Joseph Kosinski May Direct Tom Cruise In Top Gun 2, Which Shoots Next Year

May 24, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Several years ago there was talk of a sequel to Top Gun, but that was put on hold when the movie’s director, Tony Scott, died back in 2012. However, now the movie is back on, with Tom Cruise revealing that he’s hoping to shoot the sequel next year, and Variety now adding that a director may already have been found.

The current frontrunner for the director’s chair is Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski, who’s previously worked with Cruise on Oblivion, and whose latest firefighting movie, Granite Mountain, is due for release later this year. Tom has apparently been busy ensuring Top Gun 2 would be ready to shoot next year while he’s been filming Mission Impossible: 6, which included interviewing directors. It was apparently Kosinski’s vision for the movie that won out, although no offer has yet been made to the director.

Not too much is known about the plot, but the film ‘will be set in a world of drone technology and fifth generation fighters and explore the end of an era of dogfighting which made the original film so exhilarating.’ It’s also believe Val Kilmer will return as Iceman, opposite Cruise’s Maverick.

Live By Night (DVD Review) – Ben Affleck tries to make a gangster classic

May 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ben Affleck, Elle Fanning, Chris Messina, Zoe Saldana, Chris Cooper
Director: Ben Affleck
Running Time: 123 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 22nd 2017 (UK)

Live By Night has been Ben Affleck’s passion project for several years. He started working on the adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel since shortly after it was published in 2012. However, it kept getting pushed back as be strove to prove he was a director worth the film’s hefty budget, and also while he honed the script (yes, he wrote the screenplay too, as well as directing and starring).

After Argo won the Best Picture Oscar, Warner let him loose on Live By Night, but to be honest, it might have been worth delaying it a little longer and bringing someone in who could have tightened the script and made more of the themes that should have tied it together. [Read more…]

La La Land (Blu-ray Review) – Should it have won the Best Picture Oscar for more than 90 seconds?

May 22, 2017 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

Starring: Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, J.K. Simmons, Callie Hernandez, John Legend
Director: Damien Chazelle
Running Time: 128 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: May 15th 2017 (UK)

It’s the film that won the Best Picture Oscar for a whole 90 seconds, before the Academy managed to says, ‘Whoops, sorry, it was actually Moonlight’. However, it did pick up six of film world’s most prestigious gongs, including Best Actress for Emma Stone, and Best Director for Damien Chazelle. It was also the favourite for the biggest prize going into the ceremony, having charmed audiences with its tale of two people trying to find both love and artistic success.

In LA, Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) is a jazz musician, working a dead-end job playing piano in a bar, but desperate to prove himself as a real force in a music form that many others have given up on. Mia (the brilliant Emma Stone) is a young woman who works as a waitress, but she also goes to a succession of auditions for movie and TV roles in the hope of finding success as an actress. Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge (Cinema Review) – Jack Sparrow is back!

May 22, 2017 By BigGayPictureShow Leave a Comment

Starring: Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Javier Bardem, Kaya Scodelario, Brenton Thwaites
Director: Joachim Ronning, Espen Sandberg
Running Time: 129 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: May 25th 2017 (UK)

To be honest I enjoy sequels and franchises as long as they keep up the standard and improve upon previous entries, which sadly often isn’t the case. I have reviewed countless sequels over the years and with this review I don’t want to regurgitate what I have previously written about franchises, and I will try to keep this to a minimum with this review as I don’t want to go over old ground; but rather tread new waters (pun fully intended).

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was a pleasant surprise to a lot of people when it came out in 2003. Many asked how could a film based on an old amusement park ride have such an effect on audiences around the world, and the answer is because it was fun. Cutthroat Island (1995) was a well-documented bomb at the box office and it was a risky move for Disney to release the first Pirates film, but it paid off both financially and critically. 120 Beats Per Minute Trailer – Eastern Boys’ Robin Campillo pays tribute to HIV/AIDS activist group ACT UP

May 22, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

One of the movies in competition at Cannes this year is 120 Beats Per Minute, from Eastern Boys helmer, Robin Campillo. The film is a bit of a love letter to ACT UP, the HIV/AIDS activist group that Campillo himself was involved with himself during his youth. While we normally hear about what ACT UP did in the US, this movie focuses on the grassroots organisation in France.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Early 1990s. With AIDS having already claimed countless lives for nearly ten years, Act up-Paris activists multiply actions to fight general indifference. Nathan, a newcomer to the group, has his world shaken up by Sean, a radical militant, who throws his last bits of strength into the struggle.’

Take a look at the trailer for the movie below. No release date is currently set beyond an August debut in France. [Read more…]

New Spider-Man Tom Holland Will Take The Lead In Uncharted Adaptation

May 22, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For over eight years Hollywood has been trying to adapt the hit videogame franchise Uncharted, convinced it might be able to break the curse of game-to-film tranfers. In that time it’s been through numerous writers, directors and actors, all of whom have had a go and then left.

They haven’t given up though, and the latest to come onboard to star is Tom Holland, the young British actor who took the world of Marvel by storm as Spider-man in Captain America: Civil War and who will soon be taking on the role again in Homecoming. Holland will play Nathan Drake in the Uncharted movie, which was originally being designed for an older actor.

