The Revenant Tops The Oscar Noms, With Carol, Danish Girl, Sam Smith Leading The LGBT Contingent

January 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

carol-cate-blanchett-rooney-maraAs always, a few days after the Golden Globes, the Oscar nominations have been announced, so that we can spend the next few weeks wondering who will win, before it’s announced on February 28th. As many expected, The Revenant got the most nods, with 12, followed by Mad Max: Fury Road with 10 – the duo also became only the fourth and fifth film ever to get nominations in all seven technical categories.

However, it was more a story of who wasn’t nominated, with that list including every black actor being shut out, Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg missing out in the director category (despite Scott picking up a Golden Globe at the weekend), Steve Jobs’ Aaron Sorkin and The Hateful Eight’s Quentin Tarantino failing to be acknowledge in the screenplay categories (again, Sorkin won a Globe), and Carol in the Best Picture category, despite the fact it had gone into the Awards Season as the favourite. Many are also wondering how Straight Outta Compton missed out on a Best Picture nomination – indeed there will hopefully be a bit of soul-searching considering there so much good work from black actors and filmmakers this year, but there’s been so little recognition of that at the Oscars.

The Revenant is definitely now the movie to beat though, with many believing it is now a shoo-in for the top prize. And while Leonardo DiCaprio infamously has a history of not winning Oscars, many believe this is his year, helped by a weaker than normal field (the others are Bryan Cranston for Trumbo, Matt Damon for The Martian,Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl).

There are also some suggesting that while it’s unlikely to win Best Picture, it’s Mad Max that could end up with the most wins overall, as it’s likely to do extremely well in the technical categories. It would be impressive if it did, especially considering it’s the fourth movie in a series that started way back in 1979. But then, it’s a year of big gaps, as Sylvester Stallone has nabbed the record for the longest time between nominations for playing the same character, with 39 between Rock and Creed (beating Paul Newman for the 25 years between The Hustler and The Color Of Money).

On the LGBT front, it’s Carol that leads the way, as while it lost out in the Best PIcture category, it did score six nominations, including Best Actress for Cate Blanchett and Best Supporting Actress for Rooney Mara. There was a near LGBT takeover of the Best Original Song category, with bisexual Lady Gaga joined by the gay Sam Smith and trans singer/songwriter Antony Hegarty (of Antony and the Johnsons). The Danish Girl got five noms, including the expected nods for Eddie Redmayne as trans pioneer Lili Elbe and Alicia Vikander as her wife.

Sadly though, while there were hopes that Mya Taylor and/or Kitana Kiki Rodriguez would become the first transgender actors ever nominated for an Oscar, the movie was completely shut out.

Take a look at the full list of nominees below. [Read more…]

Crush Of The Day: Daniel Radcliffe Is Shirtless, Hairy & Hot For Italian Vanity Fair

January 13, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

daniel-racliffe-vanity-fair1-slideI still find the general hotness of Daniel Radcliffe disturbing, as despite the fact he’s now in in his 20s, I can’t get the image of him as Harry Potter out of my head. However the new pics that feature in Italian Vanity Fair certainly help banish thoughts of boy wizards, as Dan is looking ripped, furry and extremely good looking.

He’s currently doing the rounds promoting the international releases on Victor Frankenstein and will also be seen this year in Now You See Me 2, Swiss Army Man and Imperium. However if he wants to stop making movies and just do photoshoots like this, I wouldn’t mind too much.

We’re certainly hoping that as a staunch ally to the LGBT community, he won’t mind us ogling us just a little bit (and thanks to Instinct for the tip). Take a look at the pics below.

Where Is Home? Documentary About Ugandan LGBT Asylum Seekers Needs Your Help

January 13, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

where-is-homeAs many know, Uganda is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be gay, and It’s not just the attempts to make ‘aggravated’ homosexuality a capital offence that have made it sobad. It’s also a society that from the ground up absolutely condemns LGBT people, to the point a newspaper infamously printed the names and pictures of people it alleged to be gay, knowing that it put their lives in danger.

Indeed, as Out reports, Ugandan Filmmaker and Activist Kamoga Hassan attempted to make a film about one of those people, but it ‘lost its entire initial cast because the themes were too controversial’. Thankfully he eventually completed it and ‘Outed’ became a festival success. Now though he’s hoping to making another film, Where Is Home?, about LGBT Ugandan asylum seekers. He’s seeking $3,000 to ‘obtain the proper video equipment to facilitate the interviews as well as the shots of Uganda to capture the themes of this story’, which Kamoga hopes to buy this month before his return to Uganda.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Filmmaker and Human Rights Activist Kamoga Hassan comes a new documentary film. “Where is Home?” follows the stories of LGBT Ugandans seeking asylum in foreign countries to escape the persecution they face in their own.

