Forest Whitaker Producing Richard Pryor Biopic

March 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

forest-whitakerThe long-gestating biopic of comic Richard Pryor has just been given a shot in the arm, as Deadline reports that Forest Whitaker has signed on to produce Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said?. The actor will produce alongside the comedian’s widow, Jennifer Pryor, and his Significant Productions partner, Nina Yang Bongiovi.

The actor-producer will oversee the development of a new screenplay, although it isn’t known if a writer has been attached yet. Bill Condon was previously attached to direct Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said?, which had Marlon Wayans poised to play the comedy legend. The project fell apart when Bill Condon signed on to direct The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.

As Whitaker is developing a whole new screenplay, it seems unlikely they will keep that previous title, and the whole project will get a complete overhaul. Richard Pryor overcame an unconventional childhood, including being raised in a brothel, to become a legend with his edgy brand of stand-up comedy, as well as becoming a major movie star.

It isn’t known when the movie might shoot.

Judy Greer Joins Dawn of the Planet of the Apes As Caesar’s Love Interest

March 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Judy-GreerIt seems Judy Greer is soon going to be donning a motion-capture suit and channelling her best ape, as Vulture reports that the Jeff Who Lives at Home and The Descendants actress has joined the cast of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. She’s signed on to play a female ape called Cornelia, who’s a potential love interest for Andy Serkis’ super-intelligent chimp, Caesar.

The actress comments, “For so long I haven’t been able to say anything about it, so this is exciting! It’s a very different kind of work than I’m used to. I’m not going to be wearing Manolo Blahniks in this one.”

It seems she’s going to get major points from her husband for taking the role, as Greer says, “I married a man who … I’m gonna use the word obsessed. He is obsessed with Planet of the Apes. We had a chimp husband-and-wife cake topper at our wedding. At the cocktail hour, we played Planet of the Apes and Rise of the Planet of the Apes on two separate televisions in the bar area. And on the wedding gift I bought him, a vintage Rolex, I had it engraved, ‘Ape shall not kill ape.’ I was then told that, technically, it’s ‘Ape shall never kill ape,’ but there wasn’t enough space for engraving purposes.”

Greer joins a human cast that includes Jason Clarke, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell. The film is set 15 years after Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, when smart simians are beginning to take over, but a resistance group of humans in San Francisco try to fight back. Caesar meanwhile is having difficulty keeping control of the growing ranks of apes.

Matt Reeves is directing from a screenplay by Mark Bomback.

Chevy Chase & Beverly D’Angelo Officially In Talks For Vacation Reboot

March 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

chevy-chaseEver since the idea of a Vacation reboot/sequel surfaced, there’s been talk of Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo joining, once more playing Clark and Ellen Grisworld. Now, with Ed Helms and Christina Applegate officially attached as Clark’s son Rusty Griswold and his wife, the original actors have entered talks to reprise their roles as Griswold grandparents in the movie, according to Variety.

Ed Helms stars as Rusty Griswold, who takes his wife (Christina Applegate) and children on their first road trip family vacation, which we’re presuming will be as eventful as the ones he went on as a kid. Along the way, they make a pit stop to see Rusty’s mom and dad, Clark and Ellen Griswold (Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo).

Chase and D’Angelo starred as the Griswold parents in 1983’s Vacation, 1985’s European Vacation, 1989’s Christmas Vacation, and 1997’s Vegas Vacation. They also starred in a recent series of Old Navy commercials, along with all of the actors who played their children throughout the franchise.

John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein are making their directorial debuts on the project, working from their own screenplay.

Matthew McConaughey Offered Lead In Chris Nolan’s Interstellar

Matthew McConaughey in Magic Mike

Matthew McConaughey in Magic Mike

It was only a couple of weeks ago that it was officially announced that interstellar would be director Christopher Nolan’s next movie, but he’s already moving fast to find his lead actor. Deadline reports that he has offered the main male role to Matthew McConaughey.

There is no deal in place at this time, but the actor would portray a character named Cooper if he does sign on. As always with Nolan, there aren’t too many plot details available, but the story centres on an interstellar voyage that pushes the boundaries of scientific knowledge.

The project’s roots go back to 2006, when Steven Spielberg hired Jonathan Nolan, Christopher Nolan’s younger brother, to write the screenplay. The idea sprung from noted physicist Kip S. Thorne’s theory that wormholes actually exist and can be used for time travel.

Christopher Nolan wrote the screenplay, which merges his own original ideas with the script that his brother Jonathan Nolan wrote. A release date of November 7th, 2014 has been set.

New Disney’s Plane Poster Released, With Val Kilmer & Anthony Edwards Cameos Revealed

March 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

planes-poster
Disney’s spin-off from Cars – the aptly titled Planes – is due in cinemas this August. A new poster has been revealed, featuring Dane Cook’s cropduster Dusty Crophopper, and Carlos Alazraqui’s El Chupacabra. We’ve also been sent the news that Top Gun stars Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards with who reunite as the voices of fighter jets Bravo and Echo, respectively, as cameos in the movie.

The duo joins an all-star cast including Dane Cook, Brad Garrett, Teri Hatcher, John Cleese and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Inspired by the world of Cars and directed by Disneytoon Studios veteran and aviation enthusiast Klay Hall (King of the Hill, The Simpsons), Disney’s Planes is about Dusty, a big hearted crop duster and his dream of competing as a high-flying air racer – and his decidedly unfortunate fear of heights.

