New Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Trailer – Felicity Jones heads for a galaxy far, far away

August 12, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rogue-one-slideWhile the first teaser trailer for Rogue One was pretty cool, there have been rumours of trouble behind the scenes, with Disney said to be concerned about the tone, and the need for extensive reshoots. However, the latest trailer continues to make this look like it could be awesome. It certainly has a different feel to The Force Awakens,  and it’s not surprising they have gone for a slightly 1970s look, as the film is set just before A New Hope.

The film follows the mission that got hold of the Death Star plans that played such a vital role in the first movie, with the trailer not just teasing the planet destroying weapon, but also the fact Darth Vader will feature in the movie. And after the success of Rey, the trailer introduces us to another strong heroine in the form of Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso.

The movie hits cinemas in December. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Trailer – Felicity Jones has a very important mission in a galaxy far, far away

April 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rogue-one-trailer-slideNow this is an interesting one. There was a lot riding on the trailer for Rogue One after the success of The Force Awakens, as not only did it have to show it wasn’t a follow-up to last year’s movie but it also needed to show those uncertain about it that it wasn’t just a shameless cash-in on the Star Wars name.

I think it’s fair to say it does a great job, displaying a darker, more adult tone, while showing an impressive feel for the look of the original Star Wars trilogy, mixed with some very modern special effects. It’s not surprising they have gone for that slightly 1970s look, as the film is set just before A New Hope.

Mississippi Grind (DVD Review)

March 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ben Mendelsohn, Ryan Reynolds, Sienna Miller, Yvonne Landry, Alfre Woodard
Director: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck
Running Time: 108 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 7th 2016 (UK)

There are undoubtedly some people who will watch Mississippi Grind and wonder what the point of it is, as not a vast amount happens other than two guys drifting around and gambling on various things. However, others will appreciate this look at two men leading lives on the periphery of society, who lack connection but may have found some sort of direction in each other.

Gerry (Ben Mendelsohn) is an inveterate gambler who’s lost his wife and child, he’s massively in debt and has run out of time to pay it off. Then he meets Curtis (Ryan Reynolds), who also loves to bet, but still has life and verve – something Gerry is severely lacking. While he’s a drifter, he couches it in terms of being a free spirit who goes where life takes him. [Read more…]

Ben Mendelsohn Wanted For Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One

January 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ben-Mendelsohn

Back in September Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ready Player One got its first star when Olivia Cooke signed up for the movie. Now she may be getting some company, as Variety reports Ben Mendelsohn is in early talks for the film. Assuming he ends up joining the movie, he’ll be the villain.

Mendelsohn is best known for Animal Kingdom, The Dark Knight Rises, Exodus: Gods & Kings, but is likely to become a better known name by the end of the year, thanks to his major role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is out in December.

The movie will be based on Ernie Cline’s novel. Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade’s devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world’s digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator’s obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade’s going to survive, he’ll have to win—and confront the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.’

The main thing the movie is currently lacking is someone to play Wade, but that’s likely to change soon, as Spielberg is currently testing a range of young actors to play the role. The film should be in cinemas December 15th, 2017.

First Pic From Star Wars: Rogue One Emerges, While Colin Trevorrow Will Direct Episode IX

August 16, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-wars-rogue-one-pic1Having spent billions to buy Lucasfilm, it’s not surprising Disney wants to make their money back. They’re certainly investing vast amounts of money to make the most of their investment, and they’re doing so before the first new Star Wars film has even arrived in cinemas.

JJ Abrams’ The Force Awakens, which is Episode VII of the central story, will arrive later this year, and another film based in the Star Wars universe, Rogue One, is already in production. As well as that, standalone movies about the likes of a young Han Solo are already being developed, and screenwriters are hard at work on Episodes VIII & IX.

