Elizabeth Banks To Direct Pitch Perfect 2

January 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

elizabeth-banksPitch Perfect was proof that you don’t always need an original plot if you can make a familiar story incredibly funny and heartwarming. What many don’t realise is that Elizabeth Banks didn’t just have a small role in the movie, she also helped originate the idea for it and produced the film.

Now a sequel has officially been announced, and Banks is moving up into the director’s chair for it, according to THR. It will be her feature directorial debut – and if she can bring half the wit she does to her acting, we should be in for a treat.

As the first film was originally seen as a one-off – few expected it to gross over $100 million around the world – none of the original cast were signed for a sequel. However as most of them have publicly stated they’d love to make a follow-up, the likes of Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and Skylar Astin are expected to return.

There’s no news on what direction the movie might take, although expect a lot more a capella singing.

Personally we’re voting for a bigger role for Freddie Stroma’s abs, which were certainly a high point of the first movie. And if you don’t believe us, take a look below.

A Long Way Down Trailer – Aaron Paul & Pierce Brosnan contemplate suicide

January 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s almost a year a half since filming started on A Long Way Down and we got the first image. It’s only now that we’re getting a trailer for the adaptation of Nick Hornby’s excellent book, even though when it went into production there was talk of having it ready for an early 2013 release.

The film starts on New Year’s Eve on the top of a London skyscraper. Martin (Pierce Brosnan) is literally on the edge. A once-beloved TV personality, he’s now desperate to jump. But he’s not alone. Single mother Maureen, (Toni Collette), sassy teen Jess (Imogen Poots), and failed musician turned pizza-delivery boy JJ (Aaron Paul), have all turned up on the same roof with the same plan. Instead of jumping, these four strangers make a pact to stay alive and stay together until Valentine’s Day at least. The movie then follows this group of unlikely friends as they try to pull back from the brink.

Sam Neill also stars in a film that may have a depressing sounding synopsis, but if it’s anything like the book will be unexpectedly rewarding. It’s out in March in the UK but is still awaiting a US release dates. [Read more…]

The Zero Theorem Trailer – Back into the wild world of Terry Gilliam with Christoph Waltz

January 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Terry Gilliam’s storytelling can sometimes be a bit iffy, but his movies are always great to look at, and The Zero Theorem looks like it will be no exception. It also has a story that offers plenty of potential as well.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘An eccentric and reclusive computer genius plagued with existential angst works on a mysterious project aimed at discovering the purpose of existence – or the lack thereof – once and for all. However, it is only once he experiences the power of love and desire that he is able to understand his very reason for being.’

Christoph Waltz leads the cast with David Thewlis, Melanie Thierry, Ben Whishaw, Tilda Swinton and Matt Damon also starring. It’s due out in the UK in March, although no US release is set yet. [Read more…]

Free Fall (Freier Fall) (DVD)

January 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

Starring: Hanno Koffler, Max Riemelt, Attila Borlan, Katharina Schuttler
Director: Stephan Lacant
Running Time: 100 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 27th 2014

After finding a lot of success at film festivals, Free Fall makes it way to DVD in the UK. It’s been described as the German Brokeback Mountain, and while there are similarities, they’re more on the surface than going deep. Indeed this is more a morality tale than an examination of forbidden love in a deeply homophobic society.

Marc (Hanno Koffler) seems to have it all – he’s set to be part of an elite police squad, he’s moved in with his girlfriend and has a baby on the way. While training he meets Kay (Max Riemelt) and they start to go on jogs together. After a brief sexual encounter in the forest, Marc runs off and decides it was just a one off. However soon he comes back for more and he starts exploring new parts of himself – although he’s still insistent that he’s isn’t gay or even bisexual. [Read more…]

Celluloid (DVD)

January 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Daniel Booth, Jody Latham, Olivia Sweeney, Janet Bamford
Director: Lloyd Eyre-Morgan
Running Time: 106 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: January 27th 2014

Lloyd Eyre-Morgan’s directorial debut, Dream On, hit DVD last summer, and now he’s back with Celluloid, a movie that’s part kitchen sink drama, part thriller, with a little bit of horror movie thrown in as well. It sounds like an odd mix, but it works surprisingly well, thanks to interesting characters and a well-observed look at life.

Our protagonist is Josh (Daniel Booth), a 15-year-old boy who’s coming to terms with his sexuality. He has a major crush on his straight best friend – who shares his love of making films – but has yet to tell anyone he’s gay. However coming out isn’t his first priority as his homelife is tough. His mother, Dawn (Janet Bamford), has mental health issues and seems poised for another breakdown. [Read more…]

The Case Against 8 Gay Marriage Documentary Wins Major Prize At Sundance

January 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

case-against-8-posterLGBT projects have done pretty well at Sundance. A couple of days ago we reported that Burger picked up the Special Jury Award for Direction and Ensemble Acting at the Sundance Film Festival in the short filmmaking categories. Now in the feature categories, The Case Against 8, about gay marriage in California, has won the Best Documentary Direction prize.

