Benedict Cumberbatch Gets His Own Imitation Game Poster

September 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

imitation-game-poster2It’s less than two weeks until the Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game kicks off the BFI London Film Festival, and it’s not long after that that it will arrive in UK cinemas on November 14th.

Ahead of that comes a new poster. Unlike the last time, where Benedict Cumberbatch had his back to us, this one focuses on him completely.

And let’s just ignore the rather cheesy ‘Behind Every Code Is An Enigma’ strapline.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘THE IMITATION GAME is a nail-biting race against time following Alan Turing (pioneer of modern-day computing and credited with cracking the German Enigma code) and his brilliant team at Britain’s top-secret code-breaking centre, Bletchley Park, during the darkest days of World War II. Turing, whose contributions and genius significantly shortened the war, saving thousands of lives, was the eventual victim of an unenlightened British establishment, but his work and legacy live on.’

And yes, like every other mainstream movie about an LGBT subject, what that synopsis is skirting around is that Turing was gay, something the movie itself apparently doesn’t mince words about.

New Ouija Trailer – Fresh look at the creepy spirit board movie

September 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ouija-2014Ouija has been on quite a journey to the screen. It’s been around five years since the idea was first mooted, and in that’s time it’s been planned as a full-on gore-fest, a mega-budget tentpole release and a family friendly adventure film, but it’s finally becomes creep-fest that’s more aimed towards teens and with a relatively modest budget.

If you didn’t know, the reason so much effort went into making a Ouija film is that it was part of Universal’s deal with Hasbro, as it’s the toy company that actually owns the rights to that particular spirit board, which was invented in the late 1800s in the US. (There’s some suspicion Hasbro particularly wanted the movie to help them assert their rights to the Ouija name going into the future).

Here’s the film version’s synopsis: ‘In Ouija, a group of friends must confront their most terrifying fears when they awaken the dark powers of an ancient spirit board. Stiles White directs the supernatural thriller that is produced by Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller (The Purge, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th) alongside Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity and Insidious series, The Purge), Bennett Schneir (Battleship) and Hasbro. Juliet Snowden and Stiles White wrote the script for Ouija, and Universal will distribute the film worldwide.’

You won’t be surprised to hear it’s heading for a Halloween release. [Read more…]

Matthew McConaughey, Chris Nolan & Co. Get New Interstellar Pics

September 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

interstellar-empire-pic1The marketing for Interstellar has certainly kicked up a gear in the last few weeks with new posters and trailers, and now Empire has debuted a sextet of new pics both from the film itself and from the set.

We particularly like how in the image above it appears they’re going into space in a giant dustbuster, although I presume that’s because it needs some CGI to finish it off.

The pics include the likes of Anne Hathaway, Matthew McConaughey and Jessica Chastain, along with direct Christopher Nolan.

They also have a quote from McConaughey about the movie, who says, “This is the grandest adventure I think any of us will ever see on film. This is the biggest film I’ve ever been a part of. This is one of the biggest films anyone’s ever been a part of.”

That’s certainly intriguing.

What we still don’t know if a vast amount about the plot, other than that ‘Interstellar chronicles the adventures of a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.’

It’s due out in November. Take a look at the new pics above and below. [Read more…]

Phil Lord and Chris Miller Circling The Rosie Project

September 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

phil-lord-and-chris-millerPhil Lord and Chris Miller are rare for having huge success in both the live-action and animation arenas. It’s allowed them to have an incredible year where The Lego Movie grossed $468 million worldwide, while 22 Jump Street made $324 million.

Now they’re plotting future moves, with Deadline reporting that they’re circling The Rosie Project.

Based on Graeme Simison’s novel, the movie is about genetics professor Don Tillman, who may have Asberger’s Disease. Unfortunately for him, he’s never had a second date, so he sets off on what he calls The Wife Project, which involves a questionnaire to find a non-smoking, non-drinking female who will fit with his lifestyle.

Unsurprisingly his attempt to find such a perfectly compliant woman goes wrong when he meets a woman named Rosie, who fits none of his criteria but may be the right match for him.

Miller and Lord recently met with the film’s screenwriters, Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. They’re apparently very interested but won’t fully commit until a completed script is ready.

New Kingsman: The Secret Service Trailer – Fresh look at Colin Firth in Matthew Vaughn’s film

September 23, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kingsman-the-secret-service-slideMatthew Vaughn has had great success taking properties with plenty of potential but which aren’t necessarily that well known to the masses – such as Stardust and Kick-Ass – and he’ll be hoping to do the same with Kingsman: The Secret Service, which like Kick-Ass is based on a comic by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons.

Now a new trailer has arrived which you can watch below.

The film tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.

Colin Firth (The King’s Speech), Samuel L. Jackson (Captain America: The First Avenger), Taron Egerton (The Smoke, Lewis) and Michael Caine (The Dark Knight Rises) star. It’s due out in the UK on January 29th, 2015. [Read more…]

Aaron Paul Finds The 9th Life of Louis Drax Alongside Jamie Dornan

September 23, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Aaron-Paul-slideMiramax is pulling together a cast of hot young actors for The 9th Life of Louis Drax. Jamie Dornan was cast a couple of weeks ago, and now he’s been joined by Aaron Paul, according to THR.

