Ron Howard Is Taking Over As Director Of The Han Solo Star Wars Spin-off

June 22, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While occassionally a director is sidelined during the post-production period, it’s incredibly unusual for them to be ousted while filming is still going on. However, that’s what’s happened on the planned Han Solo spin-off movie, with Lucasfilm and helmer Phil Lord and Christopher Miller parting company with three weeks left on the production schedule.

Reports suggest executives felt the directors weren’t hitting the right tone, and that the creative differences they’d had with Lord and Miller since early in pre-production just getting worse. It’s rumoured that the directors’ comedic, improvisational style made some concerned they didn’t really understand the character of Han Solo or the script they were working from, while the footage they were producing made it difficult to tell what the finished movie might be like.

However, with production underway they’ve had to act quickly to plug the gap, with THR reporting that Ron Howard has come onboard to helm the movie. Howard was previously offered The Phantom Menace, but passed that opportunity up, but now the Da Vinci Code helmer will take over the Han Solo movie, finish principle shooting and then guide the film through its extensive post-production process. Lucasfilm will be hoping he can pull things together to their satisfaction.

The studio comments, “At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began 40 years ago. With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew and the absolute commitment to make a great movie.”

Production will resume on July 10th, once Howard has had a chance to familiarise himself with the project and see what he thinks it needs.

Interestingly, it’s not known yet who will get the directors’ credit on the finished film. The Directors’ Guild usually only allows a single director, and is likely to be very unhappy about allowing three, even if that would seem the most sensible option.

Ryan Phillippe Says He’s ‘Proud’ To Have Played US Daytime TV’s First Gay Teen

June 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Before I Know What You Did Last Summer, 54 and Cruel Intentions, Ryan Phillippe began his career on the legenary US soap, One Life To Live. In 1992 and 1993 he appeared in several episodes of the show as illy Douglas, who just happened to be the first gay teen on US daytime TV.

Now Phillippe has been looking back on that early role while promoting his new movie, Wish Upon. He told Too Fab, “There had never been a gay teenager portrayed on television at that point. It was before Will & Grace, before Ellen came out, it’s before any of that stuff. I remember the fan mail that my mother and I would get from gay teenagers or from parents of gay teenagers who found a way in to relate to or talk to their child through this show.”

Even though he was only 17 at the time, he remembers, “understanding and appreciating that back then even when I was only a teenager myself.”

It’s a role he looks back on fondly, saying, “I’m proud to have done it, I’m proud that that’s something I can say was a part of my career.”

You can take a look at Ryan’s comments below, as well as the scenes from One Life To Live where Billy came out. [Read more…]

After Louie Trailer – Alan Cumming gets an unexpected younger lover in the gay-themed movie

June 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We really liked After Louie when we caught it a few months ago at the BFI Flare London LGBT Film Festival. Now a trailer for the movie has arrived, so you can get a better taste for the film.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘After Louie follows Sam (Alan Cumming), an artist and activist from ACT UP who lived through the early years of HIV/AIDS — a man scarred and still struggling with survivor’s guilt. Cemented into an oppressive past, he is bewildered by a younger generation of carefree gay men with their uninhibited use of social media, sexting, and seeming political indifference. But when he meets the seductive young Braeden (Zachary Booth) at a bar late one night, their pants quickly come down and, eventually, so does Sam’s ossified guard. As the pair become increasingly intimate, an intergenerational relationship blossoms between them-one capable of reawakening Sam’s artistic soul and reviving his wilted heart.’

June 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

On its Sundance debut, God’s Own Country was met with huge amounts of praise, with director Francis Lee picking up the World Cinema – Dramatic Directing award. Some have even suggested it has the potential for Brokeback style crossover success.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Johnny Saxby works long hours in brutal isolation on his family’s remote farm in the north of England. He numbs the daily frustration of his lonely existence with nightly binge-drinking at the local pub and casual sex. When a handsome Romanian migrant worker arrives to take up temporary work on the family farm, Johnny suddenly finds himself having to deal with emotions he has never felt before. An intense relationship forms between the two which could change Johnny’s life forever.’

