Steve McQueen impressed many with Hunger and Shame, but now he’s moved onto something slightly different with 12 Years A Slave. Now the first images from the film have arrived, via USA Today, giving us a look at the likes of Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Fassbender in the movie.

The project is based on the true story of Solomon Northrup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man in the mid-19th Century who was kidnapped in Washington and sold into slavery. He was rescued from a Louisiana cotton plantation in 1853.

McQueen is directing 12 Years a Slave from a screenplay he co-wrote with John Ridley. Brad Pitt, Paul Dano, Sarah Paulson, Scoot McNairy, Garret Dillahunt and Alfre Woodard also star. A prime Oscar-bait release is planned for the end of the year.

Dolphin Tale 2 Is Announced, With Ashley Judd & Morgan Freeman Returning

June 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dolphin-tale-slideWhile Dolphin Tale wasn’t a massive hit, it’s done well enough that Alcon Entertainment has decided it’s worth making a sequel to the 2011 family film. They’re in the final stages of developing Dolphin Tale 2, and now it’s been revealed that Warner Bros has set a September 19th, 2014 US release date.

The original cast is in talks to return for the sequel, including Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman, Kris Kristofferson and others. Charles Martin Smith, who directed Dolphin Tale, is set to helm the sequel from his own script.

Dolphin Tale 2 will tell another true story inspired by the life of Winter, a dolphin found trapped in a net, who had to have her tale amputated. However she found a new lease of life when she got a prosthetic replacement. The new film will also involve a baby dolphin named Hope who was rescued by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in 2010.

Winter, who still resides at the Aquarium, played herself in the original film and returns in Dolphin Tale 2 and Hope will play herself in the sequel.

Red Director Dean Parisot Takes On The Secret Life of Houdini

June 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dean-parisotSummit has been working on The Secret Life Of Houdini since 2009, and in that time the likes of Jeff Nathanson, Gary Ross and Joe Wright have been attached to direct. However they’ve both moved on and the latest taking up the directing reins, according to Deadline, is Dead Parisot (Red).

The project is based on a book written by William Kalush and Larry Sloman, with a script by Noah Oppenheim, which claims that world-famous magician Harry Houdini also led a double life as a British spy. The book also goes deep into his world of magic and mystery, as well as how his legacy later threatened by a group of fanatical Spiritualists led by esteemed British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Although it’s not got another director, there’s still no news on when it might shoot.

Russell Crowe Plans Directorial Debut With The Water Diviner

June 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Russell-CroweRussell Crowe has had plenty of success as an actor, but he’s never directed a movie, until now that is, as Deadline reports that he’s set to make his helming debut with The Water Diviner.

The movie is set in 1919 and follows an Australian father who travels to Turkey to locate his two sons. The brothers went missing during the battle of Gallipoli, which was an unsuccessful attempt by the Allied Powers to control the sea route from Europe to Russia during World War I.

Russell Crowe is currently riding high at the box office due to his appearance in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. He’s apparently been looking for an Aussie-themed project to direct for a while, including flirting with The Long Green Shore and Bra Boys.

Andrew Knight and Andrew Anastasios wrote the screenplay for The Water Diviner. Shooting is scheduled to begin later this year in Australia and Turkey.

Jurassic Park IV Now Coming 2015 & It Will Be Shot In 3D

June 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jurassic-park-3d-poster2After years of planning, it looked like Jurassic Park IV was finally going ahead, with a 2014 release date and Colin Trevorrow set to direct. However a few weeks ago Universal put it on hold indefinitely, while they sorted out issues with the script.

However now at the annual Licensing Expo in Las Vegas, it’s been revealed that the movie is still alive and well, and is now slated for a 2015 release. It was also revealed that it will be shot in 3D. Universal hasn’t confirmed an exact release date, but it seems likely they will aim for a summer 2015 debut.

The first inkling that things were back in motion came last week when director Colin Trevorrow tweeted that he was, ‘Back at work today, toys from 20 years ago waiting in my office. Thanks @ledoctor for keeping them in the box.’