‘“Where is home?” explores what is left behind when you have to leave everything you’ve known because of who you are. It is estimated that the plight of persecution of LGBT throughout the world has left hundreds fleeing their communities to seek a life in a more open society where they hope to be accepted for who they are.

‘“Where is home?” explores the triumphs and joys of being accepted into a new society but also contrasts the struggles of home sickness and cultural identity asking the ultimate question “Where is home?”’

Take a look at the fundraising video below and head over to Kickstarter to help out. [Read more…]

Modern Family’s Ariel Winter Isn’t Ready To Forgive Nash Grier For Homophobia

January 13, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ariel-winter-nash-grierWhile Nash Grier has gained a lot of fans (as Towleroad points out he has 2.4 Vine followers, 5.25 million Twitter followers and 4.6 million Youtube subscribers), it looked like his career as an internet star was in danger of coming crashing down around him after an old video of him using the word ‘fag’ in a particularly obnoxious way resurfaced.

He quickly apologised and made a few efforts to atone, such as posing for a NoH8 phot. Many of his fans soon forgot, despite numerous other problematic things that have spouted from his mouth, suggesting he hasn’t really thought about what he’s doing at all, and only care when someone calls him out on it.

One person who’s certainly not ready to give him a free pass is Modern Family star Ariel Winter, who seems to have initially started thinking about Nash last weekend due to the emergence of the hastag #FavNashVid. She wrote on Twitter: ‘#FavNashVid that one time when he was just super homophobic and ignorant? #whydoyouhavefans.’

She then posted a longer note explaining why she doesn’t think we should just overlook Grier’s indiscretions:

In response to @Nashgrier from my last post… pic.twitter.com/aV8bRYYOa1

— Ariel Winter (@arielwinter1) January 10, 2016

Nash then apparently tried to reach out to her to take the conversation offline, but she apparently wasn’t interested:

Money Monster Trailer – George Clooney & Julia Roberts are taken hostage by Jack O’Connell

January 13, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

money-monster-trailer-slideGeorge Clooney and Julia Roberts are teaming up again for the drama/thriller Money Monster, and they’re bringing on Jack O’Connell for the ride. And as this is Clooney, you shouldn’t be too surprised that the movie tries to mix entertainment with a few social issues.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the taut and tense thriller Money Monster, Lee Gates (George Clooney) is a bombastic TV personality whose popular financial network show has made him the money wiz of Wall Street. But after he hawks a high tech stock that mysteriously crashes, an irate investor (Jack O’Connell) takes Gates, his crew, and his ace producer Patty Fenn (Julia Roberts) hostage live on air. Unfolding in real time, Gates and Fenn must find a way to keep themselves alive while simultaneously uncovering the truth behind a tangle of big money lies.’

The film will be out in the US in March, but won’t reach the UK until May. Take a look at the first trailer below.

Submissions Open For 2016’s Iris Prize LGBT Short Film Festival

January 12, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

2016-iris-prize-submissionsIt’s still the most valuable LGBT short film festival prize in the worls and now the Iris Prize Festival has sent out a call for submissions for its 2016 edition. The main prize, for Best Short Film, is worth £30,000, while Best British Short has raised its value from £14,000 to £20,000, thanks to the support of Pinewood Studios Group.

“We are delighted that Pinewood Studios has generously increased their support of the Iris Prize Best British Short. Together with the continued funding from The Michael Bishop Foundation, Gorilla Post and Martin Briggs we now have a total prize fund of £55,000. This significant fund, at a time of continued austerity, allows Iris to continue supporting new LGBT film making,” said Festival Chair Andrew Pierce.

The organisers also confirmed that the family of partner festivals, who each nominate one short film to compete for the Iris Prize, will be increased by five in 2016. LGBT film festivals who would like to be considered should contact festival organisers as soon as possible.

“Thanks to the generous support of The Michael Bishop Foundation, the Iris Prize continues to be the only LGBT short film prize in the world which allows the winner to make a new film. Iris is more than just a trophy that gathers dust or a certificate that yellows on the wall. Iris is what film makers need – funding, support and guidance,” said Festival Director Berwyn Rowlands.

“Seven short films have been produced to date by the Iris Prize with award winning filmmakers from across the world. Followers directed by Tim Marshall, the 6th short film produced by the Iris Prize, was selected from 8,200 entries to premier at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. The film has now played in over 50 festivals worldwide over the past 12 months.”

“I’m very proud of our track record in supporting new talent, having worked with film makers from all over the world and look forward to working with Arkasha Stevenson from the US who will be responsible for the 8th short film,” he added.

