Eli Roth Takes On The Giant Shark Thriller Meg

June 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

eli-rothWhen Steve Allen’s novel Meg, hit shelves in 1997 many saw it as a bit of a successor to Jaws, and figured it wouldn’t be long until it hit the big screen.

However despite numerous attempts (the first of which was scuppered by the release of Deep Blue Sea), it’s never happened, but they haven’t given up, as now Eli Roth is in talks to direct a film version of the prehistoric shark tale, according to THR.

The novel, ‘revolves around two men who band together to neutralize an ancient shark that’s threatening the California coast. The Megaladon, considered one of the largest and most powerful predators in history, can reach a maximum length of 60 feet.’

However with China now the market Hollywood is keen to pander to, the massive beast will now be threatening that country rather than the US, although there will presumably be some Yanks around to save the day.

Dean Georgaris’ script is apparently the thing that got Warner Bros. excited about the possibilities for Meg, and no doubt Jurassic World’s recent success has helped sweeten things. It’s not clear when it will shoot though.

Jason Segel Will Have Collateral Beauty Alongside Hugh Jackman & Rooney Mara

June 16, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jason-segelLast week it was revealed that Hugh Jackman and Rooney Mara had taken the lead roles in Collateral Beauty, with Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) set to direct. Now another actor is in talks for the movie, as Jason Segel is circling the film, according to Variety.

Collateral Beauty is ‘about a New York advertising executive (Jackman) who experiences a deep personal tragedy. When his colleagues devise an unconventional plan to break him out of his depression, the plan works, but not in a way that anyone imagined’.

It’s not clear who Segel will play, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s one of the colleagues trying to help Jackman out.

Allan Loeb wrote the script, with plans to shoot the movie this autumn.

Anna Kendrick & Rebel Wilson Returning For Pitch Perfect 3 In 2017

June 16, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pitch-perfect-2-poster-slideIt seems to be the year for Universal underestimating the popularity of their movies, with Furious 7 and Jurassic World both massively outperforming expectations, and Pitch Perfect 2 also surprising, making $171 million in the US alone.

It certainly wasn’t expected, as while Universal had hoped to make a third Pitch Perfect movie, they’d already decided they’d have to do so without Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson, with Hailee Steinfeld deliberately brought into the second movie so that she could lead a lowed budgeted Part 3. Indeed, the end of Pitch Perfect 2 seemed to suggest the original characters were moving on.

However due to the movie’s huge success, plans have changed and THR reports both Kendrick and Wilson will now be back for Pitch Perfect 3, which has been set for released on July 21st, 2017. Kay Cannon, who wrote the first two films, is also returning, but there’s no news on the plot.

Rupert Wyatt To Direct Channing Tatum In X-Men Spin-Off Gambit

June 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rupert-wyattAfter scoring a major hit with Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, director Rupert Wyatt is heading for the X-Men universe, as Variety reports that he will helm Channing Tatum in Gambit.

There’s no news on the specific plot, but Josh Zetumer has written the script, but it will concentrate on the mutant who, as Wikipedia says, ‘has the ability to mentally create, control, and manipulate pure kinetic energy to his desire. He is also incredibly knowledgeable and skilled in card-throwing, hand-to-hand combat, and the use of a staff. Gambit is known to charge playing cards and other objects with kinetic energy, using them as explosive projectiles.’

Tatum has long been attached to the title role, and it’s believed we will first see him in character in X-Men: Apocalypse, although probably only very briefly and likely in the end credits.

After talking about it for year, Fox is now busy expanding its X-Men universe, with Deadpool due out February 2016, Apocalypse in May and Gambit in October – which certainly seems like a lot of mutants for one year!

Forest Whitaker Joins Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One

June 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

forest-whitakerThe cast for Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One continues to grow and it’s looking good, this time adding Oscar winner Forest Whitaker, according to Variety, and he may join The Crow remake too (it’s means he’ll be spending much of the rest of the year in the UK, as both films shoot in Britain).

As is usual for Star Wars casting news, there’s little info on who he’ll play, but he’ll join the likes of Felicity Jones, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn and Diego Luna in Gareth Edwards’ movie.

