It Takeis Two: Episode 3 – George Takei helps his hubby adjust to the limelight

May 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

it-takeis-two-ep3Brad & George Takei have been together for decades, but even after George came out as gay in 2005, Brad largely stayed out of the public eye. However with their marriage, George’s social media popularity and the documentary To Be Takei, Brad’s public profile has grown and he’s now dealing with his own fame.

The heightened reality web series takes a look at this, with the first two episodes seeing Brad getting angry about the fact anonymous internet people have created a ‘mean meme’ about him. While George is philosophical about that, Brad won’t take it lying down.

Now episode 3 has arrived, which sees George trying to help Brad with his newfound popularity, and Brad thinking about whether he has any responsibility he has to his fans. You can take a look below. [Read more…]

Jane Fonda Remembers Being The Ultimate Beard For Closeted Famous Gay Men

May 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jane-fondaWith Jane Fonda’s new Netflix series, Grace & Frankie debuting, the actress has been chatting with Pridesource about the show, which sees her and Lily Tomlin playing women dealing with the fact their husbands (Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) have both come out of the closet and run off with one another.

Although Fonda hasn’t experienced quite that scenario, she does have plenty of knowledge of gay men wanting her as both their beard and perhaps as heir attempt at heterosexuality. She says, “When I was young, I was the female that gay guys wanted to try to become heterosexual with. A very famous actor who’s gay – and I will not name names – asked me to marry him. I was very flattered, but I said, ‘Why?’ This was 1964. He wasn’t the only one. It’s very interesting. And I lived for two years with a guy who was trying to become heterosexual.”

It’s perhaps not surprising gay gays were attracted to Fonda, as in the 60s and 70s it was still difficult to be openly gay, especially if you were famous, but Jane was well known for her liberal, progressive views, which included campaigning for gay rights alongside Harvel Milk.

Of him, she says, “He was always smiling and laughing, and he was beloved and he was funny. I was so happy when I was with him. And it was just so much fun going into those gay bars with him – oh my God!”

You can find the full interview over at Pridesource.

Take A Look At Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight – Kurt Russell, Tim Roth & More

May 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hateful-eight-ew-pic3After throwing his toys out of the pram and saying he wasn’t go to make the movie, due to a script leak, Quentin Tarantino changed his mind and The Hateful Eight is now in the can and heading for a Christmas release.

To help prepare us EW has given us a look at the eight of the title, Kurt Russell, Tim Roth, Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demian Bichir, Michael Madsen and Bruce Dern. It’s certainly a mix of old and new faces for Tarantino, and there’s also a small turn in the movie for Channing Tatum.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In THE HATEFUL EIGHT, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all…’ [Read more…]

Gay Short Film Showcase: Teaser – An avant garde look at a young gay man’s drug use

May 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

teaser-short-filmA few months ago we published a short promo for Teaser. Now the short film has been released online, revealing a rather avant garde short, which gives an impressionistic look at the journey of drug dependence for a young, gay man, based on the real-life experiences of its director, Adam Jones.

Adam has written a piece for us, talking about the imagery in the short. You can read that below, and the film itself is underneath that:

The cover art for the short film is a young girl watching a television special, a demonic hand shadows above her; the perfect fit for my project. The film opens with a burst of static, my videos always seem to lend to this type of thing. The opening really was a playful type of approach to the story. My story is wild, why not be hopping on a bed flipping my hair around? Well… it just fits. During the time I encountered my rock bottom I let a tweaker shave my hair off. I had a Britney moment, but I needed a drastic change in my appearance to figure out who I was. The next cut is driving to Woodside Apartments off of Fulton Ave in Sacramento, CA. I spent a good 9 months of tweaking at this complex. I revisited the apartment number, routes I would usually spend walking for hours. We shot it in a dream-like sequence, on 8mm filters. Definitely gave me chills being at this location. My worst times were spent here, I was so confused. After we shot some footage my boyfriend and I jumped in the heated pool.