The Iris Prize Festival takes place from 12th-16th October 2016 in Cardiff. Details about submitting films can be found here: http://www.irisprize.org/the-prize-2016/submissions/

Teen Wolf’s Charlie Carver Reveals He’s Gay In Heartfelt Essay

January 12, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

charlie-carver-teen-wolfWhile it’s been a fairly open secret for some time, Charlie Carver, one half of the werewolf twins from Teen Wolf, has come out as gay in a multi-part essay he penned on Instagram. Carver was first seen in Desperate Housewives, before finding further success in Teen Wolf, The Leftovers, and more recently, the gay-themed movie I Am Michael.

Carver’s heartfelt words read: Pt 1: “Be who you needed were younger”. About a year ago, I saw this photo while casually scrolling through my Instagram one morning. I’m not one for inspirational quotes, particularly ones attributed to “Mx Anonymous”- something mean in me rebukes the pithiness of proverbs, choosing to judge them as trite instead of possibly-generally-wise, resonant, or helpful. And in the case of the good ol’ Anonymous kind, I felt that there was something to be said for the missing context. Who wrote or said the damn words? Why? And to/for who in particular?

Nonetheless, I screen-capped the picture and saved it. It struck me for some reason, finding itself likeable enough to join the ranks of the “favorites” album on my phone. I’d see it there almost daily, a small version of it next to my other “favorites”; I’d see it every time I checked into the gym, pulled up a picture of my insurance cards, my driver’s license…. Important Documents. And over the course of about-a-year, it became clear why the inspirational photo had called out to me.

As a young boy, I knew I wanted to be an actor. I knew I wanted to be a lot of things! I thought I wanted to be a painter, a soccer player, a stegosaurus… But the acting thing stuck. It was around that age that I also knew, however abstractly, that I was different from some of the other boys in my grade.

Over time, this abstract “knowing” grew and articulated itself through a painful gestation marked by feelings of despair and alienation, ending in a climax of saying three words out loud: “I am gay”. I said them to myself at first, to see how they felt. They rang true, and I hated myself for them. I was twelve. It would take me a few years before I could repeat them to anyone else, in the meantime turning the phrase over and over in my mouth until I felt comfortable and sure enough to let the words pour out again, this time to my family…

Pt 2: For anyone who can identify with that experience (and I think we all can to some degree; saying something from a place of integrity, owning and declaring oneself), the immediate and comingling sense of relief and dread might sound familiar to you. For me, and my family, it was a precious conversation, one where I felt that I’d begun to claim myself, my life, and what felt like the beginning of a very-adult-notion of my own Authenticity. For that, and for them, I am forever grateful. *Note “Coming Out” is different for everyone. You can always Come Out to yourself. Coming Out as Gay/Bi/Trans/Non-Binary/Yourself or What-Have-You is at first a personal and private experience. If you’re ready and feel safe, then think about sharing this part of yourself with others. I recognize that I was born with an immense amount of privilege, growing up in a family where my orientation was celebrated and SAFE. If you feel like you want to Come Out, make sure first and foremost that you have a support system and will be safe. I would never encourage anyone to Come Out only to find themselves in harm’s way – a disproportionate number of Homeless American (and Global) Youth are members of the LGBTQ community who were kicked out of their families and homes out of hate and prejudice. It is a major issue in-and-of itself, and a situation not worth putting oneself at risk for.

The more I adjusted to living outwardly in this truth, the better I felt. But my relationship to my sexuality soon became more complicated. The acting thing HAD stuck, and at nineteen I started working in Hollywood. It was a dream come true, one I had been striving for since boyhood. But coupled with the overwhelming sense of excitement was an equally overwhelming feeling of dread- I would “have to” bisect myself into two halves, a public and private persona, the former vigilantly monitored, censored, and sterilized of anything that could reveal how I self-identified in the latter.

I had my reasons, some sound and some nonsensical. I do believe in a distinction between one’s professional life and their private one…

Pt 3: After the first episode of television I shot went to air, it became clear to me that I was at least no longer anonymous. For the first time, I found myself stopped on the street, asked to take a picture by a complete stranger – part of the job I had willingly signed up for.

Fame, to whatever degree, is a tricky creature. In this day and age, particularly with the access offered by social media, it demands that you be On, that you be Yourself, Always, in your work and to your fans. In this way, the distinction between public and private has become blurry, begging questions like “to what extent do I share myself? Do what extent do I have to?” When it came to this differentiation of public/private, I was of the opinion that my sexuality could stay off the table. While my Coming Out was very important for me, I wanted to believe in a world where one’s sexuality was for the most part irrelevant. That it didn’t “matter,” or that at least it was something that didn’t need to or ideally shouldn’t ever have to be announced to a stranger, a new colleague, an interviewer. Even the words “Coming Out” bothered me.

I took issue with them insofar as that “Coming Out” implied being greeted with attention, attention for something I would prefer to be implicitly just Human, an attribute or adjective that was only part of how I saw my whole self. I did not want to be defined by my sexuality. Sure, I am a proud gay man, but I don’t identify as a Gay man, or a GAY man, or just gay. I identify as a lot of things, these various identifications and identities taking up equal space and making up an ever-fluid sense of Self.

