Keanu Reeves & Christina Hendricks On For Nicolas Winding Refn’s Neon Demon

February 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

keanu-reevesThe cast for Nicolas Winding Refn’s upcoming horror tale Neon Demon is coming together. He recently added Elle Fanning and Abbey Lee, and now Variety reports that it’s been revealed at the Berlin Film Festival, that Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendricks, Jena Malone and Bella Heathcote will also star.

Unfortunately though the announcement of new cast members didn’t come with many details about the plot or the characters anyone will play. All that’s known is that it’s a female-driven horror tale set in Los Angeles.

The movie will start shooting March 30th in LA and should hit cinemas in 2016. That’s all the details we know, but hopefully Refn – the man behind Drive, Bronson and Only God Forgives – has something interesting up his sleeve.

Gay Short Film Showcase: We Are Animals – An alternate history takes us into a police state panic over HIV

February 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

we-are-animals-short-filmUntil recently when watching the gay-themed short film We Are Animals, it would be easy to say, ‘well, that would never happen’, but considering the panic and virtual house arrest imposed on those potentially exposed to Ebola recently, it’s perhaps not as extreme as it might initially seem.

The short takes us into an alternate version of the mid-1980s, where panic over HIV and AIDS has caused chaos and an authoritarian regime to be imposed, where gay and HIV+ positive people are being quarantined, locked up and forcibly castrated. However one young man has to face his own truth after becoming involved in a breakout.

The short gave its name to last year’s gay short film collection, Boys On Film 11: We Are Animals, and at the time we said, ‘We Are Animals is an angry, intense, intriguing and pretty dark film. It’s also very challenging, leaving you to wonder if either side of the argument is completely right or completely wrong, or if intolerance and rhetoric has pushed both sides far further than ought to be justified. It’s a poem to the resolutely queer who will not pass in ways that heteros deem acceptable. However it doesn’t give them a free pass, asking the audience to question what’s going on.’

You can watch the full 13-minute film below. If you know a short film we ought to be posting, tell us by getting in touch via our contact page. And check out more gay short films and web series here. [Read more…]

BoysTown Webseries Episode 1 – The gay-themed TV show heads online for us all to see

February 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

boystown-episode1Getting gay-themed entertainment to the public can be a difficult thing and results in some odd idiosyncracies. For example, viewers of OUTtv in Canada, Belgium, The Netherlands & Sweden have been able to enjoy the show BoysTown on television.

However, despite that fact it’s made in the US it’s never aired there, and likewise us Brits are severely lacking in any gay focussed TV networks – despite there being a satellite channel for pretty much everything else – so we haven’t seen it either.

It’s great then that the maker of the show, Reidling Entertainment, has decided to turn it into a web series so that everyone around the world can take a look. While based on the show that aired on TV, it’s been re-edited to give a ‘different twist’, with each episode providing a different outlook on the series and may include unreleased footage.

Creator Ricky Ricky Reidling describes BoysTown as ‘a cross between a gay Desperate Housewives and Sex & the City about 8 men living there lives in Los Angeles where they are always getting themselves into situations that they have a hard time getting out of’. Hunter Ackerman, Jesse Seann Atkinson, Eric Dean, Albertossy Espinoza, Chace Farguson, Jim Patneaude, Ricky Reidling & Peter Welkin star.

The first episode of the web version of the show has now been released, with more coming each Friday over the coming weeks. Take a look at Ep. 1 below. [Read more…]

Jimmy Fallon Reunites The Saved By The Bell Cast & Takes Them Back To Bayside High

February 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

saved-by-the-bell-reunionIt’s starting to make me feel really old that we’ve already reached the point where we can have nostalgia for the 1990s, but there’s no doubt that it’s good to see the cast of Saved By The Bell reuniting on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, and heading back to Bayside High – complete with colourful 90s outfits – for a fun skit.

Well, most of the cast are there, as there’s the noticeable absence of Dustin Diamond’s Screech. However we presume Diamond would have preferred to be on The Tonight Show than facing charges for felony reckless endangerment and two misdemeanours following an incident at Christmas where he’s alleged to have stabbed someone.

But even without him, it’s good to see Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Mario Lopez, Elizabeth Berkley, Tiffani Thiessen and even Dennis Haskins’ Mr. Belding. Sadly Lark Voorhies isn’t there either, but other than that it’s a great trip back in time, so take a look below. [Read more…]

First Clip Of Ian McKellen As An Aged Sherlock In Mr. Holmes Is Here

February 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mr-holmes-ian-mckellanMr. Holmes is certainly an intriguing idea, with Ian McKellen starring as an older Sherlock Holmes just after the Second World War, a long time after Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories about him ended.

Way back last July the first image from the movie was released, but now we’ve got the first clip showing McKellen in action, which you can watch below.

Mr. Holmes is based on Mitch Culin’s novel A Slight Trick Of The Mind. Here’s the synopsis: ‘England in 1947. The famous detective Sherlock Holmes, now 93 years old, lives in his Sussex country house. When he goes to the cinema and sees a film about himself, he mostly shakes his head. For much of what he is purported to have done in the heroic stories has simply been made up. He never wore the legendary hat and, rather than the pipe, he always preferred a cigarette. Long since retired, he steers clear of people and dedicates himself chiefly to bee-keeping. The only people he suffers to be around him are housekeeper Mrs Munro and her small son Roger, whom Holmes is initiating into the secrets of apiculture. But sometimes his thoughts are beset by old cases. What really went on with the mysterious Ann Kelmot, whom he shadowed at her husband’s behest? And what connects him to the Umezaki family, who have invited him to Japan? Holmes undertakes one final big journey, experiences a botanical miracle and resolves to tell a compassionate lie …’

Bill Condon directs. Expect to see in in cinemas later this year. [Read more…]

New Fast & Furious 7 Trailer – Vin Diesel & Paul Walker defy physics

February 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fast-and-furious-7-pic2When we posted the Fast & Furious 7 Super Bowl spot, we commented that the action had reached the level of absolute fantasy. Indeed some shots looked like they were taking place in The Matrix. Now a new trailer has arrived which backs that up, with plenty more explosions and chases that completely ignore the laws of physics.

