Robert Downey Jr. Injured On Iron Man 3 Set

August 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s a problem many big action spectaculars face – you want the main star to do as many of the stunts as possible, so that it’s clearly them doing it on screen, but you always run the risk of them injuring themselves. That’s the issue Iron Man 3 has faced, as production was temporarily shut down after star Robert Downey Jr. was injured on the set.

Marvel Studios released the following statement regarding the unfortunate incident, ‘Robert Downey Jr. sustained an ankle injury on the set of Iron Man 3 in Wilmington, North Carolina while performing a stunt. There will be a short delay in the production schedule while he recuperates.’

There are no specifics on what kind of ankle injury he sustained, although it does not seem to be serious. There’s also no news on how long things will have to shut down for. However it doesn’t appear this will affect the release date. Production began in early June, with Shane Black directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Drew Pearce.

First Behind The Scenes Pic From Iron Man 3

June 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Iron Man 3 has started shooting, and to prove it Marvel has released the picture above of Robert Downey Jr. on set, in front of a line-up of his super-powered suits, just ready to appear in a shot.

Here’s the US press release that accompanied the image: BURBANK, Calif. (June 4, 2012) – Following in the footsteps of the record-breaking Marvel Studios’ release “Marvel’s The Avengers,” production on the highly anticipated film “Iron Man 3,” directed by Shane Black, has commenced production in Wilmington, North Carolina. The production schedule will also include locations in Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina, Miami, Florida and China.

Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1963, “Iron Man 3” returns Robert Downey Jr. (“Iron Man,” “Marvel’s The Avengers”) as the iconic Super Hero character Tony Stark/Iron Man along with Gwyneth Paltrow (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2,”) as Pepper Potts, Don Cheadle (“Iron Man 2”) as James “Rhodey” Rhodes and Jon Favreau (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2”) as Happy Hogan. Set for release in the U.S. on May 3, 2013, Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” marks the second feature to be fully owned, marketed and distributed by Disney, which acquired Marvel in 2009.

“Iron Man 3” continues the epic, big-screen adventures of the world’s favorite billionaire inventor/Super Hero, Tony Stark aka “Iron Man.” Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing the film. Executive producers on the project include Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Charles Newirth, Victoria Alonso, Stephen Broussard and Dan Mintz.

The creative production team on the film includes two-time Oscar®-winning director of photography John Toll, ASC (“Braveheart,” “Legends of the Fall”), production designer Bill Brzeski (“The Hangover,” “Due Date”), editors Jeffrey Ford, A.C.E. (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” “Captain America: The First Avenger”) and Peter S. Elliot (“Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer”), and costume designer Louise Frogley (“Quantum of Solace,” “Contagion”).

Marvel Studios most recently produced the critically acclaimed “Marvel’s The Avengers,” which set the all-time, domestic 3-day weekend box office record at $207.4 million. The film, which is currently in release, continues to shatter box office records and is The Walt Disney Studios’ highest-grossing global and domestic release of all time and marks the studios’ fifth film to gross more than $1 billion worldwide.

In the summer of 2011, Marvel successfully launched two new franchises with “Thor,” starring Chris Hemsworth, and “Captain America: The First Avenger,” starring Chris Evans. Both films opened #1 at the box office and have grossed over $800 million worldwide combined. In 2010 “Iron Man 2,” starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson and Mickey Rourke, took the #1 spot in its first weekend with a domestic box office gross of $128.1 million.

In the summer of 2008, Marvel produced the summer blockbuster movies “Iron Man” and “The Incredible Hulk.” “Iron Man,” in which Robert Downey Jr. originally dons the Super Hero’s powerful armor and stars alongside co-stars Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow, was released May 2, 2008, and was an immediate box office success. Garnering the number one position for two weeks in a row, the film brought in over $100 million in its opening weekend. On June 13, 2008, Marvel released “The Incredible Hulk,” marking its second number one opener of that summer.

