Men In Black III Tops Memorial Day US Box Office

The Avengers has finally been toppled from the top of the US box office, with Men In Black 3 taking $70 million over the Memorial Day weekend. It’s not quite the $75-$80 million that Sony was hoping for it’s not a bad start, and the studio certainly can’t be upset that worldwide the movie took just over $200 million, suggesting it’ll make back its hefty investment in the movie even if it doesn’t end up as profitable as the earlier films in the series.

The only other new entry in the top 10 is Chernobyl Diaries, which took a soft $9.3 million. Although not as much as some expected, as it’s a low budget flick, it could be worse.

Outside the top 10, Moonrise Kingdom got off to a great start, taking $669,000 on only four screens for an incredibly impressive per screen average of $167,000. It’s an incredibly good opening and suggests the Wes Anderson movie will do very well as it expands onto more screens over the coming week.

Avengers Sinks Battleship At US Box Office

The Avengers once again smashed allcomers at the US box office, taking another $55 million over the weekend to take its total to an incredibly impressive $457 million. It believed that its continued success at attracting repeat business is one of the reasons Universal’s Battleship opened to a disappointing $25 million, well below the $35-$40 million that had been expected.

It’s a big blow to the film, which may have made $200 million outside the US, but is unlikely to break $100 million in America, ensuring the film will make a loss. So while Universal was hoping for a Transformers style franchise, that’s no longer likely to happen.

It wasn’t the only film that underplayed as The Dictator took $17 million over the weekend for a total of $25 million since it opened last Wednesday. Thankfully though, it took $45 million overseas in the terriories it opened in, ensuring that while the US has been weak, it should make a profit worldwide.

Even a film designed to attract a very different audience to the male dominated summer blockbusters failed to attract an audience, with What To Expect When You’re Expecting taking just $10.5 million. Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of May 18th-20th.

Avengers Becomes First Film To Make $100 Million In Its Second Weekend

After its record-breaking $207 million opening in the US last week, The Avengers isn’t done with setting firsts, as it’s become the first movie to ever make $100 at the North American box office in its second weekend, taking $103 million. On the way to that it became the fastest film ever to reach $300 and $350 million.

The film had plenty to cheer worldwide too, and globally its take now stands at $1.03, equalling Avatar and Harry 8’s record of getting there in only 17 days, an achievement made more impressive by the fact those film opened pretty much everywhere on the same day, while Avengers didn’t reach the US until a week and a half after its first openings in some other countries.

While Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows had been expected to open in the $35 million range, it ended up disappointing with only $25 million. It’s a lot softer than Warner Bros. would have been hoping and won’t be helped by relatively poor word of mouth over the coming weeks.

The only other new entry in the top 10 was the Eva Mendes comedy-drama Girl In Progress, which took $1.35 million to place 10th on the chart. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel also made its first appearance in the top 10, after expanding onto more screens following its limited opening last week. The movie took $2.6 million to place eighth.

Dark Shadows has always been a somewhat problematic proposition for a film conversion, especially as it’s been brought to the screen by people who are obviously in love with the original US soap opera that ran between 1966 and 1971. The show ran for over 1,000 episodes and featured a vast array of characters and all sorts of different supernatural shenanigans. Those then needed to be distilled down to a single movie that’ll work for a generation who’ve never seen the show.

It’s a challenge that Dark Shadows only partially succeeds in, with the whole thing having the whiff of being filled things Johnny Depp and Tim Burton wanted to include, but which might have been better to have dispensed with. [Read more…]

Listen To Danny Elfman’s Score For Dark Shadows

Dark Shadows is just a few weeks away, but if you’re interested in Danny Elfman’s score for the film, you’ll be extremely pleased to hear that not only is it now available, but you can listen to it online over at Warner Bros.’ Water Tower Music. While the ability to listen to the whole thing in one go seems a tad temperamental, even if you have trouble to that you can listen to 90 second cuts of individual tracks to give you a taste of the movie.

Two New Dark Shadows TV Spots

When the trailer for Dark Shadows arrived recently, it looked a lot of fun, but it was difficult to work out exactly what it was all about and what tone it was going for. Now two TV spots have shown up which give a slightly better look at the movie, giving us a feel for the humour and storyline. It certainly looks like it could be a lot of fun. The film’s out May 11th.

Nine Great New Dark Shadows Character Posters

It’s not too long now until Dark Shadows hits cinemas on May 11th. A trailer and a poster arrived a couple of days ago, and now nine rather cool character posters have debuted, which are incredibly brightly coloured to give it the late-60s/early-70s vibe the film is going for (which is the era the supernatural soap it’s based on aired on US TV).

In the film, Johnny Depp plays Barnabas Collins, who was turned into a vampire by a witch (Eva Green) in the 18th Century and then buried alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to old home, Collinwood Manor, to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Jonny Lee Miller, Jackie Earle Haley, Chloe Moretz and Gulliver McGrath also star.

It’s odd that it’s taken so long, but a trailer for Dark Shadows is finally here. Based on a 1960s supernatural US soap opera, the film reunites Tim Burton and Johnny Depp for a film that from this trailer looks like it’ll be deliberately silly but fun, and it seem like it’ll be the most Burton-looking movie we’ve seen in a while, with plenty of gothic flourishes. In the film, Johnny Depp plays Barnabas Collins, who was turned into a vampire by a witch in the 18th Century and then buried alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to old home, Collinwood Manor, to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Jonny Lee Miller, Jackie Earle Haley, Chloe Moretz and Gulliver McGrath also star. The film’s out May 11th.

First Dark Shadows Footage Online

As the Tim Burton & Johnny Depp collaboration Dark Shadows is due in cinemas on May 11th, you’d have thought we’d have seen more than a few images by now. However it appears Warner is planning on more of a blitz attack, hoping to penetrate the audience’s consciousness with a big campaign starting now and going on until the release. Now the first, very brief footage is online, which is part of a promo for Ellen, which we’ve embedded above. It’s incredibly short but still worth a look. It arrives ahead of the trailer, which STYD promises will be online tomorrow, March 15th. So watch out for that!

Here’s the lengthy synopsis: In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet–or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. Eva Green Stares Down Johnny Depp In New Dark Shadows Image

Dark Shadows arrives in cinemas in May, and while we wait for a trailer, the images we’ve seen have certainly been intriguing. The latest above is from Luces Camara Blog, and shows a blonde Eva Green staring down a very pale Johnny Depp.

Green plays witch Angelique Bouchard who has a long history with Depp’s vampire, Barnabas Collins.

If you’ve been wondering what sort of tone the Tim Burton movie, which is based on a 1960s US supernatural soap opera, will have, screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith has been talking to Badass Digest and told then, “The tone of the movie is soap operatic. It’s heightened. Everything is heightened and grand. Johnny is just dug in and big. [Starts hamming it up] ‘Didn’t you see? How… could you? My god, woman!’ There’s an absurdist element to it. It’s very funny. I don’t think people are expecting it to be as funny as it is.”
