trek 3) are writing the script, based on a treatment by the Bourne movie’s George Nolfi.

It’s not clear when we might see the film, but with Vaughn behind the camera it’d be one to watch out for.

Emma Stone & Ryan Gosling May Reunite & Gets Musical For La La Land

April 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

emma-stone-ryan-goslingIt seems Ryan Gosling’s self-imposed acting hiatus is over as just a few days after it was reported he’s in talks for Guillermo Del Toro’s Haunted Mansion, Deadline says that he may be re-teaming with his Crazy Stupid Love and Gangster Squad co-star Emma Stone for La La Land.

If he does it’ll be a chance for him to show off his singing skills (he is, after all, a former Mousketeer who nearly ended up in N*Sync), as it’s a musical from Whiplash director Damien Chazelle.

The film has been described as ‘an old fashioned musical set in contemporary Los Angeles and centers on a love story between a jazz pianist and an aspiring actress.’ Their passion is tested by the extremes of living in a city of creativity and dreams.

Neither Stone nor Gosling has signed on as yet, but both are said to be circling the project. There’s also been talk of Eddie Redmayne taking the male lead, but it appears Gosling is more likely at the moment.

Gay Short Film Showcase: Trunks – Can a swimming pool make you feel gay?

April 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

trunks-short-filmThe multi-award winning 2011 LGBT-themed short Trunks is based on an odd but intriguing idea, where a man feels straight when he’s on land, but gay when he’s in the local swimming pool. But will he tell his ex-girlfriend the whole truth?

The film won Best Short Film at the Northern Nights Film Festival, London; Best Experimental Film at the Limelight Awards 2012; and Best Screenplay at the Van d’Or Independent Film Awards 2012, so it’s certainly had some love.

You can take a look at it below (and as director David Hewitt points out on the video’s Vimeo page, it’s never made any money – gay short films rarely do, no matter how good they are – so if you want to tip him, you can do it there).

Jaden Smith Says It Doesn’t Matter What You Wear, They’re All Clothes

April 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

jaden-smithKarate Kid and After Earth star Jaden Smith may only be 16-years-old but he’s keen to show that he has little time for the sort of gender norms that many less enlightened people seem to be are immutable part of the universe.

He’s been spotted several times wearing skirts and dresses and other so-called ‘female’ clothing. After tabloids wrote stories about this fact, he wrote a Tweet which suggests he has little time for such thinking, saying, “Went to TopShop to Buy Some Girl Clothes, I Mean ‘Clothes.'”

He also shared that he had a situation where, ‘That Moment When Your Wearing A Dress With No Pants And You Swerve Way To Hard.’

If you look up the pics you’ll see that it’s a pretty good look for him, and he’s right, it does look like he’s just creating his own style rather than him specifically wearing ‘women’s’ clothes or making a statement/looking for publicity (he’s previously spoken of his dislike of celebs who wear things just to try and get attention).

Inevitably Jaden’s style has had some commentators frothing at the mouth, with some people unable to realise that most types of clothing have been favoured by one gender or another at different points in time. However most people have been extremely supportive of both what Jaden wears and his attitude to it. [Read more…]

Chevy Chase Is Joined By Ed Helms In The First Pics From The Vacation Reboot

April 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

vacation-pic1It’s been a while since we had a Vacation movie. There were four between 1983 and 1997, and then in 2010 came Hotel Hell Vacation, although the less said about that the better. However now the series is returning from straight-to-DVD hell for a full-on reboot, with Chevy Chase and Beverly Beverly D’Angelo returning as Clark and Ellen Griswold.

However the focus now is on the their fully grown son Rusty (now played by Ed Helms), who has a family of his own that are all ready to get into all manner of holiday chaos.

With a July release set the first images from the movie have now arrived, which you can see above and below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The next generation of Griswolds is at it again—and on the road for another ill-fated adventure. Following in his father’s footsteps and hoping for some much-needed family bonding, a grown-up Rusty Griswold (Ed Helms) surprises his wife, Debbie (Christina Applegate), and their two sons with a cross-country trip back to America’s “favorite family fun park,” Walley World.’
