The Ledge (Blu-ray)

April 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Patrick Wilson, Liv Tyler, Terrence Howard
Director: Matthew Chapman
Running Time: 97 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 16th, 2012

There’s a lot of talent involved in The Ledge and you can understand what attracted the cast to this philosophical, high concept thriller, but unfortunately a script that’s muddier than it ought to be results in a film that feels as if it’s not living up to its potential.

Detective Hollis (Terrence Howard) is having a bad day, as he’s just discovered he’s infertile and that his kids are therefore somebody else’s. He’s then called to a dramatic situation where a man called Gavin (Charlie Hunnam) is standing on a ledge threatening to jump. While Hollis tries to talk him down, Gavin tells his story, which involves meeting the ultra-religious Joe and Shana Harris (Patrick Wilson and Liv Tyler). As Gavin is an atheist, their initial interactions are rather prickly, especially when Joe is openly homophobic to Gavin’s gay roommate, Chris (Christopher Gorham). [Read more…]

The Ledge Featurette – Patrick Wilson & Charlie Hunnam talk up the thriller

April 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you like your thrillers with a bit of moral meat on them, The Ledge is a movie to look out for. It’s out on DVD on April 16th, but ahead of that Universal has provided up with a nice long featurette in which Charlie Hunnam (Sons Of Anarchy), Patrick Wilson (Watchmen) and Terrence Howard (Iron Man) discuss the movie. Irrespective of the film itself, that quite a trio of men, with Hunnam and Wilson particular favourites at BGPS, as we can’t forget them in Queer As Folk and Angels In America.

In The Ledge, Gavin (Hunnam) steps onto a 20 story ledge insisting he must jump to save a life. Meanwhile police negotiator Hollis (Howard), assigned to talk him down, is also having the worst day of his life after a visit to the doctor has revealed him to be infertile, making him wonder whose children he and his wife are raising. Gavin has just one short hour to make the choice between his own life or that of Shana (Liv Tyler), the married woman with whom he has been having an affair. As a test of faith, Joe (Wilson), a fundamentalist Christian and wronged husband of the beautiful Shana, has forced Gavin onto the ledge of a tall building to prove his love.

Find out a bit more about the film below in the fascinating featurette.

Young Adult (Cinema)

January 31, 2012 By Stephen Sclater Leave a Comment

Starring: Patton Oswalt, Patrick Wilson
Director: Jason Reitman
Running Time: 93 mins

Young Adult has Oscar pedigree written all over it. Directed By Jason Reitman (nominated for Up In The Air and Juno) in collaboration with everyone’s favourite hip writer, Diablo Cody (of Juno fame), and with the beautiful and talented Charlize Theron (Oscar winner for Monster) starring.

On paper it would appear that Mavis Gary (Theron) is a successful, beautiful 37-year-old writer living life to the full in Minneapolis, who’s enjoying all the trappings that life should bring a former prom queen. However, it is obvious from the opening scenes that her life is in a mess. She wakes up from a drunken stupor, having fallen asleep on her bed fully-clothed. She shuffles round her dishevelled apartment, drinks Coke for breakfast, prepares breakfast for her and her dog Dolce from ready made packet food, whilst watching The Kardashians on TV. [Read more…]

Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor Join The Conjuring

January 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of days ago it was announced that Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga has signed up to star The Conjuring for director James Wan (Saw, Insidious). Now they have some company, as Variety reports that Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor have joined the supernatural thriller.

The movie is about a husband and wife team of demonologists (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) who investigate a Rhode Island farmhouse. Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor will play the husband and wife who move into the farmhouse with their children, and encounter a number of evil spirits (last week it had appeared Wilson and Farmiga would be the husband and wife who’ve been haunted).

James Wan is directing The Conjuring from a screenplay by Chad Hayes and Carey Hayes. The film is based on the supposedly true story of the Perron family, and paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, which took place during the 1970s. Production is scheduled to begin this March in North Carolina.

Patrick Wilson & Vera Farmiga To Star In The Conjuring

January 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Conjuring isn’t a great title for a horror movie, as it makes it sound like people will be stalked by David Copperfield, but that’s the current name of a new flick that’s jumping on the ‘true life’ (but not actually true at all) horror band wagon. Now Variety reports that Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson have signed on to star in the movie.

The movie is based on the allegedly true story of a Rhode Island family who claimed they, “lived among the dead,” with friendly and evil spirits residing in their farmhouse. It isn’t clear what roles Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson will play, but it seems likely they will play the husband and wife.

The film will see Patrick Wilson reunite with Insidious (and Saw) helmer James Wan. It isn’t certain when production will begin on The Conjuring.

Prometheus Trailer Preview – Get a taste of the alien DNA

December 19, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is due to hit on Thursday, but today on Apple trailers a 30 second preview has dropped has dropped, so you can get a miniature taste of Ridley’s return to sci-fi. The director has also been talking to Filmophilia about the movie, and has cleared up whether we’d see the infamous xenomorph in this movie, which we’ve been promised will be shot through with Alien DNA (many had assumed the HR Giger creatures would pop up right at the end). However Ridley says, “No. Absolutely not. They squeezed it dry. He (the xenomorph) did very well. (He laughs) He survived, he’s now in Disneyland in Orlando, and no way am I going back there. How did he end up in Disneyland? I saw him in Disneyland, Jesus Christ!”

He adds, “There’s a quote I did, a pretty good quote: By the end of the third act you start to realize there’s a DNA of the very first Alien, but none of the subsequent aliens. To tell you what that is is a pity, and I’m not going to tell you, because it’s actually pretty good, pretty organic to the process and to the original. But we go back, we don’t go forward.”

Take a look below for our first taste of this very exciting sci-fi-flick. Prometheus is due for release on June 1st, 2012.

First Poster For Prometheus

December 15, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

What is it with Prometheus and giant heads? The first images featured a creepy big head and now it’s in the poster too, suggesting it’s got some sort of major part to play. As the plot revolves around the search for humanity’s beginnings, finding a hugh human head on an alien spaceship would be a good hint people weren’t 100% from Earth. With the film a semi-prequel to alien, that leads to a terrifying battle to save the human race.

Ridley Scott directs with Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Rafe Spall, Logan Marshall-Green, Guy Pearce, and Patrick Wilson starring. It hits cinemas in June.

New Prometheus Photos Revealed

November 23, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

We’ve still got over six months to wait until Ridley Scott’s sort-of Alien prequel, Prometheus, hits screens on June 1st, but EW has jumped in early by scoring some of the first images from the movie for their print edition. Luckily though the likes of Bloody Disgusting have scanned those pics and now we can take a look for ourselves.

Everything looks a bit glossier than it did in Alien, suggesting Ridley’s going for a different style this time around, although as the shot of the carved head shows, he’s keeping with some of the production design of the actual alien vessels.

Here’s the rather low-on-info synopsis: ‘Ridley Scott, director of “Alien” and “Blade Runner,” returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.’ The film stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Rafe Spall, Logan Marshall-Green, Guy Pearce, and Patrick Wilson.’

Rumours suggest the first trailer will also arrive fairly soon.
