Win The Acclaimed, Gay Themed 120 BPM On Blu-ray!

June 3, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Robin Campillo’s 120 BPM (aka 120 battements par minute) has been winning praise ever since it debuted at Cannes last year, including winning the Grand Prix and Queer Palm at the festival. It’s gone on to win multiple other awards, including Best Film at the Cesar Awards (France’s equivalent of the Oscars). Now it’s arriving on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on June 4th, and to celebrate we’ve teamed up with Curzon Artificial Eye to give away three copies of the movie on Blu-ray.

The lives of AIDS activists in early 90s Paris are reimagined in bold and vivid detail in 120 BPM, a stunning and heart-wrenching drama from the writer of Palme d’Or winner The Class, Robin Campillo. Winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes 2017 and a host of international awards, this is an essential work of cinema with a profoundly moving and delicately crafted love story at its heart.

As the AIDS epidemic tears through their community, the members of ACT UP Paris are fighting for survival. While they battle against governmental apathy, pharmaceutical greed and public ignorance, they also go out partying, debate politics and, occasionally, fall in love. One day, as outspoken radical Sean (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart) strikes up a conversation with shy newcomer Nathan (Arnaud Valois), they have no idea that their lives are about to change forever.

Based on the director’s own experiences, this vibrant and deeply emotional drama rushes with youthful energy, balancing powerful themes of social justice with euphoric moments of spine-tingling sensuality. Urgent and affecting, it’s a film about life, death, passion, tragedy – and, above all, the will to survive.

You can read out 4.5 out of 5 review here.

For your chance to win 120 BPM on Blu-ray, answer the question below and fill in your details, then press submit! The competition closes on June 17th, 2018, so get answering and good luck. [Read more…]

Chris Hemsworth Gets Shirtless & Wet In The First Pics From Bad Times at The El Royale

June 3, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It wouldn’t be a Chris Hemsworth movie if he kept his shirt on the whole way through. Just so we don’t have to worry whether we’ll be getting a glimpse of Thor nipple in Bad Times at The El Royale, two of the first three pictures from the movie feature Chris’s rather pretty to look at torso.

Jeff Bridges, Russell Crowe, Dakota Johnson, Jon Hamm, Cynthia Erivo, and Nick Offerman also star in the movie, which sees, ‘Seven strangers, each with a secret to bury, meet at Lake Tahoe’s El Royale, a rundown hotel with a dark past. Over the course of one fateful night, everyone will have a last shot at redemption – before everything goes to hell.’

Drew Goddard (Cabin In The Woods) directs the 1969 set movie, which is due in cinemas in the Autumn. Click on the pics below for larger versions. [Read more…]

Tom Cruise Shares The First Pic From Top Gun 2

June 3, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For quite a few years there’s been talks of a second Top Gun movie. Indeed, it looked like it was nearing production with the director of the original, Tony Scott, at the helm. However, when Scott died the whole project got delayed.

Now though Tom Cruise is back on set for Top Gun: Maverick and to prove it he’s shared the first image from the movie, taken on the first day of shooting. Not much is known about the plot of the film, although there has been talk about it being another competition film, possibly between the new generation of drones and the old school fighter pilots like Cruise’s Maverick.

We should hear a lot more about it before it’s released in cinemas in July 2019. Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) is directing the movie.

My Friend Dahmer (Cinema Review) – The infamous gay serial killer as a teen

May 30, 2018 By George Elcombe Leave a Comment

Starring: Ross Lynch, Alex Wolff, Anne Heche
Director: Marc Meyers
Running Time: 107 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 1st 2018

Often I like to watch films that I know nothing about besides the title so that it doesn’t taint my viewing experience, but having seen this movie I feel that having prior knowledge of the protagonist’s horrific crimes would have enabled me to have gotten more out of this film.

Having grown up in England and not having an interest in serial killers, I had never really heard of Jeffrey Dahmer and the 17 men and boys he murdered between 1978 and 1991. I read his Wikipedia page after seeing this movie and it shed a lot of light upon things that were hinted at, both subtly and explicitly, throughout the film. [Read more…]

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (DVD Review) – Robbed of the Best Picture Oscar?

May 30, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Caleb Landry Jones, Lucas Hedges
Director: Martin McDonagh
Running Time: 110 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: Out Now

For many Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri seemed to be the smart bet to win the Best Picture Oscar. While The Shape Of Water had made the early running, Three Billboards gained momentum through the Award season and seemed like it might cruise to a victory. In the end it didn’t get the big gong, although it did win for the exceptionally strong performance of Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell. Many were also surprised it lost for writer/director Martin McDonagh’s screenplay, although it is a couple of issues with that screenplay that may be the reason it didn’t win the biggest award.

McDormand plays the hard-bitten Mildred, a woman filled with anger at the local police’s inability to catch whoever was responsible for the rape and murder of her daughter. To try and force the authorities into action she hires three billboards on a rural road, putting up massive posters asking why there have been no arrests and specifically calling out police chief Willoughby (Woody Harrelson). The Post (Blu-ray Review) – Spielberg, Streep & Hanks stand up for press freedom

May 30, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Sarah Paulson, Bob Odenkirk
Director: Steven Spielberg
Running Time: 111
Certificate: 12
Release Date: May 21st 2018 (UK)

He may be in his 70s but Steven Spielberg shows no signs of slowing down. He managed to slot in The Post while simultaneously making Ready Player One, something most directors half his age wouldn’t even contemplate let alone succeed at.

The Post is a bit of an old school flick, set in the 1970s and telling the story of the Pentagon Papers, a leaked set of documents that revealed that while in public the military and government was still positive about the war in Vietnam, privately many felt that it was unwinnable and that official finding bore this out. The authorities from President Richard Nixon downwards unsurprisingly didn’t want this made public, while the press felt it was imperative to publish it. [Read more…]
