James Franco Set To Play Gay Artist Robert Mapplethorpe

January 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

James Franco needs to take a holiday or he’s going to burn himself out. It seems that every day there’s news of another project he’s linked to, and while many stars sign up for things and then drop out, Franco actually makes most of his. The lastest news is that he’s signed on to play controversial artist Robert Mapplethorpe in a new biopic, according to THR.

It’s another gay cultural icon for Franco, after Allen Ginsberg in Howl and Hart Crane in The Broken Tower. Mapplethorpe, who died of AIDS at the age of 42 in 1989, was extremely controversial as his photographs often depicted acts of bondage, sadomasochism, and gay sexuality. He was also known for taking photographs of celebrities, including Andy Warhol, Richard Gere, Grace Jones, Peter Gabriel and Patti Smith. Mapplethorpe’s work often raised questions about public funding of art and the line that separates art and obscenity.

The film will be mark narrative debut of documentary filmmaker Ondi Timoner. Originally the movie was being set up to star Nate Dushku, brother of Eliza, who’ve been spearheading the project, however it seems it needed a little more star power to get made. So does this mean Franco will be recreating Mapplethorpe fames photograph of himself with a whip handle up his butt?

It’s not the only movie about Mapplethorpe in the works, as Patti Smith is working on an adaptation of her memoir, Just Kids, about her the artist’s friendship before either of them became famous. There’s no news on when either movie might get made.

Haywire – The First Five Minutes

January 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I don’t know why more films don’t put the first five minutes online ahead of the release, as it’s a good way for people to be able to tell whether they want to see more (which is probably why a lot of rubbish movies don’t do it). Steven Soderbergh’s new film, Haywire, hits UK cinemas next Wednesday, and the opening has now popped up online, showing that it’s all action from the get-go! Here’s the synopsis: ‘Mallory Kane (newcomer Gina Carano) is a highly trained operative who works for a government security contractor in the dirtiest, most dangerous corners of the world. After successfully freeing a Chinese journalist held hostage, she is double crossed and left for dead by someone close to her in her own agency. Suddenly the target of skilled assassins who knew her every move, Mallory must find the truth in order to stay alive.’ The movie also stars Michael Douglas, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas and Channing Tatum.

Actor Alan Cumming Marries His Husband In New York

January 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Alan Cumming sure likes getting married to his partner as he’s now done it twice (sort of). Five years ago the bisexual star of The Good Wife and X-Men 2 entered a civil partnership with his longterm squeeze, Grant Shaffe. Now he’s announced that on the anniversary of that civil partnership, he and Grant got married in New York.

A few months ago, New York became the sixth US state to allow same sex couples full marriage rights, something Alan has decided to take advantage of.

When announcing the news, Cumming couldn’t help taking a swipe at idiotically anti-gay Republican Presidential hopeful Rick Santorum, saying ‘On the 5th anniversary of our wedding in London grant and I tied the knot again in NYC!!! #eatmericksantorum’.

Santorum hasn’t just said he’s against gay marriage, but also hopes to have all the marriages already performed in the US anulled if he becomes Commander In Chief.

Troll Hunter (DVD)

January 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Otto Jespersen, Glenn Erland Tosterud, Johanna Morck
Director: Andre Ovredal
Running Time: 103 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 9th, 2012

Troll Hunter is a movie that shouldn’t work. The whole thing has a faint whiff of the ridiculous about it, but thanks to a contradictory mix of absolute conviction and tongue-in-cheek knowingness it turns out to be a rollicking Brothers Grimm meets Blair Witch Project ride.

Purporting to be real footage mysteriously sent to a film company, the film follows a group of eager young filmmaking students who are out in the Norwegian wilds making a documentary about a spate of bear killings. Although the local legal hunters feel there’s something odd about these dead bears, they also think they might know who’s responsible, a man called Hans, who they believe is a poacher. While Hans initially wants nothing to do with the documentary crew, they won’t be shaken off and while following him late at night they have a close encounter with a strange creature. Hans is convinced it’s a troll, but surely these fairytale creatures can’t exist? [Read more…]

Justin Timberlake ‘Very Seriously’ Considering Playing Elton John In Biopic

January 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of days ago we reported that Elton John is still busy at work on a biopic of his life and that, “I’ve got a wish list of people. Number one on my wishlist is Justin Timberlake, because he played me before in a David LaChapelle video of Rocket Man and he was superb.”

At the time though it wasn’t certain whether anyone has spoken to Justin about it or how interested the singer turned actor might be. Now E!Online has got word from Timberlake’s camp, with a source saying, “Justin is taking it very seriously. He’s working with his people to figure out exactly how to respond.”

It’s still a long way from saying he’ll actually do it, but it’s a good indication that everything will come together.

Elton has confirmed that he’ll co-produce the film with his civil partner, David Furnish, and that it’ll be a “surreal look at my life, and not just a factual look at my life, more in the manner of a Moulin Rouge”. The singer, who’s never been averse to a bit of flamboyance, added that a “normal biopic” would be innappropriate “because my life hasn’t been like that”. There’s no info on when it might film though.

Streetdance 2 Trailer

January 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

To watch this video, you need the latest Flash-Player and active javascript in your browser.

Streetdance surprised many when it became a huge hit at UK cinemas in 2012. A sequel quickly got the greenlight in the hope of mopping up some more cash. Whether the follow-up will succeed is tought to tell, as you can’t help but feel the first film was slightly riding on the popularity of 3D, which has rather waned since then. However with all things urban still in vogue, it’ll probably still find an appreciative audience.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When top street dancer Ash (Falk Hentschel) is humiliated and laughed off stage by American crew Invincible, he sets off to gather the best dancers from around the world to take them on – with a dance style they weren’t expecting.  With landmark locations, a spectacular fusion of dance styles and an unparalleled vibrancy, the sequel to StreetDance sees our hero fall in love with a beautiful salsa dancer as he discovers the magic, power and passion of dancing for the ultimate global dance off.’ It’s out March 30th, but a new trailer has now arrived.

The Artist (Cinema)

December 29, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jean DuJardin, Berenice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell
Director: Michel Hazanavicius
Running Time: 100 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: Dec 30th (London), Jan 6th (Nationwide)

I don’t know why people are saying The Artist should win at the Oscars. It’s obvious director Michel Hazanavicius doesn’t know how to make a movie. For a start, he made the film in black and white. Doesn’t he know the world got coloured in during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s? Plus, he’s so incompetent he forgot to record the dialogue, so he just plays some music and occasionally has a caption card come up on screen, as if that’s a sensible way of telling a story.

He doesn’t even manage to make it in the right aspect ratio, as it’s the same width-to-length as old style-TVs. Hell, it’s not even in 3D! Hazanavicius needs to go back to square one, watch some Michael Bay movies and learn how to make real, proper films with explosions and stuff. This is the 21st Century! [Read more…]

Tatum, McConaughey & Pettyfer Prepare To Strip Down In First Pic From Magic Mike

December 27, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

If you like male celebrity skin, you’re gonna be happy with Magic Mike, which sees the likes of Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Bomer playing strippers, all based on Tatum’s days as a young man taking his clothes off for cash!

Warner has released the first image from the Steven Soderbergh movie, which sees Tatum as Mike, an experienced stripper who takes a young dancer called The Kid (Alex Pettyfer) under his wing and schools him in the fine arts of partying, picking up women, and making easy money. McConaughey, who’s looking oddly patriotic in the image above, plays a slightly older stripper who now owns his own club. It’s due out in June.
