Bryan Cranston Signs Up For Biopic Of Blacklisted Screenwriter Dalton Trumbo

September 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Bryan-CranstonWith Breaking Bad coming to an end, Bryan Cranston is looking for new projects. Now he’s landed his first major feature film starring role, as he’s to play blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo in a biopic, simply called Trumbo, according to Variety.

Dalton was the highest-paid screenwriter of his era, earning an Oscar nomination for his screenplay Kitty Foyle. However, his career came crashing to a halt when he was called before House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), but refused to answer any questions about his political affiliations.

He was sent to prison and then became one of the infamous ‘Hollywood 10’, who were completely blacklisted from the studio system. Trumbo refused to give in and ended up winning two Academy Awards in the 1950s, for the classics Roman Holiday and The Brave One, which he wrote under pen names. He eventually launched a campaign to end the blacklist once and for all, going on to write other classics such as Spartacus, Exodus and Papillon. He died of lung cancer in 1976.

Jay Roach is set to direct from a screenplay by John McNamara, with filming planned for sometime next year.

New TOM Teaser – Take a hunky look at the other Tom Of Finland movie

September 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Last week it was was announced that Dome Karukoski has signed on to direct a biopic of famed homoerotic artist Tom Of Finland. Many wondered what that meant for a rival movie, which released a teaser earlier this year.

Now it’s become clear that directors Vesa Kuosmanen & Henri Huttunen are still planning to make their movie, simply called TOM, as they’ve released a sexy new teaser to coincide with the launch of an IndieGoGo campaign to raise cash for the film.

The teaser sees Tom Of Finland working away while we see his fantasies of men in leather, cowboy outfits and sailor suits. Very nice! It also promises a movie that is ‘sexy, humorous and masculine’.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Until the year 1971, being gay in Finland could land you in jail for years. There was a boy born in 1920. In his childhood he drew pictures of naked men. While drawing, he wore only leather boots. As a young man he fought in the war and had sex with his fellow soldiers, both Finnish and German. During his adulthood he lived a double life: by day, a talented advertising artist and a pianist, by night a genius creator of erotic drawings. We remember him through leather, huge muscles, even larger cocks and humour — empowering the masculine gay man. You know the artist Tom of Finland. Now meet Touko.’ The film will concentrate on the period in the 1950s when Touko Laaksonen became the homoerotic Tom Of Finland.

The teaser also takes a sideways swipe at the other film, making a point of the fact that TOM is independent, while its rival is a ‘official’ biopic, being made in collaboration with the artist’s estate.

His stature has grown over the years to the point where the likes of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) hold his images.

TOM is looking for 40,000 Euros, with plans to shoot the film next summer for release in 2015. Olli Rahkonen is set to play Touko/Tom. If you want to help out, head over to IndieGoGo. [Read more…]

Apropos Of Nothing: Henry Cavill Teaches Us Respect, On Sesame Street

September 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

If there’s one US TV show that can get pretty much anybody it wants to turn up for a guest spot, it’s Sesame Street. Everyone from Michelle Obama to Zac Efron has shown up in recent years, along with many, many others.

Now it’s the turn of Superman himself, Henry Cavill. While Efron gave us all a lesson in patience, Jon Hamm talked about sculpture and then Kellan Lutz taught us about vibrations (yes, really), Cavill is here to tell us all about Respect. Unfortunately he doesn’t break into the Otis Redding/Aretha Franklin classic song, but it’s still a good lesson to have anyway.

Personally, I think Cavill may have missed his calling as a children’s TV presenter, even if he does seem to be trying to be even more British than he normally is. [Read more…]

Arrow’s Sexy Colton Haynes Turns Singer With His Rendition Of You Raise Me Up

September 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Colton Haynes is best known for looking very, very pretty. Oh, ok, he’s best known for starring in the likes of Teen Wolf and Arrow – although he is undoubtedly very pretty too.

He’s also been hiding a talent, as it turns out he’s a pretty nifty singer too.

He’s posted a teaser of his version of You Raise Me Up (which the likes of Josh Groban and Westlife have had success with, but was actually written and first performed by Ireland’s Secret Garden). Haynes may not have the power of Groban, but it sill sounds nice.