Win The Gay-Themed Best Picture Oscar Winner, Moonlight On Blu-ray!

June 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Moonlight was the little film that could. A movie that seemingly came out of nowhere to take the Best Picture Oscar at this year’s Academy Award ceremony. It was a stunning achievement for an indie, gay-themed movie. Now, as the movie arrives on Blu-ray, DVD and VoD in the UK, we’ve teamed up with Altitude Film Distribution Home Entertainment to give away a Blu-ray copy in this competition..

Moonlight is a moving coming-of-age drama about a young African American man growing up in a tough neighbourhood of Miami. The film has already garnered world-wide praise beating a stellar line up including La La Land and Hidden Figures for Best Picture at the 2017 Academy Awards®. Moonlight features an amazing cast of fresh and upcoming talent, including an Academy Award winning performance from Mahershala Ali (House of Cards,) and former athlete Trevante Rhodes (Westworld). The film also stars André Holland (The Knick), Janelle Monáe (Hidden Figures), Naomie Harris (Skyfall), Ashton Sanders (Straight Outta Compton) and Jharrel Jerome (Monster).

Moonlight follows Chiron, a young black man from his early childhood in his depressed Miami neighbourhood to adulthood in Atlanta. Chiron navigates the dangers of drugs and violence in the 1980s, in addition to his burgeoning homosexuality and love for his best friend played by Jharrel Jerome and André Holland. Broken up into three chapters of his life over 10 years, three actors play Chiron: newcomer Alex Hibbert as the quiet boy nicknamed Little, dealing with the taunting of bullies, Ashton Sanders and then as the older Chiron, Trevante Rhodes.

For your chance to win Moonlight on Blu-ray, answer the question below and fill in your details, then press submit! The competition closes on July 3rd, 2017, so get answering and good luck. [Read more…]

Michael Fassbender’s Alien: Covenant Gay Kiss Cut From Chinese Release By Censors

June 18, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

One of the most intriguing scenes in Alien: Covenant involves Michael Fassbender snogging himself – or least the androids he plays, Walter and David, lean in for a kiss. However, Chinese audiences won’t get the unusual pleasure of the actor kissing himself, as the censors in the country have cut it from the movie.

As THR reports, Chinese censors routinely cut a lot of the violence from Hollywood films, including 14 minutes from Logan and eight from Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. However, the six minutes that it took from Alien: Covenant wasn’t just about violence, as it also included the android-on-android gay kiss.

The ommission was noted shortly after the movie’s release on Friday, with Yu, a 26-year-old assistant at an advertising agency in Shanghai, quoted as saying, “For the other missing parts you don’t notice or know when it happens, but you can really feel something is missing where the gay kiss is supposed to be.”

Many knew the peck was supposed to be there after seeing media reports, and apparently the way it has been excised from the film is quite abrupt.

The Chinese censors are known to be pretty inconsistent with gay content, allowing it in some films and not in others. Some have suggested this shows divisions between more liberal and conservative parts of the censors’ office, with others saying it’s more political, both internally and externally. For example, allowing the innocuous ‘gay moment’ in Beauty & The Beast was trumpeted in the People’s Daily Worker, while the likes of Brokeback Mountain and even some Chinese-produced movies with gay content have been banned outright.

You can take a look at the Fassbender-on-Fassbender kiss here.

Director: Joe McClean
Running Time: 87 min
Certificate: NR (US)

20-years-ago a group of Drama Club high school friends went on a retreat together. Now they’re getting back together for an anniversary meetup. The friends have all stayed in touch via social media, but they haven’t seen each other all that much. As you might have expected, while many things have changed, others have stayed very much the same.

The previously nerdy Nathan has now muscled up and he’s not going to take the bully-ish antics of Luke anymore. However, the increasingly conservative Luke has his own issues, as he’s due to go to prison soon for white collar fraud. The popular Elle is now married, and while her husband doesn’t seem to mind the fact she’s slept with three of her old friends, Elle may take things too far. Hannah is now a born again Christian who’s saving her virginity for marriage (even though she’s had sex before), and may have a soft spot for one of her old friends. [Read more…]

The Lego Batman Movie (Blu-ray Review) – Has the Caped Crusader gone a little gay?

