J.A. Bayona To Helm A Monster Calls Before World War Z 2

March 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Juan-Antonio-BayonaA couple of months ago Juan-Antonio Bayona (The Impossible) signed up to helm the planned sequel to World War Z. However it appears that won’t be for a while as Examiner.com reports that he is first going to helm A Monster Calls, which will shoot this autumn for release in 2016.

The movie will be based on the award-winning children’s fantasy novel by Patrick Ness (the Chaos Walking trilogy). It’s described as ‘a visually spectacular drama about a young boy who attempts to deal with his mother’s illness and the bullying of his classmates by escaping into a fantastical world of monsters and fairy tales that deal with courage, loss and faith.’

Bayona comments, “It is an incredible privilege to bring Patrick Ness’ exceptional book to the screen and I couldn’t have imagined better partners joining me in this endeavor. After The Orphanage and The Impossible, A Monster Calls is the perfect final chapter in a trilogy centered on the extraordinary strength of the mother-child bond.”

Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four – Documentary about women accused of being lesbian, Satanic, child molesters

March 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the 1980s and 1990s there was a spate of accusations and prosecution based around the idea that children had been abused (or even murdered) as part of Satanic Rituals. These investigations often involved entire communities, resulting in numerous people being convicted and imprisoned.

However nearly all these cases have since been debunked, with virtually no evidence Satanic abuse ever took place (and tragically it often stemmed from individual children who were abused, whose suffering got swept up in hysteria that enveloped other children and adults who had nothing to do with it).

It is perhaps not too surprising that those who were primed to see Satanic abuse were often keen to see it amongst those living ‘alternate lifestyle’. This hysteria resulted in four Texan women, all lesbians, spending 15 years in prison. They were eventually freed ahead of an appeal, with the State dropping the case against them after they admitted that the medical evidence used to convict them was indefensible in court.

The documentary Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four looks at the story, and you can watch the trailer here. Work In Progress screenings of the film are currently underway. [Read more…]

Anti-Gay School Bullying Film From Stonewall Launches

March 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

stonewall-gay-bullying-film
Recent reports have made for some worrying reading about how young homophobic bullying can start. In the UK, two in five primary school (if you’re from the US, that’s elementary school) teachers say children experience homophobic bullying, while three in four say pupils in their school use homophobic language. However only a quarter of these teachers have actually addressed issues relating to sexual orientation in their classrooms.

Now campaigning group Stonewall has come up with something to help – Free – a film directed by Rikki Beadle-Blair, which is designed to combat bullying and most particularly anti-gay bullying, as well as the ‘importance of celebrating difference’.

Stonewall says, ‘Designed in conjunction with a panel of leading primary school teachers, this age-appropriate film builds on Stonewall’s acclaimed Different Families campaign, and has been specifically designed to complement schools’ Key Stage 2 Personal Health and Social Education (PSHE) curriculums.’

The film can either be viewed in its 60-minute entirety in classrooms, or in 15-minute blocks, each focussing on a different person. You can take a look at the trailers for the different parts below. [Read more…]

Oculus Trailer – Karen Gillan & Brenton Thwaites have mirror issues

March 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Karen Gillan’s first filmic step after Doctor Who, Not Another Happy Movie, might not have been great, but these year’s she’s got Guardians Of The Galaxy and the horror movie Oculus coming out, which are both a little more intriguing. Now a trailer for the latter has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Ten years ago, tragedy struck the Russell family, leaving the lives of teenage siblings Tim and Kaylie forever changed when Tim was convicted of the brutal murder of their parents. Now in his 20s, Tim (Brenton Thwaties) is newly released from protective custody and only wants to move on with his life; but Kaylie (Karen Gillan), still haunted by that fateful night, is convinced her parents’ deaths were caused by something else altogether: a malevolent supernatural force—unleashed through the Lasser Glass, an antique mirror in their childhood home. Determined to prove Tim’s innocence, Kaylie tracks down the mirror, only to learn similar deaths have befallen previous owners over the past century. With the mysterious entity now back in their hands, Tim and Kaylie soon find their hold on reality shattered by terrifying hallucinations, and realize, too late, that their childhood nightmare is beginning again…’. New The Boxtrolls Trailer – Fresh look at Laika’s (gay) family friendly adventure