Colin Trevorrow is directing from a screenplay by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes). No cast members have been confirmed yet.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Trailer – More teen fantasy tries to tempt us

June 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s a lot of money in the teen fantasy genre, but also big losses if you can catch the attention of that fickle market. One of those hoping to lure in the Twilight and Hunger Games crowds is The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, which reaches cinemas in August. Now a new trailer has arrived to tempt us.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Clary Fray (Lily Collins) thought she was an ordinary teenager living in Brooklyn until one night in a downtown nightclub she encounters the mysterious, charismatic Jace.  Upon witnessing Jace hunt down and kill a demon in the crowded club, Clary begins to wonder if she is that ordinary after all. Especially as she appears to be the only one who can see him…

‘Jace Wayland (Jamie Campbell Bower) is a Shadowhunter. Part of a secret cadre of half-angel warriors, he is tasked with protecting humanity in an ancient battle against demonic forces. This battle has been fought secretly in our midst for centuries, but the stakes have just been raised.

‘When Clary’s mother is viciously attacked and taken from their home, she discovers her connections to Jace run deeper than she could ever have imagined and beneath surface of the city exists another world…one she unknowingly belongs to. As both Clary and best friend Simon (Robert Sheehan) are drawn into this dark and dangerous world, Clary realises Jace is both the key to uncovering her past and protecting her future.

‘Based on Cassandra Clare’s bestselling novel, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is directed by Harold Zwart and also stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Lena Headey.’

Riddick International Trailer – Vin Diesel’s eyes shine once more

June 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Riddick is due to hit cinemas latest this year, and now we’ve got a new look at it, courtesy of an international trailer. It all looks pretty moody and thankfully not as grandiose and portentous as The Chronicles Of Riddick.

Here’s the plot synopsis: ‘In the film, the infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

‘The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.’
It should hit cinemas this autumn.

Matt Damon Sought For Paedophile Priest Movie

June 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matt-damon-pic1There’s been a lot of scandal surrounding paedophile priests, but Hollywood has generally steered clear of the subject. However that may be changing, as TheWrap reports that Matt Damon is being sought to star in an ‘All the Presidents Men’ style thriller about it.

Tom McCarthy’s is behind the movie, which is about the Boston Globe’s Pulitzer Prize-winning reportage, which uncover a decades-long cover-up by the Catholic Church of dodgy priests in Massachusetts.

‘The scandal was uncovered following a year-long investigation by the Boston Globe’s spotlight team, which interviewed victims and reviewed thousands of pages of documents. Their reporting eventually led to the resignation of Cardinal Bernard Law, who hid years of serial abuse by other priests, and opened the floodgates to other disturbing revelations around the world.’

Damon has yet to say how interested he is (he apparently hasn’t even been shown the script yet), but the filmmakers want the Boston born actor to play investigative journalist Mike Rezendes, who led the charge on behalf of the Globe.

There’s no news on when it might shoot, which may be some time off, as while DreamWorks had been developing the film, they’ve recently pulled out (which is believed to be because of the potential controversy surrounding the movie). The makers are now hoping to attach Damon so they can seek other funding.

Morgan Freeman Joining Scarlett Johansson in Luc Besson’s Lucy

June 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

morgan-freemanBack in April, Scarlett Johansson signed up to kick some ass for director Luc Besson in Lucy. Now she has some company as TheWrap reports that Morgan Freeman is in talks to join her.

Besson also wrote the script for Lucy, which is about a woman who is forced to become a drug mule. However, things go wrong when the drugs start to leak into her body, transforming her into an ass-kicking machine. Miraculously she can absorb knowledge instantaneously, is able to move objects with her mind and can’t feel pain and other discomforts.

So it’s like a superhero movie meets Crank (which was also produced by Besson).

Freeman will be back in wise old man mode asy a professor who has studied evolution and the chemistry of the brain, which Lucy thinks could help her. There’s no news on when the film might shoot.

Iain De Caestecker On For Ryan Gosling’s Directorial Debut, How To Catch A Monster

June 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Iain-De-CaesteckerIain De Caestecker is certainly doing well for himself, jumping from UK TV in the likes of The Fades to America with the upcoming Marvel’s Agents Of SHIELD. Now he’s found the time to fit in the male lead in Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut, How to Catch a Monster.

Gosling has been after the young Brit for quite a while, but it took a while to sort out timings, due to the fact he has to fit it around his SHIELD commitments, which is currently getting episodes in the can before it’s early autumn TV debut.

Variety reports that How to Catch a Monster is ‘set against the surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city and centered on a single mother of two who is swept into a macabre fantasy underworld while her teenage son discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town.’ Christina Hendricks is set to play the mother, with De Caestecker as her son. Matt Smith, Saoirse Ronan, Ben Mendelsohn, Barbara Steele and Eva Mendes also star.

The film has already started shooting.