The film goes deep inside the court cases that sought to overturn California’s ban on same-sex marriage following the ballot measure Proposition 8 was enacted. The film follows the unlikely team that took the first federal marriage equality lawsuit to the US Supreme Court, which eventually resulted in equal marriage returning to California.

It was slightly coming full circle for directors Ben Cotner and Ryan White, as they met at Sundance and have been putting the movie together ever since. They thanked the “incredibly inspiring people we were able to follow around for five years.”

The award-winning movie will screen on HBO in the US this June.

Fresh Maleficent Trailer – Featuring the music of Lana Del Rey

January 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A week or so ago we had a trailer for Maleficent which compared Disney’s new live action movie to the one that inspired it, Sleeping Beauty. However now we get a new one, which may give us a better feel for what the movie will actually be like, as it features rather haunting music by Lana Del Rey, taking on her version of the classic Once Upon A Dream.

We also get plenty of new footage, suggesting a movie that’s more Lord Of The Rings than fairy tale.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Disney comes “Maleficent”—the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.’

It’s due in cinemas this May. [Read more…]

Ride Along Tops The US Box Office Again While I Frankenstein Bombs

January 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ride-along-posterIf I, Frankenstein had been hoping to be a big hit, its dream came crashing down over the weekend. It could only manage sixth place with an $8.2 million start, which means it’s now going to really struggle to make back its $65 million budget. The makers had been hoping it would open with similar numbers to the Underworld films, but it ended up starting with less than half of those movies.

It was however the only new entry in the top 10, with Ride Along once more taking the top spot with $21.1 million. It’s now taken $75 million, which is far more than most expected it to after only nine days.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of January 24th-26th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Ride Along $21.1 $75.4
2 Lone Survivor $12.6 $93.6
3 The Nut Job $12.4 $40.2
4 Frozen $9.0 $347.8
5 Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit $8.8 $30.1
6 I, Frankenstein $8.2 $8.2
7 American Hustle $7.1 $127.0

January 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

blood-glacier-eacSplicing its way onto DVD this winter, comes the blood chilling creature feature – BLOOD GLACIER (aka The Station). With giant insects and crazed cross breeds galore, what’s not to get excited about in this perfect hybrid of horror and science gone wrong. To celebrate the release of Marvin Kren’s Blood Glacier, we have a copy on DVD to give away! Coming to DVD on Monday 27th January from StudioCanal.

Working in a remote outpost of the German Alps, technician Janek and a cohort of scientists are stunned to discover a bleeding blood glacier parked high up in the mountain range. As this fusion of nightmarish creatures evolves in the life-giving mountain air, a second group including Janek’s ex-girlfriend advance towards the base in what will become a showdown of humans vs. nature upended into giant wood lice, beetle-foxes, crossbreed flying predators and much, much worse.

Rush (Blu-ray)

January 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Bruhl, Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara, Pierfrancesco Favino
Director: Ron Howard
Running Time: 122 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 27th 2014

There were quite a few people who were expecting Rush to get a few Oscar nominations, but in the end it was shut out. It’s a shame as it’s a damn fine movie and should have got some kudos, even if it was only in the production design and cinematography departments, as it does such a great job of recreating 1970s Formula 1 racing.

The film tells the true story of the intense rivalry between the British James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Austria’s Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl). They first meet in Formula 3, where it’s clear they are very different people. Hunt is a playboy whose life is about sex, drugs, partying and being everyone’s friend.  Lauda meanwhile is far more serious, seeing racing as being about business. He spends his time learning the mechanics of the cars, as well as showing off an arrogant streak that ensures none of the other drivers like him that much. [Read more…]

Sunshine On Leith (Blu-ray)

January 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: George MacKay, Kevin Guthrie, Jane Horrocks, Peter Mullan, Antonia Thomas
Director: Dexter Fletcher
Running Time: 100 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: January 27th 2013

Unless you’re a fan, you could be forgiven to think Scottish musical twins The Proclaimers only had one song, the ubiquitous I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles), although some might also be able to tell you Letters From America is also one of their tunes. As a result to some it may seem odd to base a musical around their songs, but it’s actually a surprisingly smart idea.

Firstly, you may well recognise more of their songs than you expected, and it’s certainly true their music is pretty well known in Scotland, even if not all of it is as popular in the rest of the UK. Secondly, while many acts sing rather airy tunes that talk about abstract ideas and attempt to be universal by being deliberately vague, The Proclaimers music is far more personal, with seemingly naïve but actually rather complex lyrics that place the music resolutely in the shoes of someone living a real life. The songs reference specific Scottish locations and talk about the sort of small scale events of life and how they affect someone emotionally. [Read more…]
