Sam Raimi Is Getting Ready To Start World War 3

February 28, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sam-raimi

It seems a bit extreme for a film director to want to start World War 3, but that’s just what Sam Raimi is doing. Variety reports that he’s set to helm a movie by that name, which he’s currently developing.

Perhaps most worryingly for a film with that title is that it’s based on a non-fiction source, George Friedman’s book ‘The Next 100 Years’. The sysnopsis describes it as, ‘A fascinating, eye-opening and often shocking look at what lies ahead for the U.S. and the world from one of our most incisive futurists.

I’n his thought-provoking new book, George Friedman, founder of STRATFOR — the preeminent private intelligence and forecasting firm — focuses on what he knows best, the future. Positing that civilization is at the dawn of a new era, he offers a lucid, highly readable forecast of the changes we can expect around the world during the twenty-first century all based on his own thorough analysis and research. For example, The U.S.-Jihadist war will be replaced by a new cold war with Russia; China’s role as a world power will diminish; Mexico will become an important force on the geopolitical stage; and new technologies and cultural trends will radically alter the way we live (and fight wars). Riveting reading from first to last, “The Next 100 Years” is a fascinating exploration of what the future holds for all of us.’

Of course, whether any of that will actually happen is impossible to know, but it certainly gives Raimi an interesting sandbox to play in.

Wolverine’s James Mangold Set To Direct Disney’s Captain Nemo

February 28, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For quite a few years now, Disney has been developing a movie based around Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. However, it’s had a few problems, not least David Fincher spending ages putting it together but then leaving due to budget disagreements.

Now it’s coming back together with Wolverine’s James Mangold set to direct, according to THR.

The movie will be a loose adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, which is currently going under the title Captain Nemo. Beyond that, there’s not too much news on exactly what direction the film will take on the story of Captain Nemo and his incredible submarine, the Nautilus.

It’s not likely we’ll see the movie for a while though, as Mangold is currently developing another Wolverine movies, which will almost certainly come before Nemo.

Steven Spielberg is going back into proper blockbuster territory with Ready Player One, which has just found its lead in actor Tye Sheridan (who’s also the new Scott Summers/Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse), according to TheWrap. He joins the previously cast Olivia Cooke and Ben Mendelsohn.

The movie will be based on Ernie Cline’s novel. Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade’s devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world’s digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator’s obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade’s going to survive, he’ll have to win—and confront the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.’

Sheridan will be the man playing Wade. The film should be in cinemas December 15th, 2017.

Michael B. Jordan Planning Remake Of The Thomas Crown Affair

February 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-b-jordanIt’s deja vu all over again, as while the classic 1968 movie The Thomas Crown Affair was remake with Pierce Brosnan in the lead role in 1999, it looks like it’s getting another do-over. THR reports that Michael B. Jordan is hoping to star in a new version of the story, with MGM backing the film.

Assuming it follows the story of the original, Creed and Fantastic Four star Jordan will be ‘a wealthy businessman who conducted robberies on the side. When an insurance investigator… starts to track him down, the two begin an affair even as Crown plans another heist.’

The remake was apparently Jordan’s idea, and MGM seems to like it. However it’s very early days as no writers or a director are attached as yet. It’s also proof that Hollywood sees a big future for the young actor.

Hamilton Star Lin-Manuel Miranda Is Joining The Mary Poppins Sequel

February 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lin-Manuel-MirandaA few days ago it was revealed that Emily Blunt was in talks to play Mary Poppins in Disney’s planned new take on the classic nanny character (they’re keen to say it’s not a sequel, even though it is). Now she may have the person who would be the equivalent of her Dick Van Dyke, as Variety reports that Lin-Manuel Miranda, best known for starring in (and writing the songs for) the Broadway hit Hamilton, is in negotiations for the film.

Assuming he signs on, Miranda would play ‘Jack, a lamplighter resembling the character of Bert, who was famously played by Dick Van Dyke’.

While the 1960s movie was mainly based in the first of Travers’ books, the new movie will explore Mary’s further adventures with the Banks family and beyond as illustrated by Travers’ seven additional novels. The most recent reports suggest it will see Mary returning to help a grown-up Michael and Jane Banks after a major events takes place in their lives.

Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Smash) will write the songs, and the film apparently has the support of original Mary Poppins co-composer, Richard Sherman. Rob Marshall is set to direct.

First Look At ‘Alpha Balls’ Dwayne Johnson & Zac Efron On The Baywatch Set

February 23, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

baywatch-dwayne-johnson-zac-efron-set-picConsidering that it often seems like Zac Efron rarely does anything with his shirt off, it’s almost miraculous that he manages to wear one in the first pic from the set the Baywatch movie – especially considering the amount the skin the TV show was known for showing. However it was The Rock who released the pic via instagram, letting us know the movie has now started shooting.

He adds, ‘#BAYWATCH Day 1. My character “Mitch Buchannon” just gave @zacefron’s character “Matt Brody” the all important beach speech about what it means to have manly “Alpha balls”. Zac’s ad-libbed responses were brilliant! Talented and great dude. World get ready to have some fun, ’cause the beach will never be the same again.’

Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses) is directing the movie, with a 2017 release date set. Take a look at the full first look pic below.

Pete’s Dragon Teaser Trailer – A new take on the tale of a boy and his beast

February 22, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

petes-dragon-pic1The first teaser trailer for Disney’s new take on the part-animated family gilm Pete’s Dragon shows that it is going to be a very different movie from the original. Indeed, other than the title it doesn’t look like there’s going to be a vast amount to link the two.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A reimagining of Disney’s cherished family film, “Pete’s Dragon” is the adventure of an orphaned boy named Pete and his best friend Elliott, who just so happens to be a dragon. “Pete’s Dragon” stars Bryce Dallas Howard (“Jurassic World”), Oakes Fegley (“This is Where I Leave You”), Wes Bentley (“The Hunger Games”), Karl Urban (“Star Trek”), Oona Laurence (“Southpaw”) and Oscar® winner Robert Redford (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier”). The film, which is directed by David Lowery (“Ain’t Them Bodies Saints”), is written by Lowery & Toby Halbrooks based on a story by Seton I. Miller and S.S. Field and produced by Jim Whitaker, p.g.a. (“The Finest Hours,” “Friday Night Lights”), with Barrie M. Osborne (“The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” “The Great Gatsby”) serving as executive producer.

‘For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon. Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon” flies into UK Cinemas on August 12, 2016.’