March 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Laika has had success with the likes of Coraline and Paranorman and they return this year with The Boxtrolls, which looks like it could be a lot of fun – and as the very first trailer suggested, it’s a movies for all families, no matter the gender make-up of the parents and kids. Now a new trailer for the movie has arrived, which you can watch right here.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A family event movie from the creators of “Coraline” and “ParaNorman” that introduces audiences to a new breed of family – The Boxtrolls, a community of quirky, mischievous creatures who have lovingly raised an orphaned human boy named Eggs (voiced by Isaac Hempstead-Wright) in the amazing cavernous home they’ve built beneath the streets of Cheesebridge. When the town’s villain, Archibald Snatcher (Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley), comes up with a plot to get rid of the Boxtrolls, Eggs decides to venture above ground, “into the light,” where he meets and teams up with fabulously feisty Winnifred (Elle Fanning). Together, they devise a daring plan to save Eggs’ family.’

The film’s currently due out in the US on September 26th, 2014. [Read more…]

Will Steven Spielberg Remake West Side Story?

March 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

west-side-story-600px
Steven Spielberg has made all sorts of movies, but he’s never made a full-on musical. He’s flirted with a few and included musical numbers in several of his films, but he’s never actually gone all the way with it. That may change though as Deadline reports that he’s interested in remaking West Side Story.

It’s very early days though, as all that’s happened so far is that Spielberg has expressed his interest and Fox, which owns the rights, has given him the okay to explore the idea.

If you’re going to make a musical, West Side Story is one of the best, but the 1961 movie version is an outright classic that won 10 Oscars and is remembered as one of the most impressive fusions of film, music and dance ever created. Even if you’re Steven Spielberg, that’s quite something to live up to.

The bearded one may have a particular idea of what he can bring to this retelling of Romeo & Juliet, which is set in New York and follows the romance between Maria and Tony, who are trapped between warring gangs. Leonard Bernstein wrote the music, Stephen Sondheim handled the lyrics and Arthur Laurents came up with the book.

It will probably never happen, but I’m kind of intrigued as to what Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story would look like.

March 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

captain-america-2-poster7
If you’ve seen Captain America, you might not have expected Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes to be able to be in the sequel – not least because rather than the 1940s, this takes new film place in the modern day. However as this poster shows he is returning, but this time he looks rather different.

He’s not just back, he is the chilly military man of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy—the Winter Soldier.

‘Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1941, Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is produced by Kevin Feige, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, and stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Emily VanCamp and Hayley Atwell, with Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.’

The film is out March 26th, 2014 and a week later in the US.

James Mangold Up For The Deep Blue Good-By, But Leonardo DiCaprio Won’t Star

March 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

James-MangoldIt’s one-off and one-on for The Deep Blue Good-by. Last May Leonardo DiCaprio signed on to star in an adaptation of John D. MacDonald’s 1964 novel The Deep Blue Good-by. He’s now decided not to appear in the movie (although he will still produce), but The Wolverine’s James Mangold is now in negotiations to direct, according to Deadline.

The Deep Blue Good-by is was the first in a long-running series of books that centre on the character of Travis McGee. The  character lives on a houseboat, called The Busted Flush, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he takes”salvage consultant” jobs whenever he is running low on money, recovering lost items for clients for half of the profits.

After he meets the battered Lois, he tries to track down her abusive boyfriend, a journey which becomes far more violent and complicated than he imagined.

Dennis Lehane wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay, which was previously worked on by Kario Salem and Dana Stevens. It’s not known when it might shoot, or who DiCaprio’s replacement will be.

Transformers: Age of Extinction Trailer – The rules have changed for Mark Wahlberg & Jack Reynor

March 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After lots of posters and promises, the trailer for Transformers: Age Of Extinction is here. All the posters said that ‘The rules have changed’, but from the look of it the rules of Michael Bay moviemaking haven’t, with women there to look pretty and lots of things exploding.

There are some pretty cool shots, including looks at the dinobots which will show up in the film.

In the movie, Mark Wahlberg will play Cade, the father of Nicol Peltz’s Tessa. Jack Reynor meanwhile is Tessa’s boyfriend, Shane. Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, Sophia Myles and Bingbing Li also star, with Michae Bay once more directing. The movie will be out in cinemas in late June in the US and early July in the UK.
