The Disgustings Short Film – Drew Droege stars in a film about two gay guys who hate everything

October 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-disgustingsThere’s a stereotype of bitchy gay people who tear everyone around them down just to make themselves feel better and try to get people to ignore their own deficiencies. Unfortunately it’s a stereotype that many of us are well aware is grounded in some truth, usually coming from the more myopic and insecure wing of the gay community (and many more of us on certain occasions).

Now a new short film has arrived which skewers the trash talkers, The Disgustings, starring the wonderful Drew Droege alongside writer/director/star Jordan Firstman.

Talking to Huffpo, Firstman says, “I had been friends with Drew since I moved to L.A. and we’ve been in so many situations where we’ve seen the true definition of garbage people saying and doing horrible things. I think we have a power where we just attract crazy people. So I decided to write about it. And to be honest — sometimes we were the horrible people. Not all the time, but sometimes. So I wrote it as an homage to the crazies and an apology on behalf of the worst parts of my personality.”

You can take a look at the short below. [Read more…]

BFI Includes Gay Content In Major Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder Season

October 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

liquid-sky-slideIf there’s one genre where gay-themed entertainment has had to fight to make inroads on the screen, it’s sci-fi. Although some TV series have included LGBT characters, they’re still the exception rather than the rule. And in the movies gay content in sci-fi is even rarer.

With the BFI (British Film Institute) holding a major season called Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder, which largely concentrates on major moments and movies in the visionary genre, they’ve also decided to include a gay strand featuring a couple of little seen but very interesting gay-themes movie, a screening of the camp classic Barbarella and a look at gay and lesbians in TV sci-fi.

Films screening include Liquid Sky, a 1980s slice of punk sci-fi about aliens addicted to the chemicals humans produce while having sex. There’s also the controversial 1998 transgender splatter movie Dandy Dust, which features a Q&A with the creative team behind the movie.

Then on November 25th comes the panel discussion ‘Gays of Fear and Wonder: Queer Sci-Fi TV‘, which will look into both the past and future of LGBTs in TV sci-fi, with experts talking about and presenting clips showing how the possibilities for pushing the boundaries of sexuality and gender in sci-fi have been addressed on TV.

All this takes place within a season that ranges from screenings of The Hunger Games movies (including Mockingjay Part 1) and ET to 2001: A Space Odyssey and Metropolis, along with focuses on things such as Afrofutrism. The season is already underway and runs through to December 31st. You can find out more here.

Spielberg’s BFG Gets Its Giant In The Form Of The Acclaimed Mark Rylance

October 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mark-rylanceThere are few actors in the world as respected as Mark Rylance, but due to the fact he’s mainly been acclaimed on the stage – winning three Tony Awards and two Olivier Awards in the process – there are still plenty of people who have no idea what he looks like. Now though he’s taken a huge role in a major movie, although it’s still to be seen whether he’ll properly look like himself or get covered in CG.

Deadline reports he’s set to play the giant in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming movie version of Roald Dahl’s classic The BFG (Big Friendly Giant). The book concerns a young girl, the Queen of England and a benevolent giant known as the BFG. The three set out on an adventure to capture the evil, man-eating giants who have been invading the human world. There have been suggestions the film will somewhat change the story but the core will remain the same.

Spielberg comments, “As I witnessed on stage, Mark Rylance is a transformational actor. I am excited and thrilled that Mark will be making this journey with us to Giant Country. Everything about his career so far is about making the courageous choice and I’m honored he has chosen The BFG as his next big screen performance.”

Dahl’s grandson, Luke Kelly, adds, “We are ecstatic at this choice. Mark is incredibly talented, one of the great British actors working today. I’ve had the privilege of seeing Mark perform, and the thought of watching him transform into ‘the only nice and jumbly Giant in Giant Country’ is, as The BFG himself might say, absolutely phizz-whizzing.”

Rylance already has a role in Spielberg’s upcoming Untitled Cold War Thriller, which stars Tom Hanks. The BFG shoots next year with a July 1st, 2016 release date set.

The Newsroom – Season 2 (DVD Review)

October 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Dev Patel, Olivia Munn, Alison Pill
Director: Various
Running Time: 470 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 27th 2014 (UK)

Aaron Sorkin is perhaps the best known writer working in entertainment today. He’s part of a very select group of people where an entire show can be sold purely on the fact he created it. He’s renowned for taking on the issues of the modern world, dissecting and criticising the problems he’s sees with America and the things that are taking it away from being the glorious nation he believes it is at heart. As a result he’s often been criticised by those who have a different view of the world – usually a more sharply right wing view – and that was certainly true of the first season of The Newsroom. Robin Williams’ Last Performance As A Gay Man Having Difficulty Getting A Release

October 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

boulevard-robin-williams-slideYou would have thought that after Robin Williams’ death it wouldn’t be too difficult to get his final films out to the public, but unfortunately it’s proving difficult with one of his movies, Boulevard, in which he plays a gay man.

