New Mary Magdalene Trailer – Rooney Mara stars as Jesus’ infamous follower

February 17, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Who is Mary Magdalene? She’s probably best known for being a prostitute – although the problem with that is that it doesn’t actually say she was in The Bible. Her lady of the night reputation came along much later. More recently Dan Brown decided she was Jesus’ wife. But who was she really?

Well, a new movie seems keen to give a different take on her, presenting her closer to being a bit of a revolutionary.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘MARY MAGDALENE is an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history. The biblical biopic tells the story of Mary (Rooney Mara), a young woman in search of a new way of living. Constricted by the hierarchies of the day, Mary defies her traditional family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth (Joaquin Phoenix). She soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to Jerusalem.’

Mary Magdalene is released in the UK on March 16th 2018. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

You Were Never Really Here Trailer – Lynne Ramsay directs Joaquin Phoenix in the violent drama

January 13, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

You Were Never Really Her got a great reception at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, including seeing Joaquin Phoenix pick up Best Actor. Not bad for a movie that sounds like a more serious version of Taken.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A missing teenage girl. A brutal and tormented enforcer on a rescue mission. Corrupt power and vengeance unleash a storm of violence that may lead to his awakening. Written and directed by Lynne Ramsay and based on the book by Jonathan Ames, You Were Never Really Here stars Joaquin Phoenix, Ekaterina Samsonov, Judith Roberts, John Doman, Alex Manette, Dante Pereira-Olsen, and Alessandro Nivola.

‘You Were Never Really Here premiered at the 70th Cannes Film Festival, where Joaquin Phoenix won the award for Best Actor and Lynne Ramsay was the joint winner for Best Screenplay. The film is scheduled to be released March 9th 2018.’ [Read more…]

Jake Gyllenhaal Will Be One Of The Sister Brothers, Opposite Joaquin Phoenix

February 11, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jacques Audiard won the Palm d’Or at Canned for his last movie, Dheepan, about a former Sri Lankan freedom fighter finding life difficult as an asylum seeker in France. However, he’s planning something rather different for his next film, the noir western, The Sister Brothers.

The movie is set to star Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly, and Variety reports that it’s just added Jake Gyllenhaal to its cast. The film, based on Patrick deWitt’s award-winning novel, ‘follows two brothers – Eli and Charlie Sisters – who are hired to kill a prospector who has stolen from their boss. The story takes place in Oregon in 1851.’ However, things don’t turn out quite as expected, especially as the man they’re supposed to kill seems so nice, and may be able to help the Sisters get rich.

The film is due to start shooting this summer. That will be after Gyllenhaal has completed his Broadway musical debut run in a revival of Sunday in the Park With George, which opens shortly.

Gus Van Sant & Joaquin Phoenix May Reteam For Biopic Of Cartoonist John Callahan

November 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

her-joaquin-phoenixIn the 1990s, Gus Van Sant liked the Phoenix’s, directing River Phoenix in My Own Private Idaho and a few years later Joaquin Phoenix in To Die For. Both were seminal roles for the actors, and since then Van Sant and Joaquin have talked about working together again numerous times, but either their schedules didn’t work out, ot the movie they were working on together fell through.

However, now they’re attempting to come together again, with Variety reporting that they’re set to team on Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot, the long-gestating biopic of cartoonist John Callahan. And it really is long-gestating, as various Hollywood figures have been working on adapting Callahan’s autobiography since before My Own Private Idaho was made (Robin Williams was initially attached to play Callahan in the late-80s and early-90s).

The biopic will follow Callahan who was ‘paralyzed in a car accident at age 21, and turned to drawing as a form of therapy. For decades Callahan’s work raised eyebrows for its taboo topics leading to numerous boycotts in his hometown of Portland. His work was published in the New Yorker, Penthouse, and Playboy before his death in 2010.’ John’s work often touched on macabre topics, with a particular interest in physical disability, with his work labelled politically incorrect by many.

It’s not clear when the movie may shoot.

Casey Affleck To Direct Joaquin Phoenix In Far Bright Star

November 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

casey-affleck-joaquin-phoenixCasey Affleck is turning director once more, and his I’m Still Here actor (and real-life brother-in-law) Joaquin Phoenix is again set to star.

THR reports the duo are going western for an adaptation of Robert Olmstead’s 2009 novel, Far Bright Star, which ‘is set in 1916 and tells of an aging cavalryman, to be played by Phoenix (WME, Sloane Offer), who is leading a ragtag group of young men on a hunt for the legendary Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa. When the group is attacked and most of his charges are killed, the man is left struggling for survival in the desert.’

Affleck comments, “This is a beautifully written story on pain and loss and the drive and resilience one finds within themselves to continue through the day.”

It’s not clear when it will shoot.

Irrational Man Trailer – Joaquin Phoenix & Emma Stone star in Woody Allen’s latest

April 29, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

irrational-man-emma-stone-joaquin-phoenixIt’s time for our first look at Woody Allen’s annual movie, and coming off the Oscar-winning triumph of Blue Valentine he’s brining us Irrational Man, which stars Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone and Parker Posey.

As always with Allen there aren’t too many details about the movie, but Phoenix will play a philosophy professor who’s suffering from an existential crisis which results in him wondering what the point of life is. However then – and this will be a shock for Allen fans – he meets a younger woman, strikes up a friendship, who changes his life.

It’s not exactly groundbreaking territory for Woody, and as so often in his films, it feels like Joaquin in playing an Allen analogue. Whether it’ll work this time around should become clearer soon as it’s due to premiere at Cannes in mid-May. [Read more…]

Inherent Vice (Cinema Review)

January 29, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Owen Wilson, Josh Brolin, Katherine Waterston, Martin Short
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
Running Time: 149 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 30th 2015

If you demand coherent plots and comprehensible dialogue from your movies, look away now. There is not one scene of Anderson’s sprawling behemoth of a movie that makes any sense whatsoever. It’s a stoned, fug-smoked, labyrinth of a film noir that takes pleasure in its baffling structure and dares you to go along with it. Frankly after an hour it’s too much effort, and the pleasure switches in watching great actors revelling in show-off roles soaked in dreamy Californian sunshine. [Read more…]

New Inherent Vice Trailer – Fresh look at Joaquin Phoenix in Paul Thomas Anderson’s film

December 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

inherent-vice-joaquin-phoenixDirected by Oscar nominee Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Oscar nominees Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin and Owen Wilson; Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon and Benicio Del Toro; Katherine Waterston, Martin Short, Jena Malone and Joanna Newsom, Inherent Vice is released in the UK on January 30th 2015.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When private eye Doc Sportello’s (Joaquin Phoenix)ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a loony bin…well, easy for her to say.

‘It’s the tail end of the psychedelic `60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” that’s being way too overused—except this one usually leads to trouble.

‘With a cast of characters that includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, LAPD Detectives, a tenor sax player working undercover, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists… Part surf noir, part psychedelic romp—all Thomas Pynchon.

‘“Inherent Vice,” is the seventh feature from Paul Thomas Anderson and the first ever film adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon novel.’ [Read more…]
