J.K. Simmons Joins Tom Hiddleston In Kong: Skull Island

December 16, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jk-simmonsA few weeks ago Tom Hiddleston became the first actor to sign up to star in Kong: Skull Island (which as the time was just known as Skull Island, before it got a more franchise friendly title). Now he’s got some company, as the always excellent J.K. Simmons has signed up too, according to Variety.

Few specific details have been released about the plot, or indeed either of the actors’ characters, but we do know it will be a prequel to King Kong, and that the movie will be entirely set on Skull Island, the mysterious place full of dinosaurs and monsters, along with giant apes. The speculation is that it will be about how Kong became the last of the giant gorillas, while also giving an explanation for how outsiders new about the island and so set sail to later find and capture Kong.

Back in October screenwriter John Gatins (Need for Speed, Real Steel) signed up to rewrite the original script by Max Borenstein (Godzilla, Seventh Son). Jordan Vogt-Roberts is set to direct back, with March 10th, 2017 release date already pencilled in.

Guy Best Friends See Each Other Naked For The First Time In A Fun (Yet Awkward) New Vid

December 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

guys-friends-seeSome male friends can’t get through a Saturday night out without managing to all get naked at some point, but many, many other straight men may have known each other for decades without ever seeing each other’s genitals.

That’s the subject of this new Buzzfeed video, where three pairs of besties agree to disrobe and take a look at what’s on show.

As you might expect there’s plenty of awkwardness on display – not just because they’re seeing their friend’s junk, but because the moment they disrobe they suddenly seem to realise that they’re on video and are going to have to make some sort of comment on what is suddenly on view. While most seem to realise it’s not as big a deal as they thought, there’s at least one who looks like he wish he’d never agreed to take part (perhaps because his mate is treating this like it’s the ultimate bonding-for-life experience).

It is quite amusing though, and maybe a good lesson for the gay guys who seem to think no man is a friend unless you’ve not just seen him naked but been to bed with him too. [Read more…]

Cucumber, Banana, Tofu Teaser – Get a preview of Russell T. Davies’ gay-themed TV triptych

December 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

cucumber-teaser-slideAs announced a while ago, Queer As Folk creator Russell T. Davies is returning to the world of gay-themed TV, and he’s doing it in style with three different shows – Cucumber, Banana and Tofu.

Now the first teaser for the shows has arrived, along with confirmation they’ll hit UK TV in January.

The central show, Cucumber, is about 46-year-old Henry (Vincent Franklin) and his boyfriend Lance (Cyril Nri) whose comfortable and settled existence is shattered after the most disastrous date night in history – involving a threesome, two police cars, and Bony M – and Henry’s new life begins. That will be eight 60-minute instalments that will be shown on Channel 4 in the UK.

Side-characters from Cucumber will then feed into the companion show, Banana, which will air on E4 in 30 minute episodes, while Tofu is a factual series focussing on sex and sexuality, that will take its themes from the shows. That series will be online.

(In case you’re wondering, the titles are references to comparisons Davies heard to the, err, level of a man’s excitedness).

The shows promise to look at the ‘passions and pitfalls of 21st Century gay life’, although those of you in the US may have to wait a while, as Davies has previously hinted it may be a little too hot for American TV. Hopefully we’ll get a better look soon. [Read more…]

New Inherent Vice Trailer – Fresh look at Joaquin Phoenix in Paul Thomas Anderson’s film

December 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

inherent-vice-joaquin-phoenixDirected by Oscar nominee Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Oscar nominees Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin and Owen Wilson; Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon and Benicio Del Toro; Katherine Waterston, Martin Short, Jena Malone and Joanna Newsom, Inherent Vice is released in the UK on January 30th 2015.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When private eye Doc Sportello’s (Joaquin Phoenix)ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a loony bin…well, easy for her to say.

‘It’s the tail end of the psychedelic `60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” that’s being way too overused—except this one usually leads to trouble.

‘With a cast of characters that includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, LAPD Detectives, a tenor sax player working undercover, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists… Part surf noir, part psychedelic romp—all Thomas Pynchon.

‘“Inherent Vice,” is the seventh feature from Paul Thomas Anderson and the first ever film adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon novel.’ [Read more…]

Wild Card Trailer – Jason Statham is in trouble with the mob

December 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

wild-card-jason-stathamIn Wild Card Jason Statham spends 90 minutes writing poetry, playing with puppies and pondering the meaning of Sartre’s existentialist philosophy. Ok, no he does, he does what we’d expect and gets involved in some serious action.

