Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials Trailer – Dylan O’Brien finds his troubles have only just begun

May 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

maze-runner-scorch-trials-poster1Before The Maze Runner was released, many thought it was just a Hunger Games rip-off that was destined to fail. However it proved the naysayers wrong by becoming a hit and by being a pretty good movie that more than deserves a sequel.

Anyone who saw that first film will know that by necessity the follow-up will be rather different, and now we can take our first look at The Scorch Trials, which takes us out of the maze but continues many of the mysteries.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In this next chapter of the epic “Maze Runner” saga, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and his fellow Gladers face their greatest challenge yet: searching for clues about the mysterious and powerful organization known as WCKD. Their journey takes them to the Scorch, a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles. Teaming up with resistance fighters, the Gladers take on WCKD’s vastly superior forces and uncover its shocking plans for them all.’

It’ll be in UK cinemas on September 18th. [Read more…]

New Pixels Trailer – Adam Sandler & co. must save the world from videogames

May 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pixels-slide1Pixels is a bit of a wildcard for this summer season, hoping that audiences will be hungry for some effects driven comedy, despite a rather mixed record for that type of movie. It is based on a neat concept though and has a good cast.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘As kids in the 1980s, Sam Brenner (Adam Sandler), Will Cooper (Kevin James), Ludlow Lamonsoff (Josh Gad), and Eddie “The Fire Blaster” Plant (Peter Dinklage) saved the world thousands of times – at 25 cents a game in the video arcades. Now, they’re going to have to do it for real. In Pixels, when intergalactic aliens discover video feeds of classic arcade games and misinterpret them as a declaration of war, they attack the Earth, using the video games as the models for their assaults — and now-U.S. President Cooper must call on his old-school arcade friends to save the world from being destroyed by PAC-MAN, Donkey Kong, Galaga, Centipede, and Space Invaders. Joining them is Lt. Col. Violet Van Patten (Michelle Monaghan), a specialist supplying the arcaders with unique weapons to fight the aliens.’

The movie will be in UK cinemas. [Read more…]

New Pan Trailer – Hugh Jackman & Garrett Hedlund head for Neverland

May 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pan-poster3When the first Pan trailer arrived last November it was the start of a campaign that was supposed to see the movie arrive in cinemas this July. However Warner decided that as it had a pretty packed summer it would move it back to October, and so this new trailer is essentially trying to start up the hype all over again.

The promo suggests this will be a more traditional family fantasy than some of the darker takes on classic tales we’ve had recently, although I’m hoping that by the time it reaches cinemas the CGI won’t look quite Polar Express animation.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Offering a new take on the origin of the classic characters created by J.M. Barrie, the action adventure follows the story of an orphan who is spirited away to the magical Neverland. There, he finds both fun and dangers, and ultimately discovers his destiny—to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter Pan.

‘The film stars Oscar® nominee Hugh Jackman (“Les Misérables”) as Blackbeard; Garrett Hedlund (“Inside Llewyn Davis”) as Hook; Oscar® nominee Rooney Mara (“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) as Tiger Lily; Adeel Akhtar (“The Dictator”) as Smee; and newcomer Levi Miller as Peter. Amanda Seyfried (“Les Misérables”) rounds out the cast as Mary, alongside Jack Charles (“Mystery Road”) as The Chief/Tiger Lily’s father; Taejoo Na (“The Kick”) as Kwahu; Nonso Anozie (“Son of God,” “Atonement”) as Bishop; Kathy Burke (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”) as Mother Barnabas; Kurt Egyiawan (“Skyfall”) as Murray; Lewis MacDougall (UK TV’s “In the Name of the Children”) as Nibs; and newcomer Leni Zieglmeier as Wendy Darling.

‘PAN is released in UK cinemas 16 October 2015’ [Read more…]

First Official Warcraft Pics Introduce Rob Kazinsky’s Ogrim Doomhammer

May 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

warcraft-pic1-slideIt’s nearly a year since Warcraft finished shooting and also just over a year until its released, but now the first official pic from the upcoming adaptation of the hit videogame has arrived, which suggests the filmmakers are already well on the way to creating a gigantic fantasy world.

