2012 London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival Programme Announced

February 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

North Sea Texas

After revealing a couple of weeks ago that the BFI London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival would open with Cloudburst, starring Oscar-winners Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker, the British Film Institute has now revealed the full festival line-up.

The festival runs from from 23rd March-1st April and will offer a varied programme of feature films, special events, shorts, archive classics, experimental and erotic works. While it will open with Cloudburst, it’s now been revealed that the Festival will close with Bavo Defurne’s North Sea Texas, a compelling tale of teenage longing set in a Belgian coastal town.

There are also two centrepiece screenings of powerful, award-winning dramas. Circumstance is an affecting account of a lesbian coming-of-age in contemporary Tehran, which won the Audience Award at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, while Absent is the unpredictable tale of a 16-year-old’s attempt to get close to his teacher, which won the Teddy Award at the 2011 Berlin Film Festival.

Other highlights on the programme include The Perfect Family, starring Kathleen Turner as a Catholic woman coming to terms with her daughter’s sexuality, while Gun Hill Road tells the story of an ex-con struggling to accept that his teenage son is transitioning to female, and features a strong performance by young trans actor Harmony Santana.

There’ll also be an eclectic programme of special events, such as Brian Lobel and Aaron Wright’s Cruising for Art, which is a film-themed participatory theatre project. Transgender Representation – Are We Nearly There Yet? will look at the last five years of trans film and television, while Families Like Ours features films that discuss LGBT parenting from the point of view of parents, pupils and teachers.

After budget cuts last year, a wave of popular and industry support has ensured a renewed commitment to the festival’s future, with the 2012 programme 30% larger than the 2011 event, consisting of 53 features and 67 shorts.

You can find the full programme here (click for PDF), which also includes screening of the much praised lesbian drama Pariah, as well as classics with gay themes such as Spartacus and Suddenly Last Summer.

Daniel Radcliffe Debuts A PSA For The Trevor Project

February 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Having known a lot of gay people all his life, Harry Potter (who for some reason now insists on being called Daniel Radcliffe) has always been pro-gay, and in the last few year has become one of the most vocal straight allies of the gay community, being active with various LGBT organisations that try to make an difference in the lives of lesbian & gay people.

He’s now made a Public Service Announcement for The Trevor Project, a crisis intervention and suicide prevention service for LGBT and questioning youth, which Radcliffe has supported for the last three years. The PSA debuted after an episode of Glee in the US, which focused on the attempted suicide of one of the characters who is dealing with their sexuality.

Radcliffe has said that working with The Trevor Project has taught him the importance of being a straight ally. “‘When we let someone know that we accept them for who they are and that we are safe to talk to, we can help save lives. It’s as simple as that,” he says.

Take a look at the 30 second PSA above.

Justin Timberlake Closer To Playing Elton John In Biopic

February 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago reports started circulating that Elton John wanted Justin Timberlake to play him in a Moulin Rouge-style biopic of his life that the singer is busy planning. Timberlake seemed interested, and now Elton’s hubby (and co-producer on the movie), David Furnish, has confirmed Justin is likely to take the role, as long as they can find a director everyone’s happy with.

Furnish told E! News: ‘We’re searching for a director. It’s important we all share the same vision. Elton and Justin have had conversations about it. Justin also says he has to feel comfortable with the director and the director has to be comfortable with Justin. The chemistry is really important. There’s no race to make this. We’re just going to take the time to make it right.’

Elton has previously said the movie will be a “surreal look at my life, and not just a factual look at my life, more in the manner of a Moulin Rouge”. The singer, who’s never been averse to a bit of flamboyance, added that a “normal biopic” would be inappropriate “because my life hasn’t been like that”.

Brandon Routh Playing Gay In TV Pilot, Partners

February 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Superman is going gay! Well, an actor who once played Superman is playing gay at lease. Brandon Routh has landed a role in an upcoming TV pilot, playing as the boyfriend of Ugly Betty star and real-life homo Michael Urie.

