Jennifer Lawrence Is Going On The Dive With Hunger Games Director Francis Lawrence

January 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jennifer-lawrenceJennifer Lawrence must have enjoyed working with Francis Lawrence on the Hunger Games sequels, as she’s now onboard for his new movie, which also has James Cameron attached to produce.

TheWrap says that Lawrence will Audrey Mestre in the free diving biopic, ‘who died during an attempt to beat her own world record of 557.7 feet. (Francisco) Ferraras paid tribute to his late wife by diving to the same depth in an attempt that was filmed by Cameron.’

Cameron has been eyeing a biopic of Mestre for some time and even flirted with directing it himself. However he’s now passed the reins to Lawrence, although it’s not clear when it will shoot.

Appropriate Behaviour Trailer – A bisexual Iranian-American searches for her identity

January 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

appropriate-behavour-slideShirin storms out of the apartment of her girlfriend Maxine after a breakup, and proceeds to look back through her history of failed relationships. She moves in with pretentious artists, gets a job teaching filmmaking to five-years-olds, and employs a series of ill-advised schemes in an effort to win back Maxine.

Writer/director Desiree Akhavan, best known for her cult web series The Slope, stars in this story of a bisexual Iranian-American woman trying to find her way in modern-day Brooklyn. Appropriate Behaviour is an intelligent, engaging comedy that heralds an exciting new voice in indie cinema (with Akhavan soon to be seen in the next season of Lena Dunham’s Girls).

Peccadillo Pictures will release Appropriate Behaviour in UK & Irish cinemas from 6th March, 2015. [Read more…]

Did The Gay Secrets Behind Testament Of Youth Lead To A Young Man’s Tragic Death?

January 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac 5 Comments

taron-egerton-testament-of-youthThe new film version of Vera Brittain’s classic First World War memoir Testament Of Youth arrives in UK cinemas on January 16th. It tells the true story of Brittain and three young men during the war, showing both how Vera’s experiences as a nurse changed her and how the carnage of war decimated an entire generation of young men.

However while it is a true story, it may not be the whole truth – as it could be missing how the fate of one of the young men who is central to the story, might have been tied to his sexuality. To be fair, the movie is actually more upfront than the book, as while Brittain’s tome has extremely vague allusions that her brother, Edward (played by Taron Egerton), had ‘difficulty’ with women, the film is a little more explicit on what that difficulty might have been.

There may have been much more to the story though, as Vera Brittain biographer Mark Bostridge believes that Edward had several affairs with men and the discovery of this may have led to his death. The official account, as recounted in Testament Of Youth, is that Edward was killed by a sniper – the only officer who died in a June 1918 attack against Austrian forces on the plateau of Asiago in the Italian Alps. The Oscar Nominations Are Here, With Imitation Game Leading The LGBT Charge!

January 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

oscars-neil-patrick-harrisThe race is on! The Oscar nominations have been announced, so we now know the people and movies that will be vying for a win when the gongs are handed out February 22nd at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

As expected it’s a relatively open field, with no films looking like it’s going to sweep the board, but quite a few now teed up to go for Oscar glory. As expected there was a good showing for both Birdman and Boyhood. However there are others who’ve done well too, including The Imitation Game, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Theory Of Everything and American Sniper.

All of those movie showed up in the Best Picture race, which also includes Selma and Whiplash. Likewise they dominated the Best Director race, with only Theory Of Everything’s James Marsh and Oscar fave Clint Eastwood (American Sniper) missing out on nominations.

In the Best Actor race there were no surprises – indeed it was exactly as most predicted – with Steve Carell (Foxcatcher), Bradley Cooper (American Sniper), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game), Michael Keaton (Birdman) and Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything). It’s a slightly more unpredictable race in the Best Actress race, with Marion Cotillard (Two Days, One Night), Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Julianne Moore (Still Alice), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), and Reese Witherspoon (Wild).