Rian Johnson has previously been announced to direct Episode VIII, and now Disney has confirmed rumours that Jurassic World helmer Colin Trevorrow will take on Episode IX. While production won’t begin for a few years, Trevorrow is heading to Lucasfilm this year to begin working with artists and his fellow Star Wars directors. “Colin is someone I’ve been interested in working with ever since I saw Safety Not Guaranteed,” says Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. “The power of that film paired with the enormous success of Jurassic World speaks volumes about his abilities both as a storyteller and skilled filmmaker. We are thrilled to have such an incredible talent as Colin join our family and step into the Star Wars universe.”

It should mean he still has time to helm the Jurassic World sequel which is due out in 2017.

Alongside the announcement of Trevorrow, Disney have released the first official pic from Rogue One, as well as the logo. They also confirmed the cast, which will include Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk and Riz Ahmed.

Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) is directing that more, which is set shortly before the events of A New Hope, and follows a rogue band of resistance fighters who unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans and bring new hope to the galaxy (AKA the plans that end up stowed away in R2D2 at the beginning of A New Hope). Take a look at the first pic from Rogue One above.

Mississippi Grind Trailer – Ryan Reynolds & Ben Mendelsohn go gambling

July 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mississippi-GrindMississippi Grind got a decent reception at Sundance, with critics noting that Half Nelson filmmakers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck brought the spirit of the 70s to their movie.

Now the trailer has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Gerry (Mendelsohn) is a talented but struggling poker player about to be swallowed up by his unshakeable gambling habit. But his luck begins to change after he meets the young, charismatic Curtis (Reynolds). Gerry convinces his new lucky charm to hit the road with him, towards a legendary high stakes poker game in New Orleans. Ben Mendelsohn Rumoured For Star Wars Rogue One

March 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ben-MendelsohnDisney/Lucasfilm may have only announced the title of their Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One, a couple of weeks ago, but with a December 2016 release date already set there’s no time to waste as with tonnes of special effects needed, they know they need to start filming fairly soon.

Felicity Jones has already been cast, and now Deadline reports that Dark Knight Rises and Animal Kingdom’s Ben Mendelsohn may join her. Unsurprisingly there are no details on who he’ll play.

Indeed no official plot details have been released at all, although rumours suggest it will be about a groups of bounty hunters or pirates who steal the plans to the Death Star, and that it will therefore be set between Episodes III and IV (and may involve a young Han Solo). Mendelsohn would seem perfect for the type of rough, tough character who’d be sent on such a mission.

Gareth Edwards will direct from a script by Chris Weitz (with an earlier draft by Gary Whitta). The movie will shoot this summer in the UK.

Starred Up (DVD Review)

August 3, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jack O'Connell, Rupert Friend, Ben Mendelsohn, Sam Spruell, Anthony Welsh
Director: David Mackenzie
Running Time: 106 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: August 4th 2014 (UK)

Eric (Jack O’Connell) is transferred from a young offenders institution to adult prison, and while he feels as if he can be a king in this new place, it soon becomes clear that he’s been thrust somewhere far more brutal and dangerous than he’s used to. The young man knows that his father, Neville (Ben Mendelsohn) is in the prison, and is hoping for a reunion.

It’s an awkward reunion though, as while Nev is keen to protect his boy, he is a violent, dangerous man and the two have very little common ground, especially due to the anger Eric barely seems to realise he harbours against his father. [Read more…]

Starred Up Trailer – Jack O’Connell & Ben Mendelsohn head for prison

January 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jack O’Connell may not be a name you know well now, but he may be a lot more famous by the end of the year thanks to major roles in Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken and 300: Rise Of An Empire. Before then he’s got Starred Up, which also stars Ben Mendelsohn and Rupert Friend in a prison drama.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In STARRED UP, Jack O’Connell gives a star-making performance as 19 year-old Eric Love, a violent and troubled teenager making the difficult transition from a young offenders’ institute to adult prison. He seems to be destined for a life behind bars, but the prison’s unconventional therapist (Rupert Friend) is determined to help Eric find a way through, assisted by of one of the prison’s longest serving inmates – Neville (Ben Mendelsohn) – who just happens to be Eric’s father.’

It’s in UK cinemas on March 21st. [Read more…]
