New Macbeth Trailer – Michael Fassbender & Marion Cotillard take on the Scottish play

September 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

macbeth-slide2Shakespeare on screen has a very mixed history, but director Justin Kurzel (Snow Town) and stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard are hope they’ve created the definitive movie version of Macbeth – and from the evidence of this trailer, it looks like they could have done it.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The highly anticipated tale of war, ambition, love, murder and betrayal, directed by Justin Kurzel (Snowtown) and starring Academy-Award nominee Michael Fassbender (Twelve Years A Slave, Shame, Hunger) and Academy-Award winner Marion Cotillard (Two Days, One Night, La Vie En Rose) will see a UK release on OCTOBER 2nd.

‘Macbeth is the story of a fearless warrior and inspiring leader brought low by ambition and desire. A thrilling interpretation of the dramatic realities of the times and a reimagining of what wartime must have been like for one of literature’s most famous and compelling characters, a story of all-consuming passion and ambition set in war torn Scotland.

‘MACBETH is from the producers of The King’s Speech and Shame. MACBETH also stars Paddy Considine (The Bourne Ultimatum), David Thewlis (the Harry Potter series), Sean Harris (Prometheus), Jack Reynor (What Richard Did) and Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby).’

It’ll be in UK cinemas in October. [Read more…]

Nicholas Hoult To Star In JD Salinger Biopic, Rebel In The Rye

September 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Nicholas-HoultOther than for writing Catcher In The Rye, author JD Salinger is mainly known for not writing a huge amount else and also being a bit of a recluse. However now Rebel In The Rye wants to take us into his life and what led to him creating the infamous Holden Caulfield.

Alongside the announcement of the film comes the news that Nicholas Hoult will play the lead role.

It’s promised that the film ‘takes us on a journey into the life and mind of the legendary and secretive author and tells the story of the birth of The Catcher in the Rye. As the author who captivated a generation, JD Salinger soared to the heights of the literary world but left it all behind for a life of seclusion. Through his rebellious youth, the bloody front lines of World War 2, enduring great love and terrible loss, a life of rejection to the pages of The New Yorker, and the PTSD-fueled writer’s block which led to a spiritual awakening.’

Danny Strong (who co-created Empire and wrote the scripts for the likes of Hunger Games: Mockingjay and The Butler) will write and direct the movie. It’s not clear when the movie will shoot, but it’ll be looking for buyers at the Toronto International Film Festival.

August 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

armie-hammerA pretty good cast is coming together for Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals, with Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Shannon and Aaron Taylor-Johnson already attached to star. Now THR reports that Armie Hammer is set to join them.

Adapted from Austin Wright’s 1993 novel Tony And Susan, Nocturnal Animals sees, ‘The first of the two-part story follows a woman (Adams) who receives a book manuscript from her ex-husband, who she left 20 years earlier, asking for her opinion. The second part revolves around a man (Gyllenhaal) whose family vacation turns violent, which is the story in the manuscript that Adams’ character has been asked to read.

Mads Mikkelsen Sought For Doctor Strange Villain Role

August 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mads-mikkelsenThe cast of Marvel’s Doctor Strange is coming together, with Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role, and Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejiofor set to co-star.

Now they’re closing in Mads Mikkelsen, who is in early talks to play one of the movie’s villains. No offer has been made as yet, but the Hannibal and Casino Royale star is expected to get one soon, according to Variety.

In the film, ‘Cumberbatch will play Stephen Vincent Strange, a former neurosurgeon who becomes the next Sorcerer Supreme and primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Marvel Comics artist Steve Ditko created the character in 1963. Swinton will play Strange’s mentor, the Ancient One, while Ejiofor will appear as Baron Mordo, who also studies magic under the Ancient One in the comic books, before becoming Doctor Strange’s nemesis.’