The next cut was definitely in a darker direction. Over the last 3 months, I edited the short film in an odd fashion. Every 2 weeks I would edit a 2 minute segment. Going to a location and shooting some footage, then pulling a few missing pieces from stock footage.

Taking a break for a couple weeks and revisiting the footage when I had the vision again.

For this specific cut, “The Path to Destruction” I wanted to capture a path to darkness. I went in a montage route for this because I could say many things within 2 seconds.

The score was the most important part for the story, I researched so many composers. I love setting videos to orchestra… to me it’s my favorite part.  This scene represents losing yourself to the devil; it’s my path to madness. Being consumed by other broken men like I once was.

So we made it to 05:25, running away from my issues. All the imagery really lends itself to the point of no return. The audio is a recording of a few treatment centers I attempted to contact in the past. No matter how bad it got I really thought that my life was better outside of treatment. The visuals I show really symbolically represent that life is horrible for me outside of a recovery center. The Amy Winehouse remix is a bit of a cliché.

The film begins to climax with a clip of a distraught mother. The black shadow under the young mans eyes really show the family dynamic happening here. My mom is searching for answers; I’ve reached my rock bottom. The “fun” is over; we think that we may have found an answer. The black and white theme fades; Napa, CA, the beautiful scenery, the vibrant colors of the hills. Driving to Azure Acres Treatment Center was such a beautiful & spiritual time for me. I spread my arms wide over a heaven-like CGI effect.

I’m free.

Spooks: The Greater Good (Cinema Review)

May 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Kit Harington, Peter Finch, Tim McInnerey, Elyes Gabel, Tuppence Middleton
Director: Bhalla Alluri
Running Time: 110 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 8th 2015 (UK)

Having never seen the TV series I had no real expectations of the film version, or real knowledge, other than it is something to do with spies and MI5. It’s with great pleasure to report then that as a stand-alone spy movie, Spooks: The Greater Good works. It’s tense, looks great, pacy and well acted, satisfying on pretty much every level, as a decent espionage thriller should. It taps into our current fears of attack from abroad, especially ISIS, at times almost painfully so. It’s also the first film for ages to use its London locations to great effect without making everything look cheesy.

It begins with a great set piece. The most wanted terrorist in the world is being transported across London, but the armoured van is stuck in a pesky traffic jam. Out of nowhere come armed motorbike riders to free him. They know that watching in MI5 headquarters is Peter Finch, and tell him, either free the man or lots of innocent people will die. Finch lets the man go. [Read more…]

Sense8 Trailer – Take a look at the Wachowskis’ Netflix series (with a bit of LGBT interest)

May 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

sense8-trailer2Andy and Lana Wachowski haven’t been having too much luck on the big screen, with the likes of Speed Racer, Cloud Atlas and Jupiter Ascending underperforming. However there’s high hopes for their new series Sense8, which brings a splash on high concept sci-fi to Netflix’s original shows.

You can take a look at the trailer below, which certainly has shades of The Matrix about it.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘One moment links 8 minds in disparate parts of the world, putting 8 strangers in each other’s lives, each other’s secrets, and in terrible danger. From the unparalleled creative minds of The Wachowskis (“The Matrix” trilogy, “Cloud Atlas”) and J. Michael Straczynski (Clint Eastwood’s “Changeling,” “World War Z”), as well as Grant Hill (“The Matrix” trilogy, “Cloud Atlas”).

‘The international cast includes: Brian J. Smith, Tuppence Middleton, Jamie Clayton, Miguel Angel Silvestre, Tina Desai, Doona Bae, Aml Ameen and Max Riemelt. Also, Daryl Hannah, Naveen Andrews, Terrence Mann, Freema Agyeman, Alfonso Herrera, Erendira Ibarra, Adam Shapiro, Ness Bautista and Joe Pantoliano. Unlike anything seen on television before, Sense8 pushes the boundaries in style, scope and story. For more information about #Sense8, follow the series on Twitter.’