The movie is a remake of the 1986 Burt Reynolds film Heat (no, not the Michael Mann one) and also stars Michael Angarano, Sofia Vergara, Jason Alexander, Hope Davis, and Stanley Tucci. Oddly though, while it is a remake, in some respects it’s actually the original, as it uses William Goldman’s initial screenplay, before it was tinkered with and in his opinions made worse for the 1986 version.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Nick Wild (Jason Statham) is a Las Vegas bodyguard with lethal professional skills and a personal gambling problem. When a friend is beaten by a sadistic thug, Nick strikes back, only to find out the thug is the son of a powerful mob boss. Suddenly Nick is plunged into the criminal underworld, chased by enforcers and wanted by the mob. Having raised the stakes, Nick has one last play to change his fortunes… and this time, it’s all or nothing. From two-time Academy®Award-winning writer William Goldman (Best Original Screenplay, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 1969; Best Adapted Screenplay, All the President’s Men, 1976).’

The film’s in US cinemas at the end of January, but no UK date is currently set. [Read more…]

Apropos Of Nothing: Andrew Christian Gets Parodied To Show There’s More To Life Than Twinks

December 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

andrew-frictionRegular readers will know we’re fans of Andrew Christian’s videos here at BGPS (although we wish they would stop twerking all the time – yes it makes things jiggle, but it looks stupid). However we’re also well aware that AC gives us a gay wet dream of a universe populated solely by young, good-looking, skinny, toned and highly sexualised men. There is of course a lot more to the world than that.

As a result it’s about time for a decent parody, and that’s arrived in the form of ‘Island House Presents: Andrew Friction’, which keeps the OTT sexual atmosphere (in funny form), while giving us a selection of guys who are still good-looking, but some are older, others are hairier and some have a few extra pounds on them.

And if you’re wondering what an Island House is, it’s a gay resort in Key West for all types of gay men (although if you go to the homepage of their website, you’ll see they certainly don’t have anything against the gym-toned – and naked – twink types).

Take a look at the fun and yet still sexy vid below. [Read more…]

Brothers Episode 5-7 – The great web series about trans men concludes its first season

December 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

brothers-s1-ep8Brothers has been breaking new ground with its look at a group of trans men, which unlike most mainstream inclusive entertainment actually has real trans people playing the roles. We previously posted the first four episodes, which you can watch here and here, and now it’s time for the last few episodes of this debut season.

The show is about ‘Jack, a transgender man living in Brooklyn, [who] has recently started sleeping with a cisgender* man after exclusively dating women his entire adult life. His friend Davyn is on the verge of proposing to his longtime girlfriend, Amy. Aiden, the youngest of the group – pre-testosterone and pre-surgery – is aiming to raise money for his top surgery as the date approaches. Max, the eldest, has been on hormones longer than both Jack and Davyn, but hasn’t had the financial resources to obtain his top surgery.

As you’ll notice things end on a bit of a cliffhanger, with the hope being that the makers will be able to secure the funding to make a second season.

Take a look at the season finale episodes below. [Read more…]

Larry Kramer Talks Adapting The Normal Heart Sequel For The Screen

December 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

larry-kramerAfter more than 20 years of trying to get it made, The Normal Heart finally made it to screens last summer to huge acclaim, going on to win two Emmys and score three Golden Globe Nominations. It also scored a large enough audience that HBO backed Larry Kramer to adapt his follow-up, the Pulitzer Prize finalist The Destiny Of Me, for the network, with Ryan Murphy set to direct.

Now he’s been talking to Variety about it, saying, “I’m about two-thirds of the way through the first pass. It starts around the end of ‘The Normal Heart’ in 1984. And it goes [through to] the appearance of the first drugs around 2001. Mark Ruffalo, who we hope will repeat his performance, will have to play Ned at a few times in his life: at the time of ‘The Normal Heart’; in the middle where he gets sick; and today.”

Ruffalo isn’t the only actor he hopes will be back, as he adds, “The part of Tommy, which I hope will be played again by Jim Parsons, is much bigger. He becomes a more important character in the sequel, as he was in my real life.”

The same is true of Julia Roberts, with Kramer commenting that, “In the sequel, the part of the doctor is quite dramatic in that her polio returns and she has to go into an iron lung, and she conducts business from the hospital.”

Many had wondered what the notoriously difficult to please Kramer would think of The Normal Heart film, but he was delighted with the results, saying of the first time he saw it, “I was brought in from the hospital in a wheelchair to an HBO screening room to watch the final version. It was an experience more surreal than anything else. I wasn’t able to really take in the magnitude of Ryan’s achievement… I’ve been very happy. I thought the cast was superb, and HBO has got to be the most wonderful producers in the world.”

However while he notes that gay people are represented on TV more, he still feels there’s a long way to go for LGBT people, saying, “I don’t see what I want to see. We’re still a population of people tragically unrepresented by power. We are very disorganized in terms of power in Washington, our ability to lobby, our ability to get what we’re entitled to and the few organizations that we have are not strong enough. We still don’t fight hard enough and we’re still denied so much in terms of equality. Marriage, that goal will probably happen, I guess. But everybody has been concentrating on marriage at the expense of other issues—certainly health care, insurance and AIDS, which is still very prevalent in the gay world. Sadly, the drugs that have come along to control HIV have sent a lot of people back into living the kind of life that got us in trouble in the first place.”