The Daily Mirror reports that it’s proving an uphill battle to find a distributor who will put the movie on the big screen. A source is reported to have said: “It’s really sad but it is looking impossible that Boulevard will ever see the light of day now. It has proved to be a struggle for it to find the support it needs to be released. The cast have tried, as have the crew. But for many reasons it is looking very unlikely. There is one suggestion it isn’t up to scratch and is failing on merit to find anyone to distribute it.”

It’s particularly surprising as the film has received good notices at festival screenings when it’s been shown at the likes of Tribeca and Outfest. In the film Williams plays a man who has been married to a woman for years, but must confront the fact that secretly he knows that he’s really gay after he becomes infatuated with a young male prostitute.

It is possible the film is having difficulty finding a distributor due to the fact it’s quite serious and not always an easy watch, which combined with the tragedy surrounding the actor may be putting some companies off. However it’s also possible that while there are distributors who’d be willing to take the film on, they’re not willing or able to give the movie the kind of big push it would need to finding success in the crowded indie market.

The likelihood is the film will arrive at some point, although it may end up going straight-to-DVD.

The other three films Williams made before he died have already secured releases, with Night At The Museum 3 and A Merry Friggin’ Christmas due out in the US in the next couple of month, with his voice work as a dog in Absolutely Anything arriving next year.

We also have the first proper footage in a video announcing that the trailer is due to arrive soon.

Sharknado 2: The Second One (Blu-ray Review)

October 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ian Ziering, Tara Reid, Vivica A. Fox, Mark McGrath, Kari Wuhrer
Director: Anthony C. Ferrante
Running Time: 95 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 27th 2014 (UK)

Oh dear God, here we go again. Sharknado became a bit of an odd sensation last year, not because anyone thought it was going to be a good film, but purely because of the title. Indeed as director Anthony C. Ferrante openly admits in the Featurette on the Sharknado 2 Blu-ray, the first film was only made after the Syfy Channel liked a joke about a sharknado in one of Ferrante’s earlier movies and decided they wanted to create an entire movie based around that word being the title.

After the success of the first one – it was admittedly success mired in utter derision, but it was success nevertheless – a sequel was inevitable. And to be honest it’s rather like the first one – unable to decide how much of a comedy it is and what sort it should be, as well as constantly flirting on the line between trying to ensure the audience has a good time and having so little respect for them that there are moments that feel like the cinematic equivalent of someone giving you the finger. Godzilla (Blu-ray Review)

October 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins
Director: Gareth Edwards
Running Time: 123 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: October 27th 2014 (UK)

After the disaster that was Roland Emmerich’s dreadful 1998 take on Godzilla you might have thought Hollywood would never touch the property again. However the massive monster has returned in a movie that sticks closer to the original Japanese Toho ideas than Emmerich’s efforts, and yet is still very much a modern blockbuster.

While working at a Japanese Nuclear Reactor in the late 1990s, Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston) lost his wife (Juliette Binoche) during a meltdown. However he’s never believed it was caused by an earthquake and has become obsessed with the idea that something is being hidden in the supposed disaster area. After recruiting his estranged son, Ford (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), they venture into the hot zone and discover that not only is there no radiation, but that an organisation called Monarch is hiding a pupating monster. Controversial Gay Film Cruising Becomes A Kids’ Playset In A Great Spoof Short

October 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Crusing-Electric-slideThe 1980 Al Pacino movie Cruising is one of the most controversial gay-themed films ever made and still has the power to raise many people’s hackles. But now director Brumby Boylston has decided to turn the controversy on its head by creating a Cruising children’s electric playset in a new short film.

Cruising follows Pacino’s cop character as he goes undercover in New York’s gay leather scene in order to catch a serial killer, but finds himself seduced by the hard partying, drugs and erotic atmosphere. Even before it started shooting there were protests in the streets due to the fact it was based on a short story many deemed deeply homophobic. The anger was so great that director William Friedkin agreed to add some text to the beginning of the movie saying that the film was not supposed to reflect all of the gay community.

More recently Cruising became the inspiration for James Franco and Travis Mathews’ unusual queer-themed film, Interior Leather Bar.

Here though it becomes a great toy, complete with a car to go cruising in, strangers to make eye-contact with and it’s educational too, as youngsters will need to know all about the hanky code to play – all shown to us in a pitch-perfect take on 1980s toy marketing. Take a look below.

The short has screened to acclaimed around the world, including at Sundance and the New York Queer Film Festival. [Read more…]
