We’ve long reached the point when a new Woody Allen movie isn’t something to get excited about anymore, but it’s also certainly not something to dread either. This year he returns with Café Society, another Allen movie we can add to his recent list of his films that are decent enough, but nothing particularly special.
The director is not on-screen this time (although he does narrate), with Jesse Eisenberg stepping in to be Café Society’s 1930s Woody surrogate, a young Jewish New Yorker called Bobby, who’s a bit lost in life and so decides to head to LA. His Uncle Phil (Steve Carell) is a high-powered movie agent who Bobby hopes can help him get his start. Phil hires Bobby to do odd jobs, which brings him into the sphere of Vonnie (Kristen Stewart). A full decade ago Richard Linklater revealed that he was working on an adaptation Darryl Ponicsan‘s Last Flag Flying, a sequel to The Last Detail, which was made into a film in 1973 by Hal Ashby. At the time he was trying to get Randy Quaid and Jack Nicholson to return, but that never happened.
Even when Woody Allen doesn’t star in his own movies, there tends to be a stand-in for him, and it has to be said, he’s picked a good on for Cafe Society in the form of Jesse Eisenberg. Re-teaming him with the often wooden Kristen Stewart may not have been as good an idea, but we will see.
Fox Searchlight’s Battle of the Sexes has been in the works a long time, but now it finally looks like its moving forwards. Emma Stone has been attached for quite a long time (although she was briefly replaced by Brie Larson when it looked like schedules wouldn’t work out) and was joined more recently by Steve Carell. Now
The Big Short certainly has an impressive cast – including Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, Melissa Leo, Brad Pitt, Marisa Tomei, Karen Gillan and Selena Gomez – all attracted by a major studio movie that takes on the causes of the financial crisis, and those who saw what was coming when no one else could.