The teaser followed a tweet where Colton said, “Hey Tweeps! Check out the teaser for this special musical project I’ve been working on! Details soon…”

Before we find out about that, we’ll be able to see him in Season 2 of Arrow, and hopefully he’ll be as shirtless as he was in the new promo poster that was released yesterday. [Read more…]

James Franco Kisses A Guy In Staged Paparazzi Shots

September 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

james-franco-paparazzi1
James Franco is at it again, this time taking to his Instagram account to post staged paparazzi shots, complete with Perez Hilton style scrawls on top. We’re presuming it’s some sort of arty thing, where he’s making a point about how gossip websites take images and run them out of context, while plastering famous people’s stars all over the place, without actually knowing anything about them.

Or maybe he’s just having a laugh.

And this being Franco, he couldn’t help himself but go a few slightly gay shots, where he kisses a guy. There are also some where he’s in a car with a mystery blond. Personally we like the ones with the cute guy better.

Hey, perhaps this is his way of telling us he has both a girlfriend and a boyfriend! Who knows?

Take a look at the pics above and below. [Read more…]

Matt Bomer May Play Gay/Bisexual Star Montgomery Clift In A New Film

September 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

matt-bomer-slide
It appears that White Collar and Magic Mike star may be playing the legendary 1950s star Montgomery Clift in an upcoming biopic – at least according to producer Michael Din, who revealed the news on Twitter.

After a user posted the question (to Perez Hilton), ‘Since you know everything, is it true that Matt Bomer is playing Montgomery Clift in the movie Monty Clift by pier3pictures??’

Din replied, ‘@Yolanda150965 Yes, he is, altho we don’t have a schedule yet. It won’t shoot til 2014′

In the late 40s and early 50s, Clift was on the path to becoming one of the biggest stars in the world. After The Search, Red River, A Place In The Sun, I Confess and From Here To Eternity, he was a true heart-throb with three Oscar nominations to his name, and in many people’s opinion a talent on a par with James Dean and Marlon Brando – and all that by the age of 24.

However, Clift was also gay (or at least bisexual) at a time when homosexuality was illegal. He never really came to terms with his sexuality. He suffered from severe self-loathing throughout his adult life (as did many gay people back them) and became a severe alcoholic. In 1956, during the filming of Raintree County, he crashed his car while drunk, which caused various injuries, including facial lacerations that meant he was never quite as good looking again. While he continued to work, with a prominent facial scar and alcohol quickly ageing him, his roles were limited and his days as a heart-throb were essentially over.

He died in 1966, aged only 45, from alcohol-related occlusive coronary artery disease. Acting teacher Robert Lewis famously described Clift’s death as the longest suicide in history.

Bomer seems a good choice to play him, as they certainly share the fact they were/are incredibly good looking with great cheekbones. Being gay in Hollywood also gives Bomer a bit of further insight into Clift.

Evil Dead’s Fede Alvarez To Direct Dante’s Inferno

September 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fede-alvarezFede Alvarez made a successful jump to feature-length movies this summer with Evil Dead, and while he’s already got a sequel to that film in the works, he’s now adding another film, as Deadline reports that he is in talks to direct Dante’s Inferno, an adaptation of the Electronic Arts video game.

The project has been in development for a long time, as Universal secured the rights to the game in 2008, two years before its release. It is unsurprisingly based on the Dante Aligheri’s famous literary work, following Dante, who in the game is a knight, who teams up with the poet Virgil to rescue Dante’s lover Beatrice from the nine rings of hell. He eventually becomes a pawn in a war between heaven and hell.

Jay Basu (The Dinosaur Project) wrote the most current draft of the screenplay, with Bruce C. McKenna writing an earlier draft. There’s no news on when it might shoot.

Tropic Thunder Writer Etan Cohen To Direct Will Ferrell & Kevin Hart InGet Hard

September 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Etan-CohenEtan Cohen, who’s probably best known for co-writing Tropic Thunder, has signed up to direct Warner Bros’ comedy Get Hard, according to Variety. Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart have been attached to star in since December.

The film is about an affluent investment banker (Ferrell) who is sent to prison for a crime he didn’t commit (nobody in films goes to prison for crimes they did commit – except for maybe the bad guy at the end). Before he is locked up, he ‘trains’ for prison life with the man who washes his car (Kevin Hart).

Warner Bros. wants to start shooting as soon as possible, as they want to get it in the can before the actors commit to any other movies. Etan Cohen’s feature directorial debut was supposed to Daddy’s Home, which also has Will Ferrell attached to star, but now Get Hard is likely to come first.