It’s all pretty spectacular though.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Continuing the global exploits in the unstoppable franchise built on speed, Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson lead the returning cast of Fast & Furious 7. James Wan directs this chapter of the hugely successful series that also welcomes back favorites Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Elsa Pataky and Lucas Black. They are joined by international action stars new to the franchise including Jason Statham, Djimon Hounsou, Tony Jaa, Ronda Rousey and Kurt Russell. Neal H. Moritz, Vin Diesel and Michael Fottrell return to produce the film written by Chris Morgan.’

It’s out in the UK April 3rd. [Read more…]

Zachary Quinto & Melissa Leo Up For Oliver Stone’s Edward Snowden Biopic

February 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zachary-quintoOliver Stone is pulling his Edward Snowden biopic together. He’s already got Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the lead role, with Shailene Woodley as his girlfriend and Scott Eastwood also set to star. Now three more people are in talks, according to TheWrap.

Zachary Quinto, Melissa Leo and Tom Wilkinson are all in negotiations for key roles. Quinto will be attorney and journalist Glenn Greenwald, who Snowden entrusted with actually leaking the secret US government documents that caused a firestorm when they were released.

Melissa Leo will play Oscar-nominated documentary director Laura Poitras, who made Citizenfour about Snowden and also reported on the leaked NSA documents when they were first released.

Wilkinson meanwhile will play Guardian intelligence correspondent Ewen MacAskill, who was key in actually getting to documents checked and the information they contained to the public.

Oliver Stone will direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with Kieran Fitzgerald (The Homesman). It’s believed it will start shooting soon.

First Look Poltergeist Remake Pics Emerge

February 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Poltergeist-2015-pic5While some still aren’t sure whether Poltergeist ought to be remade – as they treat the original as sacrosanct – it’s too late now as the film is in the can and on its way. Now we can take our first look as we’ve got five images from the do-over.

Hopefully we’ll also be posting the trailer later today.

The movie follow Eric and Amy Bowen (Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt), who move into a suburban home with their 8-year-old daughter Madison (Kennedi Clements). As you’d expect, there are some supernatural entities that don’t want them there and end up abducting Madison. Jared Harris plays the supernatural researcher brought in to help.

The film is described as a contemporary update of the original, with producer Sam Raimi commenting, “The original film commented on how we’ve let television get out of control, babysitting our kids. It’s only gotten worse with the handheld portable devices. Screens are everywhere.”

The movie will be out this summer. Take a look at the first pics above and below. [Read more…]

Peter Dinklage Joins Melissa McCarthy In The Comedy Michelle Darnell

February 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

peter-dinklageAfter several seasons of Game Of Thrones intrigue and skulduggery, as well as inventing the Sentinels in X-Men: Days Of Future Past, Peter Dinklage is heading for something a little different as he’s signed up to star in Michelle Darnell, opposite Melissa McCarthy, according to Variety.

McCarthy also co-wrote she script alongside Steve Mallory and her hubby Ben Falcone (who will also direct), which ‘follows a titan of industry who is sent to prison after she’s caught for insider trading. When she emerges ready to rebrand herself as America’s latest sweetheart, not everyone she screwed over is so quick to forgive and forget.’

There are no precise details about Dinklage’s character, but it appears he’ll play the main antagonist. There was a wide variety of stars considered for the role, including Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm and even Oprah Winfrey, but they eventually went with Dinklage after deciding he’d be best to steal his scenes and chew the scenery.

The film will shoot this summer for release April 2016.

BBC Releases First Pic From Upcoming Transgender-Themed Sitcom Boy Meets Girl

February 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

boy-meets-girls-tv-showAmazon’s Transparent has gained huge amounts of acclaim since it was first released, but what the transgender-themed show forgot was to have any major characters played by trans* actors. The BBC isn’t going to make that mistake as it’s commissioned Boy Meets Girl, which has just started shooting, and stars trans* actress Rebecca Root in one of the two central roles.

It’s her first major role and a bit of a change of pace, as Root has previously spent much of her time as a voice coach working with other trans* people.

To mark the start of filming the first image has been released, which you can see above.

The show came about after the BBC launched a talent search to create more shows based around trans* people. Boy Meets Girls was created Trans Comedy Award winner Elliott Kerrigan, alongside Simon Carlyle and Andrew Mettam.

As well as Root, the series stars Harry Hepple as the ‘boy’ of the title, as well as the likes of Denise Welch, Janine Duvitski, Nigel Betts, Lizzie Roper and Jonny Dixon.

Boy Meets Girl has been compared to Gavin & Stacey, focussing on the developing relationship between Leo and Judy. However this isn’t a show that’s only about the issue trans* face in the dating world, as there’s also a mini May-December thing going one as Leo is 26 and Judy is 40, along with plenty of other things to negotiate.

BBC Commissioning Editor Kristian Smith comments: “Boy Meets Girl is a heart-warming romantic comedy that draws on the glorious differences that shape all of us. It’s a brilliant thing to be able to support comedy that is not only funny, but can also promote affirming messages of humanity and acceptance.”

The show will premiere on BBC2 in the UK later this year.