Anthony Edwards commented,“When you think of movies with planes, Top Gun usually comes up, so it is fun to be part of this film as an old trusted hand who will help protect our hero. Our naval aviators are some of the best pilots in the world. Val and I are lucky enough to get to play them twice!”

“Anthony and I were such great rivals in Top Gun, we always had so much fun on set” adds Val Kilmer who provides the voice of Bravo. “I’ve always thought so highly of Anthony, especially with his success on ER. So it was really great to find out that we would both being working together on Planes.”

Take a look below for more cast into from Disney and the characters they’ll be playing.

Brad Garrett (“Everybody Loves Raymond,” “ How to Live with Your Parents for the Rest of Your Life”) lends his voice to fuel truck Chug, Dusty’s buddy, coach and biggest fan.

Teri Hatcher (“Coraline,” ABC’s “Desperate Housewives”) brings life and charm to the say-it-like-it-is mechanic Dottie.

Cedric the Entertainer (“Barbershop,” “Larry Crowne, “Madagascar”) as Leadbottom, a puttering old biplane who has no time for Dusty’s far-fetched flights of fancy.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep,” “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” “Seinfeld”) lends her voice to Rochelle, a tough and confident racer who is the pride of the Great White North.

John Cleese (TV’s “Whitney,” “A Fish Called Wanda”) is the voice of Bulldog, the oldest and arguably wisest racer on the circuit.

Carlos Alazraqui (James Garcia on Comedy Central’s “Reno 911”) brings to life the intensely charming El Chupacabra, a racer with more dramatic flair than is recommended at high altitudes.

Priyanka Chopra (“Barfi!”) voices the exotic, mysterious and ruthless Ishani, the reigning Pan-Asian champion from India.

Roger Craig Smith (Captain America in Disney XD’s “Marvel’s Avengers Assemble,” voice of Sonic The Hedgehog in “Wreck-It Ralph”) voices world champion racer Ripslinger—wings down, the biggest name in air racing—and he knows it.

Gabriel Iglesias (Comedy Central’s “Gabriel Iglesias Presents Stand-up Revolution”) provides the voices of both Ned and Zed, two not-so-sharp saboteurs who work for Ripslinger.

Val Kilmer (“Batman Forever,” “Top Gun”) provides the voice of Bravo, a member of the Jolly Wrenches and a fan of air  racing.

Anthony Edwards (TV’s “Zero Hour,” “Top Gun”) is the voice of Echo, a member of the Jolly Wrenches and a fan of air racing.

David Croft (Sky Sports F1) gives play-by-play coverage as Lofty Crofty, an affable blimp and an eye-in-the-sky reporter for the Racing Sports Network.

Sinbad (Comedy Central’s “Where U Been?”) brings to life Roper, an irascible race official pitty full of sly remarks and colorful commentary.

Oliver Kalkofe (“Neues vom Wixxer”) provides the voice of meek German minicar Franz and his brazen airborne alter ego Fliegenhosen.

Brent Musburger (ESPN, ABC Sports) brings Brent Mustangburger, the excitable Ford Mustang sports broadcasting icon, back to the big screen.

Pacific Rim’s Crimson Typhoon Jaeger Gets A Poster

March 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pacific-rim-new-poster4
Pacific Rim has been introducing as to the film’s Jaegers (giant robots) this week, with Russia’s Cherno Alpha and Japan’s Coyote Tango. Now it’s China’s turn with Crimson Typhoon.

Guillermo Del Toro directs this sci-fi action-thriller, which is set 15 years after enormous kaiju monsters began attacking Earth from some sort of portal deep in the Pacific. This leads each major country to build their own gigantic robot known as a jaeger, to combat these nefarious beasts.

It certainly suggests the film will be about countries coming together and putting their differences aside to take on a common threat.

Pacific Rim comes to theaters July 12th, 2013 and stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, Diego Klattenhoff, Burn Gorman and Robert Kazinsky.

J.K. Simmons & Chris Elliott Join Hugh Grant Comedy

March 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jk-simmonsA few months ago Hugh Grant agreed to take some time off fighting the press to actually star in a movie, which Marc Lawrence will direct (incidentally, Lawrence has never helmed a movie that didn’t star Hugh). Now he’s got some company, as THR reports that J.K. Simmons and Chris Elliott have joined Hugh Grant, Marisa Tomei, Bella Heathcote and Allison Janney in the currently untitled comedy.

The film is about Ray Michaels (Grant), who in 1998 was on top of the world – a witty, sexy, Englishman in Hollywood who had just won an Academy Award for Best Screenplay. Fifteen years later, he’s creatively washed up, divorced, and broke. With no other options, he takes a job teaching screenwriting at a small college on the East Coast. Although the idea of teaching is less than thrilling, he hopes to make some easy money and enjoy the favours of impressionable young co-eds. What he doesn’t expect to find is romance with a single mom (Tomei) who’s gone back to school.

Simmons will portray Dr. Lerner, Chairman of the University’s English department, a family man who takes Michaels under his wing. Elliott meanwhile will portray Jim, a Shakespeare professor and next-door neighbour to Michaels, in search of that certain someone.

The film will begin shooting in New York in April.
