Ferdinand (Blu-ray Review) – A little bit gay or just a load of old animated bull?

April 24, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: John Cena, Kate McKinnon, Bobby Cannavale, Anthony Anderson, David Tennant
Director: Carlos Saldahna
Running Time: 108 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: April 16th 2018 (UK)

I sometimes think the people who panic about ‘the gay agenda’ really ought to pay more attention to kids’ movies. If you’re looking for queer narrative – which never say they’re queer – you don’t have to look much further. For a start, nearly every animated movie revolves around the theme of being true to yourself. You also have numerous movies about parents finding it difficult to accept difference in their child, that child being a misfit who’s not the same as others and is often bullied for it, and who will eventually win by accepting themselves and being proud of it.

All that could just be coincidence, but then there are things such as the fact that a lot of animated movies consciously deal with ideas about chosen families, something you normally only hear about in a queer context. It was this that got me considering the queer side of Ferdinand. Partway though the film, the titular character is insisting the dog he grew up with is his ‘brother’, while the dog says he can’t be the family of a bull because that’s not the way things work. Ultimately that becomes the main theme of the movie – a bull rejecting the toxic masculinity that the other bovines believe is their only choice, and learning that you can choose your own way and your own family, and it doesn’t matter if others think it’s ‘queer’. Ellen Page Joins Laura Linney & Olympia Dukakis In Netflix’s Tales Of The City Revival

April 24, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last summer it was revealed that Netflix was hoping to revive Armistead Maupin’s Tales Of The City with original cast members Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis. Now a new 10-part Tales Of The City mini-series has officially been announced, which does indeed have both Linney and Dukakis attached, and Ellen Page have been announced to join them.

Based on Maupin’s novels and stories, Tales Of The City was first turned into a six-part limited series in 1992. That spawned two follow-ups, More Tales of the City in 1998, and Further Tales of the City in 2001. They have become iconic slices on LGBT entertainment, following gay, straight and trans characters in San Francisco, living and connected to Anna Madrigal’s legendary house at 28 Barbary Lane.

Netflix’s official release says of the new series, ‘Based on the books by Armistead Maupin, this next chapter – Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City – follows Mary Ann (Laura Linney), who returns home to San Francisco and is reunited with her daughter (Ellen Page) and ex-husband Brian, twenty years after leaving them behind to pursue her career. Fleeing the midlife crisis that her picture-perfect Connecticut life created, Mary Ann returns home to her chosen family and will quickly be drawn back into the orbit of Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis) and the residents of 28 Barbary Lane.

‘Academy Award nominee and Emmy-, SAG- and Golden Globe-Award winning actress Laura Linney and Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Olympia Dukakis will reprise their roles as Mary Ann Singleton and Anna Madrigal. Barbara Garrick also to return. Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG Award nominee Ellen Page will join the cast as Shawna.’

“I couldn’t be more excited about this new brand-new incarnation of Tales. It’s set in present-day San Francisco with all the joys and complications that might suggest for the residents of 28 Barbary Lane,’ comments Armistead Maupin. “Mrs. Madrigal’s tenants, both old and new, will be entangled in delicious new adventures and ever-expanding possibilities for love.”

“The magical, vivid world that Armistead Maupin built in Tales of the City is one that offered so many – particularly the LGBTQ+ community – a home for the first time. For many, Tales was the first time they saw themselves on screen,” said writer and showrunner Lauren Morelli. “I am humbled to now find my own home within Tales and to continue telling Armistead’s stories.”

Hard Paint Trailer – Take a look at the winner of the Berlin Film Festival LGBT Teddy Award

April 24, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hard Paint was this year’s winner of the prestigious Teddy Award at the Berlin Film Festival, given to the best LGBT movie screening in the competition. Now the film is preparing for its US release via Wolfe Video, who has released a new trailer.