The two pics are of a fully CGI character, Ogrin Doomhammer, who’s been motion captured by Robert Kazinsky (Pacific Rim, True Blood) before being given a bit more bulk as the leader of the orcs by Industrial Light & Magic.

Not too much is known about the plot, although it’s rumoured it’s about the first meeting between orcs and humans, who become sworn enemies as different races of fantasy creatures band together to form the two faction, The Horde and The Alliance.

Duncan Jones directs with a June 2016 release set.

Orange Is The New Black – Season 2 (Blu-ray Review)

May 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Taylor Schilling, Laura Prepon, Laverne Cox, Uzo Aduba, Natasha Lyonne
Director: Various
Running Time: 780 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 18th 2015 (UK)

When Season 1 of Orange Is The New Black debuted on Netflix it proved that House Of Cards wasn’t a fluke and that the streaming service could compete with the US TV networks in terms of quality. However it was noticeable that while it was entertaining, it sometimes felt like its best characters were given short shrift, while the less interesting ones got all the screen time.

They seem to have realised that as with Season 2 the show manages to far better integrate the likes of the majestic Laverne Cox’s Sophia (although she’s still not in it enough), and Uzo Aduba’s ‘Crazy Eyes’. Indeed the show gives Uzo so much room to showcase her talents that she won an Emmy. It’s great that in a rare show that’s peopled almost completely by women, Orange Is The New Black has grown the confidence to realise that it has enough great characters that any of them can carry the story. A Most Violent Year (Blu-ray Review)

May 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Oscar Isaac, Jessica Chastain, David Oyelowo, Elyes Gabel, Albert Brooks
Director: J.C. Chandor
Running Time: 125 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 18th 2015 (UK)

A Most Violent Year is one of those movies where, with stronger marketing, it could have gained traction during the awards season, perhaps not winning much but certainly getting more than just one Golden Globe nomination (a Supporting Actress nod for Jessica Chastain).

Director JC Chandor impressed many with his look at the start of the financial crash in Margin Call, and also with his almost dialogue-free Robert Redford alone-at-sea movie, All Is Lost. In many respects A Most Violent Year is a more tradition movie than either of those films, but it’s still extremely stylish and accomplished. [Read more…]

Unzipped Episodes 1-5 – Take a look at HIV Equal Online’s new gay-themed web series

May 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

unzipped-pic1There are quite a lot of LGBT-friendly web series out there, however relatively few of them have properly dealt with the issues around being HIV+.

Now though there’s Unzipped, directed by Tyler Curry and coming from HIV Equal Online, a documentary web series where nine guys talk about their experiences of sex, love and HIV.

The first five episodes have now been released, which look at everything from first gay experiences and what makes sex good, to dealing with issues such as broken condoms, and the things about HIV that scare the men involved.

It’s well worth a look, starting out relatively light and funny before moving onto more serious issues, while never getting too bogged down in angst and misery. You can take a look at epiodes 1-5 below, along with the first episode of Unzipped In Depth, which takes things a little deeper, with Eric talking about behing HIV+ in NYC. [Read more…]

Cate Blanchett’s Lesbian-Themed Drama Carol Tipped For Cannes Palm d’Or

May 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Carol-cate-blanchett-slideThere have been mixed fortunes for films at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, with Gus Van Sant’s Sea Of Trees, starring Matthew McConaughey, being met with boos, while Todd Haynes’ lesbian-themed Carol, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, is getting huge buzz.

Variety is already saying the film may be one of the frontrunners at next year’s Oscar, remaking that early reaction to the movie ‘were some of the strongest of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival’.

Many are backing that sentiment, with Sasha Stone of Awards Daily commenting, “Weinstein is right in saying ‘Carol’ has the stuff. I think Hollywood will finally give Haynes the directing nod he so richly deserves. Rooney’s movie as much as Blanchett’s. Exceptional in every respect.”

Indiewire’s Anne Thompson meanwhile tweeted, “Blanchett & Mara carry Todd Haynes’ 50s lesbian romance Carol with glamorous allure. Strong contender for awards @cannes15 & beyond.”