It’s a rather mixed picture for LGBT movies, as while The Imitation Game’s eight nominations is undoubtedly good, that’s pretty much it, especially amongst the major categories. There had previously been high hopes for some gay-themed movies in both the Best Documentary and Best Foreign Language Film categories, but in the end none of them made the cut. And with Imitation Game not expected to win any major awards, it could be a bit of a gay drought. Well, sort of, as with Neil Patrick Harris presenting, we won’t be completely forgotten.

It’s a particular shame that Pride got nothing, as with the right marketing the movie should have had a good showing amongst the nominations, as it’s undoubtedly one of the best movies released in the past 12 months. Unfortunately it got absolutely nothing.

But then, it wasn’t the only way the Academy showed they were morons this morning, as they missed the awesome Lego Movie off the Best Animated Movie list, while including the far inferior (but still decent) Big Hero Six. If that wasn’t evidence they’re not very good at this nominating business, I don’t know what is.

You can take a look at the full list of nominees below: [Read more…]

Tom Cruise & Doug Liman Reuniting For Drugs Tale Mena

January 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

edge-of-tomorrow-slideIf you watch the special features on the Edge Of Tomorrow Blu-ray, it’s clear Tom Cruise and Doug Liman made a good team, with Liman concentrating on the look, feel and storytelling, while Cruise was very hands on with preparing the shoot and actors.

It seems they want to keep that team going, as THR reports they’re set to reteam for Mena, with Liman taking over from the previously attached Ron Howard on the project.

Universal bought Barry Spinelli’s script last year for over a million dollars, with is about ‘Barry Seal, a fired TWA pilot who became a major drug smuggler for the Medellin Cartel. He was later recruited by the DEA and CIA to provide intelligence, with his work tying to the Iran Contra scandal. He was assassinated by Colombians in 1986.’

It’s not clear when it will shoot, but when it does it will also reunite Liman with Universal for the first time since The Bourne Identity.

Charlie Hunnam May Become An American Drug Lord

January 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

charlie-hunnam-slideIf all had gone to the original plan, Charlie Hunnam would have been in cinemas next month doing naughty things in Fifty Shades Of Grey, but after pulling out of that film and completing work on Sons Of Anarchy, he’s been looking for other projects.

Now he may be heading into the drugs industry, as Deadline reports that Legendary Pictures, who worked with Hunnam on Pacific Rim and the upcoming Crimson Peak, is planning a movie based 2011 Rolling Stone article called American Drug Lord as a potential star vehicle for Hunnam. Jason Hall (American Sniper) will write the script.

The Rolling Stone article tells the story of ‘Edgar Valdez, a high school football player from Texas who would become the only U.S. citizen to rise to the level of cartel leader in Mexico. From his base in Acapulco, Valdez, who brought the nickname La Barbie that was given him by his high school football coach, made $130 million in one year moving drugs from Colombia. He became increasingly feared and allegedly ratcheted up the violence that involved filming the brutal executions of rivals and posting them on the Internet. As the drug riches escalated along with the violence, the rival cartels turned on one another, with the help of crooked cops. Valdez’s life became a struggle to stay alive.’

It’s not known when the movie might shoot.

John Krasinski Is On For Michael Bay’s Benghazi Movie, 13 Hours

January 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

John-KrasinskiMichael Bay is getting a bit more serious for his next movie, as rather than transforming robots, he’s heading for the very real and deadly events that took place at the US Mission in Benghazi in 2012.

Now he’s starting to put together his cast, as Variety reports that John Krasinski is the first to sign up, with the former Office actor set to play a Navy SEAL in the movie.

The movie is based on Mitchell Zuckoff’s book, which centres on six members of a security team. After the facility came under attack from militants angered about the recently release of a trailer for an Islam-bashing film called ‘Innocence Of Muslims’ and the anniversary of 9/11.

The team fought to defend the lives of the Americans in the compound, although the attack claimed the life of US Ambassador Christopher J. Stevens and a foreign service worker, while two contract workers died in a second attack at a nearby CIA facility.

Chuck Hogan (The Town, The Strain) wrote the screenplay.