Here’s the Teddy Award synopsis of the movie: ‘Pedro earns a living in chat rooms. The image resolution may not be perfect but when Pedro transforms himself into NeonBoy in front of the webcam he still manages to create the desired impression. Slowly, this young man dips his fingers into pots of coloured paint and glides them across his naked body. Glowing in the dark, NeonBoy follows his users’ commands until he agrees to meet one of them in a private chat room for money. But things change when Pedro’s sister Luzia moves out of their shared apartment and he notices that somebody is imitating his performances.

‘He agrees to go on a date with his mysterious rival. This rendezvous will have far-reaching consequences. As with all of the previous films by directing duo Filipe Matzembacher and Marcio Reolon, we find ourselves again in Porto Alegre in northern Brazil, where we encounter young queers in search of intimacy, community and security. The elegantly interwoven virtual images and protagonists’ stories may take us away from the real world, yet in actuality we remain in an increasingly homophobic Brazilian society to whose misfits this sensitive, affectionate portrait in three acts is dedicated.’ [Read more…]

April 24, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When Sony released a first teaser for their Venom movie in February, they probably weren’t expecting the, erm, venomous backlash they received. While their were complaints about all sorts of things, the ultimately boiled down to the fact they’d released a trailer that failed to actually show Venom.

Now they’ve decided it’s time to remedy that with a new trailer and poster.

Here’s the brief synopsis: ‘One of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award® nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.’ The movie also stars Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze and Reid Scott, with Ruben Fleischer directing.

The film will be in cinemas in October. [Read more…]

Win The Supernatural Horror Pyewacket On DVD!

April 23, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

To celebrate the home entertainment release of PYEWACKET available now on Digital HD and on DVD from the 23rd April 2018, we have a copy of the DVD up for grabs, courtesy of Signature Entertainment!

Forget teen-friendly jump scares and Ouija board pranks – this the real deal, that goes deep into the dark heart of the occult. From the producer of cult hits The Void and The Witch, PYEWACKET can take its place alongside those other-wordly modern horror classics.

Adam MacDonald, who directed the impressive killer bear thriller Backcountry, has crafted a deliciously taut slow burner, with outstanding central performances from Nicole Munoz as witchcraft-obsessed teenager Leah, and The Walking Dead’s Laurie Holden as her mother. As surprising as it is inventive, the film plants a seed of dread from the moment teenager Leah performs an occult ritual in the woods, building to an excruciating climax that will do for the woods what Jaws did for the water. Although there are nods to other genre favourites – thumps in the attic recall The Exorcist, the house in the woods The Evil Dead – PYEWACKET is its own bone-chilling beast.

With an ominous, brooding score (by Bring Me The Horizon’s Lee Malia), PYEWACKET is an unnerving, original terror experience that will delight fear fans in search of a genuine creep out. Take a deep breath and prepare for your nerves to be shattered…

For your chance to win Pyewacket on DVD, answer the question below and fill in your details, then press submit! The competition closes on May 7th, 2018, so get answering and good luck. [Read more…]

Taron Egerton Set To Play Elton John In Rocketman Biopic

April 22, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For the past few years Elton John and his hubby David Furnish have been working on a musical movie biopic of the singer’s life. Initially they had Ton Hardy on board for the central, but now he’s out and Taron Egerton is in, according to Variety.

John must have been impressed by the young star when they worked together on Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

There’s also been a change in the directors chair, with Dexter Fletcher (who’s just replaced Bryan Singer on the Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody) taking over from the previously attached Michael Gracey. It’s previously been reported that Lee Hall’s script will follow Elton John’s journey from 5-year old musical prodigy who by age 11 won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, to a young man who rebelled against his strict upbringing, wore outrageous costumes and became a global icon who teamed with songwriter Bernie Taupin to sell more records that just about any musical artist of his era. It will also feature some fantastical elements and plenty of the singer’s music, in keeping with John’s larger than life personality. It’ll shoot this summer.