The BBC meanwhile says the movie is ‘tipped for Cannes glory’.

While the film has been getting a brilliant response, Blanchett herself has stepped forward to clarify comments that many (incuding ourselves) took to suggest she was bisexual.

In a piece published in Variety last week, when asked about whether she had had relationships with women, Cate answered “Yes. Many times.” However it turns out this wasn’t all she said.

At a Cannes press conference she noted, “From memory, the conversation ran, ‘Have you had relationships with women?’ And I said, ‘Yes, many times. If you mean I’ve had sexual relationships with them, the answer is ‘No’ – but that obviously didn’t make it to print.

“Call me old-fashioned but I thought one’s job as an actor was not to present one’s boring, small, microscopic universe but to make a psychological connection to another character’s experiences. My own life is of no interest to anyone else. Or maybe it is. But I certainly have no interest in putting my own thoughts and opinions out there.”

Carol is about the relationship between two women in 1950s New York. One is a young department store clerk, Therese (Rooney Mara), who dreams of a better life, and the other is the older Carol (Cate Blanchett), who is trapped in a loveless marriage. However Carol’s husband (Kyle Chandler) begins to suspect what is happening. Playwright Phyllis Nagy wrote the screenplay adaptation.

It’s due for release in the US in December, which should set it up nicely for a strong Oscar run.

Steve Jobs Teaser – First look at Michael Fassbender as the Apple co-founder

May 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

steve-jobs-pic1Now that everyone has pretty much forgotten about the Steve Jobs biopic starring Ashton Kutcher it’s time for another, slightly more official one, with Michael Fassbender in the lead role and a script by Aaron Sorkin. And with Danny Boyle behind the camera, it should be an interesting one.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set backstage at three iconic product launches and ending in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac, Steve Jobs takes us behind the scenes of the digital revolution to paint an intimate portrait of the brilliant man at its epicenter.

‘Steve Jobs is directed by Academy Award® winner Danny Boyle and written by Academy Award® winner Aaron Sorkin, working from Walter Isaacson’s best-selling biography of the Apple founder. The producers are Mark Gordon, Guymon Casady of Film 360, Scott Rudin and Academy Award® winner Christian Colson.

‘Michael Fassbender plays Steve Jobs, the pioneering founder of Apple, with Academy Award®-winning actress Kate Winslet starring as Joanna Hoffman, former marketing chief of Macintosh. Steve Wozniak, who co-founded Apple, is played by Seth Rogen, and Jeff Daniels stars as former Apple CEO John Sculley. Manglehorn Trailer – Al Pacino finds new life in older age with Holly Hunter

May 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

manglehorn-slideIn the last few years it’s felt Al Pacino has been on autopilot, taking on any old movie that will stump up his paycheque and then coasting through the movie while putting in relatively little effort. However it seems he might be showing a bit more spark in 2015 with Danny Collins and Manglehorn.

The trailer for the latter has now arrived, which you can watch below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A.J. Manglehorn (Pacino) is a reclusive Texas key-maker who spends his days caring for his cat, finding comfort in his work and lamenting a long-lost love. Enter kindhearted bank teller Dawn (Holly Hunter), whose interest in the eccentric Manglehorn may just be able to draw him out of his shell. Chris Messina costars in this remarkably rich and humorous tale of second chances.’

David Gordon Green directs the film, which should be out later this year. [Read more…]

Matt Bomer Joins The Magnificent Seven Remake

May 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matt-bomerThe remake of The Magnificent Seven has certainly picked up speed in the last few weeks, with director Antoine Fuqua filling up the cast with all sorts of interesting names. Now he’s added another, as Matt Bomer has joined the movie, according to THR.

The Seven themselves will be Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Luke Grimes, Wagner Moura, Byung-hun Lee and Vincent D’Onofrio, who are hired by a young woman (Haley Bennett), to protect a town and it’s nearby gold mine from a wild west villain and his henchmen (which includes Jason Momoa).

Bomer has signed up to play Bennett’s husband, so there’s a good chance he’s going to be in some mortal peril.

The movie is due to start shooting soon with a January 2017 release set.