The show, called Partners, is from Will & Grace creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan and centres on lifelong friends and business partners, Charlie (Sophia Bush), who is straight, and Louis (Urie), who is gay. According to Deadline, Routh will play Louis’ longterm boyfriend, a reformed alcoholic, club-hopping model, who’s now a sober, vegan nurse.

Just because they’re making a pilot doesn’t mean it’ll become a series, but with Mutchnick and Kohan behind the camera, it’s certainly got pedigree.

Superman Returns may not have given Routh a massive movie career, but perhaps his career will get new life on TV. He’s certainly pretty, so the more we see of him the better!

Struck By Lightning Trailer

February 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Chris Colfer made a huge splash playing the camp and loveable Kurt on Glee, and now despite only being 21, he’s showing off a whole new talent by not only starring in Struck By Lightning, but writing the script too. Christina Hendricks and Dermot Mulroney also star in the indie flick, which sees Colfer as a young man who, after being struck and killed by lightning, recounts the way he blackmailed his fellow classmates into contributing to his literary magazine.

Kristen Bell Put Off Marriage By Lack Of Equality

February 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kristen Bell and comedian/actor Dax Shepard have been dating for a long time, but have never gone down the aisle and gotten married. The actress often gets asked about it, but has only now decided to divulge the reason why.

The Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Veronica Mars star tells The Advocate, ‘I get a ton of questions about when Dax and I are getting married. I usually blow them off because it’s nobody’s business. To be honest with you – and this is the first time I’ve ever said this to a journalist, but it feels like the perfect time and place – the reason we’re not rushing to get married is because I don’t feel appropriate taking advantage of a right that’s denied to my best friends. That’s why we’ve been so hesitant.’

‘Dax and I have talked about it a lot, and this issue is very important to both of us. We’re just standing up for what we believe in. Period.’

Bell isn’t the only Hollywood celeb who has decided not to marry while that right is denied to same sex couples. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie also made a pledge not to marry until equality had been achieved (although Brad recently said ‘I don’t think we’ll be able to hold out’), and NCIS’s Pauley Perette and her fiance Thomas Arklie have done the same.

Bell is hopeful though that marriage equality will be achieved, saying ‘In about 10 years, knock on wood, I think we’re going to be embarrassed as a nation about our behavior on this issue. It’s going to be exactly like what happened in 1970, when people were like, ‘Whoa, 1960 sucked. We should’ve let everyone ride the bus.”

Bell has plenty more to say about her gay friends and thoughts of LGBT issues over at The Advocate, so head over there and have a read.

‘I get a ton of questions about when Dax and I are getting married,’ she tells The Advocate. ‘I usually blow them off because it’s nobody’s business. To be honest with you — and this is the first time I’ve ever said this to a journalist, but it feels like the perfect time and place — the reason we’re not rushing to get married is because I don’t feel appropriate taking advantage of a right that’s denied to my best friends. Cuba Gooding Jr’s Dad Asked Tom Cruise If He Was Gay

February 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rumours that Tom Cruise is secretly gay have followed him around ever since his earliest days in Hollywood, despite there being little substantive evidence that it’s true. However few people have dared to directly ask him about it, except for Cuba Gooding Jr’s father, that is!

During an appearance on tonight Graham Norton Show, Cuba recounted what happened when his dad visited him on the set of Jerry Maguire. Gooding Jr. says, “He gave Tom Cruise a hug and said, ‘I love you man. Now seriously, are you gay or not?’ I almost fainted and thought, please Lord, let me disappear. Tom just laughed and said ‘no’.”

Cuba then jokingly says that he subsequently banned his father from the film set.

Cruise has long dealt with gay rumours and on occasion he’s even sued when men have tried make money by claiming to have slept with him (it should be noted there’s been little evidence the people he sued were telling the truth). Some have suggested he encouraged the rumours when he was a young actor working his way up the fame ladder, but has since been unable to get rid of them, despite marriages to Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes.