Jon Favreau Back As Happy Hogan In Iron Man 3

May 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When Jon Favreau announced he wouldn’t be directing Iron Man 3, it appeared he’d had a bit of a falling out with Marvel. However any problems can’t be too bad, as Favreau has confirmed via Twitter he’s coming back for Iron Man 3, but only to reprise his role as Tony Stark’s bodyguard, Happy Hogan, uploading a image of his seat on the film’s set.

He’s not the only one up for the film, as Variety reports that actor Ashley Hamilton is now in talks to play the villain known as Firepower in Iron Man 3. The character in the comics is a corporate rival of Tony Stark’s who builds an armored suit for the government and then uses it to battle the titular hero. Quite frankly I don’t think Iron Man 3 really needs more metal-suited man vs. metal-suited man, but perhaps they can do something interesting with it.

Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle and Paul Bettany all return for the film, which is said to be based on the Extremis comic book arc where the hero must battle the spread of a stolen nanovirus. Shane Black is directing the film and co-wrote the script with Drew Pearce.

Robert Downey Jr & Tom Cruise Eyed For El Presidente

May 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Austin Powers and Meet The Parents helmer Jay Roach is a man with a plan, as he’s currently putting together the action-comedy El Presidente, and wants Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr to play the leads, according to Vulture.

Cruise has already shown some interest as a couple of year ago he was attached to star in the movie, at which time Jack Nicholson was mooted to co-star. However we haven’t heard much about the film since, but now Cruise is still being name-dropped in connection to the movie, as is Robert Downey Jr. What isn’t clear it whether any offers have been made to the stars, or if it’s just hopeful speculation on the part of the director and producers.

The film ‘follows an overzealous Secret Service agent whose work-life boundary issues get him reassigned to the inglorious task of guarding America’s worst former president, who is a bumbling sleaze. The job suddenly becomes exciting when a threat is made on the ex-president’s life and they must go on the run.’ Downey Jr. would be the President and Cruise would be the Secret Service agent.

It’s still a long way off coming together yet, although at the moment Downey Jr. doesn’t have anything firmly booked in after Iron Man 3, and while Cruise has a couple of sci-fi films ready to shoot this year, he may be able to slot this in too. We’ll have to wait and see.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows (Blu-ray)

May 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jude Law, Noomi Rapace, Jared Harris, Kelly Reilly, Robert Downey Jr.
Director: Guy Ritchie
Running Time: 129 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: May 14th, 2012

All the way through 2010’s Sherlock Holmes, a shadowy figure lurked in the background who seemed to have a finger in every pie and used the mayhem Sherlock was involved with to his own ends.  In A Game Of Shadows that figure steps forward, with Jared Harris as Professor James Moriarty, who is Sherlock’s intellectual equal, even if he uses his brains for very different ends.

A series of explosions is rocking Europe and threaten to destabilise the already tenuous peace between the nations, with war a very real possibility. As you’d expect, Sherlock is soon deep in this conspiracy and has very quickly worked out that Moriarty is involved. However it’s not enough to know who’s behind it, as there’s no tangible evidence. As a result Holmes must investigate and work out Moriarty’s end game in order to stop the villain. [Read more…]

Avengers 2 Definitely In The Works

May 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In probably the least surprising development in the history of cinema, with The Avengers having made over $700 million in les than two weeks, Disney CEO Robert Iger has confirmed a sequel is in the works and that they hope to use the movie as a springboard for other Marvel franchises.

Iger told CNBC, “Marvel’s The Avengers isn’t just a film. It’s a franchise, from our perspective. It was helped by the success of the Iron Man movies and Captain America: The First Avenger. From the Avengers we get a chance to make Thor 2 and Iron Man 3 and hopefully another Marvel’s The Avengers movie.

