Sarah Paulson Joins Todd Haynes’ Lesbian-Themed Carol

January 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Sarah-PaulsonTodd Haynes Carol has been slowly coming together, and now another piece has slotted into place, as Variety reports that Sarah Paulson has signed up to star alongside Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara in the lesbian-themed movie.

Paulson is a great addition. She’s shown how good she is in the likes of Studio 60 and Martha Marcy May Marlene, but it’s only with American Horror Story that’s she’s really started get the attention she deserves. She’s also, in case you didn’t know, bisexual, having exclusively dated men until she got together with actress Cherry Jones. Sadly they broke up and since then Paulson has said she’s open to relationships with both men and women.

Carol is an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 novella The Price of Salt, which follows the relationship between two women in 1950s New York. One is a young department store clerk (Mara) who dreams of a better life, and the other is a woman (Blanchett) trapped in a loveless marriage. Playwright Phyllis Nagy wrote the screenplay adaptation. Paulson will play Blanchett’s ex-lover and current confidante.

Set against the golden age of Formula 1 racing, Rush portrays the fast-paced, action-packed and exhilarating true story of two of the greatest rivals the sport has ever witnessed – James Hunt versus Niki Lauda and their illustrious Formula 1 racing teams, McLaren versus Ferrari.

First Look At Brenton Thwaites & Jeff Bridges In The Giver

January 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

giver-pic1
Jeff Bridges’ dream is finally coming true. He’s been trying to get an adaptation of The Giver off the ground for over around two decades, but it’s only now, with the popularity of other young adult movies, that it’s finally happened. EW has released the first couple of images from the film, featuring Bridges and Brenton Thwaites, which you can see above and below.

Lois Lowry’s original book is a philosophical fantasy set in another world where all emotions, history and freedom have been expunged. Thwaites plays Jonas, a young man who, when assigned a profession, is given the important yet painful job of being the society’s Receiver of Memories. The new position sees him cut off from everyone he knows and he is mentored by the former Receiver of Memories, known as The Giver (Bridges). As Jonas and The Giver work together, the young man’s eyes are opened to the lies that the society is built upon.

The great cast also includes Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgard, Katie Holme and Taylor Swift. It’s due out in August.

Mike Newell Plans To Direct Day Of The Triffids Movie

January 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mike-newellFor several years there’s been talk of making a big screen Triffids movie, with the likes of Sam Raimi attached to direct. However we haven’t had much news for a while, but it seems the idea has been resurrected, as Deadline reports that Mike Newell (Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire) is hoping to direct.

Raimi is still involved as a producer, alongside Don Murphy, Mark Gordon and Susan Montford.

John Wyndhams original tale, The Day Of The Triffids, revolves around a meteor shower which results in 99.9% of the world population going blind. The meteors also release aggressive plants dubbed Triffids, who begin to attack the blind masses, with a few non-blind survivors trying to fend off the devastating attack.

Neil Cross (Luther) has written the screenplay, although it’s not certain when it might shoot.

Rosario Dawson Says She’ll Return For Kevin Smith’s Clerks III

January 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rosario-dawsonRosario Dawson joined the world of Kevin Smith’s Clerks as Becky Scott in 2006’s Clerks II. Now the actress has suggested she’ll be back as the character in the planned Clerks III.

While doing press for her new film, Gimme Shelter, she was asked if Smith proposes to release the sequel this November, to coincide with the 20th Anniversary of the first film. Dawson commented, “Well, we haven’t shot it, so I don’t know if that’s possible. He just confirmed that I’m in it!”

Last month Smith said that he wants to start production this May. Although it would be a very quick turnaround to get the film in cinemas by November, it’s certainly not impossible, especially considering the Clerks movies don’t need a lot of special effects. It wouldn’t be too far from the schedule he’s been working to on his new movie Tusk either.

Brian O’Halloran, whose Dante character got engaged to Dawson’s Becky at the end of Clerks II, will likely return, alongside Jeff Anderson’s Randall. Jason Mewes and Smith should also appear as Jay and Silent Bob.

Garrett Hedlund Might Be Captain Hook in Pan

Garrett Hedlund in Tron Legacy

Garrett Hedlund

With Warner Bros. recently slotting Pan into the July 15th 2015 release date vacated by Batman Vs. Superman, the race is on to get Joe Wright’s film into production. In December Hugh Jackman entered negotiations to play Blackbeard. Now he may have some company, as THR reports that Garrett Hedlund has been offered the lead role of Captain Hook.

The actor beat out the likes of Jack Huston and Ezra Miller for the coveted role.

The movie, which is a prequel written by Jason Fuchs, follows young orphan Peter Pan, who is taken to Neverland and ends up leading the locals in a rebellion against the pirates. Captain Hook starts out as an ally to Peter Pan before turning villainous.

It’s not certain when it will start shooting, although it will have to be fairly soon.

Daniel Espinosa Eyed To Direct Michael Fassbender In Assassin’s Creed

January 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

daniel-espinosaIt’s been a while since we’ve heard much about the planned movie version of the hit videogame franchise Assassin’s Creed. The last news was that Frank Marshall was producing with Michael Fassbender attached to star. Now they may have found a director, as Twitch suggests 20th Century Fox is eyeing Daniel Espinosa to direct.

No deal has been signed, but talks are ongoing between the director and the studio. Espiona is best known in the states for Safe House and his international hit Easy Money (also known as Snabba Cash).

Assassin’s Creed follows a bartender who learns he comes from a long line of assassins. He is forced by a corporation to hunt down precious artifacts, while using a device that gives him all the skills and memories of his ancestors.

Assassin’s Creed is currently scheduled for a 2015 release, with the studio hoping to start shooting fairly soon.

Robert Zemeckis May Direct Man on Wire Adaptation With Joseph Gordon Levitt Starring

January 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Joseph Gordon-Levitt in The Dark Knight RisesIt seems that Robert Zemeckis is hoping to To Reach For the Clouds, which is a 3D narrative remake of the hit documentary Man on Wire. The film already has someone in its sights for the lead role, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt being eyed to star, although he’s yet to be officially offered a deal.

Producer Tom Rothman has acquired the rights to the memoirs of Philippe Petit, who walked on a tightrope strung between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center on August 7, 1974. Zemeckis is planning to direct from a script he is co-writing with Christopher Browne. The director has apparently always wanted to make a feature about Petit, but it was Rothman, who’s new company TriStar Productions is focussing on high concept 3D ideas, who got him involved in this film.

The actual tightrope walk won’t be featured until towards the end of the movie, with the bulk of the film looking at on how Philippe Petit and a group of friends meticulously planned what was later called the ‘artistic crime of the century.’ It took six years from conception to execution. Eventually in 1974 they snuck up to the top of the towers to string a 450-foot cable from one building to the other, using a custom-made 26-foot balancing pole. The heist elements of the story are (inevitably) being compared to Ocean’s Eleven.

The original Man on Wire documentary, directed by James Marsh, won the Oscar for Best Documentary in 2009. The feature version hops to shoot this summer.