Instead Sony (who are also behind Spider-man: Homecoming, of course) will now reconfigure the movie according to Deadline, to be a prequel to the treasure-hunting videogames, telling the story of ‘young thief Drake, and his first encounter with the professional rogue, Sullivan.’

Shawn Levy (Night At The Museum) is set to direct the movie, with Sony now looking for a new screenwriter to rework the script.

Improvised Lesbian Bachelorette Weekend Comedy Film, The Feels, Seeks Your Help

May 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

How would your friends react if you told them you’d never had an orgasm? That’s the predicament at the centre of the new movie, The Feels, which is currently seeking crowdfunding help on Kickstarter. The makers are hoping to raise at least $25,000 to help finish off post-production and get it to audiences.

So what’s it all about? Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Feels is an improvised comedy about a group of girlfriends (and one dude) on a lesbian bachelorette weekend in wine country. Andi (Constance Wu) and Lu (Angela Trimbur) are excited to celebrate their upcoming wedding with their closest friends. On the first night, the brides and their friends get wasted, and Lu admits to everyone that she’s never had an orgasm. This admission comes as a complete surprise to Andi and derails the weekend in unexpected and poignant ways. It causes everyone to reflect on trust, love, and their journeys to experiencing their first orgasm.’

Director/Co-writer Jenée LaMarque (who previously made The Pretty One starring Zoe Kazan and Jake Johnson) comments, “I’m excited about this subject matter (LOL) because the female orgasm is something that is relatively taboo, and rarely discussed in our culture. And while the film’s concept could have been executed in a very broad, and predictable way, we’ve taken a grounded, improvised approach that explores the underlying dynamics that allowed this “orgasm deception” to take place.”

She adds, “Looking at the statistics on representation of women in film and television can be really discouraging. But it is my intention in my career to “be the change” that I want to see in the world. And that is why our movie was purposefully engineered to create opportunities for women, POC and the LGBTQ community. We are proud to say that we have an 80% female cast and a 68% female crew.”

Take a look at the fundraising video below, and if you want to help out, head over to Kickstarter. [Read more…]

In A Heartbeat Trailer – Take a look at the CGI animated gay-themed short that smashed its Kickstarter

May 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

There aren’t many gay-themed computer animated LGBT-themed short films, and so In A Heartbeat is something a bit special. Many others have agreed, as after it launched a Kickstarter in the hope of raising $3,000 in the hope of finishing the short off, in ended up smashing that target and instead getting over $14,000 worth of pledges.

Esteban Bravo and Beth David from the Ringling College of Art are the filmmakers behind the project, which will be three to four minutes long when complete. In the short, ‘A closeted boy runs the risk of being outed by his own heart after it pops out of his chest to chase down the boy of his dreams.’

Bravo says, “Being gay is a subject that hasn’t been widely explored in computer animation. Nine out of ten LGBT youths have reported incidences of bullying based on their orientations and identities.”

David adds, “We want to put out a message of love and self acceptance to all the kids and young people who struggle to identify as LGBT+ just like Sherwin does.”

Bravo continue, “The heart wants what the heart wants, and there’s nothing wrong with that.”

Take a look at the cute trailer below. In A Heartbeat is expected to be released online for free sometime this summer. [Read more…]

Tom Hardy On For Spider-Man Spin-off Venom, With Ruben Fleischer Set To Direct

May 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tom Hardy sure seems to like his comic book movies. After playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, he very nearly played Rick Flagg in Suicide Squad, until overruns on shooting The Revenant forced him to back out. Now he’s planning a return to the comic book world, as Variety reports that he’s set to star in Sony’s planned Spider-man spin-off, Venom.

The ‘alien symbiote that needs a human host to survive’ was introduced to movie audiences in Spider-man 3, but it left fans rather disappointed in how it was used and certainly didn’t leave viewers wanting more, despite how popular the character is in the Marvel comics. Not much has been revealed about the new film’s take on Venom. In the comics he’s generally been a supervillain, but it’s likely he’ll become more antihero for the movie.

Scott Rosenberg (“Jumanji”) and Jeff Pinkner (“The Dark Tower”) will write the script, with Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer recently coming on board to direct. The whole thing will have to come together quickly, as Sony wants to release the movie during October 2018.

Suicide Squad’s David Ayer May Direct Scarface Remake

May 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

David Ayer had a big hit with Suicide Squad (even if the critical reception was a little rough). Now he’s planning something that closer in tone to his earlier movies, such as Street Kings and End Of Watch. THR reports that Ayer is in talks to direct Universal’s planned remake of Scarface, following the departure of the previously attached Antoine Fuqua, who left due to scheduling conflicts.

Scarface first started out in 1932 when Howard Hawks directed the tale of the rise and fall of a violent gangster. However, most people remember Brian De Palma’s 1983 version starring Al Pacino as Tony Montana. The new version will change things once again, moving the action from Miami to LA and bringing it up to date to the modern day.

Diego Luna is set to the play the lead role in the movie.

Ayer’s next movie is Bright, will is Netflix’s first $100+ million movie, starring Will Smith, which is due to be released via the online service in December. Scarface should be released in cinemas sometime next year.