Furthermore, as an actor, I believed that my responsibility to the craft and the business was to remain benevolently neutral – I was a canvas, a chameleon, the next character. For the most part I had a duty to stay a Possibility in the eye of casting, directors, and the public. If I Came Out, I feared I would be limiting myself to a type, to a perception with limits that I was not professionally comfortable with. And I created in my imagination an Industry that was just as rigid in this belief as well.

Pt 4: After having the privilege of playing a range of characters, gay, straight and otherwise, I realize this is not the case. Things in this business have changed and will continue to. Thank GOD. I know that because of all of the brave men and women who’ve come out, self-identified, or couldn’t have possibly ever been “In”. So to them, I am also forever grateful.

But then I saw that little photo on Instagram. Well, in truth, it had found me long after I’d made up my mind to write something like this. There were so many drafts and plans, none of them ever getting off the ground. So I bided my time, justifying the silence with the fact that I hadn’t really ever been “in”. I tried to live as authentically as I’ve known how to, as a gay guy, since that concept became available to me, only once or twice intentionally dodging the ever ill-timed question with the subtext that might have as well read “ARE YOU GAY???” I’ve lived “out,” not feeling the need to announce so. I was comfortably out in my private life. And for a time, that was enough.

Things change. There’s a lot about the Now that I’m very excited about these days. I feel like more and more people, particularly young people, are striving to create a safe world for each other. We’re learning new vocabularies to help others feel heard when they try and articulate their perceived “otherness”- words like cis- and trans-, non-binary, fluid… We’re together exploring the possibilities of the Social Media Frontier, experimenting with new ways to connect, galvanize, and awaken. I get fucking MOVED every time I hear a high school voted in their transgender classmate as Prom King or Prom Queen, or when I see Twitter afire with outrage over mistreatment, brutality, and injustice. But I also mourn over what feels like a lot of anger and righteous indignance. I long for the world to be simple, for everyone to feel happy and safe in who they are as individuals and members of a community. I can only hope that the beginning of this unrest is productive, something our generation(s) is moving through in order to end up someplace better.

Pt 5: But what can I do? How can I participate? Honesty is probably a great step in the right direction. I now believe that by omitting this part of myself from the record, I am complicit in perpetuating the suffering, fear, and shame cast upon so many in the world. In my silence, I’ve helped decide for to you too that to be gay is to be, as a young man (or young woman, young anyone), inappropriate for a professional career in the Arts (WHAAA???) So now, let the record show this- I self-identify as gay. And does that really matter anymore? As a young man, I needed a young man in Hollywood to say that- and without being a dick about it, I owe it to myself, more than anything, to be who I needed when I was younger.

Happy 2016, and all my best to you and yours in the year ahead.

And let the record show my twin brother is just as cool for being straight.

Much love,
C

New Hail, Caesar! Trailer – Ralph Fiennes wants Alden Ehrenreich to be a better actor in the Coen’s star-studded flick

January 12, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hail-caesar-quadWhile many had expected the Coen Brothers’ Hail, Caesar! to be making an Oscar run, it’s been slightly pushed back, but it still looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun. If nothing else their look back at the Golden Age of Hollywood has one hell of a cast.

A new trailer has now arrived, which tells us little about the plot, but certainly gives us a feel for quirky tone we can expect.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Four-time Oscar®-winning filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen (No Country for Old Men, True Grit, Fargo) write and direct Hail, Caesar!, an all-star comedy set during the latter years of Hollywood’s Golden Age.  Starring Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, Jonah Hill and Frances McDormand, Hail, Caesar! follows a single day in the life of a studio fixer who is presented with plenty of problems to fix.’

The film will be in UK cinemas on March 4th.

Ridley Scott Circling Movie Version Of Classic TV Show The Prisoner

January 12, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ridley-scott

The 1967 sci-fi show The Prisoner only ran for one season of 17 episodes, but it’s left an indelible mark on popular culture. For several years Universal has been trying to work out what they can do with the property. After a mediocre miniseries didn’t catch people’s imaginations they’ve been working on a movie version.

Now it may have got a major bump up, as Deadline reports that none other than Ridley Scott is in early talks to helm it. It may well become his next movie after the upcoming Alien: Covenant.

The 1967 show followed Patrick Magoohan’s No. 6, who is taken and placed in a strange community full of other mysterious figures who seem to removed from society byecause they know too much (No.6 himself has recently resigned from a government role). However, he has no real idea why he’s there, who has taken him, and soon discovers that if he tries to escape a large white ball comes along to keep him contained.

Several top writer have already worked on the screenplay, including Christopher McQuarrie and William Monahan. It’s believed several more are jockeying to be given a crack at it, and numerous actors have also expressed an interest in the central role, although no names have been announced as yet.
