Steve Carell, Channing Tatum & Mark Ruffalo Feature In New Foxcatcher Pics

September 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Who’s got short shorts? Well, from the evidence of these photos, Channing Tatum does, and he’s also going forehead-to-forehead with Mark Ruffalo in these new pics from Foxcatcher. And that’s not even to mention Steven Carell’s magnificent fake nose!

The drama is based on the true tale of Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo), who was murdered by his paranoid schizophrenic friend Jon Du Pont (Steve Carell) in 1996. Du Pont was an heir to the Du Pont chemical company, who teamed up with Dave’s brother Mark (Tatum) to build a wrestling training facility known as ‘Team Foxcatcher’ on his sprawling Pennsylvania estate. The Schultzes tried to get Du Pont help for years before the murder. Sienna Miller plays Nancy, Doug Schultz’s wife,

Bennett Miller directs from a screenplay by Dan Futterman and E. Max Frye. It’s out in the US on December 20th, with a mid-January UK date set.

Thanks For Sharing Trailer – Mark Ruffalo & Gwyneth Paltrow deal with sex addiction

June 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you thought we’d dealt with sex addiction on screen with Choke and Shame, you were wrong, as it’s now getting a slightly comic treatment from The Kids Are All Right director Stuart Blumberg.

Mark Ruffalo, Gwyneth Paltrow, Josh Gad, Tim Robbins, Joely Richardson, Carol Caine, Patrick Fugit and Alecia Moore (aka Pink) star in the movie, which is about group of characters who are all suffering from sex addiction. Meeting regularly for support sessions, each of them struggles with their own personal demons as it effects their personal lives, including their families, friends, and significant others.

The film debuted at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, but it won’t arrive in US cinemas until September 20th. No UK date is currently set.

Now You See Me – Take a look at the first four minutes of the Jesse Eisenberg thriller

May 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Audiences weren’t that interested in magic with The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, but director Louis Leterrier will be hoping for more from Now You See Me. Now the first four minutes of the movie have popped up online, so we can get a good taste for the film.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Louis Letterier’s movie sees ‘The Four Horsemen, a magic super-group led by the charismatic ATLAS (Jesse Eisenberg), perform a pair of high-tech magic shows, first astonishing audiences by robbing a bank on another continent, and then exposing a white-collar criminal and funneling his millions into the audience members’ bank accounts.

‘FBI Special Agent DYLAN (Mark Ruffalo) is determined to make the magicians pay for their crimes—and to stop them before they pull off what promises to be an even more audacious heist. But he’s forced to partner with ALMA (Melanie Laurent), an Interpol detective about whom he is instantly suspicious. Out of desperation he turns to THADDEUS (Morgan Freeman), a famed magic debunker, who claims the bank heist was accomplished using disguises and video trickery. One thing Dylan and Alma agree on is that the Horsemen must have an outside point person, and that finding him (or her) is key to ending the magicians’ crime spree. Could it be Thaddeus? Or Alma? Or could it really be…magic?

‘As pressure mounts and the world awaits the Horsemen’s spectacular final trick, Dylan and Alma race to find an answer. But it soon becomes painfully clear that staying one step ahead of these masters of illusion is beyond the skills of any one man—or woman.’

The movie is released May 31st in the US and July 3rd in the UK. [Read more…]

Jonathan Groff Joins Ryan Murphy’s AIDS Drama, The Normal Heart

April 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jonathan-GroffUntil recently it seemed that only straight actors would play gay in high profile projects (that’s if anyone would play gay at all), in fear of getting typecast, but for The Normal Heart, Ryan Murphy has managed to put together a strong mix of straight and gay actors to take on Larry Kramer’s play about the early days of the AIDS crisis.

On the gay side the HBO film already has Matt Bomer and Jim Parsons, with straight actors such as Julia Roberts, Taylor Kitsch and Mark Ruffalo also signing up. Now the gays can add one more, as Glee and Broadway star (and Zachary Quinto’s boyfriend) Jonathan Groff has joined the cast, according to EW.

Groff will play an early victim of the disease called Craig, whose boyfriend will be Taylor Kitsch, a character who starts off as a closeted investment banker but eventually becomes an AIDS activist.

Ruffalo is taking on the lead role of Ned Weeks, one of the first people to raise an alarm about the new disease that initially was known as ‘Gay Cancer’. Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons will be gay activist Tommy Boatwright, a role he previously took in a 2011 Broadway revival of the play. Julia Roberts will play Emma Brookner, a wheelchair bound doctor who is the only one of her peers in New York taking AIDS seriously. Matthew Bomer is set for Felix Turner, a gay fashion journalist who becomes Ned’s lover.

HBO is backing the movie, which should shoot later this year for release in 2014. Indeed Groff will be hoping to spend a lot of time on HBO next year, as he’s also shot a pilot for a show about a group of gay friends in San Francisco. As yet it hasn’t been picked up to become a series, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed.

New Now You See Me Trailer – Jesse Eisenberg and co. turn Robin Hood magicians

April 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Audiences weren’t that interested in magic with The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, but director Louis Leterrier will be hoping for more from Now You See Me. However on the evidence of this trailer, the main magic has emerged from the computers of CGI special effects houses, although that doesn’t mean it won’t be entertaining.