Briefly hinted at with a shot of a bisexual orgy, the show does include some LGBT interest, including a gay couple, Lito (Miguel Ángel Silvestre) and Hernando (Alfonso Herrera), with the former being an actor keen to keep his sexuality secret, including enlisting a woman to publicly act as his beard. There are also hints in the trailer that the characters being linked together will mean the series takes a look at gender identity.

The show premieres in Netflix June 5th. [Read more…]

Vacation Red Band Trailer – Chris Hemsworth has something big in his pant to show us (NSFW)

May 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Vacation-Teaser-PosterWhen the trailer for the Vacation reboot was unveiled to a select audience at Cinemacon that main thing that people mentioned was how it featured Chris Hemsworth’s massive, ahem, package (or at least his massive prosthetic). Now we can take a peek for ourselves – although as you’ve probably guessed this red band trailer in NSFW – as well as the return of Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo, as they join son Rusty (Ed Helms) and his family on a new trip.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The next generation of Griswolds is at it again. “Vacation,” starring Ed Helms (“The Hangover” films) and Christina Applegate (the “Anchorman” films), takes the family on the road for another ill-fated adventure. The film marks Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley’s directorial debut.
Following in his father’s footsteps and hoping for some much-needed family bonding, a grown-up Rusty Griswold (Helms) surprises his wife, Debbie (Applegate), and their two sons with a cross-country trip back to America’s “favorite family fun park,” Walley World.

‘Rounding out the cast are Leslie Mann (“The Other Woman”) as Rusty’s sister, Audrey; Chris Hemsworth (the “Thor” films) in the role of Stone Crandall, Rusty’s irritatingly successful brother-in-law; and Skyler Gisondo (“Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb,” “Hard Sell”) and Steele Stebbins (“A Haunted House 2”), who play Rusty’s sons, James and Kevin. Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo reprise their roles as Clark and Ellen Griswold from the classic “Vacation” comedies.’

It’s in UK cinemas August 21st. [Read more…]

Ricki And The Flash Trailer – Meryl Streep is a full-on rocker chick

May 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ricki-and-the-flash-poster1Meryl Streep may be in her 60s, but she’s still got rock in her soul, or at least she does in Rick And The Flash. Now we get to take a look with the first trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Meryl Streep takes on a whole new gig – a hard-rocking singer/guitarist – for Oscar®-winning director Jonathan Demme and Academy Award®-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody in Ricki and the Flash. In an original and electrifying film loaded with live musical performances, Streep stars as Ricki Rendazzo, a guitar heroine who made a world of mistakes as she followed her dreams of rock-and-roll stardom. Returning home, Ricki gets a shot at redemption and a chance to make things right as she faces the music with her family. Streep stars opposite her real-life daughter Mamie Gummer; Rick Springfield, portraying a Flash member in love with Ricki; Kevin Kline as Ricki’s ex-husband; and Audra McDonald as Kline’s new wife.’

The movie will be out this summer. [Read more…]

Paul Rudd & Paul Bettany Join Captain America: Civil War As Production Begins

May 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ant-man-paul-rudd-shirtlessCaptain America: Civil War is increasingly turning into and Avengers movie in all but name, as while it will lack a few of the throng, such as Thor and Hulk, it’s got Iron Man and Scarlet Widow, and now it’s been confirmed it will also have The Vision (Paul Bettany), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and James ‘War Machine’ Rhodes (Don Cheadle).

To many people’s surprise, after making his Marvel Universe debut later this year in Ant-Man, Paul Rudd will also be in the new Cap film.

And while Marvel has largely ignored 2008’s The Incredible Hulk despite it being technically part of their filmic universe (even if it did have a different actor in the main role), it’s now bringing back one of that movie’s characters, William Hurt’s General Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross.

The info was included in a press release announcing the start of production, which also included the following synopsis, ‘“Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.’

As that suggests, the movie will shake things up, with the fallout being seen in Avengers: Infinity War.

What isn’t known yet is who will play another character we’ve been promised for the movie, Spider-man, but presumably we’ll find out who’s playing the role very soon.