June 18, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, Zach Galifianakis, Ralph Fiennes
Director: Chris McKay
Running Time: 104 mins
Certificate: U
Release Date: June 19th 2017 (UK)

The Lego Movie was a surprise to many – a film that when it was announced sounded like such a bad idea turned out to be one of the funniest, most original animated movies of the last few years, and a major hit to boost. Warner Bros. suddenly realised they had the potential for something much bigger, so rather than just putting a sequel in the works, they started working on spin-offs, including a Ninjago movie and The Lego Batman Movie.

We first met the Lego version of Batman (Will Arnett) in The Lego Movie – an arrogant vigilante convinced of his own greatness and jealous of the praise other superheroes get. He starts out the same here, saving Gotham City from The Joker and a Rogues Gallery of villains, and confident about how awesome everyone thinks he is. However, he’s also obsessed with doing things alone, with the result that when he’s back at Wayne Manor, he only has his butler Alfred (Ralph Fiennes) for company. Batman thinks that for the best, but it may be because he’s afraid of having a family. [Read more…]

New Zealand’s First Lesbian Web Series, Pot Luck, Needs Your Help For Season 2

June 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

This time last year, most of the first season of New Zealand’s very first Lesbian web series. Now it’s hoping to come back for Season 2, but needs your help to do so. The makers have launched a crowdfunding campaign on Boosted, in the hope of raising $(NZ)16,500.

The series already has some funding NZ On Air’s Digital Fund. This has been bolstered by contributions from Wellington City Council’s Arts and Culture Fund and key sponsor Hell Pizza. But it needs the help of fans to top that up, with the hope of shooting starting in August.

Set in Wellington, New Zealand, Pot Luck Season 1 introduced the world to the lives of Mel, (Nikki Si’ulepa), Debs (Anji Kreft) and Beth, (Tess Jamieson-Karaha), three lesbian characters in their 30s and 40s. The universal themes of friendship, family and finding love have been positively received by a broad audience both in New Zealand and overseas, with the majority of viewers based in the United States.

Ness Simons, the writer and director, is looking forward to sharing the next stage of Mel, Debs and Beth’s friendship and romantic lives in season two, which picks up a few months after Season 1 finishes. She says, “The past few years have seen some great steps in terms of queer characters on screen but portrayals are still limited, and while there’s increasing mainstream acceptance of lesbians in shows such as Wentworth and Orange is the New Black, these characters are in jail and don’t really represent the everyday lesbian experience.”

Season 1 has had over two million views online, and has screened at festivals including UKWebFest, DubWebFest (Dublin), NZWebFest, LA based OutWebFest, Melbourne Queer Film Festival and Web Series Festival Global. It was a finalist in the LGBT categories at DubWebFest and the NZWebFest. Pot Luck recently swept the pool in the Rome Web Awards, winning 10 Merit awards in the LGBT category, which has led to 9 nominations in their Excellence Awards, to be announced very soon.

Take a look at the crowdfunding video below, and if you like what you see, head over to Boosted to help out. You can also catch up with Season 1 here. [Read more…]

Dusk Trailer – Duncan James stars in the second part of Jake Graf’s trans short film trilogy

June 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last year, trans director (and sometime actor) Jake Graf got huge amounts of praise for his wonderful short film, Dawn, which saw a blind man and a trans woman meeting while waiting for a bus. Dawn was the first part of a trilogy, which continues with Dusk, which has a rather dramatic trailer.

The film premieres tonight at the East End Film Festival in London as part of the New Queer Visions strand at the Rio, Dalston.

The short film is told through flashbacks over several decades of the protagonist ‘Chris” lifetime, exploring how the choices we make can change our lives fundamentally. The cast includes Duncan James, (Chicago, Legally Blonde, Hollyoaks), Victoria Emslie, (The Danish Girl, Downton Abbey, The Theory Of Everything), and US model and actor Elliott Sailors (Spectrum), and crew including award winning cinematographer Lorenzo Levrini and award winning composer Justine Barker.

Take a look at the trailer below. You can find out more about other East End Film Festival New Queer Visions screenings here. [Read more…]
