Pacman, Donkey Kong & More Invade Earth In First Pixels Posters

December 16, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pixels-poster3Pixels has the potential to be one of the more interesting films of next summer, as anyone who’s seen the short it’s based on can attest. In that 8-bit video characters attack a city, turning it to pixels in the process. Many have wondered whether that same aesthetic will be brought into the film – and from the evident of these posters, it looks like it will.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In Pixels, when intergalactic aliens misinterpret video-feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war against them, they attack the Earth, using the games as models for their various assaults. President Will Cooper (Kevin James) has to call on his childhood best friend, ’80s video game champion Sam Brenner (Adam Sandler), now a home theater installer, to lead a team of old-school arcaders (Peter Dinklage and Josh Gad) to defeat the aliens and save the planet. Monaghan plays the team’s unique weapons specialist. The action-comedy is directed by Chris Columbus from a story by Tim Herlihy and a screenplay by Tim Herlihy and Timothy Dowling, based on the short film of the same name by Patrick Jean.’

The movie is due out July 24th, 2015, and hopefully we’ll get a trailer soon. [Read more…]

J.K. Simmons Joins Tom Hiddleston In Kong: Skull Island

December 16, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jk-simmonsA few weeks ago Tom Hiddleston became the first actor to sign up to star in Kong: Skull Island (which as the time was just known as Skull Island, before it got a more franchise friendly title). Now he’s got some company, as the always excellent J.K. Simmons has signed up too, according to Variety.

Few specific details have been released about the plot, or indeed either of the actors’ characters, but we do know it will be a prequel to King Kong, and that the movie will be entirely set on Skull Island, the mysterious place full of dinosaurs and monsters, along with giant apes. The speculation is that it will be about how Kong became the last of the giant gorillas, while also giving an explanation for how outsiders new about the island and so set sail to later find and capture Kong.

Back in October screenwriter John Gatins (Need for Speed, Real Steel) signed up to rewrite the original script by Max Borenstein (Godzilla, Seventh Son). Jordan Vogt-Roberts is set to direct back, with March 10th, 2017 release date already pencilled in.

Blackhat Trailer – Chris Hemsworth takes on Michael Mann’s thriller

December 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Blackhat-posterIn the wake of Sony Pictures dealing with the fallout from the raid on its computer and the subsequent leaking of huge amounts of confidential information, Blackhat feels like a very timely movie for Hollywood. A new trailer has been released so we can get a better feel fro Chris Hemsworth’s trip into cyber attack territory.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set within the world of global cybercrime, Legendary’s Blackhat follows a furloughed convict and his American and Chinese partners as they hunt a high-level cybercrime network from Chicago to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta.

‘Directed and produced by Michael Mann, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Viola Davis, Tang Wei and Wang Leehom, and it is written by Morgan Davis Foehl and Mann. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni produce alongside Mann, while Alex Garcia and Eric McLeod serve as the executive producers.’

New Inherent Vice Trailer – Fresh look at Joaquin Phoenix in Paul Thomas Anderson’s film

December 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

inherent-vice-joaquin-phoenixDirected by Oscar nominee Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Oscar nominees Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin and Owen Wilson; Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon and Benicio Del Toro; Katherine Waterston, Martin Short, Jena Malone and Joanna Newsom, Inherent Vice is released in the UK on January 30th 2015.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When private eye Doc Sportello’s (Joaquin Phoenix)ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a loony bin…well, easy for her to say.

‘It’s the tail end of the psychedelic `60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” that’s being way too overused—except this one usually leads to trouble.

‘With a cast of characters that includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, LAPD Detectives, a tenor sax player working undercover, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists… Part surf noir, part psychedelic romp—all Thomas Pynchon.

‘“Inherent Vice,” is the seventh feature from Paul Thomas Anderson and the first ever film adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon novel.’ [Read more…]

Wild Card Trailer – Jason Statham is in trouble with the mob

December 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

wild-card-jason-stathamIn Wild Card Jason Statham spends 90 minutes writing poetry, playing with puppies and pondering the meaning of Sartre’s existentialist philosophy. Ok, no he does, he does what we’d expect and gets involved in some serious action.

The movie is a remake of the 1986 Burt Reynolds film Heat (no, not the Michael Mann one) and also stars Michael Angarano, Sofia Vergara, Jason Alexander, Hope Davis, and Stanley Tucci. Oddly though, while it is a remake, in some respects it’s actually the original, as it uses William Goldman’s initial screenplay, before it was tinkered with and in his opinions made worse for the 1986 version.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Nick Wild (Jason Statham) is a Las Vegas bodyguard with lethal professional skills and a personal gambling problem. When a friend is beaten by a sadistic thug, Nick strikes back, only to find out the thug is the son of a powerful mob boss. Suddenly Nick is plunged into the criminal underworld, chased by enforcers and wanted by the mob. Having raised the stakes, Nick has one last play to change his fortunes… and this time, it’s all or nothing. From two-time Academy®Award-winning writer William Goldman (Best Original Screenplay, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 1969; Best Adapted Screenplay, All the President’s Men, 1976).’

