The Dark Tower (Blu-ray Review) – The Stephen King fantasy saga finally makes it to the screen

December 11, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, Tom Taylor, Jackie Earle Haley, Katheryn Winnick
Director: Nikolaj Arcel
Running Time: 95 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: December 11th 2017 (UK)

It’s a movie 10-years in the making (at least this attempt took 10 year), but when it arrived in cinemas The Dark Tower was met with negative reviews and muted box office. It currently has a pretty abysmal 16% on RottenTomatoes and just 5.9/10 from viewers on IMDB. So is it really that bad? No, it’s not, but its easy to understand why it’s had such bad reactions.

The film focuses on teenager Jake (Tom Taylor), who’s been having strange visions of a giant tower at the centre of the universe and the ‘Man In Black’ (Matthew McConaughey), who’s determined to destroy it. While those around him are beginning to think Jake is becoming unhinged, the teen discovers what he’s been seeing is real. [Read more…]

RoboCop (2014) (DVD Review)

June 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley
Director: Jose Padilha
Running Time: 117 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: June 9th 2014 (UK)

Unlike some movies, there was no real reason not to remake Robocop. Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 original is a great movie, but it leaves plenty of room for reinvention in the 21st Century. Indeed it’s probably why when MGM started digging around in their back catalogue for film to do-over, RoboCop was near the top of the list.

Although it took several years to actually get it done, the results are now here with Jose Padilha (Elite Squad) directing and Joel Kinnaman in the title role. [Read more…]

Jackie Earle Haley, James Badge Dale & Colin Hanks Join Parkland

January 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

James-Badge-DaleAn impressive cast is lining up for the ensemble drama Parkland, likely attracted to being part of something that will help commemorate the 50th anniversary of the assassination of JFK this November. Shooting on the movie has just started, and it’s been announced that the likes of James Badge Dale, Jackie Earle Haley, Colin Hanks, David Harbour, and Ron Livingston have all joined the cast.

They’ll star alongside the previously announced Paul Giamatti, Billy Bob Thornton, Jacki Weaver, Marcia Gay Harden, Zac Efron, and Jeremy Strong.

The film is about the chaotic events that occurred at Parkland Hospital in Dallas on the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, November 22nd 1963. Part thriller, part real-time drama, Parkland the story of unexceptional people fighting for survival and reaching for heroism in an exceptional time.

Parkland certainly has a place in American history, as it’s also where both JFK’s assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, and Oswald’s killer, Jack Ruby, died.

Award-winning journalist and novelist Peter Landesman makes his directorial debut with the movie, working from his own screenplay, which is based on the book, Reclaiming History: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy, by Vincent Bugliosi. The hope is to release the movie in time for the 50th anniversary.

Nine Great New Dark Shadows Character Posters

March 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s not too long now until Dark Shadows hits cinemas on May 11th. A trailer and a poster arrived a couple of days ago, and now nine rather cool character posters have debuted, which are incredibly brightly coloured to give it the late-60s/early-70s vibe the film is going for (which is the era the supernatural soap it’s based on aired on US TV).

In the film, Johnny Depp plays Barnabas Collins, who was turned into a vampire by a witch (Eva Green) in the 18th Century and then buried alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to old home, Collinwood Manor, to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Jonny Lee Miller, Jackie Earle Haley, Chloe Moretz and Gulliver McGrath also star.

Dark Shadows Trailer

March 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s odd that it’s taken so long, but a trailer for Dark Shadows is finally here. Based on a 1960s supernatural US soap opera, the film reunites Tim Burton and Johnny Depp for a film that from this trailer looks like it’ll be deliberately silly but fun, and it seem like it’ll be the most Burton-looking movie we’ve seen in a while, with plenty of gothic flourishes. In the film, Johnny Depp plays Barnabas Collins, who was turned into a vampire by a witch in the 18th Century and then buried alive. The film’s out May 11th.
