Palo Alto Trailer – James Franco stars in a film adapted from his own book

April 3, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

James Franco is well known as an actor, and in recent years he’s got a growing reputation as a director. However fewer people realise he’s also a published author. Now his 2010 book Palo Alto: Stories is getting a movie adaptation.

Franco’s book is a series tales loosely based on his own childhood, as well as suggestions people sent to him. That episodic narrative remains in the film, with the film tied together by Franco and Emma Roberts as a soccer coach and student embarking of a forbidden relationship.

It’s a bit of a Hollywood in-fest as along with Franco and Emma (nieve of Julia Roberts), it’s the film debut of Jack Kilmer (son of Val Kilmer, who also stars) and of writer/director Gia Coppola (who’s the granddaughter of Francis Ford Coppola).

The film’s due out in the US in August. [Read more…]

James Franco May Play Man Who Went From LGBT Rights Fighter To Ex-Gay Activist

April 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

james-franco-600pxJames Franco is turning his back on the gays! Well, no, he isn’t, but he may be playing a character who does. The NY Post reports that Franco is teaming with director Gus Van Sant to make a movie about the controversial Michael Glatze.

Glatze started out as a young gay man who was passionate about helping LGBT youth, including marching in gay rights rallies and urging young people to celebrate their non-traditional sexualities. He also launched the magazine Young Gay America after working at XY, becoming a leading voice in the gay rights fight.

However in 2004 he had a health scare involving a possible heart defect, which caused him to turn to conservative Christianity. Shortly afterwards he completely renounced everything he had previously stood for and said that he was now ‘ex-gay’.

In 2007 he wrote in a WorldNetDaily article that, “Homosexuality, delivered to young minds, is by its very nature pornographic.” Shortly afterwards he revealed that he was “repulsed to think about homosexuality” and that he was “going to do what I can to fight it.”

He has been rather changeable though (as if he’s still searching for something), briefly becoming a Mormon as well as occasionally seeming to slightly soften his stance by talking about bisexuality and fluid sexuality. He’s currently married to a woman and perhaps most surprisingly of all, despite this entire journey he’s still only 38.

The movie will be made on a budget of $3.5 million, with the hope of shooting in New York in July. It’ll be interesting to see which way Van Sant takes it, as while gay himself he is known for having a bit of a counterculture penchant, leaving some to wonder if he will use Glatze’s story to pick apart gay assimilation. More like though it will be more the tale of a man’s tragic fall. Either way, as Glatze hasn’t (yet) decided gays are ok after all, it’s unlikely to have a happy ending.

Maladies Trailer – James Franco turns troubled actor in a new movie

February 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

James Franco is a very busy man, writing, directing and/or starring in more movies than most actors could humanly fit in. Now the trailer for a new one has arrived, Maladies, where he plays a troubled actor.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A daring new film from internationally acclaimed multimedia artist Carter, Maladies charts the struggles of an unstable former soap opera star (James Franco) in 1960’s New York as he tries to restart his floundering creative career. Hoping to find clarity and new purpose as a writer, he holes up with his eccentric sister at the seaside home of their best friend (Catherine Keener). But as he disappears further into his own mind, reality begins to slip through his grasp. Featuring an award-winning ensemble, including David Straithairn and Alan Cumming, Maladies is a heartfelt but defiantly unconventional exploration of the creative mind.’

It’s out in the US in March.

James Franco Up For A Sausage Party Alongside Jonah Hill & Seth Rogen

January 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

james-francoBack in September is was revealed that Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill were writing an R-rated animated comedy called Sausage Party. However at that point it wasn’t clear if either would have voice roles, but now it’s been confirmed we will indeed hear them both, as well as their This Is the End co-stars James Franco, Michael Cera and David Krumholtz, along with Kristen Wiig, Edward Norton and Nick Kroll.

The movie is about a sausage who falls out of his shopping cart and goes on a journey with some new friends through the supermarket, in order to find his way back home before the mania of the Independence Day sale.

Another on of the co-writers, Evan Goldberg, has previously described is as an “existential mock-Pixar movie.”

It’s not know who any of the actors will voice, but Conrad Vernon (Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted) and Greg Tiernan are directing from a script written by Rogen, Goldberg, Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir, based on a story by Rogen, Goldberg and Hill. The film should be in cinemas in 2015.

