Upcoming London Event Wants To Explore The World Of Queer Feminist Porn

August 15, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

What is feminist porn? It’s a question many people wouldn’t even know where to start with, partly because (straight) porn and feminism are often presented as being completely antithetical to one another. However, many feel that the divide between the two is an artificial one, and that porn can be made from a feminist perspective and without the objectification of women that is often so problematic in normal porn.

A one-off event at The Book Club in London plans to take a look at this, with ‘Feminist Porn: where to find it and how to feel good watching it’.

The owner and director of Dreams of Spanking, Pandora Blake, will guide attendees ‘through the wild and wonderful world of feminist porn. As a queer pornographer and sexual liberties campaigner (as well as a lover of tea, cats and caning), Pandora will discuss how you can access porn that turns you on but doesn’t make you feel as though you’re contributing to exploitation. Come along to discover the world of porn which exists outside the male gaze, and learn more about what it means to work in the porn industry as a feminist. #SuperCulture Sex Ed for Grown Ups, a new series of events on sex, sexuality and gender – from science to strip-tease. And because you’re a fully fledged adult now, you can do all of this with a drink in-hand.’

The event takes place at The Book Club on Leonard Street in London on August 31st, starting at 7.30pm. You can book a ticket on the website.

Let Me Die A Nun: Season 1 – A nearly nun realises she’s a lesbian in the LGBT-themed comedy web series

August 15, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A new web series has hit the web, and it’s certainly worth a look. Let Me Die A Nun, follows ‘the opposing but intersecting trajectories of a lesbian soon-to-be nun (Ana Fabrega), her Jewish stalker (Carl Kranz), and the object of her affection (Hari Nef).’

As that synopsis suggests, the show is rather unexpected, but also rather fun. The six-episode first season has now been released online, so we can all take a look.

Writer/director Sarah Salovaara commented to, IndieWire, “We’re all very familiar with coming out narratives in LGBTQ cinema, and they’re not necessarily the most stirring of genres. So I wanted to look at it in a heightened context like the church, where the realization that you are gay alters the entire course of your life.”

Take a look at Season 1 below. (H/T Out) [Read more…]

The Meyerowitz Stories Trailer – Adam Sandler teams with Noah Baumbach for a critically praised movie

August 15, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The words ‘Adam Sandler’ and ‘critical praise’ are rarely written in the same sentence, but it’s true of The Meyerowitz Stories, which debuted in competition at Cannes and got a lot of positive notices. While the presence of director Noah Baumbach probably helps, Sandler is apparently really good.

He’s also got some great actors in support including Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson. And all this for a movie that will be largely bypassing cinemas and going straight onto Netflix.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From writer/director Noah Baumbach, The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) is the emotional and comic intergenerational tale of adult siblings (Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, and Elizabeth Marvel) contending with the long shadow their strong-willed father (Dustin Hoffman) has cast over their lives.  With an original screenplay by Baumbach, the film also stars Emma Thompson, Grace Van Patten, Adam Driver, Candice Bergen, Judd Hirsch, and Rebecca Miller. The film was produced by Scott Rudin, Baumbach, Lila Yacoub, and Eli Bush.

‘An Official Selection of Cannes Film Festival 2017, the film will make its North American premiere at this year’s New York Film Festival. The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) will be released on Netflix and in select cinemas on October 13th.’

The World’s Largest LGBT Short Film Prize, Iris Prize, Announces Its 2017 Shortlist

August 14, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

This October, the wonderful Iris Prize festival will launch once again in Cardiff, Wales, centred around its its short film programme, which precedes the awarding of the world’s largest LGBT Short Film prize. This year’s shortlist for that massive prize has now been announced, which features 35 shorts from 20 countries – and even a nod for a film directed by Danny DeVito.

One of the main things that makes Iris special is that the main award is structured around helping a filmmaker to create a new short film. The winner receives £30,000 worth of funding and expertise (supported by The Michael Bishop Foundation) which has resulted in some great new films, all backed by Iris.

Previous winners have included Dee Rees (US) – 2007, Till Kleinert (Germany) – 2008, Eldar Rapaport (Israel/US) – 2009, Magnus Mork (Norway) – 2010, Daniel Ribeiro (Brazil) – 2011, Grant Scicluna (Australia) – 2012, Tim Marshall (Australia) – 2013, Brendan McDonall (Australia) – 2014, Arkasha Stevenson – 2015 (US) and Toby Fell-Holden – 2016 (UK), many of whom have gone on to create more fab LGBT-themed shorts and feature films.

This year Brendon McDonald, who was the popular 2014 winner of the Iris Prize and the 3rd Australian to take the Iris Prize, is the first winner to be shortlisted again, after his film school in Sydney submitted his latest short film The Dam. The Dam is the story of a lifelong friendship which comes under siege when two mature men visit the monolithic dam that defined their young lives and are confronted by feelings
that were impounded long ago, but cannot be contained any longer.

There’s also a short from none other than Danny DeVito. Curmudgeons was directed, produced and stars the popular New York actor. The film has already played extensively on the international circuit including BFI Flare, London and Frameline in San Francisco who nominated the film, which features two men who discover love late in life.

You can find out more about the impressively eclectic lineup for this year’s Iris Prize over on the festival’s official website. And to give you a taster, take a look at montage of the competing films below.

