Ewan McGregor Up For American Pastoral Adaptation

June 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ewan-McgregorFor over a decade now Hollywood has been working on an adaptation of Philip Roth’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel American Pastoral. Various directors have come and gone, but it’s never gotten off the ground. The latest to give it a go is Philip Noyce, who suggests to ComingSoon that the biggest issue with getting the film made has been finding the right actor for the lead role.

However now he thinks he done it, as Ewan McGregor is attached to the film.

Roth is definitely one of the great men of American letters, but despite attempts such as Portnoy’s Complaint and The Human Stain, his books have proven very tough to turn into decent films. The 1997 American Pastoral follows Seymour ‘Swede’ Levov, a legendary high school athlete who grows up to marry a former beauty queen and inherits his father’s business. Swede’s seemingly perfect life shatters when his daughter rebels by becoming a revolutionary and commits a savage act of political terrorism during the Vietnam War.

It’s a great book, although Roth’s great strength is in painting the internal lives of his characters, something that can be tough to get across on screen.

Final Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes Trailer Arrives & It’s Looking Pretty Epic

June 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dawn_of_the_planet_of_the_apes_poster-slideCaesar and his simian chums have certainly moved on since Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, but their relationship with the few humans that survives a devastating plague isn’t that great.

Indeed it’s pretty much all out war.

Now the final trailer is here and it’s looking pretty epic.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.’

The film hits cinemas next month. [Read more…]

Jamie Dornan Is Looking Fine In The First Official Fifty Shades Of Grey Pic

June 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fifty-shades-pic1Although we’ve had some staged shots of Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson for Fifty Shades Of Grey, to celebrate Christian Grey’s birthday the first official in-movie pic from the film version has been released, which you can see above.

However while you might hope it would tease some of the film’s kinkier aspects, it’s a pretty safe shot.

The movie follows 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey (Dornan) and his S&M filled affair with young college student Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson). Jennifer Ehle, Victor Rasuk, Eloise Mumford and Max Martini also star. Sam Taylor-Johnson is directing from a script by Kelly Marcel, Patrick Marber and Mark Bomback.

It’s due out February 13th 2015.

Colin Trevorrow Teases Jurassic World Dinosaur With A New Pic

June 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jurassic-world-dino-teaseDirector Colin Trevorrow may have been forced to reveal more about the Jurassic World plot than he’d wanted to, but he still wants to keep teasing us, including with the image he tweeted above.

Last wee we got three pictures from the film, but they were all of the human cast, so this is the first (kind of) look at the actual creatures.

He didn’t say which dino this is. It could be a T-rex, but there’s also the possibility it’s a promised new dino, which is a mix of DNA from different creatures. Hopefully we’ll get a full look summer.

The film is due out summer 2015.

My Gay Roommate – Season 3, Ep 5: All Good Things – Check out the latest instalment of the web series

June 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

my-gay-roommate-s3-ep5The extremely fun May Gay Roommate returns with the entertaining fifth instalment of the third season.

There have been plenty of changes for Nick (Noam Ash) this season, not least finding a new straight roommate and moving in with him. Then there’s been all the frankly fantastical things happening around them, including the coming out of a cowboy and Nick subsequently having to deal with the morning after.

As actor and co-creator Noam Ash told HuffPo, “With the help of King George Michael and some Macarena, Nick helps Ed cope with lady problems from the past and find some faith. Gay pop stars DO solve everything! Ed makes a big decision, and we bid farewell to one of our imaginary characters. All good things, you know?”

Steve Martin Says He Hasn’t Heard About A Gay Father Of The Bride 3

June 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

father-of-the-bride-1991Yesterday we reported on a story from NikkiFinke that Disney was working on a third film in the Father Of The Bride franchise, with the film set to revolve around a gay wedding.

While the original story suggested Steve Martin was set to star, the actor himself suggests otherwise. He took to Twitter to say, ‘So excited to read I’m doing Father of the Bride 3 since I haven’t seen a script or been offered the role!’