Set shortly before the events of A New Hope, Rogue One follows a rogue band of resistance fighters who unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans and bring new hope to the galaxy (AKA the plans that end up stowed away in R2D2 at the beginning of A New Hope). Whitaker could be one of the good guys, or may be joining Mendelsohn on the villainous side.

As for The Crow, while that film is due to start shooting soon, there may be a delay, as Jack Huston has just joined the very long list of actors to drop out of the title role. However once that gets sorted, Whitaker may also join the cast of that movie.

Katherine Waterston Up For Harry Potter Spin-off Fantastic Beasts

June 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

katherine-waterstonThe Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them already has its male lead in the form of Eddie Redmayne, and now they’ve found woman to star opposite him, with THR reporting that Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice) has signed on for the role.

The movie is set 70 years before the Harry Potter movies and follows ‘magiczoologist’ Scamander after he sets out to write the book Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them (which is one of Harry’s textbooks). Waterston will play a witch called Tina (short for Porpetina) who Newt meets on his travels.

There’s also another major female role to be cast, which is Tina’s sister Queenie, with Saoirse Ronan, Dakota Fanning, Lili Simmons, and Alison Sudol said to be in the running.

Fantastic Beasts, which is the first of three planned films, will shoot this year for release at the end of 2016.

New The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Trailer – Henry Cavill & Armie Hammer are looking cool

June 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

man-from-uncle-poster1Having rebooted Sherlock Holmes for a new generation, Guy Ritchie is now bringing the classic 60s series The Man From U.N.C.L.E., with Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer taking over from Robert Vaughn and David McCallum in the lead roles.

Now the main trailer has arrived, along with a poster.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel”) stars as Napoleon Solo opposite Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”) as Illya Kuryakin in director Guy Ritchie’s “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” a fresh take on the hugely popular 1960s television series.

‘Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” centers on CIA agent Solo and KGB agent Kuryakin. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe.

‘“The Man from U.N.C.L.E” also stars Alicia Vikander (“Anna Karenina”), Elizabeth Debicki (“The Great Gatsby”), with Jared Harris (“Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows”), and Hugh Grant as Waverly.’

Zootopia Teaser Trailer – First footage from the Disney animation

June 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zootopia-character-pic1-slideYesterday we posted the first image from Disney’s Zootopia, and now that’s been followed by a teaser trailer that introduces us to more of the movie’s animal society, although here they seem to exist in some sort of Matrix training zone.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The modern mammal metropolis of Zootropolis is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when optimistic Officer Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootropolis,” a comedy-adventure directed by Byron Howard (“Tangled,” “Bolt”) and Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph,” “The Simpsons”) and co-directed by Jared Bush (“Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero”), opens in cinemas Spring, 2016.

“It’s a nod to the great Disney animated animal films we all grew up with, but with a funny, contemporary twist,” said director Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph,” “The Simpsons”).” Our artists and animators did tons of research to integrate true animal behaviours into each of our characters. The world of Zootropolis is fantastic, infused with international flavour that will be relatable to everyone.”’ [Read more…]

The Program Trailer – Ben Foster is Lance Armstrong in Stephen Frears’ biopic

June 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-program-ben-fosterThe moment it became clear Lance Armstrong was finally going to admit to doping during his cycling career, Hollywood immediately jumped in and put several biopics in the works. The first to arrive is The Program, directed by Stephen Frears and with Ben Foster in the lead role.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Academy Award® nominated director Stephen Frears (The Queen, Philomena) and producers Working Title (The Theory Of Everything, Everest, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), comes the true story of the meteoric rise and fall of one of the most celebrated and controversial men in recent history, Lance Armstrong.

‘Inspired by the award winning book “Seven Deadly Sins” by David Walsh, and featuring a stellar cast including Ben Foster, Chris O’Dowd, Guillaume Canet (Tell No One) and Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad), this tense and suspenseful thriller looks at how one of the greatest deceptions in the modern era was uncovered while Armstrong convinced the world he was a hero, winning the Tour de France seven times.’

It’ll be out in the UK towards the end of the year. [Read more…]