“This one film, which was successful, over $700 million, as you said, as of last night, is going to get a number of other films and franchises. We see tremendous interest in products and in games for Marvel’s The Avengers. We have an ability to leverage what was a very fun film done by a great group of film makers into something much bigger for the company and the effect will be prolonged and that’s very, very exciting for us.”

However just because Iger says it, doesn’t mean he’s not going to have difficulty getting the full team back together. While the likes of Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth have lengthy contracts that guarantee their participation in individual sequels and The Avengers 2, Robert Downey’s Jr. contract only runs through Iron Man 3. A new deal would have to be worked out for him, and if they want Joss Whedon back, he’ll also need a new contract. As Marvel is well known for refusing to pay as much as many others in the industry are prepared to, it may prove tough getting both of them back.

Rebecca Hall Replacing Jessica Chastain In Iron Man 3

May 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last month Jessica Chastain was in talks to join the cast of Iron Man 3, playing a scientist. However yesterday she took to Facebook to say that due to a ridiculously busy schedule she won’t be able to slot the Marvel movie in.

However the comic company and director Shane Black aren’t wasting any time (they can’t as the film starts shooting soon), as they’ve already offered the part to The Town’s Rebecca Hall, according to THR. No new details have been revealed about the role, although when Chastain was up for the part it was said she’d be a ‘a sexy scientist every bit as smart as Tony Stark’. Presumably she’ll be someone involved with the nanotechnology that’s said to be a central part of the plot.

Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Kingsley, Andy Lau, Guy Pearce and Don Cheadle also star, with filming set to begin later this month.

Avengers Assemble (Cinema)

April 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Robert Downey Jr.
Director: Joss Whedon
Running Time: 143 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: April 26th, 2012

After years of build up, it’s finally here. While fanboys have long worried The Avengers (or Avengers Assemble as Disney wants us to call it in the UK, apparently because Brits are incapable of telling the difference between a 1960s TV show and a 2012 superhero movie) couldn’t live up to the hype, Joss Whedon has delivered.

It’s an action packed, rip-roaring juggernaut of a film, which pulls off the impressive trick of perfectly balancing a large ensemble cast, so that it feels as if everyone is there for a reason and has their own character arc. [Read more…]

Iron Man 3 May Get Infernal Affairs Star Andy Lau

April 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With The Avengers almost in cinemas, Marvel has started really concentrating on Iron Man 3, which begins shooting next month. Guy Pearce, Ben Kingsley, and Jessica Chastain have all been added to the cast in the last few weeks, and now Twitch reports that Chinese superstar Andy Lau may join them.

According to the report, Lau is in final negotiations to play an old friend of Tony Stark’s, who “represents the technology sector” of China and helps Iron Man defeat The Mandarin. It’s never actually been confirmed The Mandarin is the main villain of the film, although it’s long been rumoured.

If a deal becomes finalised, the Infernal Affairs star joins franchise veterans Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle, along with newcomers Pearce, Kingsley, and Chastain. Shane Black is directing from a screenplay by Drew Pearce.

Jessica Chastain Going Sexy Scientist In Iron Man 3

April 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jessica Chastain seems too good an actress to be taking small parts in superhero movies, but then, if someone phones you up and says ‘Do you wanna be in an Iron Man movie?’, you’re hardly going to say ‘no’! The Oscar nominated actress is now in talks for Iron Man 3, according to Deadline.

It’s not clear exactly how she’ll fit into the plot – or even if she’s on the side of the good guys or not – but she’ll play ‘a sexy scientist every bit as smart as Tony Stark’. Let’s just hope the smarts are what they’ve got Chastain on board for, and not just to parade her around in sexy outfits.

Chastain was apparently offered the role a while ago, but at the time it appeared scheduling issues meant she couldn’t accept, at which point Diane Kruger, Gemma Arterton and Isla Fisher were considered. However the timing problems have now been sorted out and so Chastain is back in talks.

Franchise stars Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle and Scarlett Johansson, will be joined by newcomers Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce in the film, which will start shooting next month.