Anne Hathaway Wants To Get In The Shower For An Alien Invasion Comedy

August 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

anne-hathawayAnne Hathaway is putting on her producer’s hat and she’s also planning to star in The Shower. While I’m sure there are many people who very much like the idea of Anna Hathaway in the shower, this refers to meteor and baby showers rather than anything to do with water.

THR reports that, ‘The story begins with a bright baby shower when the guests find themselves under darker skies: a meteor shower. These meteors, however, turn men into blood-hungry aliens and the women must fight to not only save themselves but also the world.’

Jac Schaeffer wrote the script, which made last year’s Black List of the best unproduced screenplays. No director is attached, but they’re hoping to get one soon before taking the project to the studios.

First Look At Michael Fassbender In Character For Assassin’s Creed

August 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

assassins-creed-first-lookI’d almost forgotten the videogame series Assassin’s Creed was getting a movie, partly because it’s been in the works for so far. However, while game to movies have a bad reputation, you have to hope that the presence of Michael Fassbender might raise this one above the rest. It also appears they’re trying to make the film it’s own animal, as Fassbender will play a character created specifically for the movie.

He’s certainly looking good in the central role, as shown in this first promo image (which debuted on Yahoo!), which echoes the game covers while simultaneously looking suitably historical.

Alongside the image comes a synopsis: ‘[Callum] Lynch discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day.’

The movie will reunite director Justin Kurzel with his Macbeth stars Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, with Michael Kenneth Williams and Ariane Labed also set to star.

Robert Pattinson Up For Claire Denis’ New Sci-fi Project

August 26, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Robert-PattinsonSince The Twilight Saga ended, Robert Pattinson has seemed to steer away from mainstream projects – although he does have the period adventure The Lost City Of Z coming up. You’d think a sci-fi flick would be a shameless bid for box office dollars, but when it’s directed by Claire Denis (Beau Travail) from a script by White Teeth’s Zadie Smith and her husband Nick Laird, it suggests this may be something unusual.

ScreenDaily has the news that Pattinson will star in Denis’ ambitious English-language debut, although what we still don’t know are the exact details of the plot. What we are aware of though is that it takes ‘place beyond the solar system in a future that seems like the present’.

Beyond Pattinson, Denis is pulling together an interesting bunch of people to help put the film together, including ‘Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, known for his Tate Modern installation The Weather Project; astrophysicist Aurélien Barrau, known for his work on black holes and cosmology; and Stuart Staples of indie band Tindersticks.’

The plan is to start shooting early next year.

Matt Damon Puts On His Spacesuit In A New The Martian Poster

August 26, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The-Martian-Launch-One-SheetHow would you like to be stranded on Mars? Doesn’t sound much fun, does it? Well, that’s what’s happening to Matt Damon in The Martian, which has debuted a new poster.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, Watney must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission.

‘As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.’

The movie is in UK cinemas September 30th.

Kill Your Friends Trailer – Nicholas Hoult enters the 1990s British music scene

August 24, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kill-your-friends-posterSynopsis: When the road to success is littered with losers and even your closest colleagues are desperate for you to fail, what would you do to make it to the top?

London, 1997; the British music industry is on a winning streak. Britpop bands Blur, Oasis, Radiohead rule the airwaves and Cool Britannia is in full swing. 27-year-old hit chasing A&R man Steven Stelfox (Nicholas Hoult) is slashing and burning his way through the music business, a world where ‘no one knows anything’ and where careers are made and broken by chance and the fickle tastes of the general public – “Yeah, those animals”.

Fuelled by greed, ambition and inhuman quantities of drugs, Stelfox searches for his next hit record amid a relentless orgy of self-gratification. Created by an industry that demands success at any price, as the hits dry up and the industry begins to change, Stelfox takes the concept of ‘killer tunes’ to a murderous new level in a desperate attempt to salvage his career.

Kill Your Friends is a dark, satirical and hysterically funny evisceration of the Nineties music business. A time and place populated by frauds, charlatans and bluffers; where ambition is a higher currency than talent, and where it seems anything can be achieved – as long as you want it badly enough.