The film’s in US cinemas at the end of January, but no UK date is currently set. [Read more…]

The Gunman Trailer – Sean Penn turns assassin but gets targeted himself

December 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gunman-sean-pennThe Gunman certainly has a great cast, led by Sean Penn alongside Javier Bardem, Idris Elba, Ray Winstone and Mark Rylance. Indeed getting such a cast of luminaries together is surprising as the plot makes it sound like pretty standard stuff – hopefully the film itself will offer something more.

Pierre Morel (Taken) directs based on the novel by Jean-Patrick Manchette.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Deadly professional assassin Martin Terrier returns to Paris after his latest job determined to get out of the game. Ten years ago he made a promise to return to his childhood sweetheart in the south of France. But circumstances put Martin’s attempted retirement on hold: a key target is flying in to Paris, and there is only one man fit for the task of eliminating him. As Martin flees southwards, desperate to return to the crushing mediocrity of life in a backwater town, he finds his former employers will stop at nothing to regain his services for one last job. Bursting with Gallic irony and visceral brutality, The Gunman (originally published in English as The Prone Gunman) is a shocking and sardonic masterpiece from the late, great master of the French crime novel, J-P Manchette.’

A February 20th UK release is set, and it’ll arrive in the US March 30th. [Read more…]

Imitation Game, Pride & Normal Heart Lead A Great Year For LGBT Entertainment In The Golden Globe Nominations

December 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pride-better-slideIt seems far too early for the Awards Season to have started, but with the Oscars recently moving earlier in the year it’s pushed all the other shows up as well. That means that while 2013 hasn’t ended yet and several of the big award contenders are yet to be released, the Golden Globe nominations are already out, ahead of the ceremony on January 11th, 2015 (which is deliberately timed to be handed out just a few days before Oscar nomination ballots are due).

Often seen as the biggest (or at least noisiest) bellweather for the Academy Awards, this year Birdman led the movie list with seven nominations, while Boyhood and The Imitation Game got five each.

On the TV side Fargo led the way with five nominations, while True Detective scored four.

There were some surprises, with Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken being completely shut out, while Pride getting a Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical nomination was impressive for a film that had little awards buzz and which scored just $1.4 million on its US release (despite near universal rave reviews). The hope is that the Golden Globe buzz may encourage a few more Oscar voters to check out the British film about a group of gay men and lesbians who form a bond with the small Welsh villagers during the 1980s miners’ strike.

Imitation Game and Pride led a great year for LGBT entertainment at the Globes, which also included Transparent scoring a nomination for Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical, and the series’ star, Jeffrey Tambor, being acknowledged in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical category.

The Normal Heart was also included with a Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television nomination, while both Mark Ruffalo and Matt Bomer amongst the acting nominees. Similarly Orange Is The New Black is up for Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical, with acting noms for Taylor Schilling and Uzo Aduba.

You can take a look at the full list of nominations below: [Read more…]

Inside Out Trailer – Pixar goes inside the human mind for its latest flick

December 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Inside-Out-pic1-slide2014 is the year without a Pixar movie, but fingers crossed in 2015 we’ll get too, with The Good Dinosaur coming in November and Inside Out in the summer. While we’ve had a teaser for the latter, now it’s time for a proper trailer – and thankfully it looks like once more Pixar has taken a concept that sounds rather strange and turned it into something that could make for a great movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From an adventurous balloon ride above the clouds to a monster-filled metropolis, Academy Award®-winning director Pete Docter (“Monsters, Inc.,” “Up”) has taken audiences to unique and imaginative places. In Disney•Pixar’s original movie “ Inside Out,” he will take us to the most extraordinary location of all—inside the mind.

‘Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.’

It’ll be in US cinemas in June and the UK in July, 2015. [Read more…]

New Hot Tub Time Machine 2 Trailer – Adam Scott, Craig Robinson and co. head for the future

December 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hot-Tub-Time-Machine-2-posterHot Tub Time Machine 2 is making an early bid for least called for sequel of 2015 (no one really wanted the first film all that much), but on the evidence of this trailer, it may actually be better than the first film.

While the first film took the characters back to the 80s in the titular hot tub time machine, this time they’ll be going to the future. As this allows them to know about the future, it means they were able to change their lives – not always for the better. They also meet Adam Scott’s Adam, who’s the son of John Cusack’s character.

A February 20th US release is set, with the movie arriving in the UK two days before that. Take a look at the trailer below, and the new poster above. [Read more…]