Lovelace (DVD)

December 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Amanda Seyfried, Peter Sarsgaard, Juno Temple, Adam Brody, James Franco
Director: Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: December 23rd 2013

How do you make a true-tale movie where the facts are in dispute? Well, you either pretend they’re not in dispute, or you try to find a way to suggest you don’t fully know what happened. Or, like Lovelace, you try to do both and trip over yourself in the process.

The film is a biopic of Linda Lovelace (Amanda Seyfried), the star of 70s porn chic hit Deep Throat, which by some reckonings is the most profitable movies ever made on the basis of budget versus its gross – however as much of the cash went through mob-controlled porn theatres, it’s impossible to know how much it actually made. Little Failure Book Trailer – James Franco goes gay once again

December 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Books may be for reading, but Gary Shteyngart decided that to promote his new memoir it’d be a good idea to film a trailer, so he got the likes of James Franco, Rashida Jones and Jonathan Franzen together to do just that. And as this is Franco, it’s little surprise that the actor is playing gay.

Franco plays Shteyngart’s husband, with the writer horrified to learn that his hubby is releasing a memoir, ’50 Shades Of Gary’ a week before him.

Here’s the description of the book from Amazon: ‘After three acclaimed novels, Gary Shteyngart turns to memoir in a candid, witty, deeply poignant account of his life so far. Shteyngart shares his American immigrant experience, moving back and forth through time and memory with self-deprecating humor, moving insights, and literary bravado. The result is a resonant story of family and belonging that feels epic and intimate and distinctly his own.’ [Read more…]

Interior. Leather Bar (DVD)

December 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: James Franco, Val Lauren, Travis Mathews, Brenden Gregory
Director: James Franco
Running Time: 60 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: December 8th 2013

Sometimes it’s difficult to work out what’s going through the head of James Franco. There’s some evidence in Interior. Leather Bar that Franco isn’t sure himself, but that he’d sure like to find out.

First some background. In 1980 Al Pacino starred in Cruising, with The Exorcist’s William Friedkin directing. The movie sees Al as a cop who is tasked with going undercover into the New York S&M scene, where a gay serial killer is lurking. At first he hates it, but soon a strange fascination grows. James Franco Gets NSFW As Robin Leaves A Mess On Batman

December 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

james-francoSometimes it’s difficult to work out what’s going on with James Franco. For example, are the pics below some sort of artistic statement, is he just messing around, or was he just very, very drunk? Or perhaps he’s a secret Batman S&M fan!

If art, we’re assuming he’s trying to explore the homoerotic underpinnings of the relationship between Batman and Robin by making absolutely explicit something that is usually only implied. After all, he did title them ’50 Shades of Batman and Robin’.

If just messing around, we want to know if that’s real man gravy?

The actor posted the images on his Instagram. Take a look below to see if you can figure out what’s going on. [Read more…]

Seth Rogen & James Franco Get Hilariously Homoerotic In A Parody Of Kimye’s Bound 2

November 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There are few people on the planet unaware that James Franco has got a thing for all things homosexual (he’s described not being gay as his biggest regret). Now he’s got Seth Rogen in on the action for a shot-for-shot remake of Kanye West’s video for Bound 2 – which they’ve titled Bound 3.

However, rather than West and fiancee Kim Kardashian getting up close and personal, it’s Franco and Rogen. They get friendly on a motorbike, with Rogen taking his shirt off and showing that’s he’s certainly got hairier shoulders than Kim!

It’s silly, funny and successly lampoons the pomposity of so much of West’s output.

Rogen and Franco made the vid during time out during the shooting of their latest film, The Interview, which will be in cinemas Autumn 2014. [Read more…]

Crush Of The Day: James Franco & Colton Haynes Decide It’s Shirtless Selfie Time

November 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

james-franco-shirtless-selfie

Today Oxford Dictionaries announced that their word of the year is ‘Selfie’. Now I’m wondering whether they phoned James Franco and Colton Haynes a couple of days ago to ask if they’d mind posting some shirtless selfies to mark the occasion.

Franco put his pic up on his Instagram accompanied by the simple message, “All the kids are doing it.”

Arrow and Teen Wolf star Haynes meanwhile decided that insomnia was a good excuse to let people know what it’s like to be in bed with him. His Instagram message was, ‘Can’t sleep’, to which most people started praying they could become the reason for that.

Take a look at the shirtless star selfies above and below. [Read more…]