The is based on Liz Jensen’s best-selling novel of the same title which begins on Louis Drax’s 9th birthday, when he suffers a near-fatal fall. In order to reveal the strange circumstances surrounding the young boy’s accident – Dr. Allan Pascal (Jamie Dornan) is ‘drawn into a thrilling mystery, testing the boundaries of fantasy and reality.’

Paul will play the father of the young boy, who becomes the initial subject of the investigation into the accident.

Alexandre Aja is directing from a screenplay by Max Minghella (who took on the project following the death of his father, English Patient director Anthony Minghella, who’d previously been developing the movie).

Filming will kick off next month in Canada.

Liam Neeson Is Back & Getting Angry In The First Taken 3 Pics

September 23, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

taken-3-pic1Bryan Mills is coming back with Taken 3, officially known as Tak3n, and now the first pictures from the movie has arrived, which suggests he’s not going to have calmed down and spend the entire running time knitting.

USA Today has the pics – which feature Neeson, Maggie Grace and Taken newbie Forest Whitaker – and also offers some of our first info on the plot.

This time around Mills is framed for murder, with Neeson saying, “I have to go on the run, I’ll put it that way, from the not-so-lawful types and the lawful authorities. Bryan Mills served his country faithfully, but now even they are after him. They must not like me. This time, no more traveling. If my daughter was ‘taken’ again on a trip, Bryan Mills would have to be certifiably locked up for bad parenting.”

He adds, “Bryan Mills wants to fight quick, using the dirtiest moves possible to finish. It’s not like, ‘Put your fists up, fellow!’ Why fight like that when you can kick someone in the kneecap and be done with it?”

Its’ the first Taken film for Forest Whitaker, who plays a law enforcement agent in pursuit of Mills. he comments,”People are attracted to quiet heroes. Liam’s presence has that. He gives people a sense of comfort and security. And he’s an excellent actor… There’s no big fight between us, which I would have loved. That will have to wait until Taken 4.”

We’re unlikely to get that further sequel though, with Neeson saying, “It’s a rollicking good story. But I think this is the end. If I feel audiences saying, ‘Come on, he’s 62, enough is enough,’ I’m very sensitive to that and if I pick up that vibe it will all stop. And I’ll start playing dads or grandfathers,. But I keep myself pretty fit and my knees are still great. And it’s fun.”

First Look At Genndy Tartakovsky’s CGI Popeye Movie

September 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

popeye-animation-testIt’s not too surprising that Sony decided it would be a good idea to make a 3D CG Popeye movie, but how the character would look was another question. Now we get to take a look with a featurette that ends with a look at Genndy Tartakovsky’s Animation Test for the movie.

There are a few changes from the classic cartoons, not least that Popeye has been scrubbed up with his tattoos removed and his ever-present pipe has been taken away too.

We still have to wait a while for the final movie though, as it’s not due out until 2016.

Genndy Tartakovsky made his name working on programmes like Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack and Star Wars: Clone Wars, and made his feature debut with Hotel Transylvania. [Read more…]

Joseph Gordon-Levitt May Be Edward Snowden For Oliver Stone

September 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

joseph-gordon-levittA few months ago Oliver Stone stayed true to form and announced he wanted to make a movie about whistleblower Edward Snowden. Now the movie may have found its star, as Joseph Gordon-Levitt is circling the movie according to Deadline.

The movie is being pitched as a thriller, chronicling how Snowden went from being employed as an NSA contractor to deciding he should start leaking classified documents to Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald in 2013. The revelation ended with some lauding Snowden as a hero who unveiled government cover-ups and overreaching, while others see him as a traitor. He’s currently still in limbo in Russia.

Stone unsurprisingly is in the former camp. The director hopes to start shooting in December in Germany, from a script based on the book, Time Of The Octopus, by Snowden’s Russian lawyer Anatoly Kucherena, and Guardian journalist Luke Hardin’s The Snowden Files: The Inside Story Of The World’s Most Wanted Man.

Matt Damon May Head To The Great Wall of China

September 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matt-damonEver since the box office in China started to explode, Hollywood has been trying to find ways to court the country’s viewers, whether it’s remaking The Karate Kid and setting it in China or shooting Chinese-only scenes for Iron Man 3.

A couple of years ago Legendary, the company behind the likes of Godzilla and Pacific Rim, even set up a China based offshoot and announced plans for a movie about the Great Wall Of China. Now it’s moving forward with Deadline reporting the Matt Damon is circling to star and Zhang Yimou (Hero, House Of Flying Daggers) set to direct.

The film was originally due to shoot last year with with Henry Cavill and Benjamin Walker set to star and Ed Zwick directing. That all fell through though, so they’re starting over with the hope Damon will sign on.

There’s still not too much info on Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro’s script (with more recent work by Tony Gilroy), other than that it ‘reveals the mystery behind why the Great Wall was built, and the secrets hidden beneath its stones’.