Brett Ratner Directing Pro-Gay Film Series For GLAAD

February 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Brett Ratner may have thought he was just making a flip comment when he said at a screening of his recent movie Tower Heist, ‘Rehearsal’s for fags’, but he’s still feeling the fallout from it.

Within a few days he’d been made to step down from his job as the producer of the Oscar ceremony, had to make a series of public apologies, got a “well-deserved earful from many of the people I admire most”, and discovered that many in Tinsel Town didn’t want anything to do with him. In his favour, from the moment the comment went public, he has sincerely seemed to want to make amends for what he’s well aware was a thoughtless, insensitive thing to say.

His rehabilitation continues with the news that he’s agreed to produce and direct a GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) video campaign to promote equality for gay and trans people. The video series will feature celebrities, athletes, musicians and politicians speaking out in support of equality. Participants will share personal stories about why and how they support gay and trans equality.

Ratner said of the project: “Working together with GLAAD has been a very positive and enlightening experience for me, and I could not be more pleased to be developing this crucial campaign to help educate people that we all share the same humanity. I am excited to get to work on this program and hope that minds and hearts are opened by what we create.”

Herndon Graddick, Senior Director of Programs and Communications at GLAAD said: “Straight allies are crucial to creating a culture in which LGBT people are respected and supported. We look forward to working with Brett and these other inspiring Americans who are speaking out and standing up for their LGBT friends, family members, neighbors and coworkers.”

Beauty (Skoonheid) Trailer – Winner of the Queer Palm at Cannes

February 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Winner of the Queer Palm at the Cannes Film Festival 2011 and officially selected for 55th BFI London Film Festival, Oliver Hermanus’ provocative Beauty is due to be released in UK by Peccadillo Pictures on 20th April, but to prepare us, the trailer has now dropped.
Here’s the synopsis: ‘Francois (Deon Lotz) lives a skillfully controlled, well managed life, in Bloemfontein, South Africa’s so-called ‘City of Roses’. He’s a devoted husband and father, but constantly battling with his repressed desires. However, when he meets Christian (Charlie Keegan), the engaging, handsome son of a long-lost friend, his obsessions become irrepressible and threaten to rip apart his long-maintained respectability.
‘BEAUTY contains powerful scenes that recall A Ma Soeur, Mysterious Skin and the cinema of Michael Haneke, the challenging the viewer with its unflinching exploration of social taboos in the conservative environment of contemporary South Africa that also have universal resonance.’
Hmmm, certainly sounds like one to look out for when it arrives in UK cinemas in April.

Gay Director Terence Davies Sets Sights On Sunset Song

February 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There were 11 years between director Terence Davies’ The House Of Mirth and last year’sThe Deep Blue Sea, but it seems that despite saying he doesn’t actually like directing all that much, it won’t take him as long to get his next movie on screen.

Variety reports that he’s now bringing to fruition a long-cherished project called Sunset Song. Producer Bob Last announced at the Berlin Film Festival that the project has now moved to the casting stage, with a shoot planned for either later this year or early 2013 in Scotland and Sweden.

Davies must be pleased The Deep Blue Sea was so well received as he’s been trying to get Sunset Song made for over a decade, but didn’t get much traction until people had seen his Rachel Weitz starring flick. The planned movie is based on Lewis Grassic Gibson’s 1932 novel about farmer’s daughter, Chris Guthrie, who struggle against life filled with pain and family dysfunction. It’s certainly not a jolly tale, as it opens with Chris’ mother committing suicide and poisoning two of her other children.

Davies career is certainly an interesting one, with much of his directing career, such as The Terence Davies Trilogy and Distant Voices Still Live, often seeming like a direct response to his difficulty coming to terms with his sexuality (he still says he hates being gay) and his childhood. Sunset Song seems like another indirect response to the latter, but we’ll have to wait and see.