The 2017 Iris Prize Festival runs from October 10th-15th in Cardiff, Wales. [Read more…]

Baby Steps (DVD Review) – A gay couple having a baby is complicated by a Taiwanese mother

August 14, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Barney Cheng, Michael Adam Hamilton, Grace Guei, Love Fang, Tzi Ma
Director: Barney Cheng
Running Time: 103 mins
Certificate: NR (US)
Release Date: August 15th 2017 (US)

In Los Angeles, Danny (Barney Cheng) is a well-respected gay man with a long-term boyfriend, and together they are planning to have a baby. However, in his homeland of Taiwan, his mother, Ma (Grace Guei), is still uncomfortable with her son’s sexuality, never asks about his love-life and doesn’t even know about his partner, Tate (Michael Adam Hamilton).

Danny hasn’t told his mom about his baby plans, but when his brother lets the secret out, Ma gets very excited, as it means she may finally get a grandchild. She flies out to LA, where she’s less than impressed with Danny’s surrogacy plans, and also unsure how to deal with Danny’s ‘friend’, Tate. As they struggle to deal with one another, the hoped for baby could bring them all together and finally get Ma to accept her son, or it could drive them all apart. [Read more…]

Kept Boy (DVD Review) – A gay man isn’t sure what to do when he loses his boy toy status

August 13, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Jon Paul Phillips, Thure Riefenstein, Greg Audino, Deosick Burney, John-Michael Carlton
Director: George Bamber
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: August 7th 2017 (UK), August 8th 2017 (US)

Is this a knockabout romantic comedy or a soulful, sexual drama? The reason I ask is because if you looked at the cover of the US DVD release, you’d probably expect the former, while the UK version goes for the latter. It’s not too often you see covers that look like they’re for such completely different movies.

The truth is that Kept Boy is somewhere in the middle between comedy and melodrama, as while it certainly has the structure and feel of a rom com, it’s also interested in the more dramatic possibilities of its storyline. [Read more…]

Raw (DVD Review) – A young, naive woman gets cannibalistic desires (& a gay roommate)

August 13, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Garance Marillier, Ella Rumpf, Rabah Nait Oufella, Laurent Lucas, Joana Preiss
Director: Julia Ducournau
Running Time: 94 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: August 14th 2017 (UK)

Just occasionally I watch a movie and genuinely can’t decide whether it’s a case of the Emperor having no clothes. Raw is one of those films.

On its festival debut the Belgian movie was met with a lot off buzz, as well as talk of people walking out and fainting because of its intensity and levels of gore. It now has a 90% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is pretty remarkable for a ‘horror’ movie, but I’m not completely sure whether it deserves it or not. [Read more…]

Going In Style (Blu-ray Review) – Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman & Alan Arkin are going bank robbing

August 13, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Alan Arkin, Matt Dillon, Christopher Lloyd
Director: Zach Braff
Running Time: 96 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: August 14th 2017 (UK)

As a feature film director, Scrubs star Zach Braff has previously helmed the quirky indie comedies Garden State and Wish I Were Here. He’s gone far more mainstream with Going In Style, a movie that could have perhaps benefitted from a quirkier spirit.

The movie is a remake of a 1979 film that starred George Burns, Art Carney and Lee Strasberg, who have here been replaced by Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin. The three men are lifelong friends whose old age is being put in jeopardy by shady corporate goings-on that are set to rob them of their pensions. [Read more…]

Free Fire (Blu-ray Review) – Armie Hammer & co. have a shootout & a half

August 13, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Armie Hammer, Sharlto Copley, Brie Larson, Sam Riley, Jack Reynor
Director: Ben Wheatley
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: August 7th 2017 (UK)

After the complex and rather operatic JG Ballard adaptation High-Rise, Ben Wheatley has gone for something that’s far simpler in terms of plot, but perhaps just as complicated in terms of technical execution with Free Fire.

It’s the 1970s, and in a warehouse in Boston a group of American are hoping to sell some Irish men some guns. Things are already a little tense and distrustful when it’s revealed the weapons aren’t the exact ones ordered, but things get completely out of hand when one of the Yanks realises one of the Irish guys is the man who assaulted his cousin the night before. Anna Paquin & Holliday Grainger To Star In Lesbian Drama Tell It To The Bees

August 13, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Actresses Anna Paquin and Holliday Grainger are currently in Scotland to shoot the new movie, Tell It To The Bees. The film is a lesbian-themed drama, tinged with magical realism, based on Fiona Shaw’s novel, according to Deadline.

In the film, ‘Paquin plays Doctor Jean Markham who returns to her hometown to take over her late father’s practice. When a school-yard scuffle lands young Charlie in her office, she invites him to visit the hives in her garden and to tell his secrets to the bees as she once did. The friendship between the boy and the doctor brings his mother Lydia (Grainger) into Jean’s world. The women find themselves drawn to one another in a way that Jean recognizes and fears, and which Lydia could never have expected. But in 1950s small-town Britain, the secret won’t stay hidden forever.’

Annabel Jankel will direct. It’s a slightly different project for her, as she’s best known for her work in music videos and music documentaries, as well as her movies in the 80s and early 90s such as Max Headroom, D.O.A, and Super Mario Bros. Hopefully we’ll get to see Tell It To The Bees sometime next year.