Taylor Kitsch Going Gay For Ryan Murphy’s Normal Heart

March 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ryan Murphy (Glee, The New Normal) is pulling quite a cast together for his film adaptation of Larry Kramer’s acclaimed play, The Normal Heart. He’s already got Julia Roberts, Mark Ruffalo and Matt Bomer signed up, and now Deadline reports they’ve been joined by Taylor Kitsch, who many will be pleased to hear is gonna be playing gay. Jim Parsons, who was attached a while ago but whose participation became uncertain when the shoot was delayed, is also back on-board.

The film is about the rise of AIDS in New York’s gay community in the early-to-mid 80s. The play first debuted off-Broadway in 1985, and has enjoyed several revivals in Los Angeles, New York and London. Ruffalo is taking on the lead role of Ned Weeks, one of the first people to raise an alarm about the new disease that initially was known as ‘Gay Cancer’.

Kitsch is set to be Bruce Niles, a closeted investment banker who becomes a prominent AIDS activist. Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons will be gay activist Tommy Boatwright, a role he previously took in a 2011 Broadway revival of the play.

Shooting will start later this year for a 2014 release. Let’s hope Kitsch playing gay is as good on screen as it is in my head.

Ryan Murphy’s Normal Heart Going To HBO With Matt Bomer & Julia Roberts

January 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ryan-MurphyGlee, New Normal and American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy has been trying to get his adaptation of Larry Kramer’s Tony Award winning play The Normal Heart off the ground for over a year.

However, even attaching names such as Julia Roberts, Mark Ruffalo, Alec Baldwin, Matthew Bomer and Jim Parsons hasn’t been enough to get the funding he needed – until now that is. After months of rumours that HBO was looking at taking on the movie, it’s now been confirmed that the pay-TV network will produce the film and air it in 2014.

It’s not known if Alec Baldwin and Jim Parsons (who also starred in a New York stage revival of the play) are still involved, but THR confirms that Julia Roberts and Matt Bomer are set to star, as is Mark Ruffalo.

Julia Roberts will play Emma Brookner, a wheelchair bound doctor who is the only one of her peers in New York taking AIDS seriously. Matthew Bomer is set for Felix Turner, a gay fashion journalist who becomes Ned’s lover.

Murphy will direct, which will reunite him with Roberts after he helmed her in Eat Pray Love.

HBO seems to be trying to make itself the go-to place for high profile gay-themed projects. 2013 will see it air Behind The Candelabra, Steven Soderbergh’s biopic of Liberace (Michael Douglas) and his younger lover (Matt Damon), and now it’s following that with The Normal Heart.

Now You See Me Trailer – Jesse Eisenberg turns magician & bank robber

November 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Magic (of the stage variety) seems popular at the moment, with a Magic Castle movie in the works, Steve Carell starring in Burt Wonderstone and the heist thriller, Now You See Me, for which we now have the first trailer. It’s got an awesome cast, including Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffalo, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman.

Louis Letterier’s movie sees ‘The Four Horsemen, a magic super-group led by the charismatic ATLAS (Jesse Eisenberg), perform a pair of high-tech magic shows, first astonishing audiences by robbing a bank on another continent, and then exposing a white-collar criminal and funneling his millions into the audience members’ bank accounts.

‘As pressure mounts and the world awaits the Horsemen’s spectacular final trick, Dylan and Alma race to find an answer. But it soon becomes painfully clear that staying one step ahead of these masters of illusion is beyond the skills of any one man—or woman.’

It opens next June.

Sienna Miller Set For Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher

October 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few years ago it really seemed Sienna Miller’s movie career was taking off with the likes of GI Joe and Stardust, but since then we haven’t heard a huge amount from her (at least in mainstream movies). However now Deadline reports Miller has joined the cast of Foxcatcher for director Bennett Miller (Moneyball).

The drama is based on the true tale of Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo), who was murdered by his paranoid schizophrenic friend Jon Du Pont (Steve Carell) in 1996. Du Pont was an heir to the Du Pont chemical company, who built a wrestling training facility known as ‘Team Foxcatcher’ on his sprawling Pennsylvania estate. Schultz tried to get Du Pont help for years before the murder. Sienna Miller will play Nancy, Doug Schultz’s wife. Channing Tatum is set to star as Schultz’s younger brother.

Bennett Miller will direct from a screenplay by Dan Futterman and E. Max Frye. The film has been in development for years (it got delayed by Miller taking the Moneyball gig), but will finally start shooting later this month in Pittsburgh.

Avengers Assemble (Blu-ray)

September 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner
Director: Joss Whedon
Running Time: 142 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: September 17th 2012

We all remember the Battle Of New York, when Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, The Hulk, Hawkeye and Black Widow got together to fight off extra-terrestrial terrors coming through a wormhole, due to a plot by Loki. This documentary looks at what led up to that battle.

Well, okay, I’m sure you’re aware this isn’t a documentary, as we’re in a world sadly lacking in superpowered heroes (although the lack of alien terror-mongers is a bit of a plus), but as audiences proved earlier this summer, we do love to escape to a comic book world. Avengers Assemble is only the third film ever to gross more than $1.5 billion (and the first not directed by James Cameron). It’s an astonishing success, particularly as the movie made more than twice as much as any of the movies that led up to it (Iron Man 2 was the biggest previous Marvel produced movie, taking $623 million).