It’s certainly something different for Bay, who’s better known for hyperbolic action and explosions in movies where the plot is more than a little ridiculous. Here though he’s dealing with real and very controversial events, and it’s sure many will be watching closely to see how he handles it.

Rodrigo Santoro Is Jesus (In the remake of Ben-Hur)

January 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rodrigo-SantoroRodrigo Santoro is going from living god in the 300 movies to Son Of God in the planned remake of Ben-Hur, as he’s set to play Jesus in the movie, according to THR.

He joins Jack Huston as the title character, alongside Toby Kebbell as Messalla. While the two were friends as boys, with the coming of the Romans, Messalla betrays Ben-Hur, which results in his being sold into slavery. He then meets a character played by Morgan Freeman, who teaches him to become a champion chariot racer.

The story take place in parallel to that of Jesus, which its said will be more central to this version than the peripheral (and never properly seen) figure he was in the Oscar-winning 1959 version, hewing closer to Lew Wallace’s original 1880 novel.

Timur Bekmambetov is set to direct from a screenplay by Keith R. Clarke, with production set to kick off soon for a February 19th, 2016 release.

Gay Short Film Showcase: The Last Time I Saw Richard – Two teens connect in a mental health unit

January 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

last-time-i-saw-richardWe loved The Last Time I Saw Richard when we reviewed it as part of the short film collection, Boys On Film 11: We Are Animals, giving it 9 out of 10. Now the fab short is online for all to see and you can watch it below – it’s a film full or surprises, moving from the emotionally affecting to the very creepy, all while building a sense of tension and successfully bringing you into the world of lost teens looking for something to hold onto.

As we noted in our review, the short was designed as a prequel to a movie, and director Richard Verso has given is an update on the project, saying, ‘The feature is called Boys In The Trees.  I’ve written it and will be directing. It’s produced by John Molloy for Mushroom Pictures (Wolf Creek, Chopper) and we’ll be shooting in South Australia later this year.

‘On Halloween 1997, two years after The Last Time I Saw Richard, teen skater Corey encounters Jonah, a former childhood friend and now nemesis. He begrudgingly agrees to walk Jonah home after an accident leaves Jonah concussed. What starts off as a normal walk through empty suburban streets descends into something surreal and magical as they tell each other ghost stories, drawing upon their fears, dreams and memories.

‘Toby Wallace will be returning as Jonah.’

Before that movie is made, we can enjoy The Last Time I Saw Richard, which you can watch below.

CSI: NY’s Gary Sinise Pulls Out Of Appearance At Anti-Gay Catholic Group’s Summit

January 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gary-siniseIf you’re a celebrity these days you really need to do your research. When Forrest Gump and CSI: New York star Gary Sinise signed up to make an appearance at a summit organised by the Catholic organisation Legatus, he probably thought it was a relatively innocuous gig.

However once his involvement was made public many – most notably Good As You – were quick to point out that Legatus has a long history of anti-gay actions, including continuing to insist same sex attractions as a ‘disorder’, promoting ex-gay therapies, publishing articles against any extension of gay rights, and supporting the president of the notoriously angry and homophobic, National Organisation For Marriage.

The furore has now caused Sinise to drop out of the Summit, issuing a statement saying, ‘For me, faith has been a catalyst for my mission to honor the men and women who serve in our nation’s military. When I accepted the invitation to speak at the Legatus conference on Veterans issues and share my story, I was unaware of the controversy surrounding some of the participants, and their views on personal matters. I don’t want my mission — which is designed to be unifying — to be disrupted by these, or any controversies, and therefore have decided to withdraw.’

He’s not the only one, as Fox News anchor Bret Baier has also dropped, with a spokeman saying, ‘Bret accepted the invitation to speak about his book, his faith, and his son’s congenital heart disease. He was unaware of these articles or the controversy surrounding them.’

New York’s Cardinal Dolan and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal are both still due to attend, and seeing as neither of them exactly have great pro-gay credentials, they probably won’t bother to pull out.