The 1991 Father Of The Bride and its 1995 sequel followed Martin’s George Banks as he gave away his daughter and then had to learn to accept that she was now a woman. The third instalment was said to shift the focus to his son, Matty (originally played by Kieran Culkin), who’s now 29 and lets his parents know he intends to marry the son of a Navy SEAL.

It’s now difficult to say whether the film exists at all, or whether it’s just saying that Martin is involved is premature. Nikki Finke left Deadline, the website she founded, under rather acrimonious circumstances last year, saying she was going to build a new site that would leave her old one in the dust. However the insider exclusives that made Deadline both loved and hated by Hollywood have been rather thin on the ground for her new site, so she may have been jumping the gun here.

Guardians Of The Galaxy UK Trailer – Including our best look yet at Rocket Raccoon

June 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

guardians-of-the-galaxy-uk-posterIt seems like we’ve been waiting forever for Guardians Of The Galaxy, but it’s just a month and a half until Marvel’s space opera gamble arrived in cinemas. To make sure our interest doesn’t flag a new UK trailer has been released, which includes plenty of new footage, including what’s probably our best look yet at Rocket Raccoon.

And there’s also a rather cool new poster, which you can see above.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team—the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

‘Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which first appeared in comic books in Marvel Super-Heroes, Issue #18 (Jan. 1969), stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Nova Prime Rael and Benicio Del Toro as The Collector. James Gunn is the director of the film with Kevin Feige, p.g.a., producing. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Jeremy Latcham, Alan Fine and Stan Lee serve as executive producers. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is written by James Gunn and Nicole Perlman and releases in UK cinemas in 3D on Thursday July 31, 2014.’ [Read more…]

Jared Leto May Find Brilliance, Replacing Will Smith

June 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jared-LetoBefore Dallas Buyers Club, Jared Leto hadn’t made a film since Mr. Nobody in 2009 (largely by choice as he was concentrating on music), but since his Best Supporting Actor win there’s understandably been a lot of interest in him.

Now he may have found a new role, as Deadline reports that he is in early talk to take the lead role in Brilliance. The news comes just a few weeks after the previously attached Will Smith bailed on the movie.

David Koepp (Jurassic Park) came up with the script, based on the Marcus Sakey novel. The book is set in a world where special individuals known as ‘brilliants’ have heightened abilities. The plot follows a government agent whose ‘brilliant’ gift is tracking down terrorists. However he may have met his match when tasked to find a dangerous man in Wyoming with his own set of special skills.

Noomi Rapace is also attached, with Julius Onah (Undefeated) directing.

Kathryn Bigelow & Todd Field Plan Rival Bowe Bergdahl Films

June 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kathryn-bigelowIt’s perhaps not surprising that Bowe Bergdahl is intriguing a lot of filmmakers – his story brings up a lot of issues about the War On Terror, not least the controversy over his release and whether he went AWOL before his capture by the Taliban or not.

Now Deadline reports that Zero Dark Thirty director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal are re-teaming up for a film about Bergdahl, while Little Children’s Todd Field and Fox Searchlight have set a rival film in motion. The latter movie will be based on a 2012 Rolling Stone article entitled America’s Last Prisoner of War, written by Michael Hastings.

The film will explore the story of the solider who in 2009, was captured by the Taliban and spent five years in captivity after reportedly wandering off his base, with suggestions that he was upset about the incompetence of others around him and the bureaucracy surrounding the war.

He was eventually released on May 31, 2014, in exchange for five Taliban prisoners being held at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. While some were ready to welcome Bowe back as a hero, other said President Obama had given up too much for a man who may be a deserter (and the Army hasn’t ruled out charging him over that).

Both are currently in the early stages of development, so it’s impossible to tell which one will get off the ground first. There’s also the fact this is still an unfolding story, and subsequent revelations could affect both movie.
